Alright, I'm going to go take a shower and get dressed. Then I'm going to continue reading Vicki's dissertation and try to make some good progress on it ((finishing it might be too of an ambitious goal - though it would be nice)).

I'm back.
I've got 3 hours until I'll have to leave for my interview at the library. Until then I'll continue reading Vicki's dissertation.

They sure were strict about appearances for the stewardesses. It's amazing that the women were able to remember every little detail.

The 1966 Pan Am stewardess manual also regulated lipstick and nail polish colors: “Lipstick must be worn at all times while in uniform. Nail polish is optional. Lipstick and nail polish must be in basic shades—such as red, rose-red, or coral shades. Lavender, purple, orange, insipid pink, iridescent or flesh color lipsticks and nail polish are not permitted.”
~ Vicki Vantoch, Ambassador of the Air, p. 201Very interesting how limited they were in terms of color for lipstick and nail polish.

The term “hip” was derived from “hipster,” a term Beat Poet Jack Kerouac had used in 1958 to describe the Beat Generation, which later came to mean an alternative to middle-class style and values.
~ Vicki Vantoch, Ambassador of the Air, p. 220Interesting piece of information there.

I would no more be stuck in one place and wait for a fellow to come along with a proposal and find myself tied down than I would go to work in a salt mine. I can’t understand girls who don’t want to accomplish little else than hooking a man and getting married. That’s all girls ever think of anymore. If that’s what they want, let them go to it. But it’s not for me. --Connie Bosza, United Airlines stewardess, unpublished memoir, 1952You go girl!

Former stewardess Norma Jean Gaskill Travis flew because “I had an insatiable desire to see ‘far away places with strange sounding names. After graduating from college, I wished to broaden my horizons and drink deep of all the interesting places throughout the world.”
~ Vicki Vantoch, Ambassador of the Air, p. 256I know the feeling.
