One late afternoon…Veni sat up with the hair raised on the back of his neck. He had a strange sense of impending doom, but it wasn’t coming from Rosemary. He put on his vest and quietly exited the room. The hall was quiet save for the hum of electronics and Sephiroth’s steady breathing and heartbeat. It was so rhythmical that Veni knew some would mistake it for sleep… but when he looked towards where he heard Sephiroth in the main “throne” room, the hairs on his neck rose again and he found himself not wanting to go that way. He felt as much an urge to turn and flee as he did to go towards that familiar pressure.

He walked towards it and wondered if Sephiroth was alright. He was so close to fear that Veni wondered how he could breathe so rhythmatically without being knocked out. When he emerged, he saw her; a beauty of her time and origin, but today may be considered a little obscure. She wore a piece of linen wrapped under the breast with straps wide enough to hide the nipples with the breasts peaking out the sides. She had eye makeup in ancient Egyptian fashion around crimson eyes, a wig sat next to her, and her head was shaven. She sat on an ornate chair slightly raised higher than the rest of the floor in the room. The room had a couple seats and tables near one wall, the other side lacked furniture but the walls had art on them. These two sides were easy to tidy up for moveable bleachers. The center of the room was bare save for rugs and the like. The figure on the chair was busy painting designs on her skin with henna. Sephiroth lay crumpled on the floor several feet from the door. Veni could see now that he had a concussion, but the strange man’s body was healing it so there’d be no long term damage. He wanted to check to see if she bit him, but as he moved to do so Nefretiri opened her mouth and said, “I didn’t take any of his blood.”

Her voice had a cold tone to it that sent shivers down his spine. Veni stopped and bowed slightly. Nefretiri stopped what she was doing, stood, and slowly walked towards him. Veni looked at her blankly, but inwardly he was nervous and wanted to flee as he watched her come closer. He was nervous if she was angry at Sephiroth, him, or someone else he knew. “That’s an exceptional humanoid day time guard,” she said in the same tone, but with a smile at the end of the sentence. She knew he wasn’t quite human, but she didn’t know what he was. She lifted and showed Veni the bottom of her arms. They were burned and had slash marks slightly below the elbow up till about the wrist. “He managed to damage me.”

Earlier….Sephiroth had sensed a new presence in the rooms. Nothing had entered through the entrances and teleportation was unlikely. He sought out this new presence and prepared to cast a spell on himself to increase his reflexes and speed. He encountered a shaven woman in jeans and a t-shirt standing in the middle of the largest room staring at the seat near the other end with her back turned to him. “You must be the day watch. I’m surprised there is only one of you…”

Sephiroth gripped his sword tightly unsure of her. “Who are you?”

Her crimson eyes glanced behind her, but Sephiroth avoided her gaze as she turned around. “Who am I?”

Sephiroth felt a chill run down his spine at those last words. He felt his slight nervousness increase into being even slightly frightened of the creature before him. It was a familiar feeling at the same time. It felt like what Rosemary could do to him sometimes when she isn’t paying attention to her aura and he had lowered his guard only worse. He remembered hearing that the head had a similar power. Once he realized this was a fear aura affecting him, it was lessened a bit. He put a lot of effort into sounding calm when he somewhat felt like a rabbit and said, “you are Nefretiti.”

“Very good. You’re observant. A good quality. Are you really good enough to be the only one here? Let us see.” Before she said that last sentence Sephiroth had finished casting the spell on himself and gripped the sword with both hands as she vanished from his vision.

He could barely see it coming as he moved his head away from her fist and swung at her with his sword. She leaped out of the way and he saw that her fist was half opened. She got lower to the ground and aimed at his knees next. After this next attempt he thought that her style vaguely reminded him of one of the martial art styles Ma Jianshen once showed him. He ended up mostly avoiding her during the fight and tried not to let her too close as close combat was the weakness of wielding a sword that long even if he was talented at using it when they got too close. But he knew her speed and strength would be too much for that if she did. It dawned on him what she was using; leopard kung fu. That is supposed to be good for swift hits and close combat.

Despite his attempts to avoid her, she was still the faster one by a lot. Her cat like reflexes allowed her to bend in humanly impossible ways to dodge his skilled swings. Her body movement and speed grew faster as they battled. Then he felt her half open fist in his rib area. He gripped the spot and for the briefest of moments could only focus on where he was hit.

When he came out of it he found her eyes looking into his. He stumbled backwards but couldn’t turn his head from her gaze. She continued to stare into his eyes as she took a step forward while he a step back. After several steps she told him to put his sword away. He complied by making it vanish into wherever he kept it. This surprised Nefretiri a little, but she continued her advances until he backed up against the wall. She reached her arms up to rest on his shoulders.

Now that he got to thoroughly look at her he noticed certain more specific details. Her skin reminded him of the color of the chocolate on a Butterfinger, maybe a little lighter, and her facial features were pleasing to look at. As he started to think about her shorter than he was used to height of an adult woman, but it faded away into a haze in his mind as she floated up to be in a position where he was no longer looking down into her eyes, but straight at them. He couldn’t think of much right now and lost his sense of time. His nervousness of earlier and the pain in his ribs eased away.

She didn’t want him to be afraid even if it would be tasty. Nor did she try to go through his personal thoughts. He was way better than she thought any human could be and thus valuable. His eyes glowed slightly…well at least humanish. She ran her fingers through his hair and moved the hand down to cup his cheek. When she brought his face loser to hers and kissed his warm lips, she felt warm hands rest themselves on her waist, but beyond that he didn’t really kiss her back. That is until she looked him in the eyes which caused something to come over him. He suddenly found himself greatly desiring to kiss her too and pressed his lips to hers. She smiled triumphantly when he kissed her. She kissed his chin and then slightly lower and then lower down his neck brushing back his hair.

When she started to kiss his neck, some red flag went up in his head but he couldn’t quite remember what. Her cool lips on his neck felt amazing and he started to desire for her to sink her teeth into his skin, but something started to nag at him in the back of his mind louder and louder. “S-st-stop,” he stammered.

It’s alright she seemed to say partially killing the voice as she licked where she was about to bite. His skin felt much hotter than before and she moved her face from his neck and looked at him. She felt a burning sensation on her arms as some sort of fire surrounded the man. She got away from him quick and looked at the bottom of her arms which were burned. The fire started to recede as Sephiroth took a few steps forward and shook his head trying to snap out of the pleasant haze. She wouldn’t allow him. Her shadow seemed to extend as she transformed her body slightly and smacked him hard in the back of the head with her shoe several times lest touching him burned her again.

He collapsed unconscious from the blow. So he had gone easy on her earlier. Though she was slightly peeved from being burned and denied what she thought she was about to have, she was overall satisfied…”A magical swordsman…interesting…”

Before Veni had entered the room she had changed into her more familiar clothes and witnessed the swordsman, whom she dared not touch in case he raised fire in his sleep, healing faster than he should be had he been human. She sensed nothing magic about it either…she also recalled that his eyes seemed to glow slightly and concluded that he wasn’t at least fully human. He had a vaguely familiar smell to him that she only smelt once before so she couldn’t quite place it. She noticed Veni stiffen up slightly when she showed him her injuries which oddly hadn’t healed yet. She tried to put him at ease by saying, “I hope he’ll still continue working for us when he revives.”

Though she meant it to be comforting it still came out in her unsettling feeling inducing voice. His nervousness didn’t help her attempts to stop it. She hadn’t been particularly nice to him historically because she liked the taste of his fear in particular, but she didn’t want to torment her son today..at least not more than what he was self inflicting on himself with worry. What if I didn’t do a good enough job while she was away? Is she going to be angry that I haven’t tried to restore the numbers within our line? How is she going to react to the guests who are not her kids? These were things she picked up from him.

“He is a strong, reliable man,” said Veni slightly relieved that she liked him a little.

“From where did our guests originate and when?”

“One is Greek and about my age while the other Irish and about 320 years,” said Veni not saying their names or anything else since she didn’t ask.

“One is Greek you say?” Veni nodded. “Are they your friends?” Another nod. “Then I will practice xenia for him for now. Take this man away to something more comfortable if it won’t hurt you. I would like to meet your new friends soon after they get up.”

Veni proceeded to lift the larger man easily, but his size made it awkward. Sephiroth made a noise when his ribs were touched. Veni prepared to leave, do a few quick things, and to stand outside Cian’s and Daphne’s room. He would knock when he’d sense their stirring. Besides, Daphne would probably be delighted to heal the larger man.

As Veni turned to leave, Nefretiri spoke up, “oh and one more thing Veni.” Veni turned to face her again. “It is good to see you are still around, son.”

Veni smiled weakly. “Good to see you too, mother.”

Cian woke early for the day at 4:30. He glanced to his right—Daphne was still curled up, dead to the world for all intents and purposes. Cian rose from the bed without jostling it—a feat most married men would be impressed with. For a vampire it was no different—superhuman hearing often thwarted rising silently. Cian quietly opened drawers, choosing his outfit before heading into the adjacent bathroom. He took a quick shower before drying himself off. He pulled on his black trousers and his fingers nimbly buttoned his shirt up over his undershirt. When he came back into the room, not 10 minutes had passed and Daphne was still asleep. He gave her a soft smile before opening the door. He would grab their mail, he decided. She would probably be awake by the time he returned.

--

Cian reentered his and Daphne’s room carrying a small stack of letters. He could feel something different in the house as he had walked swiftly through it…Something was new. He could hear faint voices but he didn’t attempt to lisen. Things always changed around this house. At first, it annoyed him; he liked stable living conditions and often developed long-lasting habits forged in routine. He did not like change. Cian shut the door without a sound as he walked into the room, shuffling through the envelopes.

”Anything interesting?” Cian looked up, his red eyes meeting his wife’s. She wasn’t wearing her colored contacts so her true color showed—the red matched his. He felt a rush of self-satisfaction. He was correct in his early assessment: she was awake. She was not, however, dressed for the day. She perched on the edge of the bed, one of her long legs underneath her, her loose nightgown clinging slightly to her bust. Her blond hair was drawn into a thick braid that fell over her shoulder. Her gaze was curious. Though her laptop was open on the bed in front of her, her attention was all his. Cian smiled. He liked that she kept up with the technology of the times but he still thought it was odd. Not many of their kind did so.

Cian flipped again through the envelopes as he walked further into the room. He bent down to kiss Daphne’s head before settling in an arm chair near the bed. He held out an envelope addressed to Daphne. ”This one is for you, love.” He said, ”Other than that…the usual…” He trailed off as he stared down at the thick parchment envelope now facing up at him. The ink was thick on the envelope, although almost scrawled. He sniffed the air; sure enough…Her scent was on it. As a rule, the vampires Cian came into contact with over the years generally didn’t smell of anything. One theory was that this made them better predators. That was one hypothesis Cian had heard, anyway. His sire had disagreed. He clearly remembered the conversation he had had with her regarding this topic during his early years as a vampire. ”The humans will know,” She related, her eyes meeting his in spite of the differences of their stature, ”They will know something is off, even if they don’t know exactly what it is. Everything has a scent.” He had argued that it risked their location to other predators but she had just smiled and agreed. She had left the choice to use the knowledge or to disregard it to him. Ever the empiricist, Cian had experimented. Her theory didn’t work with wild animals but it held true to domesticated animals and humans. It was a minute detail many missed. He couldn’t help but wonder why she knew it. But then…she always seemed to know little things like that.

Cian took another sniff. Under the mail carrier’s scent, it was there. The same mixture of cinnamon, jasmine, and wild blackberries she had worn for centuries clung to it. Involuntarily, his fingers caressed the paper. There were faint traces of Sybil’s rune magic embedded in it. Cian turned it over and ran a finger under the tab to open it. The wax seal was crimson and plain. The letter folded open. It wasn’t long. Extremely short, actually. But that was to be expected. She hated writing (he was actually surprised she hadn’t just called). Several words were written on the page in the same thick, dark ink. They were written in an Ancient Greek script that Cian remembered teaching her. “Are you okay?” roughly translated (though closer to the UK’s slang “Alright?”). So she had heard of the events leading up to Cian’s marriage. The message seemed to shift, emotions rising off the pages as if they too were words or as if the pages were a face and the emotions were expressions on it. His sire’s embedded runes finally became clear. The shortness of the note was added to by the emotions of concern and curiosity. The longer he stared, the more emotions became legible…they shifted to anger, irritation, some sense of joy and surprise…She wanted to meet Daphne.

Daphne awoke to an empty bed. She snuggled deeper into the covers, blinking the tiredness for her eyes. Her hair was still in the braid she’d made last night. It was neat, if only slightly ratty in the back. It was nothing compared to how it looked when she woke up as a human. In those days she had tossed and turned, unable to sleep for extended periods of time. When she had woken as a vampire and after the insatiable hunger phase, she had expected the same thing. She had been wrong. Now, she slept deeply. Not much could wake her…except talking. Social interactions happening around her often woke her.

Today was no different. She could sense something new in the air around THoR. Unlike her husband, she did not mind change. It had taken her some time to adopt this attitude (because honestly, who doesn’t wish for the ‘good ol’ days’?). The new voice was too quiet to hear, however, too distant. Daph stretched out her body and sat up, rubbing her eyes and stifling a yawn. She retrieved her laptop and opened it, staring blankly at the screen as it booted up. She would just surf the internet for a little while…

----

Daphne looked up from her laptop as her husband opened their door and walked into the room. He was perfectly put together for the day. As he closed the door, he flipped through a stack of envelopes—no doubt mail for the day.

”Anything interesting?” She asked. She was expecting a letter from a friend—a vampire that she had met on their honeymoon, actually. She knew her husband received something in the mail almost every day. She wondered why he didn’t learn to use a computer for its emailing capabilities. It would save him time and money. He had scoffed when she had mentioned it once—he teased her for using it and maintained that many of his friends wouldn’t use it.

Cian walked into the room and kissed the top of her head. A feeling of love flooded into Daphne’s chest. She smiled. Cian took a seat on the easy chair by the bed and held out a letter for her before answering her question. His voice trailed off as his gaze was drawn downward. Daphne paused in opening her letter. He sniffed the air, and touched the letter with a soft caress. His reaction was strange but she wouldn’t interrupt him just yet. She knew better. She tore open her letter, her eyes skimming its content swiftly. James apologized but they would have to communicate via post. He didn’t have a computer or even access to one. He admitted apprehension about using one—felt it was too new, too foreign. Daphne rolled her crimson eyes. She wouldn’t tell her husband that he was right about vampires and technology—this was only one case, after all.

Daphne looked up at her husband again. He was sitting completely still, his eyes the only thing moving. Daphne stood, pulling down her short, cotton night gown. She stood behind her husband, looking down at the ancient script. She couldn’t read it but almost immediately emotions flooded into her. It was one of the strangest things she had experienced concerning the post. ”Well, this seems interesting.” She said, ”Who is it from?” She kissed his cheek before moving to their closet.
”My Sire.”Cian responded. Daphne turned around, eyebrows raised.
”Oh? How is she?” She asked, somewhat irritated that his responses were becoming shorter and shorter in spite of the intriguing content of them. Her question was somewhat not needed. She had gained a short emotional window into the letter when she had looked over her husband’s shoulder.
”She wants to know if I’m okay…She also wants to meet you. She was… irritated that she wasn’t at the wedding.”
”Didn’t we send her an invitation?”
”Yes but we should have called and extended it that way as well”
”You gathered all of that from that letter?” It had seemed so short.
”Yes. Well, no actually. She embedded runes into it—magic.” He sighed, ”We will set a later date to go to see her. For now, I will just write back. Groveling. I do not want to call in response to this.” Daphne looked over to see a quick grin appear on her husband’s lips. She shrugged, opening their closet door. She went through clothing options as she heard Cian move to his desk, retrieving paper and his writing case in the process.

Daphne pulled her night gown over her head as she decided on a light blush shirt-dress and a pair of black leggings. She retrieved her dark brown riding boots and put them on over her feet. Daphne stood at the vanity for a moment, twisting her wedding ring on her finger. ”Something feels off today.” She said, turning to her husband.

PostPosted: Tue Dec 31, 2013 3:28 pm
”Something feels off today.” Cian looked up at Daphne as she spoke to him. He nodded.
”It does.” He allowed softly. He unscrewed the cap of his fountain pen.

”There were voices sometime earlier. Maybe something happened.” Cian watched as Daphne unbraided her hair, pulling her fingers through it before using the hairbrush.

”We might have a new guest in the house… I was not able to hear all that the voices were discussing on my short trip downstairs.” Cian’s protective instincts began to kick in. Before, he had had things to distract himself with but now…he wondered who could be downstairs. He turned back stiffly to the letter on the desk before him. He would focus on the letter. It could not be too long but it could not be too short either. He needed her satisfied for now. If she was left wanting, she would call him back to Europe immediate…or worse: she would appear here. He was not convinced she would find herself welcome here. It had taken time for even Cian to become somewhat accepted. Even now, sometimes he wondered if he ever was. His sire would likely be annoyed about having to cross the ocean. She hated to leave her hillside manor. Hated it.

”Should we go down to meet them?” Daphne wondered out loud, styling her hair.

”We will, we will.” He responded, distracted ”I just need to finish this note…I am not convinced you understand what this could mean for us here. We wouldn’t want Sophia—Lavinia? Whatever name she uses these days—paying us a surprise visit?” Out of the corner of his eye he saw Daphne nod.

---

Finally, Cian was able to seal his letter and address it. In it, he had apologized profusely and explained the sitatuation. He noted their current living situation and explained that they would set a future date to see her. Cian thought it brief but informative—just the way he knew his sire liked it. He dropped his dark green wax onto the back of the envelope and pressed his seal into it. He turned to his wife, and was about to say something when there was a knock on the door. He was surprised...although he shouldn't have been. He should have heard whoever it was approach the door. He stood and walked to the door. Opening it, he found Veni and Sephiroth...No, that wasn't quite right. Veni was holding Sephiroth. ”Is everything okay?” He asked. He heard Daphne's feet move across the floor and she brushed past him. ”Oh, Veni, bring him in!” She opened the door, even more and slightly pushed her husband out of the way. Cian could only watch.

When the door opened and Daphne saw Veni holding Sephiroth, she knew something was amiss even before either vampire spoke. She moved across the floor quickly as Cian spoke and invited the other vampire into the room. She led him to the bed and had him lay Sephiroth on top of the covers. She herself climbed up on the bed as well and kneeled before him.

Daphne lifted her hands over Sephiroth, excitement building in her chest. She had not done this in ages. She closed her eyes and there it was...the map of his body on the back of her eyelids. Ribs cracked... head injury...high spiking core temperature. Daphne was not certain that she could affect the body temperature as she was pretty sure that had to do with Sephiroth's own abilities but she could help with the other injuries.

Her hands hovered over the cracked ribs, speaking softly in the language of the body, asking them to heal. Her hands glowed just slightly and the bones mended, causing Sephiroth to take one sharp intake of breath. Satisfied, Daphne moved to the head injury. Something solid had hit him. There was no serious damage...Still...Daphne sent some of her healing powers at the injury, healing the forming bruise.

The blond opened her eyes, and stared at her patient, willing him to open his. She had no doubt that he would soon do so.

"How did this happen?" She asked of the Roman vampire.

Veni couldn't help but smile a little as he finished carrying his friend to the bed. Cian had about as much control of his child and wife as Veni did of his. Was everything okay? He could easily give a simple answer and say yes and no, but he knew they’d want more than that. If everything was okay at the moment it all depended on how they, mostly Cian, reacted to what he was to tell them. He straightened his shirt and vest once Sephiroth was down and ran his claws through his hair. He didn't say anything when he glanced back at Cian with a slight weary smile and turned to back to watch her work her magic on the giant of a man. He wasn't worried for the other’s health as he knew his body would have fixed itself by the morning, but he knew she’d be delighted for the chance to use her power. Delightful this child of Cian’s was.

As that came to mind he felt a little tug at his heart. What if they decided to leave because of her? He knew that Cian put up with a lot that he didn't have to put up with thanks to his wonderful wife, but what if he decided Nefretiri was too much? He tried to maintain a blank face and his normal posture as any worry might stir up concern for the wrong reasons and his desire to slack might show that he wasn't feeling particularly well today. His mom liked to feed off him consciously or not and though she hadn't really done it tonight, he felt like she had from his own anxieties.

He finally took a breath in and said, “My mother has returned. (Something Cian and Daphne should probably know is that no one knew if she was alive or dead as no one felt her death, but she had also disappeared after the deadly siege of their home way back in the RP where Jiluzix tried to capture Rosemary and Satan arrived basically releasing hell on Gaia. In the morning one of those hell portals opened very close to the entrance to the underground lair of the vampires in Barton town which wiped out most of them. Ma Jianshen, Daisy, and Dan were among the few that escaped. Cian wasn't there, but Daphne was though she never met Nefretiri since she stayed at the haven of THoR…however I am sure her disappearance was mentioned to them. For current RP this happened at least 7 years ago I think.) She merely wanted to test Sephiroth’s merit as a daytime guard. I think he passed despite the results. Based on what I saw I think that after they spared for a time she stunned him with the blow to the ribs and then drew in too close to him and to keep her away he used some fire magic and burned this part of her arms.” Veni rubbed the underside of his arms down to his elbows. “Possibly with some holy quality in the fire as they were still burned when I saw her. After he burned her I believe she knocked him out or possibly she got burned when she knocked him out, but I don’t think both arms would be burned in the same spot if the latter is the case since only one arm is needed to hit someone in the head with a blunt object. I don’t know how long he was on the ground when I got up, but I think she was cautious about touching him again. When I arrived she seemed quite pleased about him with her word choice even if it is hard to tell from the tone she used.”

When Sephiroth opened his eyes from the darkness his mind had found itself in, he saw Daphne above him as he was laying and she was kneeling. He realized he had been knocked out, but couldn't remember why, but he had this strange feeling that he deserved it. He had just missed what Veni had said. Instead of rubbing his head as one would expect, he rubbed his neck.

“Aha!” Came Veni’s voice suddenly. That’s why he burned her! I thought I smelt her scent there, but I wasn't sure if she tried. Veni thought this last to himself.

Silence was the response of the other man as he sat up. The cobwebs still lingered in his head and he couldn't remember what had happened before he passed out. If anyone asked him if he was alright he didn't hear it. An image of a woman with chocolate skin, red eyes, and a shaven head came to him. Who was that?

Veni continued what he was saying though the pause was only a few seconds. “After she praised Sephiroth and his skills as a day time guard,” to which Sephiroth raised an eyebrow and thought who to himself, “she asked about my… well our guests.” With Nefretiri back, he was no longer head of the house hold. He was really only a steward until she came back… that is if she had been alive to even come back. “All she asked were your relative ages, your nationalities, and if you were my friends. And when I said you are my friends she decided to welcome you as her guests as well and would like to meet my new friends as soon as possible. She used the term xenia to describe it.

“While I believe she will keep her word, since I have known her to not generally lie and do as she says she’ll do, there are probably a couple things I should mention about her. Her power of note is the same as Rosemary’s, but more powerful, so she feeds on fear. And while Rosemary would prefer to feed on blood more than fear, my mother is the opposite so her aura is less in check. Her voice may also send chills down your spine as she is a master of such a voice…
Though Dan and Daisy might surpass her with that one given enough time thought Veni of the two often purposefully horror movie creepy vampire children. “She’ll probably try to hold back for your sake, but for what she fails at don’t take as hostile much like Rosemary… though I’m not sure if she wants the satisfaction of making you nervous once in a while like my beloved seems to enjoy from Daphne on occasion.” Rosemary loved her in her own way Veni thought. Veni started slouching a bit when he said the next bit as he wasn’t looking forward to it. He had almost hoped to have never seen her again, but if she has indeed changed some. “Besides she’ll probably concentrate it on me since she likes the taste of my fear.

Anyways her mood is good today even if I find her actions unusual. I think she had a sort of walkabout while she was gone or some deep thoughts. She was on the phone with BlackMN, very unusual, which both raised and eased the poor girls nerves and told her that she welcomed the idea of a haven or neutral place for wandering creatures of all types which is what THoR is truly meant to be...as long as they didn’t disrespect her when they’d go into town. (THoR is at the edge of what Nefretiri considers to be her territory/hunting grounds.) I don’t think she fully realized what the girl had gotten Rosemary to do with her house when they left our home.”

----------------------------

BlackMN didn’t have full control over her fire abilities when she was first adopted 40 years or so ago so Rosemary and she left so the girl didn’t risk killing everyone. Part of the excuse that got Rosemary out was that she was learning new ways to torture people as a doctor. She was still angry at Veni for something or other so hadn’t minded leaving with the girl. This moving though led to the study for and creation of those magical yellow ribbons that are sometimes tied around her ears to block the child’s powers for the safety of others. (Both Daphne and Cian have seen these in use.)

A little earlier the phone rang to which BlackMN answered. "The House of Romance, this is BlackMN speaking."

"What do you mean by House of Romance, BlackMN? I thought this was Rosemary's property."

That voice sounded familiar and sent chills down her spine. "Technically it is, but we've converted it to a place anyone who are in love could stay at for little to no money if they don't have enough money for a honeymoon, they have trouble meeting due to diverse backgrounds, or a place anyone can stay for a little while to relax from their troubles."

"Meaning it's a refuge for any creature who wants to seek shelter?"

"I suppose you could put it that way. Err who is this?" The girl thought she knew who it was before the voice spoke.

"Wonderful idea! This is Nefretiti, child. I called to see how you have been."

BlackMN's heart sunk and she went pale and silent. She was silent long enough that Nefretiti said "Hello?"

BlackMN's fur rose even higher and her tail poofed out even more. "Oh sorry! I-I wasn't expecting you, M-miss! I haven't talked to you in so many years that I didn't recognize your voice! I have been well and not at the same time. I have made many new friends since last I saw you, but some of them I am afraid are out of my reach forever..."

"I will ignore your lack on how to properly address me. That's too bad, child. At one point I attempted something like that, but that was a long time ago...You're free to attempt such a thing."

"H-how s-should I?" BlackMN couldn't remember at the moment as the voice on the line didn't sound friendly despite the word choice she used. And their conversation continued as such for a little while longer.
-----------------

However she has requested to meet you personally and I’d be happy to escort you to her should you accept,” said Veni putting his hand on his chest with a slight bow not hiding his child like anticipation to their answer which made him look all the more like the teenager he was eternally stuck as, “and I am sure she’d be happy to see you recovered from your injuries.”

Though Sephiroth was still foggy on what exactly happened, he was able to guess at what happened in general from what Veni said.

--------
Xenia is a guest host relationship which literally means “guest-friendship.” It is believed to fail to be a good host or guest would bring on the wrath of Zeus as the welcoming of strangers was protected by the gods. The guest and hosts typically do some form of gift exchange. The host would provide food, shelter, protection, bath if necessary. The guest was not to be over burdensome to the host. Upon arrival the host would not ask the guest many personal questions including their name or where they were from until their personal needs are met. At the same time the host does not reveal theirs unless certain circumstances make it proper to do so while they stay such as they develop a sort of relationship or if it is an extended stay. This was to protect the guest and host in case they had wronged each other through actions to the family…for example if the guest was the brother of the murderer of the host’s wife for example. This would protect the guest from revenge. This is probably why Nefretiri didn’t ask who sired the guests or their names because she plans to treat them as proper guests, but she wanted to know their earthly locations to try to treat them properly depending on location…however she’ll probably be able to figure out which vampire line they are from.

So focused was Daphne on healing Sephiroth that she only heard bits and pieces of what Veni was saying. She stored the rest of the verbal data in her memory for the moment. She would return to the words when she could. On any normal mortal, this healing process would have taken a lot of the (comparatively) young vampire’s energy, but Sephiroth wasn’t “normal”. It was as if his body wanted to heal. It did not resist the magic as Daphne had experienced before. But then…it could have also been attributed to the unserious nature f his injuries. Even without Veni’s words, Daphne could sense from the injuries that the older vampire did not intend to kill. She may even have been playing with the man.

Daphne was finished in a matter of minutes. I almost cannot believe that he was bested, came her passing thought. She could remember only a few instances in which Sephiroth had been severely hurt. One had been right before her marriage to Cian…unpleasant flashbacks popped into her head like a photo wheel of bad vacation pictures. She grimaced and shook them away. Her eyes calmly looked at Sephiroth’s face. Any moment now… She didn’t have to wait long. His eyes blinked open and his hand went to his neck. At first, Daphne thought this reaction (instead of reaching for his head as he might be expected to do) could be attributed to her superb healing prowess. As she thought about it though, taking into account the fact that Veni’s mother had engaged Sephiroth in battle (and had won) the movement became significant to something else entirely.

”Did she take any?” Daphne asked, softly. She could find out how much blood (if any) he lost by laying hands on him but that was rude. Instead, she had decided to ask. If Veni’s mother took a lot of Sephiroth’s blood, it was within Daphne’s power to ask the body to rapidly replace it. It would take time and much more effort but it could be done. Gently, she moved his hand so as to see the skin of his neck. It didn’t look like Nefretiri had bitten him.

”Well, I should hope your mother was pleased with his abilities. The ‘test’ certainly took a toll on him…Physically as well as mentally, I think.” Daphne clasped her hands together in front of her. ”I wonder how serious her burn is…” She let her sentence trail off, unsure if she wanted to offer her healing services to an unfamiliar vampire or not.

Daphne then pulled the missed dialogue out of her memory, trying to remember each of the details that Veni had related to them. He had used a foreign word, Xenia, that she was unfamiliar with. She was not concerned, however. The fear aura was the more pressing piece of conversation as far as Daphne was concerned. She knew Rosemary liked to tease her every once and awhile with her own fear aura…But to have someone who wasn’t, for the most part, trying to reign it in? Daphne was not sure how to feel about this. ”I didn’t know that fear had a taste to it.” She offered, although it wasn’t strictly true. She thought she could remember a time where Rosemary had said something similar.

Well, at least Veni had said that his mother was in a “good mood”, whatever that meant.

Cian watched his wife as she healed their friend…but only for a moment. The bulk of his attention was directed toward his Roman friend. Veni shot him a weary smile but otherwise kept his expression neutral. He seemed ready to say something…so, Cian waited.

”My mother has returned.” Veni finally stated. Cian’s mind was already working out what this meant for himself and his mate. He flipped through memories of all the times Veni mentioned his mother. Some time before Cian’s arrival to the House but sometime after Daphne’s, a portal to Hell had opened, drawing Veni’s sire into it, narrowly missing Dan, Daisy, Ma Jianshen and several others. Daphne, of course, had been relatively safe at the House. Because of this incident, no one had been especially sure of Nefretiri’s state. Cian didn’t say anything but he nodded, signaling for Veni to continue. Cian’s letter from his own sire was surprising…He couldn’t imagine Sybil showing up out of the blue. On some small level, Cian could relate to Veni’s situation.

As Veni explained what had happened, pieces started fitting together in Cian’s mind. He was sure Sybil would have done the same. There was something about the older generation and their tests. In his mother’s case, Cian wondered if that had to do with the war she seldom (if ever) mentioned. Some desire to test those close to herself and her family in order to make sure they were worthy or to be trusted. ”This makes me wonder what would have happened if he had not ‘passed’ her test.” Cian allowed, cautiously. He couldn’t put his finger on it but something about Veni seemed off throughout their conversation. Not normal, somehow. Again, Cian wondered if this had to do with his mother. The Greek vampire kept his thoughts to himself, however.

”Aha!” Veni’s exclamation broke through Cian’s thoughts. He followed Veni’s line of sight and stared at Sephiroth soon enough to see him rub his neck and right as his wife asked him a question. He surveyed the silver-haired male and predicted that she didn’t take any. Veni began speaking once more, drawing Cian’s attention back to his blond friend.

Cian’s maker wanted to meet Daphne and himself…it seemed reasonable. They had to meet her. There was nothing they could say to prolong or evade it. Then there was the matter of Cian’s simple curiosity. ”It’s kind of her to offer xenia.” Cian commented, ”Not many would offer it before meeting the guests in question.” His strategic mind continued to take everything in and process it. He listened as Veni told them of his mother’s power and her aura. It sounded powerful. He wondered if there were some rune or magic that could hold it off…But he decided that that could wait. He did not want to insult her before even meeting her. His eyes slid over to Daphne. If Rosemary liked teasing Daphne with feat, what were the chances that the older vampire would do similarly? But Cian wouldn’t create a shield for her either. Sometimes it was better to accidentally face another’s power than to defensively provoke it. Cian was not even sure if a shield would work properly against her.

Veni bowed to them, appearing for a moment just as young as he was when he was turned. Strategically, Cian couldn’t see any way around it even if he had wanted to avoid it.

”It would be our pleasure to meet your mother.” Cian responded, answering for both himself and his mate. After all, the sooner they met the better.

Daphne glanced down at her patient even as Cian agreed to Nefretiri’s request. ”Are you feeling well enough to move or would you like to rest a bit longer? She asked, ”You may stay here if you do not feel like leaving just yet. We don’t mind. I am also assuming Veni’s mother would not mind either--” She glanced at Veni, ”Especially considering your state of health when Veni brought you here.”

Daphne got off the bed and smoothed down her shirt dress. She glanced down at herself. Was she presentable enough? She moved to the closet and withdrew a brown leather jacket. She put it on and looked at herself in the mirror. Well, it would have to do. ”I’m ready when you are Veni.” She stated.

Veni led them out of the room. He led them to the “throne room”. Daphne had enjoyed their stay at Veni’s house. It was beautiful and spacious. They had been here for several weeks already and had planned on staying a few more. Daphne wondered if Veni’s mother’s appearance would change this plan. When they entered the room, the found the older vampire and Ma Jianshen. Ma Jianshen was bowing lowly to Nefretiri and she was holding a bag of blood candy.

From behind Cian, Daphne took in Nefretiri’s appearance. The older vampire appeared to be smaller and more full bodied than the Irish vampire. Her hair was an Egyptian wig—black and somewhat short. She had markings all over her body—designs looping around her skin. She had light brown skin and the makeup framing her eyes was cat eye. The burn was visible on Nefretiri’s skin. It had not healed just yet.

Daphne didn’t yet know what to make of the older vampire. From this distance, she didn’t appear threatening but Daphne knew not to trust that assumption. She expected Nefretiri to hold more power than she let off. She was unnerving and somewhat intimidating to the young vampire.

Cian’s assessment of Veni’s sire was similar to that of his mate’s, however, he did not think that she looked nonthreatening. He knew better than to assume such a thing about an old vampire. His maker had taught him that. His maker had been turned when she was a child. She often made the most of a situation if her opponent misjudged her power.

Cian’s eyes took in Nefretiri’s henna. They had magic properties to them. There were many Cian did not recognize...Others, Cian was able to recognize protective symbols. It was interesting but not at all unexpected. Vampires tended to be somewhat eclectic in their beliefs and traditions. It was one of the features of immortality. He stayed silent, waiting for Veni to introduce them, even as he saw Daphne’s eyes fixed on the burns on Veni’s sire’s arms. He knew what she wanted to do but he hoped she would wait until after the introductions were made.

A relieved smile came across Veni's face. He was afraid this would be the one that broke the camel's back and Cian would choose to leave. If he left now, he may never be welcome again and Veni didn't desire to say goodbye. He enjoyed the nonfamilial company. He wouldn't have blamed him. "I'm glad to hear it. I think telling her you are my friend is what made her decide to offer it and to let you know you're safe to leave now if you desired."

Then the vampress gave him a look and talked about the state he brought in her patient. While Daphne got ready, he wondered why she put on the jacket as he didn't think it added much to the dressiness she was already in. (Least I don't think it would make her dressier from what I picture of a blush shirt-dress and a pair of black leggings with riding boots.) "Of course she doesn't. Her exact words were 'take this man away to something more comfortable if it won’t hurt you.' I don't think she expects you to be coming back this soon."

Sephiroth's eyes shifted to look at her hand which was gently moving his hand from his neck. He felt the lingering ghost of a touch on his neck and the sensation made him want to scratch at it. He responded softly since Veni was talking, "I don't believe so, but I think she tried. It itches slightly."

After Daphne spoke before she left, he responded, “I’ll be right behind you in a few minutes. I feel a need to sleep tonight. Would you two feel better if I stayed in a room here or shall I go home for that?”
