Books you hated.

I thought there would be a topic for this already, but I suppose there isn't--unless I missed it somehow.

Have you ever read a book that you just couldn't stand? A book that made you grind your teeth? A book that made you want to chuck it across the room?

I have an irresistable compulsion to finish every book I begin, no matter how awful.

My worst reads:
The Pearl by John Steinbeck
Eragon by Christopher Paolini
Portrait of a Killer by Patricia Cornwell
Anything by Laurell K. Hamilton after Obsidian Butterfly, when her books became porn.
The Giver by whoever the hell wrote it.

What books do you hate?

Anything by Beverly Cleary biggrin

And most supposedly "realistic" fiction involving teenagers and high school. Which are completely untrue and unrealistic.

You hate The Giver (it's by Lois Lowry by the way) and Eragon! Ugh! Oh well, if I get into this I'll go on for hours. There are certain books that I strongly dislike. I forget the name of one (it's lurking somewhere in the basement) but it copies off of almost every current popular fantasy book and I hate that! I know there are others, but I can't think of them right now.

I can't read "Pride and Predjudce" I know a lot of people think it's good but I absolutely hate the book and I only like the new movie.

I don't HATE any of the books I own thankfully, although there is one I dislike....
The Dragon's Eye.

Now, I don't really like it because it was very factual in its route and very confusing at parts...

Ooh, I'll take this one! It's one of my most hated books as well, along with Cell by Stephen King.

Paolini made his success by publishing his book first with his parent's company (who obviously didn't think of editing the book), then passing it on to a higher publisher. The very fact that he wrote it when he was 15 is beside the point (which, they touted that SO often). He's 22 now - he should ahve gone back and edited out MANY parts for grammar, structure, and general nonsensity.

Let's not even include the fact that it's a ripoff of several other major franchises - it's Dragonriders of Pern and Lord of the Rings meets Star Wars. One of the things that I hate the most in the book - at the very beginning there's a complaint of a lack of money to purchase food. Yet, when they went to the market, his uncle gave him money. There are several other points, but.. yeah, I haven't read the book since the first time and I have no plans to go back and re-read it.

And my rant on Cell by Stephen King - yeah, it's RIGHT HERE, in my journal.

I actually LIKE Eragon, but I won't get into that. lol

The only book I can think of off the top of my head that I hate is Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. I'm sure I'll think of more later. I'm usually lucky enough to like the books that I read, and most books my English teacher forces me to read are tolerable.

OK, so when you explain why you hate that book, you'd better have a good reason besides "Oh, I had to read it for school" because that is a DUMB reason to hate a book.

I used to like the Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot when I was younger (about 10) but now I can't stand them! The main character (and all the others come to think of it) PISS ME OFF

Yep, same here.

I remember I was completely obsessed with A Series of Unfortunate Events in my middle school years. I've finished the series a long time ago and I enjoy it very much. It's still one of my favorites to this day because I just think it's oh-so clever <3

And I still like Artemis Fowl, despite all the, what I think are, unnecessary sequels. 8D

Awww, you hate The Giver? So sad . . .

Anyway . . . I'm pretty sure I didn't like any of the books we read in English this year, though some of them I might have liked if it was my choice to read them . . . but The Sorrows of Young Werther by umm Goethe was TERRIBLE! It was written in the form of letters from this really ridiculous like . . . 1800s emo guy. Every page was like "Oh my gosh! I love everything! Nature is beautiful! I LOVE Lotte! Lotte is beautiful! Lotte loves me! I hate my life! I'm going to kill myself! Everything is beautiful!" I wanted to die when I was reading it.

Madame Bovary is pretty much the same, except it's not written in letters and the main character is a woman.
