I guess every so often it's not bad. Like some of the graphic art we have today [ex. Ipod sillouettes] is fine. But I mean ridiculous sculptures that look like they were thrown together.
Or a random dot on a blanc white canvas.

You mean contemporary art. Modern art ended like 1970s.

Not all contemporary art is terrible.
I like the shock value stuff people pull, the kind that gets into the news.
Also not all that art has a 100 page essay on their meaning. Some just have simple clear meanings whilst yeah others have deeper meanings; like all art.

I think people just dislike contemporary art because of the generalisations. I've been to a few contemporary art galleries/shows and they didn't just feature random dots on a canvas.

Also I'm impartial to people finding 'deeper meaning' in stuff because hell bullshitting deeper meaning in crap got me consistent A+ in Art class even though I suck at painting. Like seriously once, I got a sheet of paper and picked stuff off the floor (and in an art room, there's loads of crap on the floor) and pritt-stick glued it down to the paper in an array of patterns. I then wrote a 6 page in-depth analysis of my art. I got an A+. Brilliant.

Also at your poll, I think the point of those plain white canvas is for people to make their own meanings up. Which is funny in a sense but if that was the intention of the original artist then quite clever too.

Because modern art is all the same.

@ VC: I see. In that case I like some contemporary art. But I still dislike modern art.

@ Ythan: I know it's not. But still, the genre I mean.

See this really urks me cause I keep seeing this topic everywhere I go. Not all modern art is the same and I'm pretty sure that image isn't real in the first place. Yes there's giant dog s**t in some countries and blood covered testicles in another, but what give you the right to say it's not art? What makes art truly art? No one can define this properly because not all art fits in the same perspective.

Now I'm not in love with modern art, I do enjoy some of it though. Not all of it is the same. Picasso was a modern artist but everyone rants and raves about him. Modern Art is something that came as a result of photography, after that came around artists began to challenge the traditional style and look for new ways to express the world as they saw it. Modern art is actually unique in that it was a bunch of people from all over seeing there was a new way to show the same image. That you didn't have to paint the same people over and over and could go beyond that. Sometimes it was something as simple as repeating an image over and over, to making abstracting everything into geometric shapes, even just throwing paint. To you this seems like a "Duh I could have thought of that!" No, you wouldn't have, you would never have though. "I can throw paint around to make a few quick bucks."

First of all it's one of those things where they actually do things for a reason. Modern Art was about breaking the boundaries of art, expanding even. Modern Art was done at a time where being an artist was truly a gift, but everyone wanted you to paint the same things and everyone to do the same thing. In this day and age we're all against the idea of conforming right? Well back then this was the way to break out, it was the way to chart their time. Art is reflective of the time it's in, whether it's satire or it's an expression, Art is supposed to show us what we are.

Art has never been something as simple as throwing paint on a wall. True it takes at least one rich person to get you famous, someone has to like your work, but if it's truly something with your views, the way you see the world or the way you feel as we stand, then you can become famous. You wont get rich quick, no being an artist is expensive, for the artist. You sell work so you can make work and pay for the stuff to make that work. Modern Art is actually pretty damn impressive considering the era and how it was trying to expand the world of art, which it did. I respect it, not all of it is great but it's something to be admired at the least for it's contribution.

This is like saying "I hate [music genre]"
I hate country!

Speaking in generalizations really shouldn't be cut down when it's like this because everybody does it. I generally have no real opinion about modern art; a lot of it's BS but some if it's really cool. I kinda dig some mod styles and everything, some of the simple, geometric pieces? Fkn sweet. Random dots on canvases? No. People pissing on copper to make it corrode? Get a ******** life.

People just need to remember, artists ran into photography, saw what they were doing there and going "OH s**t!" While this inspired some people it made it so they branched out, created images that you couldn't get through a camera. They had to challenge the new ways, if they didn't photography would take over.

It's kind of like how we're using Digital programs to go over traditional art, they have to expand and create images that go beyond a computer.

For usual the people that just try to find the deeper meaning and discuss about it in the weirdest ways have absolutely no ******** clue about anything considering art and just like to pretend a little to feel intellectual.
I do like modern art quite a lot as long as it does have something behind it (depends strongly on the artists; there are some out there that like to use the mediums of it to quickly gain attention and money by really doing random crap. At times you can see that sort of.) and maybe also is made in a good technique. I mean, sadly a lot of 'new' artists that have a middle class job and basically do art 'cause it's cool right now (seen stuff about one of those on tv and oh god she was the suck as a person as a whole).
Also, you can't put modern art just to the clishée stuff like "random lines" or "dot on paper". There are so many different kinds of it, some looking quite realistic and some just not based on the motive of the picture but the emotion it delivers all through it's layers of color.

The stereotype of contemporary art seriously pisses me off. I can agree with many that a white canvas with a square in it is pretty dull but that is not all contemporary art!
If you go to any of the Guggenheim's museums or The Pompidou Centre(my favourite whee ) you will appreciate contemporary and modern art! I appreciate nearly all art but my favourites would be basically anything Post-impressionist(incl.). Personally I find most Renaissance art a little dull. It's beautiful, yes but it's generally things like Bible stories which are, in short, paintings of people. Loads of different people in different situations which I find quite repetitive and boring.
That's one of the reasons why I love modern and contemporary, because, instead of a gallery full of paintings and sculptures of people you get a random assortment of different things.

And finally, does it matter if the art took no effort? Art is basically beautiful, appealing, intriguing things. If a someone effortlessly painted a few shapes on a page, like some of Kandinsky's work, for example, does that make it bad? I have a Kandinsky print in my living room. Pink background with triangles, pyramids, lines, squiggles and circles and I love it. Probably wasn't difficult for Kandinsky now, was it? Effort=/=Beauty

Why, oh God, WHY would you keep something so dreadful in your house?!

I mentioned it before, but I prefer my art to be, you know, not junk. Screw squiggles, gimme something tangible.
