working with some new styles, wanted to know how I was doing.

Are you trying to imitate the style of this book?

because if you are, it would be my advice to stop
immediately (if you can)

if you're not, I just have to ask,
what style were you going for?
Since I have never seen your previous work, I cannot see how this would be different from what you normally do

In either case, my advice for the moment is to practice with color in the physical world first before going to the computer.
It will help make your characters seem more alive.

In the first pic the left guy should have ear. Allso they both doesn't seem to have shoulders at all. But I like their eyes, they are really lively and coloring in the left guys hair looks great. Use that kind of coloring to the rest of the pic and they'll look really great! 3nodding Allso I like that you did some details there, like the hoodies zipper thing and the other guys shirt.

In the next pic it has more shoulder, that is good, but he needs more hips or butt. In this again I like that you did details. Allso the eyes are lively and I like his dreamy stare in up.
