The Literate Spam Guild's National Novel Writing Month 2008 Support Thread!

Isn't that a mouthful?

What is NaNoWriMo, you ask?
Well, seeing that it stands for National Novel Writing Month, it's not too difficult to figure out - throughout the month of November (it's almost like "novel!"), you ... write a novel. The entire thing.

That's crazy!
I KNOW THAT'S PART OF THE CHALLENGE.

The official challenge is to write 50,000 words in this month, at least, more totally being encouraged but not a requirement. There's also an official website and signup and everything like that, but I'm not going into detail like that when we can just have an unofficial, for-fun event here in the LSG for it.

When does it begin?
November 1st, at the stroke of midnight, after Halloween. You ARE allowed to outline the story before then, but you are NOT allowed to start writing it before, and it runs through the end of November. So be finished before December 1st, if you can help it! (Or, that's when you can finally take a breather without feeling guilty. ;D)

Are there any prizes?
Nooo sorry, this is for fun. I can't afford to hand out prizes anyway. xD PLUS it's so difficult to prove if you really wrote it in the time allowed and whatnot... not to mention, I'm participating as well. Although I believe there are prizes on the official website.. or something. If you're interested, check that all out, too.
However if this does come together really well I might do art of the participants, but that's only if you REALLY ARE TRYING. I'll be watching.

What if I'm done with my story and it's only 35,000 words?
So what? You at least have the satisfaction of FINALLY getting it out on paper, right?

What is the point of this thread?
To help encourage other participants, of course! OR, even just brag about how far you made it in x amount of days. xD
I'd suggest getting a Blogger or Livejournal account where you can post your work, let others read it and whatnot, or even a deviantART page, that way if you're stuck, others here can help you out or even point out a new direction to take the story, if need be.

Participant List!

Feel free to post even if you're not sure you can make it all the way through. :3 An attempt is better than nothing, you know.
Also, if you're going to begin uploading your work to a particular place, let me know and I'll post a link next to your name! :3

Various Tips and Junk

Kurt Vonnegut's Rules of Writing
1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.

2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.

3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.

4. Every sentence must do one of two things -- reveal character or advance the action.

5. Start as close to the end as possible.

6. Be a sadist. Now matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them -- in order that the reader may see what they are made of.

7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.

8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.

Oh and I dunno if anyone else feels like it would help but when I'm low on ideas, I like working off prompts (usually leading to crazy unrelated tangents but whatever).

So:

Random Name Generator
Random Word Generator
Random Plot Generator

Iii'm participating. I'm excited and nervous.
And thanks VC, I like working from prompts too, that's really helpful. 4laugh

Ooh those are awesome. Thanks for that. 8D!

I'm actually working from some older ideas so I won't be using any prompts, but they're really fun to use even when you're bored. XD

Haha oh my god I was going through unfinished plans or starts of drafts of old ideas.

Anyway I found one about layered worlds, how higher layers can glance down and weakly interact with lower layers. I'd even named all the layers and such, made character races. I think this was written about 3 years ago. I posted it in the LSG, definitely, I want to find the thread but LSGoogle's down.

Anyway I realised that it's remarkably similar to the world that The World Ends With You is set in. Huh weird coincidence.

That's really neat.

I actually had an idea with layers like that once too but I never did anything with it. O:

I would participate, but I'm already writing a novel, so basically, I wrote it before the contest. Which is against rules, right? Lol;; And I'm out of ideas for another novel too. :[

But for tips: You could use a character name that has a meaning to it that relates to the character and his/her ethnic background.
Babynames.com can help you for names. :D

You know, if we all wrote short stories and maybe even small novelias, we COULD fill out the minimal requirements to "win" this.

But yeah, ******** it, I'll enter. Give me a reason to finish writing my already long story based on my old Dragoon OC, Redmond. Or I could write the Shard story from scratch...

We'll see what comes out first.

Hey I just started my story. Got my first 2000 words down, yay! Kinda hating on my writing style for this piece and I want to go back and edit the s**t out of this, but whatever, it's quantity right? xD

I literally just thought of the plot on my friend's sofa this morning. Haven't fleshed out all the details yet, but I'll wing it I suppose.

How's everyone doing?

Lol here's my piss poor excuse for a blurb thing:

Quote:
Eris is a highly trained, highly skilled assassin, working in a dimension different to ours, who's recently received a bit of a demotion and has been saddled with a lot of grunt work. Despondent and grumpy, she seeks more thrills from her life, by hijacking someone else's assassination assignment. She gets more than she bargains for though, when the presence of a mysterious girl makes her question her life's work.

Yeah I'm gonna revamp that when I finish since I think my plot's gonna change. xD

I'd be interested in everyone else's ideas, if you'd like to share? :B
