Should prostitution be legal? What do you think and why?

For this debate, I will define prostitution as a man or a woman agreeing to have sex solely for the purpose of receiving money after.

As long as the whores stay clean and do not spread diseases I'm fine with it.

World's oldest profession. I think they provide a nessicary service and that it should be legal but, it should be closely monitered. As long as they stay clean it should be allowed.

I don't think it should be legal. Not everyone is smart enough to use protection. I'd rather not have an epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases.

Once it's legal the government is going to totally tax the s**t out of it. =3=

Though I think it should be legal, but then again the government would twist s**t around like those sick bastards always do.

You guys have made some good points. I'd like to say that if prostituiton was legal, we could regulate it. We could establish laws that help keep the women clean and make sure they are treated fairly. If prostituiton is illegal there would be no standards or controls whatsoever.

But its possible that the laws could get out of hand and end up screwing somebody over.

I think it should be legal but regulated for the safety of the women and the men. Prostituting on the streets would be illegal as its just plain dirty. Instead it would be glamorized. What would be legal is escort services where the employers are bound by any and all laws regarding employment. the prostitutes would not have to provide services they did not want to. Clients would be matched with employees for good business. And there would be laws though I don't know what about what sort of places you take your escort and how long you can have them for their safety. I think legalizing could benifeit over all. Oh and all clientell have to provide clean STD tests.

I agree with you. This way prostitutes would retain their rights, and in time they might become respected members of the community.

It's a good idea. Though, I think the protitutes should have clean STD tests in order to work, too.

I agree with a lot of the reasons that have been given on legalizing prostitution.

I do have a question though. Part of the system always suggested (or implemented, as there are places where prostitution is legal) for legalized prostitution is that the prostitutes would be required to submit to regular STD screenings. Which is a good idea. Part of the whole point is to clean up this business. But what happens to the girl who all of a sudden tests positive? Most likely, she acquired the disease on the job, her client provided an old test and had become infected afterward, before sleeping with her, or it had been a false negative (I think those can happen...).
What happens to her? Does she get thrown out on the street? Does workers comp cover any treatments she might require? Regular STD screenings would be essential to running a safe and successful brothel, but how do you handle the positive tests?

A clientel record is kept for this very purpose. If the woman after being hired tests positive and it's curable workers comp covers the treatment. If not then they cover treatment for say 6 months or so and she has to find a job in another industry. Her employers would also test clients until one came up negative and sue the client after that (The source). This is how the track AIDS. Though the law suites may get messy. I would say there would have to be laws about supplying a false STD test.

That's a great explanation. Thank you!

I feel sorry for any girl trying to find another job with "whore" on her resume, but that's life I guess.

it would probably be more like professional escort on her resume. It is also possible she could keep her job but not provide those services since escorts can also provide dates to functions of for people who are tired of the single life.

Well I think if this went on long enough, being a whore wouldn't be a bad thing anymore.

Okay, here's a con:

If we legalize prostitution we are sending the message that it is okay. Most people might agree with that. But would you want your (hypothetical) children to hear that message? How would you feel if your daughter wanted to be a prostitute, or your son hired an "escort"?
