Girls in Anime

So this has really been bugging me lately: all the girls in the action anime i watch are almost always useless (Orihime from bleach is the best example). Anyone have a suggestion for an anime that well doesn't do that? Or just wanna rant? Because its fairly annoying to me... smile

I hate useless, weak, moe characters! Urgh! I also hate uber cutesy art style. As for anime I'd suggest...

- Gundam Wing (Has a lot of strong females, they're just not main characters)

- Claymore

- Pandora Hearts (some of the girls)

- Final Fantasy XIII (>.> It's a game, but with the number of cut scenes it might as well be an anime)

- Last Exile

- Fate Stay Night

- Madlax

- Noir

- Sailor Moon : )

- Chrono Crusade

I'm not sure, but I think it was Haibone Renmei that had a pretty good female character. I've been looking for some where there were some strong female roles in them, too.
I find Orihime annoying, same with Hinata from Naruto, she's so cutsie she has no personality. Sakura was pretty bad in the beginning, but I find she gets better as the series progresses.

Uhm...I'm just not sure of anymore that the person above me didn't mention xD

well, there sakura from naruto, since she useless in the first season, but just there just to show how mush she wants to do sasuke. but, when he begin healing, she get better. she don't do nothing in shippuden, just fight sasori, then after that, nothing willy. just bieng the dog she is.

Basically any of the girls from Soul Eater. Maka Albarn is the best example of a girl kicking a** yet she can be girly as well. Or Tsubaki; she may seem plain but she can really beat people up. LOL

I agree with the whole Orihime thing though. And Hinata. Even though Hinata's my second favorite girl from Naruto (Temari's my first fave), she just sat there the first season and even the second season. Dx

I'm going to expand on your complaint and say that how women are written in most media in general bugs me. Men are written as people, but women aren't, and it results in female characters not really having a purpose besides obsessing over a guy and/or getting kidnapped. I can't stand it.

Anyway, female characters that actually do something:
- Balsa from Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit
- Kino from Kino's Journey
- The Major from Ghost in the Shell
- Several characters in Black Lagoon
- Most Miyazaki movie protagonists
- Utena from Revolutionary Girl Utena

Machika from Immortal Rain is badass.
The girls in Soul Eater.
Rosette in Chrono Crusade.
Taiga in Toradora!

Though i adore Sakura i agree, she's pretty useless along with Hinata.

Same applies to Amu from Shugo Chara. I find her a repulsive charactor.

Kairi from Kingdom Hearts? Useless as well. She's just there to annoy.

Also Yuki from Vampire Knights, she's useless.

But some anime with good female charactors are as follows:
Hellsing (Seras Victoria and Intrega Hellsing! <3 )
Pandora Hearts (As much as i hate Alice, she's tough. )
Hirugashi no Naku Ki (Rena! *o* )
Ghost in the shell (Major. ='3 )
Wolf's rain (Hey, some of the girls are great! )

It reflects the views the Japanese have on women. In that part of the world, culturally women are still seen as the lower order and there is a lot of sexism.

The worst example is Fruits Basket imo, that is my very, VERY guilty pleasure. Haru is an idiot.

I love Fruits Basket! And Haru is my favorite haha Rin isn't the weak type at all though. Neither is Uo-chan. Tohru is pretty helpless but there are some girls in there that are totally tough like Tohru's mom Kyoko

Rei from Neon Genesis Evangellion (Badass)

Rei? Emotionless girl Rei? Clone-of-Shinji's-mother Rei? I'm clearly missing something here; there are several things I would call Rei, but 'awesome' and 'badass' are not among them.

Useless:
-Sailor Mercury, Sailor Moon.

I might be misremembering since I haven't watched the show in a while, but I'm tempted to challenge this, as well. She wasn't the strongest fighter, but I seem to recall her being more of the team strategist which is a role that's far from useless.

I actually like some parts of Hinata's [naruto] personality. But i couldn't actually like her as a whole, because of her complete and utter lack of spine. It's not even a believable amount of extreme shyness, it's beyond anything. Why the hell is she a ninja?

Some strong female characters:
Rin from Daughters of Mnemoysene. It's a weird a** anime but at least the lead female character is a strong one. I guess.
Balsa from Moribito. She was cool.
Junko from Sunabozu. Actually, almost all the females in Sunabozu are strong and smart. Lol, even though he objectifies all of them.
Re-L from ergo proxy. She was a bratty b***h, but at least she could kick some a**.

I can't think of any more off the top of my head.
