Me, I thought it died out in the middle ages...that was until my friend Tanya was all upset about her cousin's wedding. Why be upset about a wedding you ask? Well here are the reasons.
1.her cousin is 18...and really immature 2.the guy is 24 3.she has only met him ONCE 4.it is completely arranged by their parents
I was pretty shocked because nobody actually asked the girl...or guy how they felt on the matter. I mean its not really something that should be overlooked. Yes the guy has money but is that really a good reason to marry someone. What do you think? Arranged marriage a way to get a perfect match, or a sure fire recipe for divorce?

I hate the idea. ><
Or any idea that takes away our freedom of emotions towards anything. She cant even have a boyfriend she likes now, because this cousin of a friend's is marrying a man she only met once.
I think its illogical, barbaric, and cruel all around.

I don't like it. :l People should have the option of who they're going to marry. Marriage should be about love, not money.

Ugh, that's horrible. Marriage should be about spending the rest of your life with someone you love, not someone you hardly know. :I

I think that in some circumsancs, it can be a good thing. There were a couple examples from my sociology textbooks about it. One example was a woman asked her father to find her a husband. Se gave her father a list of what she wanted, and within a year, her and the young man were married.
In some religions, it's still practiced. I don't see a problem with it a long as all parties consent, or if the soon to be wedded have the final say.

It depends on the people, and their view of marriage. While I myself would definitely refuse an arranged marriage, I have seen people who have gone through one, and are actually very happy together. Usually, the parents would -naturally- want to make the best match for their child, and if they have a very good relationship and the parents know what their child is like and the child trusts their parents to pick the best possible candidate for him/her, then I can see how it might not seem like such a bad thing to them. Also, I know that sometimes, the parents will only present choices, and if the couple do not like the match, they can refuse the marriage.Of course, there are also cases where an ulterior motive is behind the marriage, such as alliance between two businesses, or as you mentioned, for money. Now, that would be considerably more difficult than the previous case, but again, it depends on the people and their view of marriage. Many cultures do still consider marriage as an obligation, especially for the women, and they learn to accept it as a duty and learn to love their husbands in their own ways. It would be foolish to say that all arrange marriages are good, I am well aware that many do lead to miserable experiences, but it'd also be ignorant to say that all of them are bad, as there are obviously some very happy couples who have gotten together through arranged marriages.

Personally I am opposed to it. Unfortunately it still happens over the world whether we like it or not. And if your friend is 18 and lives in Canada or the US. She could have fought it.
I am a huge sucker for love and a big believer in free will. I believe that if you don't love them then you shouldn't marry them. Despite what your family wants.
