Jake walked up to the doors of the Nuvema Town Pokemon Lab, paused, took a deep breath as he looked to the sky, then proceeded to knock on the door. After two long years of serving tables in the local diner, Jake had finally saved a sufficient amount of money to start a journey of his own.
Now, at age seventeen, Jake would be receiving his first ever pokemon, and beginning a journey of his own.
The door quickly swung open. "Hello?" A young woman in a lab coat greeted Jake. She was full of energy, but despite this and her age, she still held an aroma of professionalism to her. "Oh, Jake, how nice to see! How're things going at the Nuvema Diner?"
Jake shook his head, "Actually, Professor, yesterday was my last day." He had a large grin on hsi face.
Professor Juniper's face lit up in excitement. "Then that must mean," she said, taking a few steps back. "You're read for your journey! Follow me!"
Juniper turned around and walked to the back of the lab. Jake followed. Jake had never been inside Juniper's lab before. The lab looked mroe like a museum than it did a research center. The shelves were lined with rocks, gems, and fossils. The tables were covered in dust and also filled with their own sets of fossils and rocks.
The back of the lab, however, was much cleaner, and ful of all kinds of lab equipment and computers. Juniper led Jake to the corner, where there was a table which contained three separate pokemon.
"These are the Unova regional starter pokemon," Juniper said with a smile. "Meet Snivy, Tepig, and Oshawott" She released three pokemon from their pokeballs, revealing a snake, pig, and an otter.

Guy walked into the lab just as Juniper was sending out her pokemon. She looked up at the trainer, down at her watch, then back at the trainer with an expression of excitement. "Oh, you must Guy!" Guy nodded.
"I wasn't expecting you for another half hour, but no matter. I've already got the starter pokemon....." Juniper hit her forehead with her palm. "I'm sorry, I wasn't expecting Jake, here to be starting his journey today. I'll be right back with another pokemon."
Juniper walked into a separate room of the laboratory and shortly returned with a pokeball in her hand. "Come on out Pawniard, you'll be meeting your new trainer today!"
Juniper threw the pokeball into the air and a black and red pokemon with daggers for hands emerged. "Pawniard!" He shouted. He began to swipe his hand violently through the air in excitement.
"Oh no!" Juniper shouted. "Pawniard, you'll have to calm down, buddy! You'll scare of the trainers!" Pawniard didn't seem to understand, and stabbed the table ith his fist to show off.
Guy walked over to the Pawniard, "Calm down, little guy. You don't need to show off for anybody." Pawniard removed his fist from the table and turned to face Guy. The two exchanged smiles.
"I'll take Pawniard," Guy said.
"Oh really?" Juniper questioned. "But you haven't met the other three, yet!"
Guy shook his head. "There's no need," he said.
Juniper nodded. "Alright then, I'll go get your pokedex."
Guy stopped her. "I don't need a pokedex," he said. "I already know everything there is about every pokemon in the Unova region. The dex would collect dust if you gave it to me."
Juniper gave an uncomfortable smile. Then turned back to the other trainer. "Alright, then Jake, have you made up your mind?"

Jake played with the three pokemon as Juniper and Guy talked. Out of the three pokemon, Jake bonded the most with Tepig. Tepig was outgoing, confident, and energetic.
Upon hearing Guy say that he already knew everything about every Unova pokemon, Jake and Tepig exchanged bewildered looks, and silently laughed together at the trainer's remark.
"Alright then Jake, have you made up your mind?" Juniper asked.
Jake got to his feet and picked Tepig up and set him on his shoulder. "Yes, I have, professor, I choose Tepig."
"That's wonderful," Juniper said. "The two of you will make a great partnership. Now, here is your pokedex and some pokeballs to get you started off. If you need any help along your journey, here is my number so you can contact me."
Jake placed the pokedex and pokeballs into his bag. "Thank you so much, Juniper. I'll be sure to keep you updated on my journey."
Juniper smiled, "That sounds wonderful. And the same goes to you, Guy. If you ever want to, feel free to give me a call! Oh, that reminds me! If any of you need a place to store your pokemon, they're always welcome here at my laboratory! I've got a ranch out back that the pokemon would just love!"
Jake nodded and smiled. He then turned to Guy. "So, how about a pokemon battle?"

Guy crossed his arms and laughed at Jake's question. "Real brave, challenging somebody to a battle when you clearly have the type advantage. You're pathetic."

"Excuse me?" Jake said, taken aback by Guy's comment. "I didn't even know I had a type advantage. And besides, it's only a friendly battle."

Guy smirked. "Didn't even know, huh? No surprise there. No matter, given your intelligence...or lack of, I should say...the battle should be a fair one with the type advantage factored in." Guy walked outside the lab and took his place for a pokemon battle.

"If your skill is as great as your attitude is, then this should be an interesting battle. Either way, Tepig and I will be the winners, right buddy?" Jake turned to Tepig, who responded by oinking proudly back.
"Alright, Guy. You've got the first move."

"Alright then, Pawniard, use Faint Attack!" Paawniard jumped into the air and then dove down at Tepig with a tackle, his body began to fade at the start of the attack, but returned to it's normal state at the end.

"Tepig, dodge!" Tepig jumped into the air, dodging the Faint Attack. "Now, use Ember!"

Guy laughed at Jake's command to dodge. Tepig jumped into the air, but Pawniard simply kicked off the ground and struck Tepig in the air. "What a fool. Don't you know that Faint Attack can't miss? Looks like this battle will be a lot easier than we expected, Pawniard." Guy laughed.
Once the Faint Attack struck, Tepig let out the Ember attack. "Now, Pawniard, let's show this noob what dodging really looks like!" Pawniard backflipped, avoiding the Ember attack. "Now use Scratch!" Pawniard then ran at Tepig with a Scratch attack.

"Arrgh, Tepig, use Tail Whip!" This was Jake's first pokemon battle, and he hadn't realized how much knowledge and focus was required to win one. Tepig smacked Pawniard with his tail in attempt to lower his defense stat.

Upon Tepig's Tail Whip, Guy's mouth went from a smirk to an overexcited grin. "You do realize what you've just done, done you?" Guy laughed as Pawniard's claws sharpened and extended, showing more of a sign of attack growth than of defense drop.
"Pawniard's ability is Defiant. When one of his stats are lowered, his attack is doubled. Now Pawniard, finish this off with Faint Attack!"
Pawniard charged at Tepig with another Faint Attack.

Dumbfounded, Jake ran his hand through his hair. Pawniar'd Faint Attack hit, leaving Tepig fainted on the battle field.
"Tepig, are you alright, buddy?" Jake ran to his fainted pokemon and quickly fed him a revive and sprayed him with a potion. "Tepig!" The pokemon cheered. Tepig licked Jake in the face then ran in circles excitedly.
"I guess I have a lot of learning to do," Jake said, extending a hand to Guy. "Nice job."

Guy ignored Jake's hand, refusing to shake it. "Yeah, Pawniard did do well. And you? Well, to say you have some learning to do would be an understatement."
Guy and Pawniard then turned their backs to Jake and headed to Route 1. "Next time," Guy said over his shoulder, "I hope to see some improvement in your battling. The problem is, you're and uneducated noob. There's a trainer school in Striaton City. I suggest we don't battle until after you've payed that place a visit."
