LMAO ok so I posted(on another different forum) something asking about building toy drive in a dog who isn't all that toy motivated and I got responses like...

Quote:
You cant, the dog either has it or it does not, end of. It is the dog that will decide what motivates it and what it finds rewarding, not you, and whatever that is, that is what you supply.

and other things...

Abby was more food motivated than she is toy motivated(which I accepted), but as of now she's probably equally as motivated by both! Apparently I did the "impossible" according to the people who said that I can't build her toy drive.

She now goes spazztic when I bring out her tug and where as a few months go I had to actually initiate the play by spazzing out myself and even when I did that she would only play for a few seconds before quiting. And now it's something she is willing to work for where as before not so much unless it was her now destroyed pheasant toy.

The second I bring her tug out shes like "ZOMG ME WANTZ" and goes straight into play/work mode. And thank god for this because right now using the tug is way easier to build her forward drive for agility than using treats

So in yo face people who said I can't build toy drive!

uughh, maybe you should post here instead of there xp

seriously, that's so stupid. If you couldn't get a food motivated dog to like a toy...there's be so many less flyball and frisbee dogs. No dog is BORN with a toy drive, a prey drive sure, but getting them to associate that toy with prey is no different than getting a food motivated dog to be motivated by other things.

Maybe I should! sides it's better over here anyways. I just need to put aside some time to actually get on and post things!

special dog seems to actually be enjoying agility class. I might try and use her tug as a reward monday, but doubt she'll go for it with all the other dogs around. Plus foods still a bit higher on her list

You can always bring both! I like working with Toys because, well I just find dogs work better. Tricks and treats work well but when you're doing a high energy sport, you don't want the dog to be stopping to eat. Using a toy and rewarding with play helps keeps the energy going. Especially if you're doing distance work! A dog working for food will always want to come towards you, a dog who will chase a toy can be taught to get out a lot faster.

ex. Cowboy "get out!" Points and throws toy. Cowboy runs away from me, good dog. Then treat. Actually I didn't really train it like that. Cause I was worried my get out command would be kind of like when you pretend to throw a tenis ball for a dog. He might always be confused. But you get the point lol.
