Philosophical Rant based on RL below, you've been warned.
I have standards when it comes to friends- I want my friends to be 80% non-flakes- roughly translated, if for every 5 times we agree to do something, one or less of those times things should come up.
On one hand, sometimes stuff comes up- things happen outside of our control. On the other- we can control what we say to people, when we make our commitments and it is important for people to not write checks with their mouths that their butt can't cash.
On one hand, friends are supposed to stand by each other, through thick and thin- but this can't be a one way street, it's not ok to bail on someone because your their friend and "they'll understand".
Relationships are work- if they weren't they'd be acquaintances. I'm a very reliable person, and I learned a long time ago that people will use a friendship as an excuse to treat me poorly and I got tired of it. Friendship should be a reason to go above and beyond, not a reason to flake.
I know this can sound "judgmental"- but come on, everyone always says "use your best judgement," so why is friendship something that we're supposed to throw our judgment out the window on and let others treat us poorly over? Just like being a kinky switch doesn't make me someone's doormat, neither does being someone's friend.
