[HH 5 vs. ??] Unlikely Heroes (Ami/Lex/Mads/Ryan/Wilson)

How in the world did their group end up so big? She'd just wanted Madeline and Wilson. Even Wilson she was touchy about. Just Madeline then. Now she had the irritating trainee that was too trigger happy, and the intermediate who was nice enough, but too unknown for her to trust fully. This wasn't okay.

In fact, it was unfair. She shouldn't have put up with this. Ami cursed herself for not simply putting her foot down and saying no.

Yet there she was, with no way to change it. A small notebook in her hand as she walked through the fog with tiny, angry steps. She scribbled quickly and quietly with her messy cursive loops, trying to keep her pen from snapping in half as she did so.

Wilson was fine with the large group. Actually, he rather liked it. Bigger groups meant more people and more minds put together in one place and more company.

Except this group was just a smidge awkward for him. He threw wary glances toward both of the Life trainees. Wilson liked both of them; he really did. It was just that the current circumstances… He ran a hand through his hair and sighed before he let himself fall toward the back of the group. “Good question.” Hands in his pockets, Wilson looked around, but found nothing particularly interesting. “Insanity creatures usually have that foggy appearance, right? So I guess if you see that just follow it, but don’t get too close.” And hopefully it wouldn’t attack them.

Well, now that they were all in irritable moods, this was going to get intense.

Or so it seemed. Madeline sighed as she stomped after Wilson, her arms crossed defensively across her chest as though to ward away the thin tendrils of fog that seemed to mark everywhere and anywhere they passed. Just like Ryan, she was also considering the fact that this seemed more like a task suited to the Life Division rather than her own. After all, Suns rushed in, hit things, and called it a day, and while she'd been a pre-med student way back when, the thought of it was stuffed beneath hours and hours of practice that made her mind full up with where to land a killing blow in circumstances A, B, C, and D. It was difficult just remembering how to do research, making her even more irritated the more and more she stalked alongside her group.

"So we're just supposed to wander around until we see some ugly mug in the crowd?" Madeline waved her fingers at the emptiness around them and sighed, looking around the dreary place they'd ended up. "Seems like a pain to me." She laughed sardonically and unraveled her arms from her chest. "Then again, I kind of forgot how to be patient, I guess. Courtesy of the Sun Division."

Really, were they just meant to keep wandering around though...?

Madeline exhaled in mild exasperation.

Lex only huffed multiple times as they stomped through the lawn, wondering if the mist was going to stain his leather boots. He also wondered when they were going to stop complaining and just get to their assigned job.

"Why don't we all just take a moment and enjoy the fact that hey, we're still breathing and nothing's ran us through yet."

Ami scowled at Madeline. "Stop whining, you're not a little kid," she commented, mouth twitching into a flat out snarl. Even Madeline was annoying the crap out of her.

She merely cocked an eyebrow at Ryan. "Isn't death's job intelligence and scouting?" she said skeptically, rolling her eyes and looking at Wilson. Ryan must've been a pretty inexperienced trainee if he was asking what they were going to be looking for- it wasn't his job to know. That was death's. He was just supposed to hit thing when they told him to.

Wilson, on the other hand, got an appreciative smile and gentle nod. Yes, yes Wilson. Thank you for explaining it to the idiots that she couldn't be bothered with. He was so nice and patient with people. Even insanity couldn't broach the rose-tinted glasses Ami had for Wilson's good guy nature.

For Lex? Nothing for Lex bye. His comment was so juvenile and optimistic that she simply couldn't be bothered.

Everyone was grumpy. Everyone, that is, except Wilson. Wilson was tired and wondered if he would give himself a headache by the end of this. He sighed and crossed his arms, pressing his cheek against the palm of his hand. “Unfortunately, yes,” he answered Madeline, fighting back the exasperation that threatened to spill into his words. “It would be nice if we could have detectors of some sort, but unfortunately it seems the fog is all around us.”

He would have appreciated Lex’s words if he didn’t sound as agitated. Wilson sighed again. He answered Ami’s smile with a weak one of his own. The hunter almost groaned. “Come on, guys. Let’s not get so irritated. Please?” he weakly protested. Wilson appeared startled when Ryan suddenly pointed a finger at him. Then he sighed and threw up his arms before he sidestepped the group and headed toward the front. “Admittedly, that makes sense. I’ll take the front and scout ahead. Just make sure nothing gets me from behind, okay?”

The fog swirled, condensing, fading away to reveal that a certain weremantis had been reformed. He was larger in this insanity stricken form that normal, standing well over 10 feet tall as he saw the group of invaders and moved in to attack.

A light blow, a warning to two of them. Leave his home alone.

Lex only sighed and rolled his eyes at the conversation that was happening. Why was he so irate? Why did it even matter? Just keep a level head and -

CRACK.

A single shot, purely out reflex, sung out and landed in front of the bug. The bullet's shooter stood there, wide eyed, lowering the flintlock pistol.

"Alright, everyone keep the drama down and get this piece of work out of here."

Ami was actually thinking about turning around and punching Ryan, but she didn't have time for that. She fell from the gentle tap, due to her exhaustion from lacking a weapon. Trapped underneath Yin's legs.

There was a mantis on top of her.

A giant, insanity-ridden mantis.

A scream would have been an understatement for the noise that erupted from Ami's mouth. "Get it off! GET IT OFF." She would lie later about the tears forming in the corners of her eyes. Ami had hated bugs from her birth, but after the horseman ... Now they just brought her back to the dank prison cell. Swarm after swarm, boring into her skin, crawling up into her mind, and making a nest.

Every ounce of courage, every bit of work she'd done to rehabilitate herself from the horsemen was gone. The voices pushing at her mind, the images of the prison cell. All she could do was scream and kick from under the mantis.

Wilson gave the giant mantis creature a “wow really?!” expression as he gave his mind a moment to process everything properly before Gramps stepped in. [Get moving kiddo! OR I’M GOING TO—] He tore off the goggles and felt the weight of his canons fall into his arms. He shrugged on the pack and put on his mask before he fiddled with his canons. Wilson shot Lex an exasperated look just before his face disappeared behind the gas mask. The wires of his weapon clacked loudly as he heard Ami’s scream. He flinched. That was right. The life trainee was deathly afraid of bugs, wasn’t she? A creature like this was a horrible match up for her.

“Ami, calm down! You have to calm down!” he shouted at her as he rushed in and smacked the mantis to get the bug to release its hold on her. He kept his voice raised, but still steady. “Calm down!” Wilson tried to grab Ami’s arms and pull her away from the area. “Ami, you have to stop screaming and get yourself together!”

He turned toward Ryan. “You’re going to say that now of all times?!”

"Did you know," Madeline said in somewhat of a daze, "that sexual cannibalism is common in mantises in captivi -- "

Well, fine.

Arsen fell into her hands with a familiar thump even as chaos broke out around her at every angle, from Snarky Ryan to Screaming Ami to Good Guy Wilson to I-Dont-Remember-Your-Name-But-Nice-Try. For ******** sake, they were never going to get anything done at this rate. And with Wilson already on Ami's case, Madeline set her eyes on the big picture; the giant ********' mantis. This'll definitely go in the notebook of snarky comments, She thought moodily with a low little laugh, full up on sardonic anger and ready to get s**t done.

"Hey, batta, batta," She yelled and swung hard, the mace connecting soundly with a crackle like thunder against the Mantis's body - or at least she hoped so. "Swing!"

Jumping back on her feet, she glanced over at Ryan with a battle-thirsty smirk.

"Shall we get down to business, monsieur, or are we going to sit and make snarky comments at each other all night long first?" She teased.

( Someone really ought to teach you the essence of timing. )

Yin relatively liked these invaders. Three of them did not even want to attack him. He did not feel the same way. He directed his attention to a new pair. One of which was the one that had jumped and landed a hit on his thorax, not really that close to his head, but what she could reach. Those two he aimed a well deserved swipe at with his claws.
