Beliefs and Lifestyle
Many, if not the vast majority, of the members of the family and herd are firm believers in the Loa. They're Gods for each aspect and walk of life, be it life, death, love, lust or anything that can be imagined. The herd mother, however, has been known to be debt to some Loa spirits and has risked her own children and family to repay them what she owes in life.
Herd members each have made themselves some sort of charm, amulet or other item used for their own protection or healing. Others will use them for poisoning enemies, or anyone who would otherwise bring harm into the herd. The prime family each has a piece around their neck as their charm.
Lifemates are unusual within the herd and family. Flings are much more common and not looked down upon. The young will be taken care of and raised within the herd, but will be looked down upon or exiled should they not believe in or wish to be part of the beliefs. (Exile and such is the choice of the owner and will not be forced upon a foal or filly born within the herd.)
Anyone may join so long as they are not skinwalker, purely evil and wishing to seek harm from the inside, and are willing to be part of the beliefs of the herd and herd mother. It is, however, not unusual for members to be involved romantically or otherwise with skinwalkers, kalona or otherwise banned breeds and personality types. There are children that have come from such lustful meetings.
Honorary members are those the herd mother considers family, but would rather not be tied down to living in the swamp and practicing within the family. Some children and grandchilden as well as ex-mates and love interests are considered honorary members, while others may be exiled or banned from herd grounds due to possible harm.

Positions and Ranks
The herd mother, or 'Queen' is the leader, always female and approves any member of the herd. This includes growing foals and fillies. She has the power to exile anyone she does not find suitable or betrays and brings harm onto the herd in any way. She is also the one primarily in charge of administering potions, blessings, curses, poisons, charms and anything else one might come to her for. Should she not be available, the one seeking help will be referred to a healer among the ranks.
Should anything happen to the herd mother, an heir will have already been chosen. The only time a male will be leader of the herd is when a 'Queen' cannot be found suitable. Once one is born or found, the male will be removed from the rank and the female will take over.
In the case of the family, the immediate heir is the herd mother's first born daughter.
Protectors are guardians of the immediate bedding and home grounds. They do not stray far unless it is to remove threats. This position is typically held by older males, but it would not be unusual for a female to join their ranks if she has proven herself worthy of the job. Protectors will also be responsible for the training of any member who is to be a scout.
Scouts and patrols are members working under the protectors. They watch the grounds of the entire territory and alert the herd of threats, strangers and anything else that gets too close.
Healers are those talented and blessed with the knowledge of herbs and potions. Should any form of these fail, many will also have been trained or blessed with the knowledge of healing (or even cursing) through charms. These can be administered without permission of the herd mother.
Some healers can and will be responsible in training new members or younglings in the healing arts.
Farseers are trained and well versed in the knowledge and ability of foresight. Many times they are able see predictions and essences of the future and events. While they cannot really see complete details without many years of dedication, they can still give enough details to usually help in a situation.
Den-mothers are in immediate charge of expecting mothers and helping with raising the young. They will generally have full control of the younglings should the mother, father or both parents resume full duties once the foal or filly is old enough to not require their constant care. Each den-mother is chosen specifically by the herd mother and then by whichever family or expecting mother seeks her help.
While this position is traditonally female, males have been known to be able to protect and raise younglings.
Gatherers are entrusted with knowledge of what herbs, roots and any fruits or vegetables are needed by the herd mother or healers. While out collecting what is needed, it is not unusual for them to also return with bones, bark, wood, antlers, beads or anything else that could be used in the making of charms or decoration.
Apprentices are usually young foals and fillies learning their rank for when they are old enough to be on their own. Sometimes a member will take an apprentice who is not a member of the herd, allowing them to become an honorary member or full fledged member should the herd mother approve.
Anyone may come seeking the herd for an apprenticeship, so long as they do not mean harm in anything they do.
Members are others within the herd who do not have a specific job. They generally do their own thing or offer help to others if needed.
Honorary members are still mates, lovers or children of members of the herd that have not been accepted or sworn in officially. They are welcome within the grounds unless they have been exiled and banned from returning.
Exiled members are those who have refused to accept the herds beliefs and learning. If they are a threat, oppose what the herd stands for and are generally a nuisance they will not be allowed within the territory. Scouts will be alerted and on the look out for these particular cases.

Primary Family Status
Guedes is the Queen Mother, current leader of the herd obviously. Pretty much most descions end with her regardless of what the others say. If she rejects something, that's it, end of story and pushing the issue (while possible) upsets her. She primarily will issue orders, or state jobs that need to be done or approved. Same goes with a lot of the training and work amongst the herd and healers. She has sacrificed the lives of her children to pay back a debt to the Loa, so if they were to ever come calling to pay on those debts there would be heartbreak for quite a few. No remorse was had on Guedes' thought behind doing this. She is also slated to die in the future (once I get other plots and some more breedings out of the way) and that will end her time in the herd completely.
Mar'li is the oldest daughter and immediate hier to the herd. She's very quiet and keeps to herself for the most part with little to say or do in regards to the word of her mother. She accepts that it is absolute law and the day she takes over she can either decide to keep things in place as they are, or allow change. She is also primary head of the healers, but with them will accept advice, suggestions or anything else that comes along...it of course just has to be approved with mother if it is a major change. She's also the golden child as she has produced the most productive children for the herd.
Atal'ai is Mar'li's half brother and severely touched in the head. He's made many poor choices, mostly involving his two breeding partners (a naga and a skinwalker) and continues to disappoint mother. He's only good as protection for the herd at this point in Guedes' eyes because he knows when to fight and doesn't back down. He is often seen walking circles around the swamp and talking to himself... He will never stand a chance at being even a temporary herd leader. Even in the absence of his sisters, daughters and neices.
Amani is the more favored male child, Mar'li's son and currently primary leader of the protectors. His claws, while questionable by Guedes at first, have proven his worth by being able to grip things and used for hunting and fighting. He also tends to be fairly quiet but will open up to anyone if the need arises. He stands the best chance at stepping in and being a temporary leader.
Lukou is Mar'li's daughter and the most innocent and bubbly of the children and grandchildren. She understands the needs and wants of the herd and accepts everything, but also lives her own little world at times. She's the most sociable and the one most likely to greet and attend to the needs of anyone that comes seeking the herd for help. This innocence also serves to get her into trouble one day with a boy of Arge's. She loves going out and hunting down plants, herbs, anything to bring back and show grandmother for praise. She'll do anything to get out of the swamp and explore the world, having gone as far as the northern forest and mountains thus far. She's currently standing at being third in line of inheritance.
Rohk'jin is the problem child, born of skinwalker blood and has it out for Guedes. She wishes to destroy the family and herd from the inside and stage a hostile takeover. Of course she doesn't act out of place publicly or say anything that would damn her. Instead she's eager to please, trying to worm her way into good graces, especially since Guedes barely accepts her as a grandchild and keeps waiting for a day she slips up and can be banished or killed. She will be the eventual death of Guedes, how I'm not yet sure, but it's there. After that her banishment will come and bring trouble for the herd.
Naj'entus is the cursed naga child who rejects everything about the family and their ways. It terrifies him to the point of massive paranoia. Guedes banished him for his rejection and so he's afraid of even being seen near the swamp or any member of the family. He believes that they will kill him should he cross their path for any reason. He's mated to Ting Tang and lives north at the base of the mountains, only straying close enough to the swamp to go to the beaches where his naga mother's family and herd reside.
Walla Walla is Naj'entus' daughter and just as paranoid as he is. Though she has never met the family or herd, she has heard tell of them. Mostly from her father about being dangerous and will kill her if she crosses their path. She is considered 'exiled' only because of her father, though the herd and Guedes do not know of her and her sister's existence. By all rights they could be accepted later. She remains mostly paranoid of her own mother Ting Tang. While her mother loves for her, Walla has got it stuck in her head that she is out to get her and is going to eat her one day. She spends most of her time in a cove at the beach with a lovely mer named Trida who has taught her how to swim.
