I pose a question to all you lovely ladies: Who here carries something in self-defense? Whether it's mace or a weapon, I'd like to know. Mostly so I can prove to the guys I know that my friends and I are not the only women outside of the military and law enforcement that carries something other than mace.

And another question: Is it legal in your state or country?

I myself carry a 5.5" European dagger, which, while just barely legal blade length (Texas state knife laws dictate that the blade can be no longer than 5.5"), it would be considered illegal for the very fact that it's a dagger. However, daggers are normally classified as a fixed blade with the blade sharpened 1" down on both sides, and mine is sharpened 3/4" down. So I'm kind of in the grey on that one.

Which makes no sense. By Texas state law, a 2" folder with a pocket clip is illegal, but a 15" Bowie swinging free from a belt is legal. I will admit that I might be slightly wrong on whether my dagger is legal or not. This is what I've gathered from reading through state laws, which is made rather difficult by the fact that amendments cannot be repealed from the Texas constitution, only ratified, so we have several conflicting (or forgotten) laws. (Incidentally, my favorite obscure law is, if a person is wrongfully imprisoned in the state of Texas, the wrongly-accused party has the right to demand a horse and a gun, and, by law, they must be provided.)

i don't carry anything for self defense, no, but i did take self defense classes when i was younger and still remember all the basics which are what were put together to make the complex moves so that's a little more reasuring when i walk around compus when it's late. i would like to learn how to use daggers/knives eventually and get a permit to carry them

I generally carry a knife while I am on the street but it is illegal to carry a weapon indoors unless you have a concealed weapons permit which I am in the process of getting. My husband is really avid about my safety and for the most part we live in a nice town but I get so nervous when I have to go out at night. Especially because there are ALOT of homeless people around where I work. So for my safety (as well as the safety of my unborn child. We thought it would be safer if I learned to carry a weapon.

I don't but my friend carries pepper spray
PostPosted: Tue Nov 20, 2012 3:22 pm

No. It's illegal to have a concealed weapon here. I don't go out at night, despite this being a small town and that I'm 18, unless I'm in a group or with my parents. My only weapon I'd have is a scream or weak fighting back [I have the physique of a 10 year old, plus I have bad wrists, so I pray I don't get attacked]. If those don't work, I'm in trouble.

When I move to the city for school, I may carry a can of hairspray. May not do much, but if I can blind 'em for a second, I could try to flee. I'm scared to move, because the city is bad for murders, shooting, and stabbings...

I'd nevr even have thought of carrying something eek and i lived in the roughest parts of london, and refused to leave during the riots.

To be honest in Engalnd if you carry any kind of offensive weapon it really ups your chance of having to use it confused thats why there so much knife crime in london people think they need it "as self defence" and then they automatically pull it out at any altercation wether its strictly needed or not.

We don't really have pepper spray here, the general defence is to stick together. Even when there was a serial killer after women (ipswich 2006) all they gave us was a leaflet. The basic rule here is, if no one innocent carries any concealed weapons only the guilty can be held responsible.

To be honest im kinda concerned by the amount of you who are posting saying you do carry something ..

@Kit: The classes are good for something. I never took formal lessons. Everything I know is either self-taught or taught to me by friends. That's how I learned how to use a dagger, sword, and bo staff, but it's kind of illegal for me to carry the last two. But a piece of pipe works in a pinch.

@Shay: Pepper spray usually works. The only time I thought about carrying it, I was too young, so I made pepper bombs instead, but they were a tad bit too strong. Needless to say, I stopped using those before I used one that would end up with my family paying medical bills. And smaller knives are easier to palm. I have a friend that carries suntetsu.

@Rainbow: Congrats on the pregnancy (don't think I've said that). Texas doesn't have a concealed weapons permit, only a concealed handgun permit. Kind of stupid, but we make due. I hope you never have a reason to use the knife.

@Hotau: Just out of curiosity: Have you ever thought about carrying something? Or does your town have a low enough crime rate that it's not even worth thinking about?

@Aradia: Safety in numbers. It's the best defense if you can't carry something. Hairspray would work (it hurts like a b***h). If you want, I can tell you how to make pepper spray on your own. You can make it as weak or as strong as you want. A friend of mine tried out one she found on the Internet, and it works pretty well.

@EMPRESS: In my opinion - and I fully understand why people wouldn't agree with it - it's safer to carry something and never have to use it than it is to not carry something and need it. I remember hearing about that. It reminded me of what I'd read about the killings in the late 1800s and late 1970s. It seems to be a trend among London-area serial killers, to go after prostitutes. But seriously, a leaflet? What the hell kind of help is that supposed to be? I may not live anywhere like that (at least, I don't think Houston's like that) but we tend to be of the "rather safe than sorry" mentality and carry something. Besides, I work part-time at a bar owned by a friend, and it's near the slums. I am not going out there without something.

I have two knives that I keep in my car at all times, along with a baseball bat for idiots that try to get in my windows while at a stop sign or something.

I have a boxcutter at work I use for boxes and stuff but if someone hits me I have no problem with cutting them up.

I used to live in a bad city where it was legal to run red lights and stop signs at night because the homeless people were extremely violent.
So it was engraved in my mind to keep weapons in the car.
Crime rate was super high there.

And yes Texas does have laws about concealed weapons. I live there.
No switch blades on butterfly knives, no stiletto blades, if you carry a knife the blade must not exceed the length of your index finger.
Handguns you can have without permit, you must keep them unloaded at all times unless you are hunting.
Shotguns you do not have to have a permit for but they must remain unloaded and open in the car.
If you have "no trespassing violators will be shot" signs up you can shoot anyone with any gun permit or not that comes onto your property if they are not invited or pose a threat to your animals or family.

Our laws are vague and weird but we do have them.
I should know I sell guns and knives all the time at work.

I'm not comfortable with pepper spray or weapons since I'm always worried it could be used against me one way or another, but I do carry some things to protect myself. I have a metal whistle and at night I carry a torch flashlight like an officer (over my shoulder)

It might not seem like a big thing, but having the light up there makes you look imposing.

Its heavy, so if I had to, I could bludgeon something to death with it...

@Aftermath: I know we have laws, and that they're confusing. That's because it's considered unconstitutional - and, in the minds of our politicians, illegal - to repeal amendments. They keep adding on, so we have conflicting laws. I know we have laws regarding concealed weapons and what an illegal weapon is defined as, though the meaning of "illegal weapons" has changed several times. And the blade length was finally specified for a legal knife within the past couple of years. It's not supposed to exceed 5.5", though most LEOs don't really care unless they have cause to believe it has been used, whether in self-defense or not. I was saying we don't have a concealed weapons permit, which we don't.

@Loshka: A whistle's a better idea than screaming. It's louder and more piercing, and typically attracts more attention. And the flashlight is a good idea. It's the shadows the light casts on your features that makes you look more imposing. Torchs are usually heavier, so they tend to be a good idea.

If I could find them/still have them I'd carry my knitting needles around at my waist. I don't really carry weapons on me but my nails are rather sharp and pretty hard to break. Also using physics we can suplex a guy twice our size. Owo
