Mort came to Amityville a bright-eyed and innocent first year who had never even held a ghoul's hand (much less kiss one), with the goal to become a famous inventor pushing Halloween into the future with new technology. Or a boogeyman out to dish justice and look cool in a cape. Or both. Neither of these factors really changed over the course of his year at Amityville, but suffering has a way of changing perspective of these dreams.

When the Insanity fog first came as the students cleaned up post-Fright Night, it engulfed the tagged students and warped them into monstrous versions of themselves. Mort followed shortly after and stalked around the premises, dying and reforming multiple times in his encounters with students and horsemen; he was allowed a brief moment of sanity after Alex smashed a horseman vial on him, but it was a temporary fix. In the CYOA trip of the second half of the event, he also accrued an unhealthy amount of Insanity and had to continually suppress it with his own Fear to keep from going completely mad.

It didn't matter much in the end: he was still pulled into the fog once more and became the weapon to a fog-formed Hunter, smashing students and Hunters alike in a blind need to sate his new cravings for Fear. When he was defeated and his consciousness was released, his death was interrupted by Arel and a bottle of strange liquid that brought his Insanity levels back to more manageable levels. For a while Mort believed he was going to be alright, but Red's appearance changed the playing field drastically. She drained his Core to heal her own ailing body and came close to utterly destroying him because of it, but something small acted as the lifeline to bring him back - his distortion crystal. Red was able to toss it at a Hunter's weapon, sucking its energy dry and rendering it a stone tablet while Mort himself was revived.

The recreation was short-lived, for Red called for more distortion crystal to use in the fight against Caelius; four, including Mort, stood up and offered themselves up to get the students out from the heart of Insanity. And as a result, they literally and truly died.

And then, days and days later a miracle happened: the four were mysteriously reborn on Halloween night.

Death is nothing to Halloweeners, not really, since it just means dissipation - and it means even less so to the undead intrinsically. Every student has at some point dissipated during their time at Amityville, and even when things felt more permanent there was always a route out, however slim or horrifying. There's always a warning, however, that to dissipate too much in a short period of time can cause one's Fear to come together oddly and create disruptions. Given the amount of times Mort dissipated, semi-died, and then truly died, as well as the near-constant exposure to Insanity, it's little wonder he came away from the experience with the affliction, even as others came away clean.

It's the law of equivalent exchange at work after all.

The thing is, he's not going to sit on his hands and wait for the disease to progress and push him into despair. There are still questions to ask and answers to seek, experiments to test and research to conduct. Mort has always been a curious one, but now he has something all good mad scientists need to overcome the impossible: a desperate reach that eagerly pushes past risks and, in fact, very well embraces them in pursuit of the solution.

Alex is signing up for this! He feels terrible that Mort came out of that mess with insanity, and feels partially if not completely responsible (silly boy is silly).

He can be used to help with research, and as you already know would like to talk to Red as well XD

I'd seriously like to have him involved in this idea of core research. He's got a good reason to get heavily invested in that. Even if ends up just being for insanity purposes, it'd be awesome to get a better understanding of Fear cores in general.


And then, I would also like to sign up my horsewoman, Shaheen. If there is a cure to insanity to be had out there, she wants to be a part of it! She'll somehow need to find out about what is going on though, so I assume it will be a while before she can get dragged in~

Anyways ya you know I'm good for helping with plot ideas and such. Just wanted to make it all official that both of my chars need to be in on this!

BLABBERING AHEAD

I have futureplots that are unapproved and I don't know if they ever will be approved (especially if I never ask anyone about them hur hurr), but I'm still interested in planting related seeds where I can, just in case I ever gel my thoughts long enough to come up with a proper proposal.

Anyway. Core research intrigues me mightily, and would definitely intrigue West if he was exposed to students who saw de-tagging and de-insanitying as a possibility. The problem I have is that intriguing him is a little hard to justify at the moment. He certainly has a strong interest in anything that will keep Halloween as a whole from fading away—like knowledge of Insanity-curing artifacts—but he's not close with anyone who is afflicted (except Jericho and he's... not exactly present at the moment XD), so sparking his immediate interest is proving to be difficult since out of sight is out of mind for him.

So, yeah, I kind of have no idea how he could get involved since he doesn't know Mort, but he would make an effort to help Belladonna, Xiu, Amrita, and to a lesser extent, Shaheen, so maybe there's something there. OR NOTHING! YAY! I definitely don't want to push into your plot if there's not a place for me. heart
