So I've had recent comments about my TekTeks that they're good, BUT when I try to TekTek for other TekTeking shops, they say it's not up to their standards. So please tell me what I'm doing wrong, here are my TekTeks: Just Keep Clicking The Links...
Feedback PLEASE! And tell it to me straight, I don't care how nasty your criticism is (But not too harsh, I am a human with feelings and I just discovered that someone disliked my Topic!) Thank-You! 3nodding heart whee 4laugh

Okay, I'm going to try to give you a review without being too lenient or too critical, so I apologize in advance if it seems harsh or something. I honestly don't mean for it to be.

Okay so..

First link: are supposed to be edits, correct? The only one that really looks like an edit is the first one. The rest really just look like you made a completely new avatar with the same base/theme/color scheme. I'm not saying that they are necessarily bad, just that it really doesn't count as an 'edit' if the whole avatar is basically changed.

Second link:general rule is to only use one pose of an item unless you calculate it into the price or they specify that they have more than one of said item. The avatar is cute but it's easy to mess up in this way if you don't follow that little rule of thumb.

Third link: again, I see the 'edit' as just basically remaking the complete avatar with the same theme/color scheme, not necessarily an actual edit. The first one on the list (the last one saved, the dark blue one) looks nothing like the others at all, not even color scheme. Yes, they are all blue and white but that one is really dark while the other three are really light/wintery.

Most tektek shops go for people who are good with color matching, layering, clutter, or cohesion. While you use colors in the same color group you seem to go more toward a theme than actual balance and matching. This isn't always a bad thing because some people like these types of avatars, but most people won't go to a tektek shop and order an avatar that is unmatched clutter. If you are going for a theme, and want to work in a shop, you have to make the avatar cohesive, that way, even if it doesn't match it still flows well.

I would suggest working on your color matching, layering, and the flow of your avatars if you want to work in a shop. You have some cute tekteks but they just aren't really up to par with most successful shop workers quite yet.

Basically: If you're going for clutter (which most of the tekteks you have linked here are) most people like organized clutter over sporadic movement. If you're going for matching your shades need to match as well as the colors. This is a big thing to a lot of people. When they say matching they don't only want the same color on the base but also the same shade. If you're making an edit you shouldn't completely change the avatar.

You can have 1-2 items that stand out from the rest of the avatar, but not every item should be competing for your attention when you look at it.

You can easily form your own style and let your personality shine through in your tekteks while also making avatars that the people who venture into the dressing room will want to wear. You just need to practice to find that balance and work on it. Then you should be ready work in a shop. You will always find people who like different things but the general consensus is usually theme/color scheme, layering/simplicity, matching, organized clutter/non-clutter.

I would also suggest taking a look through the more popular tektek shops and learning from them. Look at their styles, techniques, etc and practice them for yourself. Everyone has their own little twist to their avatars so you shouldn't copy them completely, but you should do a bit of studying on it and learn these things yourself so that you can give what people want.

Lastly, make sure that you learn the differences between gaia layering and tektek layering. If you are constantly churning out avatars that don't layer correctly (or contain items that don't layer together at all) you will start to get a bad rep and lose business because that basically makes it seem like you don't know what you're doing and makes your tekteks rather useless (unless being used solely for inspiration). I don't know if you have this issue or not, it's just a general statement, I didn't take the time to check the avatars you posted for layering conflict/issues. ^^;;

This post doesn't really cover cosplay and non-matching theme avatars, but it should help you out with everything else.

Good luck with your tekteking and landing a spot in a tektek shop! ~

FINALLY! Thank-you SO, SO much for the review and advice! I finally know what I'm doing wrong. Oh and the 3rd link I forgot to edit it because the dark blue TekTek was for a customer. Once again thanks so much! 3nodding heart whee 4laugh

You're welcome, I'm just glad I could help and it didn't seem too harsh. ^_^

I actually noticed that after I replied but forgot to come back here and edit it out. xP

No problem. 3nodding

Oh! While I'm here.. here are a few avatars/tekteks that kinda show some of (not all) the things I was talking about in my first post. They aren't 'perfect' but they should give a good idea.

Only thing is, please don't use these to practice editing and stuff on. They are either personal avatars of mine or ones that I have made for other people. I didn't feel right linking you to avatars done by someone else without their permission. sweatdrop

I hope I helped you out some with your venture. ^_^

Yep, that is an edit. You can see the changes but you can also still tell that it's an alternate version of the same avatar. 3nodding

Frantic covered most of what I would have said ^_^"

I just have two things to add:

Tacking on facial items truly makes or breaks an outfit. Some of them can really fit in while others look plain silly. Not every outfit needs one of these, there are other ways to give a face personality without relying on a face or lip item. If you do want to use one, make sure it doesn't stand out way too much from the rest of the outfit. Just like with makeup in real life, the goal is to add to the look, not overpower it. Remember you have other things to use like tattoos, glasses, makeup, face paint, etc.

Even in cluttered avatars, good cluttered ones have some sort of balance. This is especially true if you're trying to work in a pair of wings, large hair, or backgrounds. I'll use some of my own personal Tekteks to show you what I mean.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
These are two versions of the same avatar that I entered into a contest (I ended up submitting the one on the right). Notice how I try to keep the same colors top to bottom and keep the same width so it doesn't look like the avatar is about to fall over.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. This is a personal Tektek.
Here, I used multiple backgrounds that complement each other as well as the outfit. They work together rather than trying to compete for your attention.

I balance the big, fluffy hat with ruffles in the dress at the bottom. I also added fishnet textures in smaller places to add more interest because of the boring color scheme.

So, I hope some of these tips helped rather than me rambling. sweatdrop

Ohhhhhhh... I guess I'm better at creating TekTeks rather then editing them. I think it's best to take your advice and just learn from others and practice TekTeking. Once again, thank-you! 3nodding heart whee 4laugh

No problem dear. ^_^
I also agree with the things Captain Silas Manner added, I just didn't think of them before. I don't do much clutter, especially in that way, so it's good to have someone else to give perspective on it anyway. xP

Captain Silas Manner

Are we in another guild together? I think you're in the fashun guild, correct.. maybe? Your name seems familiar and I remember trying to help out with that pink/blue/green avatar (even though I don't know if I posted my failed attempt at help or not lol), I just don't know where I recognize it from.

These tips definitely helped! I LOVE it when people ramble, especially when a very good friend of mine rambles. Well, Thank-you! 3nodding heart whee 4laugh

Yep, I was in Fashun for a little while. You seemed familiar too, I see the same people from all over the place (SF, Profiteers guild, NS+TG, GCD, Burn, etc) so it tends to mix and I forget where people make home on Gaia x_X I make my home all over the place.

I left Fashun quietly since I don't dabble as much in the avatars as I used to but I still love to give advice.
