Memoir of a Fallen Angel: The Bar.

A scene opens up showing a man receiving a pounding by another man outside a bar. The man being beaten is not fighting back. As a fist swings to make contact with the face, the scene freezes and the narrator speaks.

“The man being beaten is me. The one doing the beating is a poor fool who claims to be a “Christian.” A little alcohol and a stranger hitting on his girl put him in a rage. Oh I knew they were dating when I talked to the girl, but he did not know this. Don’t get me wrong…he is normally a “good” Christian, but he and some of his friends decided to celebrate some occasion. While they hit the billiards, I approached the girl, bought her a drink, and flirted with her. She was uncomfortable at first, but I have this aura about me that increases temptation.

“The other guy, a little buzzed, came and saw me. He made it obvious that was his girl and I apologized and walked away. However…he was already peeved at me. Instead of calming down or praying for it, he allowed his anger to rise…with a little help of course…. He could have stopped it at any time by prayer. I am just a catalyst that lowered the activation energy to his anger. He has the choice to let it proceed. So when I leave, he follows me. Perfect. Not only does he tell me he’s not done, he teaches me a “lesson” and punches me in the gut and then goes for the face. Excellent! Anger! When one is angry at another and lashes out at them, it is the same as murdering them in their mind.”

The scene unfreezes and the narrator is smacked in the jaw. He stumbles away. The angry man chases him and shoves. The narrator stumbles onto the street from in between cars. The man comes for one final kick in the butt. A bus hits them both. The bus stops and screams are heard and the people shriek of how that man came out of nowhere. Only one body is seen flung in the distance.

A dark figure sits on a flag pole, eyes full of glee. The scrambling people cannot see him. Even the grim reaper who appears invisible to all else cannot see him. He speaks and it is the voice of the narrator. “And with that, his soul is mine. He did not have to follow me but he did with murderous intent in his heart! Did he ever have that cloak of righteousness or was he mine all along? Hello O’ soul reaper O’ death! Another one ready to go down below!”

Memoir of a Fallen Angel: The Wallet.
On the ground lay a small piece of ebony hide. Such a common looking black wallet that beckoned to those who passed by. "Pick me up. Take me. I have wealth hidden away," it said, but people continued to walk by having not seen it.

Along came a boy of nondescript save for a little dirt on his face. With his head aimed downwards, he saw the prize on the ground and gave into its wish. Lifting it up to his face, he opened to view its contents; a large sum of money and an identification card was all that was in it. The address wasn't far from where the wallet lie. The owner must have dropped it while walking by.

Without a second thought the boy changed his direction and went to the owner's location. He approached the doorway to the sound of a bark on the other side and chimed. Within moments the door opened and a man of some height looked down at his visitor. For a moment the boy thought he saw a hostile look in his eye, but it was so short he thought he imagined it for the face was friendly when he asked, "may I help you?"

"Is this Duran Lockhart's residence," the boy asked laughing a little from the head butts he received from the dog that ran past the man who had greeted he.

"I am he," replied the man knowing more or less what the boy was to say next.

"I found your wallet sir and I came to return it," said the boy with earnest. He removed the wallet from his pocket and held it up to the man.

The man took the wallet with a smile, without checking it for he knew it was all there, and bid the boy to please come in. "It is cold outside, please allow me to give you a warm drink before you go for your trouble."

The trap hadn't worked, the boy had resisted. He knew the boy did not have much so he wanted to continue with the tempting. Inside he had nice things on display ripe for the taking. The boy ignored these on the way to the kitchen. This soured the man's mood, but it showed not on his face as he indicated for the boy to sit at the bar stool. He put some milk on a hot plate and put in a stirrer that kept it moving while he occupied himself with other things while the boy sat down.

He cut and he stacked and when he was done placed a plate of sandwiches down. The boy felt his stomach rumble at the sight. Then when the milk was ready, he put some chocolate in it too and poured a cup which he handed the boy. He leaned on the counter with a lofty demeanor and gestured at the plate of finger foods. He himself took a cucumber sandwich and took a languid bite.

The boy first started off slow, but soon devoured the food as any growing boys do. Half the plate was gone by the time Duran reached for his second half. Suddenly the boy spoke, "where is the restroom?"

Duran pointed and said, "down that way and into the room at the end. It is attached to that bedroom." There was another bathroom of course, but he sent the boy through the house to give another opportunity to steal from him. The boy gone and came back after doing his business. The dirt was now gone. He soon finished his sandwiches and drink and said, "thanks for the food but I have to go."

Duran walked him to the door, taking out his wallet, and handed the boy a large bill. "Oh I couldn't take that mister!"

"You can and you will. You deserve some of it for returning it to someone who may have needed it." He waved the boy away before shutting the door. Then he looked at the dog, and said, "that was truly one of His," and scratched her behind the ear. The boy resisted the trap of his influence and hadn't faltered. Though unhappy he didn't mind losing to someone who displayed that they truly deserved the reward at the end. For it wasn't creation he despised.

He headed to the couch and tossed his wallet into the air. A quick flash of midnight wings, the wallet fell between, and vanished before it touched the ground. To the streets once again it could be found. Should that boy walk by, it would be invisible to his eye. To the couch he sat and cupped the dog's face in his hands, and brought his forehead down to hers. “You continue to be a good girl too Marcha,” he said for he wanted her to someday say goodbye to him for eternity.

In His Early Years:

Many centuries ago… Red timid eyes peeked through a window of the villa at the young man asleep on the lightly padded wooden bed. He was still in his teens and hadn’t finished developing; still possessing some baby fat with the slight muscle tone. The eyes watched the rise and fall of the chest of the body with clean short curly blonde hair. It was a warm night out so the window was open. The palm of a pale hand with sharp nails moved towards the open window. It stopped suddenly and pulled back with a jolt before resting on the sill. A sigh of longing came from outside.

“Lucia,” said a voice behind the figure with the red eyes. With the sound of a clink of coins the eyes turned to meet another pair of red eyes belonging to a being with darker skin. The owner of the original pair of eyes had a dirty tangled matt of curly light blonde hair as well, but longer than the one in the house, that hugged about the face. A long pleated dress covered the body of this young individual. The stola was partially covered by a decorative palla that was fastened with a brooch which the only thing was holding it on the body both of which was kept about as well as the hair of the individual. “I can still do it.”

Lucia’s eyes went wide. “N-no,” the voice stammered. “You promised you wouldn’t.”

“Indeed I did,” said Nefretiri with the smile of a devil. “And I’ll continue to do as I said, but I would if you asked.”

Lucia slowly turned to look at the near mirror image through the window again. While dirty, unkempt, and fairer than he who slept inside, the two looked very similar. The difference in physique was due to their upbringing. The one on the bed obviously did more lifting or physical activities than the one looking in. “No, not you.” Lucia continued to stare longing to be next to them and vaguely wondering what the blood would taste like.

Nefretiri moved in closer and put her arms around Lucia’s waist. Lucia stiffened afraid of what the other would do or touch. The words, “you can do it,” were whispered in the ear. Lucia was silent for several minutes staring at the breathing figure. How handsome he looked to Lucia, more so than they remembered. Did those curls feel the same or did this new form change how even the hair felt between species? They wanted nothing more to sneak into that bed, cuddle next to their brother, burry their face into his neck, and…. “I can’t get in,” Lucia whispered.

Nefretiri pulled away from Lucia and said, “I can enter and bring him to you.”

Nefretiri moved to enter through the window, but Lucia sprang forward and grabbed Nefretiri’s wrist. “No!” Lucia quickly released her and shrank back several steps, a look of shock at what they did, that they even touched her, initially before looking timid again. “…. No… I won’t do it either.”

He’s fast for an infant, Nefretiri thought. If he was already this fast he might become powerful. Pity I promised not to take the other one if he behaved. It would be interesting to see if identical twins turned out the same. Vaguely she thought on doing it anyways, but quickly decided against it. She was a lot of things, but she didn’t want to be a liar as well. She’d have to convince him to do it or to let her do it. “His blood should taste like yours. You could know what it tasted like to me.”

Lucia shook his head vigorously and look past her through the window. Lucian had shifted in his sleep. Nefretiri looked back at the window as well and when she turned around Lucia was gone. Lucian rose from the bed and stared out the window, both figures having left. He thought he had heard Lucia, but of course it was a dream. Lucia was dead. His sibling had recently perished, coins given to cross the Styx, and was not coming back.

Miles away Lucia stumbled as Nefretiri leapt and tackled him to the ground and penned him with her body. It would have been easy enough for her to command him to stop, but she wanted him to struggle. Struggle he did, but it was obvious he knew not how to truly fight back beyond potentially some self-defense techniques. Not that knowing any would have helped him. She quickly had both his wrists above his head in one hand. He soon stopped squirming, admitting defeat, and relaxed under her while staring fearful, waiting to see what she did next. “You can only get away when I let you.” Lucia nodded once.

She released his wrists and leaned her head towards his neck. He automatically looked away to expose it to her in a submissive way with an abashed look. “If you wait too long he will age and you will no longer look like twins.” Lucia looked even more saddened. She breathed on his neck and kissed it. His eyes closed and he squirmed some. “Pity you will never have your long pretty hair again. You used to care more about your looks and put effort into it. You enjoyed bathing and being clean. You’re still lovely and will look it; we just need to clean you up.” Next he knew he was being pulled to his feet by the wrists was lead to the nearest river where she would bathe him.

---------

20 years later the same timid eyes peeped through the master bedroom, this time the figure wore a toga instead of a stola. The man in the bed appeared like he could have been the father of the one peering in. In a flash Lucia had moved from the window to stand next to the bed. Years ago he had been invited in by Lucian who remembered the incident as some sort of drunken hallucination or mad dream. Lucian had married and a family of his own by now, his old room currently vacant while Lucia’s housed children. Their father had died recently, having lived till a good old age, and Lucian was now in charge.

He stirred and lulled the wife to sleep in the chair. She wouldn’t be wise onto what happened come dawn. Lucia silently slipped into bed next to and faced his brother should he stir. Nefretiri had warned him that they were to leave the area soon, with a hint that now was his last chance in her voice. Lucia’s lip pouted slightly as he thought on this as it weighed heavily on his mind. If he didn’t do it, he’d have to say goodbye for a very long time, possibly forever, but if he did Lucian would be tormented by Nefretiri too. He wanted to be with him so badly, but if he did wouldn’t that be selfish? Though, when he admitted it, his feelings were detached from feeling regret from being selfish by doing it. She had told him how to do it in one night instead of having it dragged out over several like how he was turned. He stared at Lucian’s form rise and fall as he breathed, his gaze falling to the throat. He had been lonely without him, despite the unwanted attention he received, and figured it would be misery once he couldn’t at least see him. What held him at bay was that he didn’t want Lucian to have to deal with something about Nefretiri that kept him almost always afraid, her whims, the things she did to torment him. Also what if he messed up? He wasn’t very good at stopping once he started.

He put his arm on Lucian to snuggle in closer. Lucian’s eyes opened and immediately caught his. They closed slowly as he was put into a deeper sleep. He ran his hand across his cheek, down his throat, and arm while he stared at the pulse he saw near the surface of the arm and throat. He propped himself up to kiss the cheek, inhaling his scent, his face slowly following the path his hand took only to stop at the throat. The warmth that radiated from his skin felt wondrously good. As he inhaled at the throat he felt his own throat tighten and burn slightly. He was fascinated at the goosebumps that formed on the skin when he exhaled his cool breath as he leaned closer lips brushing against the skin, now watching the hairs rise.

He pulled his head back suddenly though it hurt to do so. He was determined not to do it, though he could taste it beneath that skin. He looked for a healing wound and when he found a scratch he reopened it by licking it with a small rough patch on the side of his tongue. He licked the small amount of blood it gave till he could think straighter and be slightly less intoxicated and tempted by food. He continued to lay there till he had to leave before dwn.

------------

A year or two or three later… Lucia ran back to the villa over the course of several nights; running several miles, resting, and running gain. He could hardly stand the time he had been away and didn’t want to be without what he desired most. He did it; he worked at better control of himself and stopped in time to do it. The connection to this stranger felt good, but it wasn’t quite right feeling or complete. He could understand how Nefretiri felt towards him, but he wished she didn’t give him the type of attention she gave him that left him feeling abused in some way. He could do it. Gods he hoped it wasn’t too late. Lucian was healthy last he saw him so there was still a chance. However upon arriving home and searching, it became apparent Lucian was gone. Lucia backed away from the house and collapsed in the shadows weeping, hands clasping the coins he had to his chest. Why had he not done it sooner when he had the chance? He wouldn’t do that again; let someone he felt attached to get away. Nefretiri suddenly appeared and he gave her a dismayed look of what horrid thing do you plan to do to make it worse. She said noting and merely gathered him and flew off with him. Even she didn’t feel like being cruel enough to be snide towards him at the moment.

Impact of Dieamos Incident on Ma
My muses for this include my Chinese History class which had inspired me to even want this role-play in the beginning, character sheets by Precia-T, Vampire Empire, Victorian Gothic Horror Novels, and Anne Rice. The character sheets by Precia-T, starting with Veni, are the main inspiration for this rewrite. Seeing the one of Ma thrust him forward in my conscious once again. Veni had already been there, and had been there a while I might add, and the two have been sharing the limelight in my head. Ma at least apologizes for bothering me so much as of late and actually costing me sleep some nights, but I know he’s hardly sorry. At least he’s polite about it, while Veni grins at me with his Cheshire grin and laughs at me not sorry at all. In fact the little devil purrs. Though, BlackMN has been trying to push her way forward again as of late. It’s been a while since my main persona has been up front or near it.

Vampire Empire by Kristen Lawrence helped propel it and other tunes by her, but mostly that one. Of course I started this before I first heard her songs, but the song was the main thing I played while writing the ending. Getting through several Anne Rice novels then pushed me to continue after taking a nearly 9 month leave. Don’t get me wrong… Veni still bugged me to continue sometimes and so did Ma, but it was mostly Veni.
The use of the word Other: You’ll notice that I will often spell Other with a capital. This is on purpose. Historically, Chinese people had the image of its borders continuously breached by "uncivilized tribes" given to mayhem and destruction, and they considered these people the four barbarians. In the 16th century, when European sailors appeared in southern China, they were also similarly regarded as barbarians and given derogatory names. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gweilo) In my Chinese History class the outsider was considered an “other” and not to be trusted. This Other is meant for the outsider, foreign devil, the non-family member, people involved with Ma’s family (especially ones that he perceives as being more powerful than he) that he isn’t sure about and don’t really trust. In Ma’s time they were afraid of change and taint of their culture so they weren’t even typically allowed to learn or have Others learn each other’s languages. However Ma isn’t that extreme with it, but he still retains a slight general notion of the Other. While he thinks it is a remnant of his views as human, the majority of it is instinct that usually flares up around unfamiliar vampires, non-familial ones that are quite a bit more powerful than he (thus he has mixed feelings about Cian, but not so much towards Daphne for example. He doesn't hate Cian or dislike him, but is wary of him), and other creatures he semi-regularly associates with that are potential threats to him or he sees as being too involved with the family as a whole (ex. Jacob, BlackMN somewhat but it has died down a bit with her, and even Galantros (he actually chalks it up with GL as old superstitions since ties with him is what allowed his current living situation)).

Part 1: Do I really love you?

This is a scenario that is supposed to happen sometime after Ma Jianshen struck Dieamos and lost control. I had wanted to experiment/demonstrate some of his powers in that roleplay for he exists usually in the background and his development had usually been in my head. From Rosemary’s knowledge of what everyone could do, she thought the best option would be to see if Ma could affect something that big and Ma had wanted to know as well because he doesn’t always try out his own theories since it involves a form of torment. When that had happened and I had basically let GL go ahead with his idea of having it have some negative effect on the beast beyond what it is supposed to do, which at the time I had no idea what it was, I enjoyed what he did to my character. At the same time I realized that such a thing had a profound consequence to him and wanted to explore them. So GL and I started a little scenario to explore just that since I could not wait to get to it/keep it in my mind so long, which just so happens to be the last RP we did together while we worked on Burning Lust. Plus I had a burning desire to explore Ma’s character more as this happened around the time I took that Chinese History class that just so happened to have covered all the years Ma has been alive. I was rereading it recently and felt like I wanted to rewrite it in story format based on the posts for I thought that I really wanted a certain someone to read this. The point of the whole scenario was for what I mentioned and for Jacob to establish a relationship with one of his lover’s children…and as Ma was becoming one of the more developed ones in my head I had desired just that. I hope to do this with some of my other favorite scenarios (not the whole roleplay, but some of my favorite scenes from within) like the one where Rosemary was in Jiluzix’s hands or the one where Cian and Veni were working together fairly well soon after meeting and establishing any form of relationship and then maybe skip ahead to how that alpha predator didn’t do what one normally would to another injured one (of course if you ever let me do this one I’d let you read it over and put in your two cents or edit the document… you do know how to do that so that others can see your changes right? Under Review tab and then click on Track Changes… you can also put in New Comment blocks to things you’ve highlighted).

This first part deals with a scenario involving Veni and Jacob which ends in Veni suggesting to Jacob that he gets to know his children a little better especially Ma Jianshen who is less frequently around than several of the others. This happens on the first and part of the second page of Making It As We Go. Anyways end of preface.

A humanoid form crumbled as Jacob had Veni unsummon a dirt golem. A thud in the distance was heard. Rosemary was arm wrestling with Muerte elsewhere. The occasional thud sounded as a hand was slammed into the ground; usually Rosemary’s. Jacob voiced a desire for Veni to move from practicing golem making from soft earth to rock. Veni looked at Jacob with uncertainty in his face. Ever since he drank some of Jacob’s blood he could see spirits. He didn’t know if it was because Jacob was a necromancer or if it had awakened some innate talent. Rosemary certainly didn’t gain such a skill so he supposed it was innate. “Jacob, I appreciate you teaching me this but I can’t help but wonder why you want me to learn golem creation? I can’t put spirits into it like you as I only see them and don’t really feel a connection to them like with you. Did you choose earth golem because I already have a strong connection to earth being dead and all? Do I?” He asked this last like he wasn’t sure. He never took magic learning beyond the few tricks he knew seriously. Besides what he knew, Rosemary could do as well. Albeit weaker though, but he originally thought it was an age difference and not due to him having some talent. Earth made perfect sense as the substance to start off with when learning golem creation when he thought about it.

Jacob nodded slightly as he led him to a nearby cliff. Jacob’s hidden realm was beautiful; it was both magical and natural with a large open field, many mountainous cliffs, and pleasant weather most days. “Partially yes, though I think some of it is also innate to just you as well as being connected more to earth and ground due to unlife. Not all mages that learned to hold conference and have connections with spirits did so immediately, or even for a short while until some spent a period of practice and study. Even without the souls housed in a golem, having another form of versatile attack and defense can be useful. You'll soon be able to radically shift their forms and shapes I believe before too long, if that shape of Rosemary is indication, one made of stone; try to imagine how that could be useful.”

The dirt creation Veni unsummoned had been the spitting image of Rosemary; a lovely statue of her made of dirt. Veni raised an eyebrow as if to ask how soulless golems could be useful to him when he knew Jacob always insisted on putting a soul into his creations so he wouldn’t have to constantly focus on controlling it. Jacob continued to answer his unspoken question. “One covered in sharp, edged spines to attack something you normally can't get close to yourself or even using tendrils with clubbed ends. I've never done anything extremely as drastic, perhaps because I've always focused more on the dead and undead side of organics. They can also be used to soak up more damage with not as a heavy cost of energy as it would be if you were to take that hit yourself.”

Jacob paused and smiled for a moment, a glimmer of pride in his eyes as Veni was picturing himself in stone armor. His shadow had also become more powerful as of late after he started practicing with some shadow dancers in Limbo and it could defend him better than it used to. It also seemed to have become more impish than it used to be unless it was all in his head because he paid attention to it more now. Jacob continued, unable to read Veni’s surface thoughts like he could Rosemary’s, “maybe you'll even surpass me in crafting these golems of earth materials. I think the raw talent is there. I've heard of magic users skilled enough to put metal into their craft for even sturdier and deadlier constructs. For now though, we try stone. You may or may not have some difficulty. You'll be able to feel the increase of toughness in the material in an ethereal manner, as if feeling it with your mind or some other extra sense. It's not too different as if you were chiseling a little, or breaking apart and cobbling together the stone; just easier than in a physical manner, but more mentally taxing.”

Veni was only half listening once they reached the rocky cliff side. He placed his hands on the stone surface of the cliff side. It was cool to the touch as this was on the shaded side. He could see the tiny heart beats of worms in the spots of dirt between the stone. He was using an extra sense to look at the rock like Jacob had said, but not the right one. “There aren’t many worms near this spot,” he declared. He stepped closer so the side of his face and body were against it. He closed his eyes and concentrated on feeling the stone with his energy and mind; to move the particles as if he was molding clay. “Thank you for the compliments and flattery. I like the idea of using it as some form of artistic talent over a battle tool. That said her proportions weren’t perfect. Does magical potential increase with practice or does it stay about the same? I would prefer to be able to get back up after being shot with a M.E.R.S. gun still, unlike you.” The gun in question was a Magic Energy Removal System gun. It did what its name implied. Veni was considerably weakened when shot by one of these, but he still could stand on his own. Jacob on the other hand needed someone to support him in order to stand when shot by one of these. The gun itself wasn’t lethal unless it was shot at a creature made of pure magic.

“That... is a slightly tricky question. Usually the potential is there, just not fully realized. Practice just brings it out better. There always could be some cases where practice and study, if dedicated enough, could increase that potential though, I'm sure. As for the M.E.R.S. Gun, I get the feeling it's not 100% fool proof, though it is fairly devastating to plenty of magic users. I'm willing to wager that there is a defense spell or some sort of counter to it out there somewhere. Almost nothing is entirely guaranteed to be completely perfect and effective in every situation, especially in magic I think.” Jacob smiled at his last sentence. He knew he better not let Rosemary know he said that. The M.E.R.S. gun was her favorite new toy that she picked up while they helped one of their close friends solve a serious issue that dealt with his own sanity. Plus she was also afraid of that possibility and of it happening at the worst of moments. To voice it could literally land his head on a silver platter and he knew she’d possibly do it too since it wouldn’t have a lasting effect on him due to having dealt with far worse. It would damage his pride a little though, but even that wouldn’t last long.

“I see,” said Veni, though he couldn’t see how a defense spell could exist on something that was meant to nullify magic. “Now let’s try for a spike.” He could sense the spike forming in the cliff. In the last instant of forming that spike a glimmer of an idea formed in his mind to impale himself with the spike as a form of joke. He felt it push through his gut like a knife below his chest and made a surprised sound. He hadn’t even fully decided to do it; it was a thought, a mere passing fancy, but it had interrupted his original spell all the same.

“Veni?!” Jacob’s hand reached out to Venis shoulder and gripped it tightly as he quickly sent out necrotic energy to transmute and reinforce the vampire’s ribcage to protect his heart. He made it so sturdy in his panic that it wouldn’t flex any to allow for the intake of much air. “Holy…Veni, are you alright!?” Jacob placed his other hand on the stone spike and unsummoned the thing which caused it to crumble in Veni’s stomach.

Veni gave Jacob a sheepish smile with his hand on the rocky wall for support as bits of bloody rock slowly fell to the ground. Since he couldn’t seem to breathe he projected his thoughts at Jacob. You treat me like such a pansy. It’s only a flesh wound. It would have been cleaner if you pulled me away instead of crumbling it in my gut. He looked at the ground, fascinated by the scent and sight of his own blood. He looked at his hand on the healing wound and wanted to lick it clean. Instead he wiped it off on a handkerchief from his pocket.

Veni’s answer left Jacob suspicious. “Was that an accident, or…?”

The vampire looked a little embarrassed at his question as he carefully cleaned the temptation from his hand. There’s a scant chance it was a bit of both. Jacob shook his head, a tad vexed by his answer. The idea materialized unwittingly at the last moment, although I hadn’t resolved to follow through with it. He took in as much air as he could with such a solid ribcage and said almost inaudibly, “I can’t breathe…”

Jacob resisted the urge to sigh. This one could be a tad too impish sometimes. He brushed his hand against Veni’s chest, returning his bone structure back to normal with a small bit of magical energy. As soon as he could, Veni took in a deep breath making a sort of gasping sound. His hand moved to the vampire’s shoulder soothingly. “I would prefer next time you decide to play a prank on me, it would be something that wouldn’t cause possible severe harm.” He wasn’t angry with him, but concerned.

Veni continued to inhale deeply as if he needed to, smile and nodded. He could feel the concern and love from the other. He turned back to the rock and worked at sensing it. It felt nice to him as he preferred to be underground during the day, but Jacob’s room was even better. He remodeled it with them in mind. The floor was a grassy substance, a real foreign grass, the bed was big, he had a nice bathroom attached with a large tub like Veni liked, places for them to keep some of their clothes, there were no windows just vents to allow air flow, and he put some illuminating crystals on the walls. He loved to rest and sometimes sleep on those grasses. He wouldn’t mind to be in there now. He practiced with the rock some, but quit while attempting to form a short bulky humanoid form frustrated at its difficulty.

He decided to voice something that came to his mind on occasion. He knew if he didn’t the necromancer would pick up on it eventually. “Jacob…you know I feel what kind of mood you’re in and when you’re happy or feeling something pleasurable I can feel it too like my own, just not your pains.” He was reminded of the first time they made love. Jacob decided to make Veni’s skin more sensitive on the crook of his neck, kissing and suckling at it. Veni had sank his teeth into the other’s flesh while he did that to increase their connection, to temporarily make them more like one, and to let him feel the pleasure he felt from what he had done. How that initial sensation had stunned the man, causing him to shake and intake air rapidly. Jacob had been surprised it felt that way and moaned. “When you argue with Rosemary your angers fuel the other’s anger. I didn’t hate you at first, but I can’t say I had feelings of much liking you either. Now I feel differently. Now I love your company and want to share my most treasured with you. I do not become jealous when you’re alone with her. But what if it’s influenced by your feelings and they aren’t merely my own? Would it bother you if I am merely reflecting them?”

Those words gave the ageless human immortal pause. They indeed bothered him. Veni could tell something was ticking in the man’s head as he started to frown a bit and took a seat on a nearby large rock. That thought had never crossed his mind apparently, but now it was a concern to him. What could be done though? He tried to think of what to say, but was silent for a while. Veni watched him still as stone, fearful of his reaction.

When he became their master, he had pretty much done it just to protect them from Jiluzix. He didn't want them to come under harm of the demon's corruptive, horrible touch. An idle, uncontrolled thought slipped by, so quickly, Jacob hadn't even fully realized he had thought it right away. One way you can find out if it's a reflection of your emotions, is if you finish undoing your curse, and see if you pass away. You'd no longer be their master then, and they'd be free. Veni would also then be able to see how he actually feels and... He quickly squelched that thought, noticing that his thoughts had caused the stone face to soften and look on the verge of tears. The vampire didn’t want his beloved to die like that. One retaliation to Jacob's death would be that it would hurt them in several ways. Veni would be sure to kill him first if he could, if he thought he was dying, and make him completely his. A mood slipped over Jacob now, as a bit of a tiny doubt had entered his mind, uncertain if somehow he was doing passive or unseen harm now or not. Searching for his usual hunch about things, he found it was staying neutral. Something told him this would be staying in the back of his mind for a little bit at least.

Taking a breath he finally spoke. “Honestly, and it’s unfortunate that this is true, I had never considered that. I care for you both quite deeply, but if your emotions are only a reflection…To be honest? Truthful? It would bother me; knowing that I've intruded in a way. Which I never meant to do... That's always the last thing I've wanted to do, was to bring discontent.”

The pale blonde statue reanimated, smiled sadly, and shook his head slightly. “You're merely worried about being an intrusion? You were, but now you're not. You’re a welcome intrusion. I highly doubt it's a reflection in Rosemary's case. She's a stubborn one, able to ignore my advances for long periods of time when I do something stupid. Indeed she loves you too."

Veni put his hands on Jacob's shoulders and smiled sweetly. He touched his forehead to the others and shook it from side to side . "If what I feel currently really is merely a reflection of your strong emotions, I don't mind at all. If that's the case, I'm sure I'll eventually gain my own strong feelings because I feel and have been happier than I've been in a while."

“It helps to know that I also contribute to you being happy.” Jacob relaxed some of the tension in himself, and allowed a few wisps of necromatic energy to play between his fingers on one of his hands, watching it idly to further remove a little bit of the slight anxiety and worry that had suddenly built up. It was akin to someone fumbling with their hands or fidgeting, but it was like a pressure relief.

Veni pulled back, grinning with a full set of sharp teeth, the twinkle of amusement back in his eyes. "You also don't know much about us Roman's either. The culture of my past is different than what exists now. Time for Roman 101, like my magic 101 lessen from you! To a Roman sex did not create any kind of bond between two people. It created no obligation between one side and the other. And, for the man at least, there appeared no reason why he should not share many sexual partners, - as long as it didn't get him into any form of trouble. There was no limits on age and also none on gender. However, socially it was still not acceptable to be seen to practice sex in excess. This was deemed a flaw in a Roman's character, making him disreputable. In fact I would be considered "effeminate" for openly showing affection and love towards my wife and you in public, which used to be a grave insult."

"Hmm, I didn't know the rules of my culture for a while... was pretty much ignorant of certain aspects of it for a while until I started going back into varied civilized parts of my world before the Niearcim invaded, under disguise. Otherwise, most villages would have exiled me the moment they recognized me as a mage that communicated with the dead. Or worse.”

"Actually I didn't know much of what I mentioned about Roman's either until after I became a vampire. I had an overprotective bizarre guardian of a father. I don't recall thinking that at the time of him..." Veni moved away and put his hands on the rock and focused on condensing it in spots so that it would cave under Jacob and become more chair like.

Jacob slumped into the neat chair seat, and relaxed a bit more. “I think things were more.... 'typical' and prudish so to speak, I suppose, when it came to matters of relationship. Same sexual relationships were definitely nowhere near the norm, nor were being involved in relationships with more than one love. I believe 90% of the time, they were outright banned. One interesting factor compared I think to some other past Earths was, aside from the usual parental consent needed to begin courtship, the woman being courted also could also refuse a suitor, even if it meant the family would gain in wealth or some other means. The parents couldn't force the woman to start a relationship, though they could forbid one. It wasn't illegal for the forbidden relationships like those in particular to start, just usually frowned upon as disrespectful.

"I think it made matters where royalty or other such political powers that would marry their youths off for land and other things much more interesting and difficult... trying at times even. I believe there was at least one war started because of one prince being repeatedly refused by the daughter of a king, even though the king wanted the arrangement to go on.

"Anyway, I think the reason for that condition never being outlawed or abolished for a woman to choose her suitor by her own free will, was possibly because of a religious aspect, being the one that would bear children and raise them up, she would be doing quite a bit of work. So it seemed right that she would get to choose, rather than have chosen for her."

The vampire sat on the other’s lap and rested his head against his chest. He gently scratched the back of Veni's neck and generally cuddled with him a bit. "I almost feel guilty to admit to you that I had enjoyed that "pagan" Roman practice for a few of years until Christianity ruined that view point for over a thousand years when it pretty much took over making it more difficult to find willing lovers I actually wanted. Do I feel guilty for doing it? No, not at all. I wasn't in love with anyone and I didn't force anyone either. I'm sure you already knew or suspected that, but does knowing that I used to do that bother you? But what I do feel guilty on is having multiple sexual partners before getting married while you and Rosemary haven't fooled around in your lives. Not that I would want you to do that now. Makes me feel unclean in comparison sometimes. It didn't help that I am stuck in a teenage body and came to like the attention."

Jacob thought on what the other said, but didn’t pause long enough to insult him. He realized he didn’t really care that the other had floated around before settling. What mattered to him was that he has settled. “No, I don't believe it does. Honestly, I'm sure I wouldn't want to fool around myself either." The beauty shifted in his position to straddle the other’s lap to hug and nuzzle his neck and purr happily at his answer. Jacob could sense the relief and joy that came from his response and realized he was afraid that he wouldn’t be accepting if he knew of that.

When he continued to speak, he pulled his face out of his lover’s neck to look in his eyes as he spoke. Jacob continued to stroke the hair on the back of his head and neck. "Traditionally Rosemary would have been paired by a matchmaker. She actually fainted during our wedding ceremony because most of the village was there and all the verbal and mental noise was a bit much for her. Believe it or not, but she was actually considered fragile. She was probably relieved to be 'kidnapped' by a group of the male guests for about an hour or so until her ransom was agreed on and paid. Hiding the fact that I don't eat was very hard as your hands should be kept visible while eating. I would bring it to my mouth and flick it away faster than the human eye should be able to see and pretend it ended up in there. " He gained a sort of glazed happy dreamy look in his eyes when he mentioned a little bit on the wedding.

"The way she acts around people is contrary to how Romanian's act traditionally, but this is likely due to her telepathy. The closer the relationship between people, the more touching goes on. Between friends, it is common for each to groom the other, fixing collars, removing lint, touching hair and putting arms around each other. Female friends link arms or hold hands when walking together in public and often touch. Male friends may also put arms around each other and touch a lot, especially when drinking.”

Veni started to purr, a deep low rumble from his throat, from the idle petting. Jacob thought some of the traditions were odd, yet interesting. He didn’t quite understand one of them and asked for clarification on it. "Kidnapping? Ransom? I get the feeling it wasn't a normal kidnapping by the way you said it...”

“Yes, it wasn't the usual abduction. It's an unusual tradition. Usually some males announce before a wedding to a godmother or the groom's parents that they're going to kidnap her and arrange the ransom so it is ready. The ransom for the bride is usually spirits. The bride is kidnapped during the wedding when the groom isn't looking or is occupied. A shoe or some item is taken from her as proof that they got her and is presented. Then a ransom agreement is made after a little while and she is returned and her kidnappers get their demands if one was so prepared for it. I think they tried to play it on me as a joke since I wasn't familiar with the tradition. I knew something was up, but Rosemary wasn't alarmed by their actions so I let it be and pretended I didn't notice her slip away."

"Huh, that's an interesting and different custom... to me at least. I can't think of any that would really stand out from my culture."

Veni stopped purring. He wondered if Jacob was still thinking about what he said earlier. If he was that would explain his lack of curiosity on the wedding. After all he was hoping for another soon. "If what I said earlier is bothering you that much you could seek the opinion of an onlooker and see what they think. Besides you could do well in getting on better terms with my children. You don’t see Ma Jianshen too often and I would like you to love him too. I think his opinion of you may have changed slightly from that coin gift."

"No, no it's not bothering me nearly as much Veni. I'm sorry. I guess I got a little caught up in thinking about my homeworld a little. It may not have treated me well most of the time, but there were still a few moments that weren't so bad." He gave Veni a gentle hug squeeze and was returned with an even louder purr and a regular kiss on the neck. "I suppose though, that I should try to get on better with Jianshen. You think that necrotic-energy charm really did change how he thought of me a bit?"

Idly, Jacob thought that if he were to visit the Asian vampire again, he'd best be prepared for a rough greeting just in case... Last time, he got a swift kick to the knee before Ma fully realized who it was. Immortal he may be, but that still damn well hurt.

"Well... actually... I can't be certain. What I can be certain of is he liked the gift. He often is very indirect when he speaks, saying one thing and meaning something completely different. There's often a deeper meaning to his words and sometimes what he means is quite opposite to what he says. For all I know, he could like you as a person but doesn't approve of you being indirectly his master or he could be very suspicious of you in general. Chinese of his time were very suspicious of Outsiders. We weren't to be trusted and were considered 'Others'.

"If you go visit him, you should bring him a gift. Avoid giving gifts of knives, scissors, or letter openers as they signify severing of a close bond. I know that he gave Rosemary blades for Christmas, but he knew that she'd like them and is more familiar with her. Clocks, cut flowers, and anything in groups of four are to be avoided as well. A gift should be wrapped. Red and gold or yellow are good colors as they are the colors of good fortune, joy, and luck. Even blue-green is good for him. Never give him anything wrapped in white or silver until you’re more familiar with him that is. He'll probably refuse a gift several times before accepting it and he won't open it, unless prompted to do so, until after you leave. Give him the gift with both hands, like he did for Christmas. You also probably shouldn't tell him why you're visiting until he asks as the Chinese prefer a little small talk before getting down to business. Periods of silence are considered acceptable. Also, using your feet to move something is considered extremely rude."

Jacob looked like he was taking it all in and trying to make mental note of it. It was becoming more difficult to concentrate on that once the vampire stopped speaking for he was doing little things to distract him. He had started to kiss at his neck, caress the opposite cheek with his hand, and gently rub his fingers in spots with his other hand that he knew Jacob liked from his experience with him. The man lost his train of thought as the beauty worked at seducing him. The beauty himself was seduced by the scent of the other and of his own blood on the ground and dried on his shirt. “I’m insulting you gravely,” he whispered in Jacob’s ear referring to his earlier comment about how being publicly affectionate to someone was an insult to him. The necromancer laughed as Veni pressed his body against his to pin him a little and sank his teeth into his throat. As much as he enjoyed having the perfect victim he couldn't kill no matter how much he took, a part of him still longed to make him his child.

Part 2: The home of a master
This starts on page 2 of Making It As We Go and ends after the first post on page 3. Jacob arrives and Ma serves them tea. This part ends with Ma asking Jacob the purpose of his visit.

The next day Jacob headed to Jianshen’s. Though he could have teleported rather close to the location, he chose to ride a transport. He fidgeted some and for some reason made sure he still held the gift in his hands. The wrapping paper made up of a color of red with gold bordering shone with the passing lights. It was a small set of specialty organic blood bags in a less utilitarian basic shape and more pleasing aesthetically. Or so he hoped as it was not so much a basic sac of blood and flesh. The blood they were imbued with was special as well, being of particular mixes of tastes. He was anxious, nervous. He wanted the visit to go well. He desired some form of approval from Veni’s son. Veni didn’t come because he said Jianshen might not be as frank with him if both were there. Getting out of the transport he used to arrive at Jianshen’s place, he adjusted his shirt and started moving towards the door.

Meanwhile that night after his normal lessons, Jianshen and Githar were having a friendly spar in front of a small audience. The students who wanted to stay and could were allowed to stay and watch. A kick was blocked at the lower shin level attempted by Githar, followed up by several more blows. Both were of course careful not to actually hurt each other. Githar, being a heavyweight in comparison to the vampire, had the advantage of reach and Ma found it difficult to get in close to strike. He possibly could, but he was trying to match Githar in speed and strength and not use what he was over what he knew to his advantage.

Githar of course made use of what was natural to him, since it was part of his style, using swiftly made shields of energy from his arms to deflect blows, along with his forearms and hands. Ma had his braid tied low and tucked tightly away in his shirt to make it more difficult to grab because grabbing it was part of Githar’s style too as he had learned the hard way. Proper fighting etiquette was different here than he was used to and he still found himself learning to adapt. He also found himself frustrated he didn’t ask Githar if it was acceptable to use what was natural to him too. It was too late to ask now and he didn’t take Githar’s usage as cue for it being acceptable for him to use it because what was natural to him could hurt the other. Nor did he want to glamor him with his gaze because he found that cheating for these sort of practice matches. Instead he decided to start moving a little faster.

He did wonder if he should fight with everything as if he was defending his life like humans did in real matches. It was harder for him to judge what he could and couldn’t do for this. Trying this as a human was out of the question because his human body couldn’t handle the activity especially against someone like Githar. He tried it in private thanks to a disguise rune the realm offered. It was awkward to say the least going from his monster’s body to a frail one even for a human near his 50s. Once he got used to feeling his own movements and started practicing, he just could not do it long before it seized up and put him in a lot of pain. He might last a quick match. He would have to figure out some other style or techniques for that body to handle if he was to do it seriously. He’d only really want to do such a thing to prove that his talent wasn’t only because he was a vampire and just part of it at least like Rosemary’s sharp shooting was often scrutinized for. He was certain she could be one of the best as a human or as far as whatever eyesight she had would allow.

When next Githar came at him with a punch, Ma blocked it and kept his hand lightly touching as well as following that arm. Githar immediately followed with a low kick, which the vampire gladly took the follow up blow to his face to block the kick. Unfazed by the head blow, he performed the move he had set up with his hand on the others leg and arm; he did a motion with his wrists faster than any there could see and sent the reaper spiraling to the ground as he threw him off balance. Jianshen was on him before he hit the matt, slamming his shoulder into the floor as he brought a blow down at the other’s face and stopped before it hit. He then offered the reaper his hand to help him up with a pleasant smile that lacked immodesty as he rubbed the spot the reaper hit with his other one. Githar grinned with his eyes as he accepted the hand up.

After bowing to each other, Ma Jianshen then turned to his students to address them and told them in Cantonese that was all, thanks for staying, and that he’d see them in a couple days. Githar himself got an energy drink and saw Jacob coming out of the corner of his eye through one of the windows. “You seem to have a visitor…”

Ma looked to where Githar had indicated with a look of amusement in his eyes. He and Githar were at least amicable towards each other with respect as martial artists. “I’ll be back unless he kills me.” The vampire turned, headed out with some of his students, and soon vanished from anyone’s view becoming the darkness. Githar watched with interest.

Jacob had several people pass by him as he approached. When he reached the doors and was about to enter them, he felt two fingers pressing a spot on his back. Jacob came to a halt in his movements finally sensing the vampire behind him. Ma felt very satisfied that he could hide his presence long enough to sneak up on or potentially get away from someone so attuned to the dead. Speaking in the language he knew Jacob could understand he said, “Strike here correctly and lose use of legs. Not permanent.”

“Hello, Ma Sifu. I was hoping you wouldn’t mind a visit…” All things considered, like any undead, Jacob could just easily manipulate the vampire's skeleton and put an end to his undead life for seemingly threatening him which is what Jianshen had meant by unless he kills me. However, Jacob didn't even consider or think that; probably a good thing, seeing as how it would upset his lovers. No, Jacob seemed to trust that Ma Jianshen wouldn't do any actual serious harm to him. Still though.... He'd have to be careful if he didn't want to ruin the vampire's gift while still holding it.

He acted before the vampire could pull his hand away willingly. Suddenly, Jianshen felt his fingers repulsed from that spot on Jacob's back. Necrotic energies, possibly with the help of spirits, actually shoved Jianshen back a bit as Jacob swiftly turned around to face him. The vampire stared at him with amazement; always surprised to see what a necromancer could do. The sensation felt odd, a pleasing energy sensation, yet used against him without any allowance to resist at the same time. He hated this last part. Jacob still held his gift in his hands, but his fingertips glowed with the essence of a necromancer's magical ability. He wouldn't be so easily caught unaware a second time in case Jianshen decided to continue. If not, he would disarm of course...

"Merak bìxià, you can't teach me that,” said Ma Jianshen basically meaning you cheater, I can't learn that move. He resisted the impulse to shudder at the invisible wall he suddenly felt between them that he couldn’t pass and instead rubbed his hand and shook it a little. "If I going to strike, I would striking thing already. Your hands are full so I didn't.” He eyed the present as he heard a pulse come from it, but quickly pretended to not notice it.

“Heh, very good point,” Jacob said relaxing and lowering the wall he didn’t seem to be aware he built between he and the vampire.

“I teach properly later. Come in." Ma held the door open for Jacob who greeted the reaper upon seeing him. The reaper seemed slightly amused at their interactions, his eyes in the shape of a chuckle and his cheeks rose as if in smile since he lacked any real mouth. Ma shut the doors and locked them. He prepared to close up so no one else would enter and said in his native language, “I hope you’re prepared to teach that to my pupils who will no doubt ask me how to do it next time I see them. Also is using the energy shield an open invitation for me to use my special ability a little without asking?” His special was causing pain to those he touched which he often wasn’t sure if he should use in friendly spars. He actually hoped he could. He wanted to see if he could affect another’s energies if he pictured himself grabbing it with his own.

"I'll be glad to help teach a bit of energy manipulation. As for your own special ability, I suppose fair would only be fair. If I could use my energy skills within reason, I don't see why you couldn't use your own as well." Githar responded back in Cantonese as well though he didn’t need to. Jianshen found the English language more difficult for him to speak than he did to understand it. He had gotten to the point of being able to almost speak it fluently and like any native. He just preferred to not sound that way.

Ma Jianshen then said, "come I'll make us some tea." He lead them to what was obviously his office space and got out a device and handed it to Jacob who accepted it and thanked him. It was a translator. The vampire spoke in his native language to his students. Those who were unable to automatically learn a language from listening to it, like most reapers, had a device that translated what he said. "Please put on translating thing." As Jacob placed it on his person, the foreign language became instantly recognizable to Merak the moment he activated the thing. Idly, he thought and hoped Veni's vampiric kin would enjoy the gift of blood food he got him. He was desperate to make a good impression on him.

Ma led them down some stairs into the basement of the building, pulling his hair free from his collar as they walked. The kitchen and living room was the same room. He lacked most conveniences that normal places would have, but had a small food cooling unit, almost no kitchen utensils, little counter space, sink, some food and water heating device, and what food he had for creatures other than himself was of the kind that would last a while without spoiling. He was fairly adamant in checking their expiration dates so none of it was expired. There was a fully functional bathroom in another room for a human like Jacob. He had a couple plants in his house with lights set on them including a shrub like one. Jacob idly wondered what kind of plants they were as he looked around. Jianshen had several book boxes, wood carving books, and regular books most of them in Chinese (hanzi).

There were a couple of nice pieces of note like a china cabinet of Limbo origin because the materials were sturdy and harder to break into. The display had a couple of Ming tea sets and some matching china with others from that period. Also in the room was a wooden platform called a frame bed of about 10 or so feet in length with railings on three sides, pillows on it, and a kang table in the center. The table was easy to remove. The platform and table had matching designs carved into the legs and the railings had a simple design, but the base was smooth wood with a pad designed to go around the table that was added for comfort for guests. The vampire invited his guests to sit on it around the table, but requested the removal of shoes.

Githar sat down automatically, but Jacob offered Jianshen his gift before sitting. As expected the oriental vampire said he didn’t have to give him anything. Jacob insisted politely that he accept the gift and Ma eventually accepted it with both hands. Jacob wondered if the vampire could sense the scent of blood from his gift, despite their casing inside the giftwrap. It may not have been 100% airtight, he wasn't sure. Ma knew very well what was in the box being able to hear it, but he wouldn’t know it was of special type until he opened it. He sat it on the table and walked off to heat some water in a kettle. While it heated he got out a ceramic teapot and other dishes. He picked some tender flushes from the bush and put it in a small bowl/saucer (I don't know what they be called), added some dry pieces, and put them into the teapot.

Jacob had been thinking since planning his visit to Jianshen that maybe it would be a good idea to better acquaint himself with not only the Chinese vampire, but other children of Rosemary and Veni as well as those that were their kin. Building a good relationship with them all would be more beneficial to everyone, he thought, and build trust. Perhaps next he could spend time with Dan and Daisy a little more often. It made him realize that, subconsciously, he probably still held onto small habits of isolating himself just a little bit, although not nearly as much as he used to before being with Rosemary and Veni. He mused that he would always be a work in progress. He turned to Githar as Ma gathered items onto a circular tray. "So, how often have you two been sparring with each other, out of curiosity?"

Githar scratched the side of his forehead in thought for a moment, his blue glowing eyes dimming ever so slightly as he concentrated to remember. "I would say roughly six or so months ago, wouldn't you agree Ma Jianshen? It was partially on the advice of my old martial arts master, Fliner, to seek out more sparring partners so I wouldn't become rustic in my practice, but I very much suspect it was so I wouldn't spend so much time concerning myself over my merchant and store business. Which I don't mind. Between my son, Rosemary, and Jianshen now, it gets me out of my shop more often and obsessing less. We've been able to teach each other a few things here and there too."

"Ah, I didn't note the date... I thought it was longer. Though I am curious about this master of yours..." He also got out sugar cubes, creamer in those little cup packets and maybe things to put into tea like honey as he wasn't sure what Jacob liked in it, haw flakes, and some wrapped pastries and put them all on a circular tray.

"I think I can arrange a meeting with her tomorrow evening if you're free then," Githar offered.

"My evenings are typically busy. It is equivalent to the start of your day when you start work. I couldn't cancel a class on such short notice. My nights once I am done are mostly free, but many creatures are in bed by then." When the water was hot, he poured it on the leaves and brought the tray to the table and sat it down so that there was a cup in front of each of them instead of handing them out. He didn't feel like doing every proper step. Not that anyone there would know how to do a proper tea ceremony from his time anyways.

“Well, if it's closer to early morning, like around 4 or 5 in morning or later, she's usually awake by then. She doesn't mind visitors then either, she's very much a morning person."

“It’s a good thing I don’t mind staying up late,” he said with a light chuckle. Much time past 5AM was considered late depending on the time of the year for a vampire as the sun would soon be up. He took a seat next to Jacob, trapping him in. When he picked up the pot to serve the tea, he put his hand on the lid and poured tea to Githar and then Jacob. The tea smelled of jasmine; it was a green jasmine tea. As he was finishing pouring the necromancer's tea, Githar curiously asked Ma Jianshen what Jacob got him. Jacob also prompted him gently to open the gift so he would have something to drink as well then. He was certain Githar wouldn't be bothered by Jianshen feeding, as he'd been witness to Rosemary feeding off Galantros before, or other vampires feeding off "blood bags" as well. He hadn’t really flinched at the time or anything.

Jianshen set the pot down with the spout not pointing at anyone and left the cup in front of him empty save for the sugar cube he had put in it before bringing the tray over. He set the present in front of him and carefully undid the wrapping so as to barely rip it, looked at the gift and set it next to his cup. It looked slightly better than usual since it didn't have pulsating veins at the surface of the skin everywhere. It also smelt good. "Thank you for the gift. It seems a little different than what I'm used to."

Jacob was glad that Jianshen liked the gift as he took a small sip of his tea. " You're welcome for the gift, I hope you'll like it when you sample it."

A glint of red showed in his eyes as he picked up the teapot again and poured tea into the cup in front of him. It really did smell good, but he had already had plenty of blood before they arrived. He had a feeling tonight was going to really be uncomfortable for him and he wasn’t referring to what he was about to do. "I'm not sure if you knew since you didn't say anything or inquire about it when you looked at it. That is a tea plant. It can grow into a tree if I let it."

The necromancer looked at the plant again. “No, I didn't know that was a tea plant... what sort of tea plant is it?”

Once done pouring he put the teapot down and held the cup in his hands, giving them the impression he was using the hot beverage to warm them which was partially true. "As for what kind of plant it is, its scientific name is camellia sinensis. But what kind of tea plant? Many types of teas are made from it such as white tea, yellow tea, green tea, oolong, pu-erh tea, black tea, and many other teas around the world. How they're processed, climate, and soil types brings out different flavors. What I made is closer to an herbal green tea because green tea maintains almost all of the original leaf properties."

Jacob looked back at the tea plant with curiosity for a moment. He'd seen other tea plants, one or two, that were native more to Limbo or other realms, but never an "earth" type one. A variety of teas made, several that he liked, all from the same plant. "That's really interesting. I've seen maybe one or two tea plants in total, and they usually only make one or two types of tea."

"That kind is typically from a variety of earth planets," said Githar knowing this through his trading of goods from various realms.

While Jacob and Githar made their comments, Ma brought the cup in his hand to his lips and drank. It was like eating unprepared stinging nettle going down, but his face didn't show it. As the martial artist vampire took a sip of his own tea, Githar gave him a brief, curious look. If consuming regular things such as tea harmed him so, why do it? Tradition, customs? He could sense the extreme discomfort with his natural empathy sense that was innate to his kind. "Aren't you.."

"I thought you couldn't consume food and drink, Ma Sifu... Isn't that uncomfortable?" Jacob was as equally amazed as Githar that he actually drank the tea.

"Precisely what I was going to ask," said Githar.

The vampire finished his cup before he answered. "Indeed my body isn't designed for food at all or drink like this, however this one cup is nothing worth complaining about," he said which could mean just that or that he's felt a lot worse so he shouldn't complain about it or that this amount isn't as bad as larger amounts.

Githar finished his tea, sensing that the vampire felt ill from drinking the tea, and nodded a little towards Jianshen's gift as he sipped the last few drips quietly. "I'm not certain, but if it's due to not wanting to drink blood in front of company, I don't mind at all, and I'm certain Jacob doesn't mind either." Jacob nodded in agreement. It of course would make him feel better faster to mix it in his stomach. "If that's not the reason, then don't mind me. I just thought I'd throw that out there."

Oh tonight is really going to be uncomfortable, Ma Jianshen thought as he put his hand on his head and did a slicking of the hair back motion even though most of it was tightly braided. They must have missed that he said “us” and not “them” when he said he’d make the tea. It wasn’t that he thought they minded vampires drinking blood around them, but he was having a little more trouble than usual with his pain inducing ability when feeding and the blood bags had been writhing more than usual. The things weren’t meant to feel pain, but he was somehow causing them to. He already knew present company didn't mind him biting into those in theory, but did they really want to see that? He silently poured more tea for Githar and set it down so the spout wasn't pointed at anyone. He decided to try to change the subject. He could only take so much of their insistence that he try the more appealing ones before he could stand it no longer and do it especially after drinking the tea. "Is there any reason for your visit, Merak bìxià?"

Part 3: Pain, I can’t get enough

Part 3 is the main reason I even wanted to do this. All happens on page 3. It starts off with Jacob explaining what has been on his mind and why he is visiting. After receiving comfort from their words the topic goes into love. When asked if Ma has trouble with properly expressing love, he says that he isn’t sure and that it seems that it is different now than it used to. He admits at the end he’d rather have someone for dinner than as a girlfriend. Githar and Jacob offer to find him someone for that purpose as Jacob realized Veni and Rosemary seem overall better when feeding off of him over a blood bag. Githar suggests it might be alright for the vampire to feed from Jacob. Ma is horrified by the suggestion and demonstrates why it is a very bad idea….

With the translator in place Jacob finally realized what bìxià meant. The vampire had been saying ‘your majesty’ all this time and no one had told him. He shifted slightly and frowned at this realization. A certain blonde vampire would pay for this later. He wasn’t sure if the other one, Rosemary, knew what that word meant, but he sure knew Veni did. Who probably thought the whole thing funny. "Unless you insist, I'm not sure I'm comfortable with that title of bìxià."

Ma Jianshen smiled and started to chuckle hiding his mouth behind his hand. He soon calmed down a little and there was a lack of mirth in his voice when he continued, most likely due to Cantonese relying on tones over a variety of words and if he used the wrong tone, he could be saying a different word altogether. "Pardon me, it was rude. Did you finally figure out what bìxià meant due to that device?" He had been saying Merak bìxià to him for months now.

Jacob nodded a bit. "Yes, the device did help me figure that out finally. Honestly, I probably should have looked it up on my own though. If I only spent half as much time as I do in most other languages than I do in demonic and undead tongues and my various spells, I could probably do well in a career as a multi-translator.

"Anyways, I came for a couple of reasons... I did want to acquaint myself better with you, perhaps others also. Partly an effort not to close myself off to others like I have during the worse parts of my curse in the past, and also because I'm realizing I want to get to know people better." Jacob took another drink of tea. "As well, something came up, a sort of theory about some emotions regarding Veni and I. Some outsider opinions on the matter would be helpful... It came up that it may be that Veni could be reflecting my emotions for Rosemary and him when it came to how he feels about me. That may or may not be the case we thought, though it has me a little curious I do have to admit."

Githar mentally noted that while Jacob did seem slightly bothered by that notion of Veni's feelings only being a reflection, his empathy told him that it wasn't bothering him too severely, just that it seemed to be more of a nagging pest or annoyance in his mind. "Mind if I add in my two cents as well, having been around you all a few times and being a natural empath?"

"No, not at all. I think the more thoughts on the matter, the better."

"I'm not entirely sure what reflected feelings are supposed to.. well.. feel like empathetically, but from what I've sensed around you three seems pretty strong and natural to me. I'm sure Galantros would tell you the same if you asked him; he may be even able to tell better than me being part incubus. Interesting, speaking as an empath, you don't seem as troubled by this a great deal. Somewhat, I can sense, but it's as if you've been reassured somewhat already."

Jacob gave a slight smile and shrugged. "Even if they were reflections of my own emotions, Veni stated that he was sure his own would come into being if that were the case, and that he wasn't unhappy either."

The vampire was quiet as he pondered and actually found himself wishing Githar wasn’t there for a moment as he thought of a very personal question to ask Jacob. Did he think father would try to turn him into a vampire if he could? He wouldn’t have normally asked him such a question if the topic of Veni’s affections had not come up. Depending on how Jacob answered it, he would be able to figure out if Veni indeed loved him in some way at least. He would have to strive to remember to ask him that later. "What does it matter if his emotions are reflecting yours or not? He probably has some feelings for you, but they’re just intensified by your own. If they are your emotions masked as his, than he's letting it happen this time and not resisting it as he has done before.” Ma instantly regretted saying that as Githar raised an eyebrow, but continued without pause. “It really seems a trivial detail to me if you're both happy. At least you have what I assume to be a decent lover since I barely see him without you around anymore. I see Rosemary with you less. I'm actually surprised you came here without him.” What he actually meant was I'm surprised you got him to stop dangling off you long enough to get away from him.

Jacob listened carefully to what Ma Jianshen was saying as he finished the last of his tea. "You've got a very good point..." The necromancer relaxed even further a bit, setting his cup down and leaning against the pillows, more of his concerns put at rest.

The little detail of what was said didn't escape the necromancer, though Githar spoke of it out loud first. "Yes, though I noticed you said "...he's letting it happen this time..." I'm assuming something similar happened in the past that didn't go over as smoothly?"

Jacob just nodded in agreement to what Githar said... he had an inkling of what may have been thought of when Jianshen had said that, of Nefretiri, but he would let the vampire say what incident it was or was not, if he so choose. Jacob’s inkling was right of course as Ma had suspected Veni’s mother had unrequited feelings for him, but the vampire wasn’t sure as it was before his time. He was aware of some of his kids loving him like that, but once again Veni relented. The vampire did the same motion with his hand that he did earlier, running it through his hair, to indicate he wasn't comfortable with the question just asked and that he had said something he shouldn't have and was embarrassed by it now. Though another thing was also said, that Rosemary was seen with the necromancer less often? Perhaps he should take her out sometime soon. He didn't want either one of his loves to think he was taking them for granted.

Ma was quiet for a time before he spoke thinking carefully on what he could say on the matter. "You said it, but I am not sure how much I should say on it. Well other than that sister of mine,” he decided mentioning his grandmother was out of the question, “I at least suspect that some people with a connection to him like mine or Jacob's had feelings for him, but he never reflected it. With how certain time periods and various cultures viewed love, which often wasn't considered necessary to have for marriage, and the type of powers my family tends to have, many of us have difficulty grasping the concept of "love" and may confuse it with obsession or lustful fantasy or may even have love for someone but don't know how to express it correctly and end up with poor results.”

"Confusing it for obsession or lustful fantasy is what I'm fairly sure Galantros worries about himself, wouldn't you agree Jacob?" Githar inquired.

"Possibly, he doesn't seem to want to do that to anyone. I know for a while I probably had a semi-similar problem of not knowing how to express love I think, due to being shut off from everyone and everything for so many centuries... and some temporary, long-term loss of sanity. Do you have that same difficulty?"

"Possibly….” Ma wasn’t really sure anymore. Unlike Githar and Jacob he had no current romantic companion nor had he for many years. He thought he didn’t when he was alive so he spoke on that, but he wasn’t sure if he had that same difficulty now. “From a western perspective, yes. We see showing affection as a private matter. We don't hug, kiss, cuddle, or caress in public. Not even to children. I was married with a wife that was arranged by our parents that I grew to love over time, which was lucky and I believe the same happened to her. I recall being affectionate towards her when appropriate and she blessed me with healthy children. However as a vampire living mostly in the west, the hairy barbarian demons were mostly racist to a godless heathen like me. Being Chinese wasn't really a good thing to be in the centuries that I've lived until more recently as people have become more tolerant, so I haven't had many real girlfriends or love interests. I possibly would have trouble expressing love suitable for the times. Actually, most of the time I'd rather have someone for dinner, possibly multiple times, than as a girlfriend...and ever since my powers came to me I desire that more than ever since I deny myself that pleasure."

"If you want, I'm sure Minazi probably knows a few people from back before she broke up with her last boyfriend, he was also a vampire. She probably made some connections, so she might know some people willing to be fed off of, even despite you pain ability." Githar never seemed to have a problem knowing this about her past boyfriend. How and why that ended, it was never clear. Ma cocked his head towards Githar at this statement. Though Ma was intrigued, he wasn’t sure he liked that this conversation was going back to food though he opened it with his last comment. He had his doubts that such a person would easily be found.

Jacob nodded, wincing a bit as his curse took a slight effect on one part of his body, causing him some discomfort and pain. It was one of the less extremes, so he was able to ignore it, though he did place his hand over an area where a rib would be. The pain causer scooted closer to the edge of the platform away from the cursed man. He could sense it being so close. It was very tempting to reach over and make a minor nuisance to the necromancer worse or even to feel it and study it.

"Are you..." Githar started with concern not noticing Ma had moved. He was more concerned with Jacob’s pains.

"I'm fine, just the curse. Nothing unmanageable.” The cursed man waved his hand to brush away the trench coat clad reaper’s concern. “Anyway, I could probably help with that as well, if you don't mind a feeding partner being demonic. Some of them have high thresholds for pain, probably as good as me at least in some cases, heh."

What Jacob said had been too much for the vampire as small sudden surge of anger arose within him along with other conflicting emotions on their offer to help him find someone to feed on; his face miraculously retained its pleasant expression. He was ecstatic at the thought but also very angry. If it was that easy to get him a feeding partner, why hadn't anyone mentioned it before? He was sure he mentioned missing feeding on people or at least not doing it because it is painful before... Not to mention Rosemary, Veni, Dan, and Daisy have been blunt in stating that they like feeding off people more than the blood bags...had no one assumed he had the same problem since he did it all the time? He only hadn't pushed the matter because he didn't think anyone would let him do it and he really didn’t want to harm these people. It also wasn't proper to complain about a marvelous invention he should be grateful for.

Githar internally frowned a little at feeling Ma Jianshen's anger and other emotions... He couldn't blame him. If he guessed right, maybe subtle hints or something else had been dropped and they hadn't been paying attention that he would have needed or wanted a feeding partner. He politely kept his face normal and didn't comment or say anything about the emotions he felt, out of manners and respect for the vampire. It was partially reaper etiquette to not mention aloud another's minor negative feelings, especially if they weren't close to the other individual. He was acquainted with Jianshen, yes, but wasn't sure if he was considered a good enough friend or just someone likeable enough to spar with and such yet. He was though, but the vampire wouldn’t have wanted him to say anything in front of Jacob. The necromancer was oblivious to what the vampire momentarily felt as he wasn’t tuning into him. It was just as well. He didn’t need that worry on his mind.

Despite his initial anger, he was still very happy for the offer. The idea of even one feeding partner was like a dream come true, but the prospect of multiple... Ma didn’t pause more than a few seconds before he responded. "You don't know how deeply grateful I would be if you did. Jacob, can you sense the overall wellness of Veni and Rosemary normally? Do you notice a difference in satisfaction or something about them when they feed off you or someone else versus when they feed off a blood bag or from a cup a couple times?"

“If I can help, I'll do what I can... Ah, normally, yes, I can sense usually if they're either suffering or not and such things. Come to think of it, they do seem more refreshed after feeding off me, when compared to drinking from another, less living source.”

”If that's true, couldn't Ma Jianshen just feed off of yo...” Immediately, Githar clamped his metaphorical mouth shut, realizing what he said could be embarrassing. Then he paused for a moment, and thought. Ma stared at him feeling a tinge of fear rise in him at where he thought this conversation was going. Githar pressed on, unaware the reason of his anxiety. “Actually, since you're with Rosemary and Veni... and from what I understand from what Minazi's told me about some things, or what I can guess... And you're Veni's child, would it be so wrong if you were to feed off of Jacob?”

Jacob blinked. He hadn't considered that possibility. He was now considering it and Ma could tell. He must not. It wasn’t merely a matter of pain tolerance. “No!” He exclaimed in English and slammed his hand on the table causing them to jump before Jacob could respond to Githar’s proposal despite the question being directed at him. He couldn’t have Jacob consent to such a thing and make his refusal even ruder.

Jianshen looked at the two wide eyed with a gaze redder than usual. They looked back at him surprised at his reaction. He was already trying not to fantasize about having a feeding partner, but even to think about going for Jacob was unbearable. When the cursed man still had his constant open wounds, constant soreness, constant blood flow, the vampire had found it most difficult to be around him without wanting him…without wanting to do evil to him. Now that he wasn’t constantly sore and constantly bleeding it was more bearable. He knew they meant well, but now they were absolutely tormenting him. They didn’t understand that someone like Jacob, someone who he knew has endured more suffering than anyone else he knew and for thousands of years, would be worse than a drug to him; like using his power on Dieamos. He was still suffering from withdrawal symptoms and felt like he was walking on pins and needles around others at all times. He wanted to do it. This feeling even happened around his students. "I mustn't feed off Jacob even if father would allow it!”

“I…I don't think you quite understand my power... I don't just cause pain randomly or increase it from a current injury or just have my touch hurt on the spot. No, that is the result of brief contact or from someone who hasn’t experienced much in life if I do nothing... it is not merely a matter of a creature having a high pain tolerance, though it would help. I can also sense past pains when I touch someone long enough...and... have them experience it again. The more pain someone has experienced, the stronger I could be against them and the more tempting it is to do it. How to make you see...” He paused only momentarily as he thought rapidly. He scooted closer to Jacob and held up his palm as if to receive something. “May I have your hand? I won't bite it."

Jacob tentatively offered him his hand in which Ma clasped in both of his lightly rubbing it with his fingers. "In my family our powers are pleasurable to use and I desire…no… need to use it deep down. I think it's this way for all of us (children), even Rosemary. The darker the gift the darker the desires and I've been having trouble with mine as of late ever since I got a large taste of it with that accident with Dieamos. I've been taking it out on the blood bags though..." they’re not enough he finished the sentence with his thoughts knowing the way he worded it was deceptive.

He started to rub Jacob's hand against his cheek as he scanned untold years of aches, pains, injuries, and agonies. Even to bring out a millionth of that would be of great pleasure to him. Touching him for this long was almost too much for him to handle. It was a similar temptation to an accidental cut happening suddenly with the blood lightly flowing from it around a vampire who hadn’t fed. His eyes no longer held their darkness, but became as red as any other member of his family. He bent over bringing the Other’s wrist closer to his mouth, his nose and eyes never leaving what it held. The vampire seemed to become more intoxicated and something in his expression seemed more predatory than before as he held the wrist close to his lips.

The others started to worry he would sink his teeth into the flesh when he said he wouldn’t for it was apparent from his expression that he wanted to attack Jacob. The necromancer could feel the vampire’s desires as he felt for his pains. If he still had his open wounds and scent of exposed blood he knew that it would have been too much for his undead senses and that he probably would attack. The now hungry undead parted his lips, sharp teeth more visible than usual, as he continued to speak. "I didn't know your curse was a three month cycle; two months of almost randomized torture with some days much worse than others and almost a break for a month...oh and you’ve been injured quite gruesomely so many times.” His voice was low and full of want as he spoke and took in a shuddering breath.

“You're so desirable in more than one way. A human, necromancer, and you've experienced so much pain in your life it makes me ache with longing; accidental, self-inflicted, inflicted by others, and inflicted to others in self-defense. You're the most small and tender of tea leaves, the most fragrant of flowers, the juiciest of nectarines (note: nectarines are like ambrosia to the Greeks [ie. food of the gods]). I don't feed on pains but at the same time...what would I be unbearably tempted to do if I sank my teeth into someone as attractive as you? Yes... take the pain of at least one whole cycle and cause you to experience it all at once... and also," he brought his mouth down to the wrist, angling one of his hands so Githar wouldn’t see him rudely show his tongue as he licked the pulse on Jacob's wrist slowly, longingly, committing some of what he sensed to memory to do it later on one of those blood bags, and contemplated what he’d do... "Also combine it with the pain of regenerating yourself completely."

He then released the wrist suddenly and scooted as far away from Jacob as the platform would allow without getting off it, took a deep breath, worked at changing his focus from the delectable morsel’s pulse of whom he was now working to think of as friend and not food to that of the gift he brought, and tried to regain his normal demeanor. His cheeks were only slightly flushed, but would have been even redder had he fed more recently. Mercifully they didn’t immediately say anything to him. Jacob calmly took his hand back and nodded, better understanding Ma Jianshen's situation now, a bit of precarious one actually. "And if I were to feed off you, I may lose myself and do just that. So anyone I feed off can't have experienced too much torment or caused it within their life. I believe I could handle someone who has experienced pain and injury at the level of Githar."

Even if he said may do just that out loud, the necromancer knew he would do just that. Jacob knew that the vampire Ma did not have enough self-control not to do it; he barely was able to resist doing it while he held his hand and examined him. His connection to the dead allowed him to feel that when Ma touched him. Though he knew the predator normally had excellent self-control, this would overwhelm him. He must never let him do it unless there seemed to be no other option.

Githar sat where he was and seemed to contemplate something, his glowing eyes focusing in that unusual way that reapers tend to do by dimming ever so slightly when they were in thought. The reaper seemed to take a simulated breath of air as he contemplated what he was about to say and even offer. "Well, in that case... maybe until we can try and find you a few regular blood partners, Ma, I can offer myself then. I think you've explained the risks well enough, and if it's only once in a while, it shouldn't be too overwhelming. Of course, I don't do this lightly either, or consider it something to be handled as not serious. Anyway, I may be no Jacob, but..."

Part 4: Friends can be food

Starts at the end of page 3 and goes onto near the end of page 4.
Notes: I actually took out a chunk of the original conversation (the parts mostly involving Galantros) from this one that I felt wasn’t important so this part is a bit different than the original.

Ma looked up from the pulsing blood bag and gave him a surprised look to which the reaper gave a slight shrug. They could tell the reaper was completely serious and would not go back on his word on this offer, even knowing the excruciating pain it would cause him. Githar's reasons for offering were several. He felt that this was causing so much torment for Jianshen, and over the short time he had come to know the vampire, he had liked the guy. He certainly was someone that was challenging to spar with and share martial arts information with. "...though I am curious about one thing. There was an accident involving Dieamos? ...I'm assuming you used your ability on him, an Abomination class demon? What happened there?"

"Well we were doing a training exercise in the hologamer set to realistic. Dieamos wanted to participate in his true form. So the game was naturally set to everyone versus Dieamos with a couple of shadow goblins. Well we, or at least Rosemary and I, wanted to see if I couldn't use my talents on someone so huge. With help I managed to get close enough to strike him on the spine with the intent to give him a back ache, but... his body didn't react well. It turns out we accidentally stumbled on a weakness of the giant's. Not only did it cause him pain, but it also seriously injured him...as for me... I couldn't control it at all. Once I connected, it wouldn't stop. It was like his body was drawing it out and I couldn't stop it like I normally do. At the same time, it was one of the most pleasurable sensations I've experienced in a while so I didn’t want to end it either. I took myself out of the game since I didn’t think… I didn’t think continuing that was right for a practice fight.

"However... ever since that my desires have grown darker, I want to use it more, and I've been taking it out on the blood bags. I normally think I have good self-control and are disciplined in it, but that incident has proven a stumbling block to me and I have less confidence in my control. They say that some people carry an alcoholic gene and are alcoholics the moment they have their first drink. It's probably like that only this was my first really good taste. Before that I would have accepted the idea of trying Jacob, but now I find myself pondering, more than I used to, on different ways to use my gift of note... and I feel like I want to do that again."

“Dieamos fortunately didn't hold any grudge against Ma. He was more curious about that aspect than anything else, really. It's rare that an Abomination has such a devastating weakness,” said Jacob about the incident.

”Really interesting... Actually, this is a little off topic, but I just remembered something from all this blood talk that might be interesting to you both. Was just thinking on it. They've been working more on the blood bio-tech lately, and recently managed a way to reproduce from samples blood from specific individuals into a blood bag. Not cloning per say, that's definitely outlawed in Limbo, and anyway that's had all sorts of negative results in other worlds.. but I digress. If Veni had allowed such a thing, I was thinking it would be possible for Jacob to imbue one of those with his own blood and necro-energies to feed with. Would also be useful for Rosemary and Veni if you had to be away on a trip or something, Jacob.”

Jacob was taken aback. “This is the first I've heard of such a thing, must be extremely new. And I'm willing to wager expensive.” Githar nodded in agreement.

"You make it sound like you mean for someone like me and not just Master Veni and Rosemary. I don't think the problem with us and sharing is necessarily someone else tasting the blood... I think it's a little more complicated than that. I think we loath the idea of someone else using their power, such as hypnotism or seduction, on their person and also the thought of someone else sticking their fangs in their skin... and other things we may do while feeding. So I think they'd prefer that over someone else biting him. There are some people who do go from vampire to vampire, but in general a person usually is with one or two if the vampires are close. Also many vampires, myself included, tend to take care of our blood partners in different ways by doing our best to protect them from harm, helping them get a job if they need it, supporting them if they're in trouble, making sure their families don't want for anything should they die suddenly, allow them to stay with us some nights if they want, and some of us may be willing to be their lover if they so desire. If another vampire bites them without mine or their willing consent, it is seen as a challenge.”

Githar hmmed and scratched the side of his face idly. ”With how you explained it anyway, I can see how that would cause some problems. I sort of wonder where my limits would be personally of being feed off of. We reapers don't really have a circulatory system, so one place is just as good as another for blood drinking I suppose. I guess it would come down to what I'd be comfortable with, maybe an arm or a wrist.”

Ma Jianshen smiled and poured them more tea. He pulled one of the gifts in front of him, picked it up, brought it close to his face, and sniffed at it. "If you don't know your limits, you probably should have a spotter, like in weight lifting, at least the first time."

Jacob stretched a little at his seat, again ignoring some slight pains. Both he and Githar observed Jianshen sniffing at the blood bag food. It gave off a somewhat exquisite scent for the vampire, being of the less common variety. If it weren't completely drained it would regenerate its blood a few times at least if given enough rest. “I think Jacob could fill that role of spotter fairly well, couldn't you?” The necromancer nodded. “Would you want to try now Ma since we're all already here anyway?”

The vampire was about to passively protest that he was fine, but the reaper gave him such a stern look that he instead said, “Jacob is the best person to stop someone like me if needed."

He set the thing back down and phased from his spot next to Jacob to one next to Githar. It was actually a mist form. Githar took off and neatly folded and placed his trench coat-like outer garb aside as Jianshen took his hand. With it off, he didn't look nearly as gangly as he did with the coat on, the musculature of his skin exposed on his arms and through his shirt a bit.

Next to large muscle man, the other shorter martial artist seemed puny. Even his hands with their long nails looked soft and delicate in comparison. His clothes were loose fitting so it was more difficult to tell his build under the long sleeves. The vampire rubbed his thumb on the back of the hand. "The initial biting is what hurts the most. Since I'm not overwhelmingly tempted to do anything anymore, it should feel similar to being chomped on by a smaller demon and if you let me take my time after the initial shock, it should become a throbbing pain like any other wound. All I can really do for initial relief is manipulate you into being less nervous... if you are...it is hard to tell without a heartbeat and without digging through your eyes... and to notice my actions less. If you wanted I could try to make you desire it up until the point I actually bite you. It is very unfortunate I lost the ability to make it feel nice. I could also hit you on a spot on the arm to make it harder for you to feel it, but it'll be sore there and I'm not sure if that pressure point works on reapers (as it does on humans)."

The muscle man gave a slight grin with his eyes and cheek structure. ”I know some breathing techniques that are excellent for reducing stress and relaxing... Shame I don't have the need or necessity to breath at all. I am uncertain about the desire thing, as it would just seem to me that the resulting bite would snap me out of it more so than if I were expecting it. Hitting a pressure point like that might work, but wouldn't be nearly as effective as it would be on a human. It'd be more of a ghost reaction for my kind, and I don't think I want to be sore there. I still have a little merchandise and such I need to move around when I get back to my shop and home later. I'll be fine, go ahead Ma. I'm ready.”

The man in question smiled and said, "Hmph. Someday, I'll figure out how to strike you and disrupt or hinder that massive energy flow of yours."

“Heh, I've no doubt you'll learn that soon enough.”

The reaper did seem to be rather calm for someone who knew he was going to experience quite a bit of discomfort and pain, and didn't seem to be all that tensed up. Githar was going into this with the mentality of getting a shot. The more you tense up and get nervous, the more it would hurt. However, he knew it was still going to hurt quite a bit, so he wasn't expecting a painless slight p***k of a needle. Fangs are quite different in that regard, especially with a vampire with such ability with pain. In contrast the vampire was nervous: nervous at harming a friend, afraid he might get carried away with what he was doing, and uncomfortable that he was being watched. The reaper didn’t betray that he noticed this with his empathy for fear of making it worse. To ease his tension, the vampire raised his want for blood by concentrating on the pulses around him, by smelling the skin on the wrist, and licking it as he remembered reapers healed quickly and from what he’s seen others do to these beings; his saliva would prevent such a thing from happening quickly.

He then moved the arm over the back of his shoulders until they were in a position like two people cuddling while watching a movie, but with the wrist in front of his mouth instead of on his shoulder. He swiftly struck; teeth breaking the skin and pulling out rapidly like a card punch. The reaper grimaced and gave a slight grunt of pain as his flesh was broken by what felt like nails. The vampire’s lips sealed on the wound and he didn’t allow any of the colorful liquid to escape, finding it flowed surprisingly easy for one without a pulse to help it along. It did hurt a fair amount, but it was manageable. Being somewhat prepared for it helped as well. It felt strange to him and he still felt faint from the experience finding his movements almost paralyzed, but he reasoned he was helping a friend, so he could deal with any feelings of oddness that came up. The reaper’s eyes still shone brightly so the necromancer wasn’t worried.

Githar, if compared to Galantros' more extreme sweet flavor, was not overly sweet tasting in his blood, perhaps due to a difference in diets and daily habits, plus biological makeups. Sugary enough would be the adjective to describe it, but not enough to feel like it was giving one a toothache. He didn’t really care for sweet blood as his main meal anyways so it was good that it wasn’t overly sweet. Red eyes slowly closed as the blood hit his tongue and he started to sense things from his companion’s body that tantalized him. How could he have forgotten the shotgun blast that nearly killed him? Oh how it hurt him then. One of his hands moved towards the spot of the old injury and then snapped back to hold onto the appendage with the other hand. As he reached a point in which he felt it was enough, though he could easily have continued, he ceased in licking the wound directly to let it heal.

When he was done, he moved away from Githar to not be as close to him. He wouldn’t have minded leaning into his victim since he was still in momentary bliss from the blood. After taking a few breaths and looking more alive and flushed than he usually did, he asked, "do you need anything?"

Githar rubbed his wrist to try to soothe the lingering pain, before slipping back on his comfortable trench coat. He reached for one of the snacks and idly "nibbled" on it, absorbing its life giving nutrition and energies. "I'm good, thank you. Some of these snacks will do just fine, Ma. I didn't lose too much energy. I think that went rather well. How do you feel?"

"Wonderful... and satisfied. Thank you. Have you ever tried going somewhere that is plentiful in the foods you like and readily there, but instead of that you choose something that is nutritious for you still but nowhere near as satisfying, maybe like those dry just add hot water things I have? Sure it's easy to do for a little while, but try doing it for a long time while always seeing the banquet, smelling it, always having it within reach...Very difficult when you've gone for the better dish most of your life and now have it just always 'being rubbed into ones face' I believe is the saying."

"It sounds like sustaining myself purely on electrical energy, instead of having actual meals. I tried that once for a couple days and it made the food taste seem much better tasting when I went back to it.”

I’m sure you binged on it when you went back, thought Ma wishing he could without severely draining the reaper or killing someone or several people. Not that the act of it bothered him. On the contrary he wouldn’t mind at all, but he couldn’t do that here. If he did it at home when he didn’t need to, it would reflect on his character if it became known. "I doubt it is as bad as that. They at least usually taste good..." They just didn’t offer him the feeling of bliss things more humanoid did.

“Anyway, I'm glad I was able to help out. Like I said, we'll look into finding you some more partners for feeding as well, right Jacob?"

Jacob nodded, "Right, of course. I'll get right on that actually as soon as possible."

"Do you want to do something? Go out, learn that move I mentioned, board game, or something else?" With the new blood in him he felt energetic and wanted to do something.

Part 5: The Oldman loves lizards

In this part the group goes to a park. Starts at the end of page 4 and goes until about half of the last post on page 5. This part actually required a lot of editing from the original posts to make the actions and dialogue flow more smoothly. For example the dialogue might come from several posts away from the descriptive text. During the journey I had tried to emphasize the vampire’s ability to focus on that which is near and far away along with keeping with a conversation while his attention is elsewhere. Basically the point was to focus on innate, common abilities that aren’t normally explored: sight, sound, smell, and the extra senses a vampire may have (like the sensing of a heartbeat). I don’t think Ma’s ability in the senses to be above average, he’s just very observant of his surroundings. He’s the old man who likes to stop and smell the roses type of guy or in this case gawk at the reptiles. Also from GL’s end it was to be more descriptive about an area in Limbo.

Surprisingly Jacob jumped at the idea. He has been trying to not be so reclusive in his habits ever since his two loves started to take him out on dates. They have also gone on other enjoyable outings with BlackMN and sometimes the Twins. "Getting out for a bit might do me some good, if you two are up for it. I think I've almost started being a little too cooped up again with some things. If I get into my old habits again by some rare chance, I'm sure I'll catch hell for it. How about you Githar?"

Githar seemed to grin slightly at something he found funny about himself and decided to share it with his answer. "Sure. Limbo's night life is pretty active enough. Normally, I would be considering the fact that there's stuff I need to take care of back at my shop, or things and tech stuff that needs a bit of organization, or having to worry about scheduling my next several trips for my merchant runs... Like you, if I lapse too much into that, Minazi will smack me upside my non-existant skull. Anything in particular we want to do, or should we just walk around and see what there is to see?"

Oh great they wanted to go out and do something with the night life. The vampire had hoped they'd pick the other two options; board game or practice in which he taught Jacob something. He looked young enough as he was a creature of the night... but his outside habits were more old man like than a young restless person. "Well there's Kithos' Natural History Museum, Shar's Museum of Tolerance, the 500 story tall scythe goblin… the huge zoo and aquarium in Dalos City has a creature that looks like a Keileon (you might know it as a Kirin or Qilin which is a Chinese mythological creature) that I'd like to see. Nearby there's a lovely park and often various species of people play different board, dice, or card games, and the bingo hall should be open, but I think you had something else in mind," he finished noting the strange look they gave him at his tourist type suggestions and things that was more stereotypical of what a more elderly man would do. Visiting places like that is what he often did in his spare time.

The others mostly thought some of the things were interesting, save for maybe the insanely tall scythe goblin attraction. That was mostly a tourist trap. Personally, Jacob thought the thing was kind of gaudy, and Githar didn't care for it much either... Sometimes he'd see people come into his shop wearing “I survived the giant scythe goblin!” shirts or other bits of memorabilia clothing, and it was all he could do not to shake his head... If people wanted to spend money on that kind of thing though, that was their business, not his. As for the Keileon creature, that wasn't anything too new, but he'd been meaning to see it with Minazi. Jacob may have wanted to take his vampires out on a date there with “little Black” tagging along to show her around, or just get her and Galantros tickets there for themselves.

”I think I know of the park you're talking about, Ma, Grelot Park. It's usually not that bad a place to visit. We should walk there, there's probably a few sights and such along the way as well.”

"Of course," said Ma with a smile when Githar mentioned the park, though that wasn't quite the area he had in mind. The park he was speaking of was in the opposite direction of Grelot Park. It was still a fine place though and more popular. Seeing the keileon creature was actually at the top of his to see list ever since he found out about it a couple days ago, but he didn't say anything. It was probably better that they didn’t see him gawk at the creature anyways like he did when he first saw a species of dragon that looked like how his culture depicted them.

“I don't think I've been to this park before...” said Jacob. Limbo being a huge world itself had several places he hadn’t been.

”I think you'll like it. They sometimes have performing mage artists and the like there, as well as other performers that are actually pretty good. There is usually a couple of merchants selling some snacks or food as well. If we take the right streets there, pretty sure there will be some other interesting sights we'll see.”

And a lot of thunderous noise, Ma thought.

Heading out the door, the group went on their way. As they traversed the street, they soon took notice that certain areas were just as at night as they were during the day; people to work, or to places for meals and hanging out with friends. They stopped at a crosswalk area as a large transport hovered by, snaking around from a corner, and then stopping to let out a variety of passengers. The vampire mused that there were few creatures of "myth" that reapers haven't seen and that they considered their technology so superior that there was little that could bring about a childlike wonder and awe to them. He pictured several of them passing by the keileon creature looking at it, taking their picture, and staring at it for a little while before moving on. To him they had always existed in myth and at the top of the myth creature world from when he was from. The Qi dynasty made it dragon. He pictured for him to see one would be like seeing a mermaid or unicorn to a westerner. He mused this as they walked down the street for several blocks before the street became more busy and active.

Out of the corner of his eye, Githar commented he thought he saw Alzamus, but he wasn't entirely sure. It was at least somebody in high council member clothing, he could tell that. The vampire looked and then left to get a better look to see if it was him. He dodged and weaved expertly through the crowd, so quickly that many didn't know that he passed them. He saw that it hadn't been Alzamus, but rather one of the other high council member representatives of Dalos that had exited the transport. He came back to where he was within seconds of leaving before either noticed he had stepped away. He then continued his slow and laggard pace and movements with his wrist in hand behind his back. It was the normal speed for humans, but to him it felt slothful after having just moved so quickly.

Even if Shar wasn't the capital of Limbo, it could still be somewhat bustling. A variety of sounds and smells came across them as well, from restaurants, to street vendors, to music playing from nearby clubs they passed, or street musicians. Githar paused for a very quick moment to buy a favorite snack of his from a vendor, a type of quickly fried lizard meat seasoned to be slightly spicy. ”Every time I pass a vendor selling one of these Chesni meat steaks, I have to have at least a small one. It's one of my little guilty pleasures... I still try not to make a habit out of eating them though; even for a reaper they're so full of nutrition and well... fattening stuff that it would make one of us lose fitness after too many. Pyro can attest to that, it's one of his guilty pleasures as well, and probably the reason, he'll admit easily, that he has a bit of a stomach.”

“It smells.. interesting... like beef mixed with chicken, but something else odd about it.”

Unlike the others, to the vampire it was a bloodless unappetizing smell on a stick that they called food and a lizard like creature at that. With the two of them focused on it, Ma's eyes began to wander. He still listened to Githar speak, but he started to become background noise to the vampire as he looked and listened to other things like the drumming of other individuals blood, the crunch of a bug underfoot some 50 feet away, the worms digging in the grassy area, to a canine going through the trash cans in the alley further up the street. "I thought that reaper's physique was mostly due to genetics and in part lifestyle choices," he said sounding distanced like them to himself, but still trying to participate in the small talk. In short he thought Pyro had the belly because he was a cook and thus tasted most of his own food rather than exercising.

"Well, a reaper's body is mostly determined by that, though if energy absorption is done in extreme excess at times, it seems to trigger something reminiscent of over eating in our bodies. Working off that excess energy through exertion undoes that, and in some ways triggers a different response in that we use our energies more efficiently. It's probably something that lingered back when reapers were more human-like long ago in our history. Want to try a bite, Jacob? Here, I'll tear off a piece... Just make sure you don't make a habit of eating it all the time like Pyro does. I'm sure Veni and Rosemary wouldn't want you to lose your figure. ”

Jacob thoughtfully chewed the small offering of meat, finding the flavor of the food to be particularly good before he swallowed it. Silently, he gripped the side of his chest, wordlessly saying nothing as he fought to ignore a curse pain for a moment and succeeded. The curse pain didn’t escape Ma’s notice however, but he pretended to not notice it. “Thanks... see anything you want to try, Ma, or are you sated from earlier still?”

Jacob said this, because there were also a few vendors offering blood in various methods of drinking. Pouches, glasses, the typical and non-typical organic blood bags... One or two also seemed to have individuals who appeared to be in extremely top physical health, offering their own actual blood while hooked up to special devices that would keep them revitalized and rejuvenated, restoring their health and misplaced blood. This dining service to blood suckers caught the vampire’s eye, but the other two didn’t see it. One of them, a reaper who looked a bit tired, disengaged himself from the machine to quit for the night, so he wouldn't over-exert himself, waved goodbye to his coworkers, and went off into the crowds.

Only Ma's eye's moved towards Jacob when he was addressed while the rest of him stayed in its original direction. He was still warm and sated from Githar's blood. The only thing that would have made the feeding better would be if he had killed the reaper too, but a healthy reaper, he knew, was too difficult for him to do that by draining. It would be uncommon for him to kill his sentient food anyways. The one who got off the machine would have been a much easier target for that. His eye's followed the reaper off into the crowd, making him seem aloof to the others, as he thought of ways to sneak up on him and how fun it would be to follow a creature at a distance in a crowd that didn't have the thump of a heart beat for him to focus in on.

Then he turned his head towards Jacob and brought into focus his immediate surroundings. "I am sated on blood. Is it true about your figure? Are you able to gain weight? I thought your body was like mine, your normal state barely changing as time passes unless something happens. Or has that changed with the breaking of the part of your curse that kept your wounds always present?”

"Well, I suppose after that part of my curse was gone, we've noticed that bits of exercise started to finally improve me a little, while also what I've been eating had put a little more weight on me. It doesn't seem to be by too much, so I'm not sure what the limits are, but it's probably better to try to stay on the healthier side of things I suppose, even if I still have the longevity.”

"It is better for you to stay on the healthy side. You're eating for three I assume? I doubt you could easily put on much weight doing that. You better be healthy for that," said Ma with a serious tone and look on his face. Jacob's health could affect the health of his father he realized and it wouldn't be good for Veni to get sick.

Jacob nodded. "Of course, I don't plan on letting my health slip anymore like I used to in the past before I met them."

"Does your hair grow on your head and face? ...have they been able to leave a mark on you?" His gaze moved towards Jacob's throat which was almost at eye level to him from their height difference.

The cursed man then scratched his chin idly at the mention of him growing facial hair, unaffected by the vampire's potentially unsettling statement. "Well, no, I haven't really been able to grow a beard or anything, and my hair seems to stay at this same length... As far as I can tell as well, no marks have been left on me either."

"Such a pity," said Ma Jianshen with a momentary small sad smile and his eyes seemed to glare at the lack of any markings. As they walked on his eyes gave Jacob a side glance and stared at him for several seconds. He was enthralled by the human's tiny movements which included muscle twitches, breathing, and his pulse. He was also enchanted by the many colors on his skin which even reapers had. It was just harder for humans to see. It occurred to him that the Other's improved health may just be him reaching a sort of equilibrium now that he wasn't constantly living with what would normally be fatal wounds since his hair, beard, and, he now assume nails based on the other things, did not change.

Ma walked for a while in silence enjoying the sights of many different people types while the other two chit chatted, many of which he was used to seeing now but once upon a time never dreamed existed. The sounds were also pleasant save for the occasional loud ones that hurt his ears, but at the same time they were also satisfying to him.

He watched the people walk past, several of which involved couples. When he eventually spotted a vampire coupled with another living humanoid, he eventually broke his silence and continued a conversation from earlier as if it had never ended. "I think I might not only have trouble expressing love suitable for the times, but I likely wouldn't be able to express it acceptably at all. If I became that fascinated with someone to want to spend all my time with and embrace them, I'd probably gain an almost maddening desire to taste their blood too if they're living. But what if they didn't want that? How long could I stand to be with them and want them in such a way that they didn't want, but have every fiber of my being want to embrace them in a kiss?

"I suppose that if they truly loved me back that wouldn't matter eventually and they'd let me. But my kisses don't bring temporary bliss like other vampires. Actually that's not quite accurate, I think that it could but the pain it causes isn't hazed over and demands to be felt even in beings that might not have otherwise noticed so it snaps them out of the bliss. So I would have to deal with a reasonable aversion to pain also, which I wouldn't blame them for. Creatures don't like to feel pain really. If I didn't leave them soon enough, I might force myself on them simply because I might lose control of myself. It is in our nature to desire the blood of the living, but more so, I think, if we have any form of love for them. Yes I think a relationship like that with a lovely living creature would be more difficult for me than others, but I am not sure I care about it beyond thinking about it when I see it.” Jacob and Githar quietly listened to Ma's thoughts, just wordlessly nodding a little here and there to show they were listening, but weren't able to come up with much to say about his situation unfortunately. Then again, he was mostly just expressing himself it seemed. However Jacob understood to a point what he mentioned about desiring the blood of those they loved.

“Though I don't recommend trying it for the first time out in public, but have you ever thought of using a disguise ruin to see what it is like to be a vampire? Especially you, Jacob, who live with them? Can they even turn you into such a creature?"

The necromancer blinked at the question. "Honestly, I hadn't thought of that. I'm pretty sure it might be possible, I've just only see them for utility type uses instead of recreational for myself."

"The same goes for me, although when I was younger I did experiment a little when I first got my original disguise runes. I remember the first time becoming human was disorienting for me in a variety of ways. Anyway, it would be a learning experience. That much is for certain. I wonder if Minazi's done that before." It was amazing how much he could speak of Minazi's old boyfriend or the crowd she apparently ended up in as a result without feeling jealous.

"Definitely would give me a much better perspective and an interesting experience. Thanks for suggesting that, I'm going to have to try it now... On a related note... Githar, what *do* you look like as a human?"

Githar chuckled a little, idly noting that they arrived at Grelot Park, entering underneath its welcoming archway sign high above for the many tall beings in Limbo. "It has been a while. If I recall, somewhat Caucasian, with a hint of some sort of Asian ethnicity in me I think. I never had any blood or genetic work done on me to confirm what sort of background I would have had. So earth wise, I'm not sure what culture I could have come from. I also had a bit of a goatee apparently. I can't remember my eye color. It may have ended up actually being brown instead of the blue I'm used to as my natural reaper form. I'm also not quite as tall, probably stopping at around six foot tall, if not a touch shorter. Still tall for a human I recognize, but not my real height. Also, black hair, not quite as long as yours Jacob. I wonder if haircuts would save after using a disguise rune. I'm familiar with how you two look like as you are, I'm curious as to how you'd appear as reapers."

The park before them was very well kept, and particularly Githar's favorite color; green. Lots of plant life, flowers, and the like were all before them. There were trimmed areas and walkways around these areas that weren't intended for play or walking on such as spots with plain grass. Immediately, Ma noticed a type of flower that wasn't seen as much in other parts of Limbo being used here to provide light, as well as the standard light crystals. The flowers glowed, looking familiar to a tulip with varied, beautiful pastel colors on each flower. They also grew in bunches, so each batch of them resembled a rainbow of light.

There were some sheltered areas that looked like they were made for eating and resting in if it rained, which actually did every now and then in Limbo, but mildly. Weather in Limbo always seemed to be mild, and never in any extreme, at least in the civilized areas. Some had chalked this up to tampering with technology, but it was more due to a natural, strange phenomenon with the energies of the realm. Benches and little tables were present also with board games, both traditional and more digital versions that were built into the tables, playing like sci-fi holograms.

There were a few signs posted that pointed to different areas of what seemed the fairly large park, such as walking paths, a playground for the younger visitors, and even a pond. A decent amount of people were currently occupying the park, and if it were one of a smaller magnitude, it would be overcrowded, but at the moment it seemed to be sparsely populated... enough to be comfortable and peaceful almost.

"Actually...I use it for recreational purposes quite often," Ma replied. "As interesting as it was, I didn't like smelling with my whole body when I fell into a puddle of yuck within the first few minutes. My usual equilibrium and balance was off. I feel so clumsy when I become human and I felt that way at first as a reaper. But I quickly got used to it. Your senses don't make me feel nearly as blind or deaf. And with my qi exercises, your bodies would really enhance my fighting style in wonderful and different ways if only I could get its speed and strength to match mine."

He took out a pen which could write with or without paper, take pictures, and display them like a sci-fi hologram, record his voice for a memo, along with some other functions. It was possibly the most high tech device the vampire owned besides his phone. He scrolled through some thumbnails and then enlarged a picture of a selfie of the upper torso of a reaper with lines to suggest he was about 1000 years old, which is about 50 human years, with red eyes, a rather skinny face, probably about 6 ft, and salt and pepper long hair in the same braded fashion he normally wore with the doorway to Githar's shop in the background. "Sadly you weren't in that day, but Malos didn't appear to suspect even though I did nothing to hide my normal speech pattern when I speaking English and if he did, he didn't say anything." His lips slowly lifted into a smile when he spoke of Malos.

"Hah.. Well, go figure. I'm pretty sure Malos didn't have the vaguest of ideas, because he probably would have mentioned it to me. He might have thought you may have been a hybrid of a reaper, like Galantros is, but perhaps without as much of the ability to easily gain languages into our minds like we normally can."

"Ah plus I think my voice sounded more… melodious in that form. I was planning to try again eventually to see if you would guess."

Jacob scratched his head and started to muse to himself at this, what Githar had said triggering something that he needed to remember. "That reminds me... speaking of hybrid reapers, I need to see Yelix for some more construction nano-spell potions. The live-in caves some of my demon friends inhabit could use some sprucing up, and he has just what I need..."

As they passed near a tree, Ma suddenly was faced to face with a cute, big-eyed lizard creature with paw-less limbs wrapped around a thick tree branch, its head dangling down. It "churred" almost adorably, staring at this new visitor in curiosity. Its colors let it blend in with the tree pretty well. His eyes widened and faced softened into a look of adoration at the little lizard. He slowly moved his finger towards the top of the creature’s head. Another tree climber lizard caught Jacob slightly off guard as he hadn't been paying attention to the tree as a smaller one grasped onto his arm playfully.

"Heh... It looks like these climbers have gotten used to people being in the park." Jacob gently put the climber back on a tree limb.

"Like.... ducks, or pigeons in some Earth parks, right?" Githar inquired.

"Those still not allow a person to easily touch them," the enthralled vampire said while running his finger along the scales of the lizard he faced. He greatly enjoyed the cool texture of reptile skin.

Something fluttered in the dark, and what it was became more clear as a flock of creatures flew over a light crystal lamp... a flock of feathery winged, almost snake like animals soared by, one of them stopping to coil itself around the lamp, and ruffle into its feathers for a moment, before taking off again. Although not extremely common, they were native to Limbo and more easily seen at the Soul Fortress. His gaze moved away from the tree climber to the flying snakes. Another dove near a pond, and plucked up an unawares merper for a quick snack. It barely had time to "merp!?" before it was gulped down in a flash.

Its decent appeared slow to the vampire as it went for the merper in his vision, when in reality it was quite fast. It made him think a little of dragons. "What a marvelous little hunter!” The night dweller exclaimed suddenly with a little awe in his voice. He could lie on the ground and watch them for hours. “Do you ever really take time to appreciate your surroundings?”

“Admittedly, I haven't done that enough in the past. It's what my friends and Minazi have tried to beat into my head many times before, but I'm slowly learning. The most I used to do in the past would be to tend to my rooftop garden and practice my art. Now whenever I go out to "merchant", I find myself actually taking breaks on those trips to find interesting locations, as well as just slowing down in general."

Jacob nodded, agreeing with Githar in a non-verbal way. It needn't be repeated that he was taking more time now to enjoy what was around him more than he used to as well.

“Practicing your art can be a form of recreation,” Ma gave the reaper that at least. He himself was almost always monitoring his own movements. “But we didn't come here for a park walk. We came for the entertainment did we not or are we going to keep walking to our hearts content? Though… I don't think Jacob's night vision would allow him to enjoy it as much as I."

“Yeah our night vision is better than Jacobs,” Githar agreed, “so I don't think a night walk in the park would be as enjoyable to Jacob as it would be for us. He'd mostly only see a few flowers here and there, and the glow of my eyes.”

In one of the patches of grass there were two performers doing their art for the public at night; one of which was spectacular to see in the dusk hours. A "light magician", that was able to bend streams and waves of colorful light into patterns and shapes around herself in interesting and wondrous ways. Sometimes, the demonstrations involved them becoming solid. She worked in tandem with the other an aquamancer in this way, her solid beams and waves of light moving water, while his water floated and shifted about in similar ways of beauty; reflecting her light and mingling as well. They had a small, modest crowd around them watching.

Eyeing the light and water performers, the dark haired necromancer thought that might be interesting to watch. Particularly since aquamancy was one of his minor talents. "Why don't we take in that show over there? Maybe I could pick up a few interesting tricks, just for the fun of it." Something splashed in the water of the pond as they made their way over to the magic performers, and Ma sensed it was some sort of simple mollusk creature being the quickest out of the group. The park was teeming with both animal and plant life.

Eventually they stood before the two performers alongside the rest of the small crowd, who quietly applauded with awe and amusement at their act. The light mage sent up a small sphere of rainbow light into the air above the crowd's head that glowed gently in the night sky, where it eventually stopped a ways up and hovered there. What was apparently her husband from the way the two acted with each other, created moisture out of the air that surrounded the sphere, and set out streamers of water in fantastical ribbons that swerved around and over the heads of the spectators. Soon, the water streamers began to fill with a rush of the same light from that rainbow sphere, making patterns of light and shadow dance about the park around them... There seemed to be something strange about the way the two combined with each other as well, not normal water or light, as they produced musical chimes of sorts as the water wavered in place with the light, the glow streaming through the moisture.

One being that had their small child on their shoulders, beings that both resembled a leech and a bat at the same time in humanoid shape, lifted his claw like hand to touch the water stream, and giggled oddly as it made a reverberating musical tone, rippling waves throughout the water and light. They had probably seen this act before, but were still fascinated by it. The performing couple encouraged the crowd to touch the streams of combined light and water for a while.

Ma watched and tried to decide if the moisture was drawn out of the air or if they used magic to summon it. He carefully listened to the tunes people created. He noticed that holding ones arm in longer created a longer note and that different break types in the water, like when one used a finger vs a whole arm, created different notes from his observations. When he reached up to try it he didn't merely slice his appendage through it as several people did. He quickly thrummed his fingers against the water and tested the sounds it made like he was tuning an instrument. He then tried to move his fingers in and out to do the first couple lines of the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star tune, which he thought might be recognizable to at least a few there. He messed up the notes the first couple attempts, but ended up getting it. Twinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are.

The light performer grinned at Ma, and played some more of the tune in response to his music playing, at the applause of the rest of the crowd. She and her husband, it was more apparent now that they saw their wedding bands, seemed to be humans, at least from the outside... The vampire noticed that something about their heart rhythms seemed off though. However he still clapped with the others once the tune was finished.

He then leaned towards Jacob as if to whisper into his ear. Even though the other man was a good 5 inches taller than him, the sound of Ma's voice came in as if he had his mouth near the ear when he didn't really have it that close. "Do you see how beautifully those two move together and coordinate their moves? Just imagine you, my father, and sister moving together in perfect rhythm like these two to defend yourselves and fight off foes. Think of how beautiful that would be if you can find ways to combine your talents as these two have and come up with unexpected and new techniques. Think of it! If Veni is able to allow your aquamancy to travel through the shadows with Rosemary's wind backing up its speed and if he was able to hide the sight of the actual casting, what a surprise attack! Or using Rosemary's practice with aim to help you aim an attack. You three are already powerful together and apart, but you can become so much more frightening than you already are."

“Hmm... that does sound very interesting, I have to admit. We probably should train together much more so we can do better...” Jacob paused appearing as if he was going to say more, but said nothing. He repeated what Ma said in his mind, “...you can become so much more frightening than you already are.” He wondered why he thought he'd been feeling a slight twinge of fear, a nervousness from the undead man the whole time... No, he knew why once he thought about it for even just a second. He was a necromancer for one reason, and they can do either wonderful or horrible things for any undead being depending on how benevolent or malevolent they were feeling. The one next to him had seen him do the gruesome act of using a vampire's skeleton to pierce and kill him to make an example of the creature when the vampire tried to backstab Veni... That was exceedingly brutal, but swift. He had to admit, at the time he was possibly feeling vengeful as well.

Another reason, was that he was directly Veni's master now, something that he never thought too much about either. He usually saw himself on equal terms with Rosemary and Veni, never wanting to abuse his title as master to them, yet still willing to accept it. At any rate, since Veni was Ma's master, and Jacob was Veni's... That made him Ma's as well. And one with necrotic abilities and a spell list like his could be very frightening he supposed, though he would never ill-use it against someone who didn't truly deserve it. Jacob said nothing else on the matter, at least not now in public. This at least further awakened him to just how much dangerous knowledge and power he had in him that needed to be wielded all that much more carefully.

The undead in question had one eye studding Jacob's body language after his pause and was a little worried he had said something wrong. "Yes, but don't become obsessive about it either because Veni doesn't like to seriously study or practice anything for more than a couple hours at a time without breaks as I am sure you're aware. Unless, you make it interesting to him. For example making it seem like a dance," he said these things even though he thought Jacob should know this.

The couple was finishing up their act by this point and time, beautiful swirls of light and water in little funnel shapes around the crowd, harmless but elegant, streaming out to each other in a circumference. They all reached up with a “beam” to form a dome over their heads, making a chandelier that glistened and sparkled, chiming wondrously in the night sky. Finally, from the dome, geysers of water shot up like a fancy fountain, each with individual bright lights of color illuminating it like a sort of fireworks display. Finally, they allowed the water and light to gradually dissipate.

A few crowd members were placing some money in a watery looking tip “jar”, the water causing the funds to float all around in a lava lamp like fashion. Githar tossed in a few valuable shiny coins himself, as did Jacob. Having no new insights into the creatures oddities other than multiple hearts despite having his magnified senses aimed at them, he got closer to put money in the watery tip jar to see if that would help. It didn’t, but he was also blinking to get rid of the light dots in his vision from that last show of light.

Next to the jar were business cards, and Jacob picked up one of these. He thought that maybe Black or some of the other young demon children would enjoy seeing this show and they did performances for parties it seemed. It was fortunate that he had a way of contacting the performers, for they immediately thanked the crowd for their attention and vanished in a flourish of liquid and glowing light, leaving practically no trace that they were there... A type of showy teleportation spell it seemed. “Hmm, shame. I was hoping I could discuss with them about some of the magic they used. I'll just have to contact them through their card about that.”

Ma smiled at Jacob's comment. He would have said something about them leaving quickly due to seeing Jacob coming with his questions, but the vampire wasn't sure if he should or if it was appropriate for him to tease Jacob. Veni teases Jacob, Rosemary teases Jacob, Ma teases Veni, but Ma wasn't familiar with Jacob. Once again he got the feeling that he in part wanted Githar to leave once they were done with their travels about and had headed back so he could have some time alone with Jacob. He enjoyed Githar's company, more so now than he used to, but he has never really had an opportunity to be with just Jacob. There was usually someone else there when he'd see him or the alone time was brief. At the same time he was glad Githar was there because he wasn't used to the necromancer's company and he was indeed slightly afraid of him. A person who could so easily kill a creature like him, more powerful even, with what appeared to be no strain on his being was to be feared. It would be foolish not to be weary of him. What was Jacob like when no one else was around? Probably the same or similar as he usually saw him the vampire concluded.

Part 6: Alone at Last
This part goes from the last post on page 5 till this post on page 8. This section, like part 5, has a lot of editing from the source material as well. I also change some of the wording to what Ma says to make it more clear what I meant and also his explanation to Jacob of his own name as I had discovered some things since the original writing of that post. I decided to cut out a lot of details for the puppet show which can be read from post 3 on page 6 for the first part and from various other posts on that page. Jacob and Ma mostly walk and talk after seeing this performance.

There were other performers as well such as a magician who used no magic at all, but really dexterous hands. He would put two squishy balls into a volunteer's hand, have them close it and when they'd open them there'd be several more. Some hypnotist whose methods Ma personally thought was bogus and that the volunteers weren't really hypnotized, but following along with the crowd. He could find out possibly what this hypnotist was doing by reading his thoughts; not like how Rosemary does nor as easily, but many vampires do have the power to sense underlying thoughts sometimes when not peering into the eyes if they concentrated hard enough. There also was a group doing a shadow puppet show with translucent colored and highly detailed puppets behind a translucent screen and a movable light source behind the puppets to make them appear to walk, dance, fight, nod, and laugh. This reminded him of a form of entertainment he used to enjoy.

Githar was about to comment on the puppet show when something quietly buzzed on the inside of his hood. Pressing a finger to the side of it, he excused himself from the conversation with Jacob and Ma to answer a call. "Malos? Why are you calling at this hour, it's kind of odd for you to... Rusty? What's wrong with Rusty? Okay, that does sound like his body is malfunctioning a bit badly. Maybe one of the crystallic components have gone bad, or fractured or something. Sure, I'll come over right away, I'm positive we have replacement parts on hand, it's just going to take some time to repair whatever's going on."

Lightly double tapping the side of his head, Githar hanged up the call and returned his attention to the other two. "Sorry fellas, but I have to go. Our mechanical friend Rusty's having some pretty bad problems, and I have to play service technician and get him working again. It's happened before... Where he just another regular device, it would wait, but I'm pretty sure he feels discomfort when this happens, so I'd better get going."

"He must appreciate that you care so much for his feelings," said Ma who thought that what had just come to mind had come into fruition a bit quicker than he could conceive. "If Jacob leaves early enough, I'll come to help you move your merchandise. If not I'll see if you need help when I'm free tomorrow night."

The reaper left and the two of them decided to watch the shadow puppet show. It was in two parts. The first part told the tale of the Toe Eater which reminded the vampire more of an urban legend than a fairy tale. This is what Tiamos had been afraid of, he wondered at. Daphne and Cian had given Rosemary the gift of fear for Christmas recently. To do that they had given everyone a gift that started a small and harmless hallucination of that which the individual feared. An interval started between this and the next story so the two conversed.

"That is the fairytale creature that caused Tiamos to scream that Christmas? That was a fairytale? Limbo's fairytales are more like urban legends to me," stated Ma.

Jacob nodded, not noticing that the play was going into an intermission for a brief moment before starting another story involving Heegh's initial falling from good and the path he took from there on.

“Well, there are variations on the tale. Some versions of it are more dark and twisted, told to older reapers and people that want to be disturbed and frightened, or have a sense of paranoia when they're alone. That whole wanting a good scare thing. There's a more tamer version of it where it's not as detailed, and more censored for the younger crowds. It's changed a bit too, where he's just a phantom boogeyman, or a bad man that practiced dark magic and paid the price for it instead of being fleshed out as a serial killer. Tiamos probably didn't get to into details at the time because of Black being present at the time or something.”

Jacob also thought it was interesting that the people chose to depict the killer that became the Toe Eater in a fashion that was eerily similar to Galantros somewhat, at least visually. Stories never really specified the exact look of the reaper, or they varied greatly from tale to tale. He almost wondered if there was some sort of statement in that, but didn't speak it aloud. There were still a few radicals here and there that were parnaoid or fearful of Galantros turning back into his massive demon form again and rampaging. Mentally, he shrugged. He would just chalk it up to coincidence for now unless it was proven otherwise; no need to jump the gun.

"That child has seen more real life horrors than someone of her nature should have. She's mischievousness at times yes, but it's not really hurtful or mean spirited. She will back off if she realizes she's gone too far with it. I'd be surprised if this puppet show would have really frightened her or disturbed her beyond the slight resemblance to Galantros the villain had, but I've seen plenty of reapers who wear blue at least once in a while with yellow eyes. She might feel relieved for the violence of a fairytale over real violence. She at least used to know the difference between a story and reality. Have you ever heard Rosemary read a Brother's Grim fairytale to her? Many famous fairytales are gruesome and she used to like them. Though… I don't know if she does anymore. I try to give her privacy." In short he thought certain people babied her a little too much, without really saying it. Most vampires have some form or small degree of being able to read the surface thoughts of others without trying hard, though not at the level of a true telepath turned vampire. Ma Jianshen has been mostly blocking BlackMN's thoughts out and giving her privacy of mind.

“The Brother's Grim fairytales remind me of some old stories from my home world, ages ago, come to think of it,” he said answering the question in a roundabout way. One of the newer things he had started doing was group reading books for pleasure. Once or twice a week, sometimes three, BlackMN joined them for a reading session in bed. Rosemary did most of the reading at first, usually from a Brother’s Grim tale or Hans Christian Anderson or some other popular tale of the time, but then Veni gained interest to read sometimes and then after enough sessions had urged Jacob to do some of the reading as well. She fell asleep most times before leaving, but that was the point for her wasn’t it; to be lulled to sleep?

It was really a simple act, but he realized he had grown fond of it now that he thought of it. It was something like a family would do. Veni’s vampire son broke his thoughts with his next question, "I hear that there are many similar worlds like mine, but in different dimensions. You were from one of those correct? Would you say that your home was more advanced than mine 3000 years ago or would be more advanced today if it still existed? I think I mean its general timeline ahead of ours. I haven't really looked into it much and I don't know anything on the topic. Would I have had a doppelganger and exist in any of them too?"

"Yes, I was from one of several different earth like planets, before it was made a dead world. It's hard to say how advanced my world would have become today, or to compare it to other worlds. Some advance very quickly in their technology and civilizations, other seem to go about it a bit more slowly. I think we were in a pseudo medieval-type time period compared to most worlds at the time, and were attempting to stamp out magic as much as possible.

As for doppelgangers, that's actually quite a possibility. You never know what species, gender, or whatever you'll be in another dimension or such though with all the variations. The odd thing about that is, some sort of force, whether cosmic or heavenly, *usually* keeps us from meeting ourselves. Though I've heard that Pyro has met a double once. I think some strange theory about Limbo being unique prevents it from having any alternate versions, but that might not extend to its people. As in, the people could have doubles but in different worlds in other dimensions, instead of an alternate Limbo.

It's rather interesting and odd, I'll have to ask Pyro about it when I see him next. I seem to recall the story going that his double was a hybrid of reaper and human, with something about being on a planet with reversed gravity. Believe their world was hollowed out, and they lived on the inside? I'm not sure how it worked.”

Ma Jianshen's face seemed to brighten up a little at what Jacob said at first and he turned his head away in thought, but then it lost it as he pondered it and became confused. "There being one Limbo makes perfect sense. From my understanding there is one heaven and one hell. Their main portals of entry are in Limbo so there is one Limbo. On that same thought there should be only one Jiluzix if there is one Hell. I don't understand the other part you just said. How can one have a doppelganger that's a different gender or species? I can understand their being human me instead of vampire me or even a werecreature me because that is a chance encounter in ones lifetime and one isn't born that way... but a girl me or better yet a lizard girl me that is born that way and not considered human? How could that really be my double in another dimension even if our personalities and interests somehow matched? I was thinking more along the lines of similar mes or a world in where Veni's brother is the one turned into a vampire and Veni died a long time ago. I don't see how a lizard girl or a half reaper for that matter can be a true doppelganger to me or Pyro."

"Well... okay, maybe not exactly doppelgangers, though on some worlds they're a bit moreso like you described. They wouldn't have all the drastic changes in one being, just maybe one or two major ones I think. It's more of a... ...well.. a "what if I was born as this?" type of scenario sometimes, instead of "what if this happened instead of that?", or "born here, instead of there? And then I think there's variations on the variations of doppels, as in, what if the doppelganger had a doppel, and they had one. It gets to a point where it doesn't match up with the "original" I would assume, but with some other ones it would moreso. I'm not an expert in this field."

Somewhere off behind the two unseen, at that point in time, a man that bore a very striking resemblance to Jacob walked by completely unnoticed. Were anyone to compare him to the Jacob Merak currently before Ma, they would find that this one had barely any form of magic ability, save for a longevity of life spell that was cast on him ages ago. That, and he had a bit of a handlebar moustache, and looked only slightly older.

"I think I understand Merak bìxià," said Ma who sounded sincere but his use of the title was meant to be a stab at the necromancer for the discussion had completely confused him. He turned his gaze back to the show that had just started up again before Jacob could protest his use of the word ‘your majesty’.

The second story went on to tell the tale of how Heegh fell from grace and became Satan, Inazuma’s interference of many of his plans, Kaze’s involvement, and some nameless characters that they happened to know. There were more deaths and vivid imagery of gore than in the previous tale. Jacob smirked at parts of the story, knowing who the great demon was that Inazuma had convinced to not destroy one of the great city states in Limbo. Ma had been more enchanted by the mechanics and effects used than in the story itself. No real magic was used here, not even for the flames when so many performers in Limbo seemed to rely on magic for their performance as a general rule. He knew if he wanted to, he could dazzle an audience with his movements but in this case it would have only been because he was a vampire and his body allowed him to move impossibly fast or slow to most people. His body hadn't moved at all during the performance. He was so still one could easily forget he was next to them. He was like an animatronic whose eyes were the only thing that moved. Once the show was over the still statue moved and Ma said to Jacob, "my that was a bit less kid friendly," the vampire commented on the more graphic deaths depicted in this show compared to the other one. The crowd began to scatter for other things and the tips were given.

As he thought on some of the names, he got out a piece of paper and drew traditional Chinese symbols and wrote Kaze, Fung (which is the Cantonese way of saying it), and Wind under one and the other he wrote Inazuma, Din, and Lightning. "Did you know that Kaze and Inazuma are Japanese for wind and lightning?”

"No, I was not familiar with that fact about their names... I mostly only know demon tongues, with a few other languages here and there," the Other admitted.

“That’s right,” Ma said remembering he had basically stated that on his language knowledge earlier. “Rosemary must have been given Kaze's gifts, but no one really knows where Kaze is right? Does Rosemary even know how to do half of what Kaze was depicted to do?"

"I am not entirely sure of Kaze's abilities, so I do not know how Rosemary would compare to the former.
I have to admit, this does idly make me wonder if Eztli's name has a translation we're unaware of, or some other names. I know that some Limboian words and names somehow translate as other words in some languages rarely. If I recall, Eztli in Limboian is an old name and word that compounds several words, meaning basically "My precious one", or "Precious thing". Sometimes even "Thing/One close to my heart". His family really cared for him to have named him that."

“Father would be choice if we wanted someone to possibly know that off the top of his head," said Ma who pulled out his little device and did a search on a baby naming website on the Gaia internet and grinned when he saw the result for Eztli's name and showed it to Jacob. It was the Aztec word for blood. "Do you know if your name meant something other than supplanter on your home world?"

"As far as I know, Jacob only meant the Biblical meaning as well back home. Kinda odd that Eztli's name means blood in another language, but something else in Limboian. Oh... I do know that my last name of Merak means something back from my home world, usually because sometimes it was used partially as an insult due to my magical ties. "He who is whimsical" or "Is of outlandish ways" ...Does your name mean anything?"

Jacob had just confirmed the existence of a similar holy book in his realm to Ma that caused the people to come to beliefs that led them to commit the same persecutions of the one in his home world. "So that's why you were looked down on... You are a whimsical supplanter? My name has several meanings. It is a slight play on words. The base meaning of Ma Jianshen means "divine sword stance."” He wrote down on a paper with nice calligraphy the symbols 馬 劍 神 (not sure if they should be flipped).

"The last symbol, shen, has a number of meanings," he pointed at it with the pen while ignoring the mannerism of it being rude to point. He lived too long outside his culture for him to care sometimes when he thought certain mannerisms mattered not. "It can be translated to spirit, divine, or supernatural to name only a couple of words it can be translated to. The middle symbol, jian, means sword, and the symbol for my surname, ma, means horse, but is often used to mean a stance when combined with other words. Very common surname and said very similarly in mandarin. It is odd that the translator couldn’t translate this. My name is in Mandarin instead of Cantonese. I thought Ma Jianshen sounded better than Ma Gim-san." He said spirit, divine, supernatural, sword, horse, and stance in English. "In my case there is a deeper implied meaning to this name. It implies that my posture or body position and thus my movements are supernatural or as graceful as a divine being. Thus I am indicating that I am not human with my own name."

"Huh, now that's pretty neat. I really should study other languages besides the few I already know. The translators might make it a little easier, but could still be an interesting hobby and task to take up, especially in cases where the translator still slightly waivers."

There was relative silence for a moment as they walked for a bit, Jacob taking note of a few more lively plants in a garden like section of the park. One of them was wrapping its vines around a crystal light pole, blossoming and unblossoming its flowers in an attempt to attract insects for pollination. That brought back something to Jacob's mind, the several plants Ma had at his home. "So... That tea plant you have, and others I saw earlier tonight. Do you have a bit of a green thumb like Githar does?"

"I wouldn't say like Githar. He grows them for just hobby, soothing for him mostly. He chooses his plants at random with a few of them actually useful for basic magic charm ingredients. I typically grow them for visual purposes. If I didn't think they make a space look nicer or have some purpose for them, I probably wouldn't bother because of all the light they require. Most are a little bothersome to me because of that. Eventually I may set up a garden of nice plants outside on the roof and not worry about the light they need. The main reason I have those plants in the house is because I don't want stray animals marking or relieving themselves on them. Another plant was jasmine which I infused some of the leaves with and that plant can also be found where I'm from. You were more impressed by the tea because you knew I made it from the plants instead of from a tea bag or loose leaves from the store weren't you?"

"Yes, I was. I typically just get my tea from the stores, not straight off the plant like that."

He turned his head towards Jacob and gave a slight smile. "That is enough reason to have them. They're good for entertaining guests." His attention turned back to the plant whose flower opened and closed faster than flowers open and close for day and night. It was an interesting trait much like the closing of venus fly traps. The flower actually seemed to attract a couple of large insects finally, strange ones that were unlike some that Ma had seen on Gaia earth. One apparently had three, maybe four heads? This particular creature made an almost musical, choir like humming sound. The flower stopped gesturing once the bugs came near to perch, the multi-headed one enthusiastically thrusting its faces into the pollen of the plant to feed on nectar.

Ma's head bolted upright and leaped up suddenly out of the human's vision and came back down with a feathery winged snake that was wrapping around his arm. He stared it in the eyes to trance it as he descended so it would cease its panic at being nabbed suddenly. Once the creature was calmed he extended his arm so that Jacob could get a good look at the winged snake.

Jacob got a closer look at the flying lizard and noticed something interesting about it; namely, the eyes. "Well that's slightly rare for that species. It actually has eyes. The majority of them don't typically have eyeballs." Once calmed, and not as panicky, the lizard chirped, hissing a little bit as it examined Ma's face. Coiling back up towards Ma's shoulder, it seemed to hunch over as if perched there, resting a bit. "I believe you've made a friend... are snakes your familiar by any chance?"

"No," said the long haired one with a longing sigh. "I don't have a familiar. I cannot willfully summon them to me like the others. I like how reptiles are cool to the touch without being slimy and that they need another source of heat to be warm like me.” If Jacob didn’t know that he didn't have a strong connection to any animals it made him wonder, “what sort of things do your powers automatically pick up on for creatures like me?"

Flicking its tongue out suddenly, the snake quickly uncoiled a moment or two later, diving after the bugs in the flowers for a late night snack. The several headed bug was its apparent victim as something that sounded musical seemed to waiver out in its tone and pitch, like a dying instrument....

"Well, reptiles just might be your familiar someday. That creature back there seemed to take a liking to you pretty well." Having finished with its meal, said creature flew back towards Ma unexpectedly, coiled and "perched" around and on his shoulder again and chirped for a little while, ruffling through its feathers for a moment or two, before flying off again. "Okay, now that isn't something seen every day. Especially after eating, they just usually go do their own thing for a while. Anyway...

“Automatically, I can sense certain things such as roughly how long a being or spirit has been deceased or undead, the potency of certain powers if it pertains to their being not alive, and as of a while ago, being able to determine the type of being in my head that they are, or rather getting a good general sense and feel for it. Even if I don't know what species one is, I'd be able to identify it if I saw one of that kind again. Here lately I've been trying to focus on figuring out more and more on being able to naturally pick up on slight weaknesses and strengths as well. I figure in certain situations that could be pretty handy. I can do this on a small level, but I figure the more I 'train' it, the more potent it'll become; like exercising a muscle. It may even branch off to other things."

Ma smiled and nodded. "Any is better than none," he said about having a familiar. "Forgive me, but I don't think I understood all that.... do you mean that you can detect the strength of an ability if they gained it because of being dead, but not if it was theirs while alive? Weaker ones could have potent powers, but be weak themselves... is it the potency of powers you're sensing or that of the creature? Also, I'm not saying it isn't good to know the little weaknesses and strengths of potential opponents especially if you merely want to stop them without harming too much, but aren't you able to stop any of us dead in our tracks if you focus on it a little?"

"I probably should've clarified a little.. I can detect the strength if they gained it because of their being dead, but not if it was innate to them while alive usually. There are sometimes exceptions, probably because I do practice a few other magics on the side just a little. It's the potency of powers that I sense usually, though I'm working more on being able to detect if they're frail or not.

Typically, I could stop most dead. But there always will be, and have been exceptions. Like for instance, undead made or summoned from a more powerful necromancer than I, or some that have some sort of protective magic around them that's difficult for me to counter. Sometimes magic can also have chaotic effects, which throw things out the window and breaks the rules..."

Ma had a slight puzzled look at what Jacob was saying. He thought Jacob's senses were backwards. Normally he would pick up if a being was powerful first, not potency of powers or even powers. Maybe he understood wrong. He could have tried to view his surface thoughts for better understanding, but he wouldn’t dare do it. "I would have thought physical condition would have been easier to pick up over possessing strong abilities. It's what I detect first in humans. But with all the powerful beings I assume you normally run into, you've probably been more concerned with how deadly their skills are. I can't say I have much knowledge when it comes to magic. Does magic work like qi and sort of flow through you and you concentrate it into your arms when you cast spells? Are most spell required to go through the arms or does it make it a lot harder to cast it without the arms?"

"It sort of does. Most individuals tend to concentrate it into their main appendages when they're spell casting. If they lose those appendages, it can be more difficult to spell cast, but not impossible to learn other ways, like way of mouth, or pure will and concentration."

Ma smiled slightly with the corners of his mouth barely moving up as he thought of this. The smirk was more in his eyes. "I meant for you, Jacob."

Jacob paused, and then couldn't help but smirk a little and chuckle a bit himself. Considering all the times he's been maimed, injured, de-limbed, and all sorts of horrible things... "Right, well.. It gets tricky for me when I lose my arms sometimes, but I can still manage without them if I really have to. I'm just more efficient with them is all." He wondered why Ma wanted to know. He glanced at him and had the distinct feeling that the vampire had ill-intentions for him. It didn't feel like he was going to attack him at the moment, but more that he desired to do something potentially evil to him.

The vampire felt a little tension leave him as he hadn't been sure how the necromancer was going to respond to what he had asked, but a potentially evil thought had crossed his mind; he wanted to strike Jacob's arms and see if he couldn't disrupt spells. "Probably takes you at least a couple seconds to recover and switch modes." He then realized he was starting to notice the pumping blood of others around him more than he was moments ago. His hearing and blood scent began to focus more on Jacob's as he was closest. He thought this strange since he should have been good the rest of the night, lest someone bled profusely near him. Then he remembered something Veni had told him. "Are you hungry?"

Part 7: The Walk Back
Starts with this post on page 8 and ends on on page 9

"Well, I'm not absolutely starving or anything, but I could eat I think. I just started getting a tad hungry," Jacob replied.

"Ah… that could explain why my body is feeling greedy," Ma said and led the way towards the exit of the park and down the other side of the street that they had entered on. A bit down that side of the street they'd run into the individuals offering their own actual blood while hooked up to special devices and of course other foodstuffs. He wanted to ask Jacob what sort of things his powers picked up on of himself. Did the necromancer consider his power potent? He knew it was one of the reasons he survived the incident that left so many dead. He hadn’t wanted to die, no, but he wasn’t proud that he survived while those he considered stronger perished. He also knew, never fully realizing the potential until recently, it grew stronger with exposure that involved usage and the examining of others and he had potent ones twice recently; Dieamos and Jacob. But he wasn't sure he wanted to hear that answer and that it was likely Jacob would ask him the same question...though he had shared a little of what he himself picked up on earlier in demonstrating that he could pick up on past hurts when he had asked to hold the other's hand for a moment.

“Heh, my apologies then. Food is probably a good idea then.”

Glancing around at the different foods being served, he decided that as much as he liked the chesni meat, he would avoid it for now. It was a rather unhealthy meal, and he'd rather have something different anyway. Finding something that caught his eye, he got a couple of meat buns, filled with some sort of savory meat covered in sauce. He wouldn't think he would need to eat both of them, but just in case he got both because he didn't want to be draining any vampire connected to him due to even a slight bit of hunger on his part. He also got a bottle of something Ma noticed was called “Nutri-Juice”, that came in a variety of colors, presumably different flavors... Jacob's was tinted yellowish-orange, advertising some sort of foreign fruit he hadn't heard of. He may have heard of the Nutri-Juice, but that particular fruit neither was familiar with. It was on a whim that Jacob chose it.

Taking a sip from his drink, Jacob paused a moment and considered the flavor. “Somewhat like sweet tea, but with a citrus hint mixed with... I want to say a slightly sour kithos berry taste. It's odd. Not bad, just different.”

Interestingly enough, a public vehicle passed them by with an advertisement for “Nutri-Juice” plastered on its side with a holographic type display. “Drink Nutri-Juice!,” Jacob and Ma was able to read, where Ma was able to read the rest rather quickly, “A nutritional, healthy, revitalizing fluid balanced with healing agents and the materials needed to rebuild! Guaranteed to quench thirst, refresh the body, and revitalize the mind!” In smaller print, as a disclaimer, Ma also was able to make out. “Please note that Nutri-Juice does not claim to be able to rejuvenate the spirit, as the soul is not our field of expertise!” He said the whole text out loud even after the vehicle had passed out of his vision for Jacob’s benefit, but he said it in a very clear, concise, and boisterous tone that mimicked how many commercials presented their product. The only thing it lacked was the hand motions to go with it.

Blinking at the oddly timed ad-vehicle, Jacob took a bite of his food and snorted at Ma’s sudden change in timbre. It was back to normal as if nothing had happened when he commented on what he had just read. "That is probably one of those....ah....fads that claim to be so good for you," said Ma taking a few seconds to find the right word. He didn't start walking and let Jacob eat.

The necromancer noticed out of the corner of his eye the “blood vendors” section, in particular the one where healthy people were offering themselves to be fed off of while hooked up to rejuvenation machines. Chewing and swallowing his bite, he commented on it. “Hmm, looks like they improved the machinery of those auto-healing infusers lately...”

He followed the Other's gaze and saw what he was talking about, but it didn't make sense to him... if it was meant to be a conversation starter Ma hadn't exactly seen or knew how they functioned before he first saw them. "I wouldn't know. What do you think of the concept of that?"

"It's different than the blood bags I'll say. It does provide it from the source I suppose so it's not necessarily a bad thing, considering the machines keep the people alert and healed for the most part, unless they overdo it for most of the day. As far as I know, they also check the blooder for any sorts of illness of course, and I believe for certain magics if they would affect certain blood drinking species. I think it's a good thing overall, probably not without its flaws somewhere, but...." Jacob eyed one leech person finishing up their meal, the individual quietly stifling a small burp and thanking the blooder as the donor was called apparently, leaving payment and tip behind. For the most part it looked professional, though sometimes depending on certain species, idle chit chat was made, or the rare occasional minor flirt happened. The chit chat mostly happened with species that had more than one mouth or used something else of theirs to drink blood with. "What's your thought on it?"

Ma was looking at the things with slight disgust, but didn't verbally express that he found many of the blood sucking and food eating species to be disgusting in some ways. "The idea is good, but I dislike that they're out in the open for everyone to see. Even at restaurants you get the illusion of booth privacy. I'm used to doing such things away from others. Would you pay a lot of money to drink a superb drink from a cup that has been recently drank from countless strangers without being cleaned? They charge like they're gas stations because those machines keep track of how much is taken. The cheapest they charge $2 an ounce which is $16 a cups worth for the reapers who's easier to force heal, which is probably the equivalent to a snack for me. Besides several of my adult students work at these and I do not risk some controversy of taking advantage of my position." A teacher has to watch their actions and he didn't think feeding off them would help his reputation. Even if they're adults and it is part of their job he feared it might still be frowned upon like sexual relationships between student and teacher.

"Yes, there is a lack of privacy and such I agree. And no, I wouldn't drink from something that was sipped on from numerous strangers without cleansing... though the machines do sanitize the feeding sites I hear, but that's besides the point." Jacob quietly took another bite of his food and swallowed it before continuing; idly realizing he was gradually feeling less hungry as he ate. He hadn't been too hungry to begin with, but it was good he noted that he got food when he did. If Ma hadn't made the suggestion, he probably would have wanted to get something to eat soon enough himself. "I suppose the way they create those blood bags makes it somehow cheaper to manufacture."

Ma gave Jacob an incredulous look at what Jacob said about the machines cleaning a feeding site when he knew a vampire's saliva did that already and the blood bags somehow being cheaper to manufacture. "How many people do you think are willing or could mentally stand to do this sort of thing with all the possible overgrown leech species out there?" He paused. He was referring to himself too and wondered why he used the term "overgrown leech." Was it because one of the customers looked like a leech? No, he didn't think so. He had the oddest feeling he had been called that before and that's where he picked up the term, but couldn't quite place the source. He had no memory of his momentary captivity with Heegh who had called him that after raping some information from his mind. He continued in a more calm voice, but Jacob felt something melancholy in the words, but he didn't feel any reason for it from the undead man. "The bags are manufactured in bulk with minimal need for people. You just need enough people to keep the process going and test it. You don't have to pay the bags a salary. Most of those blood suckers don't know that these people work three days a week at most for about 4 or so hours a shift. They make twice the amount as someone who works 40 hours a week at minimum wage plus tip."

It was then that someone either spotted Ma or Ma allowed himself to be seen as the word, "Sifu," was shouted. Whatever melancholy was in him, it melted away as kind loving expression on the vampire's face replaced it at the sound of that voice. "And this one told me so," said the vampire and walked towards the one who spoke to him. "My you are working hard, Eztli," said Ma with a smile when he said that name. "How do you do?"

"Holdin up here fine... is he with you?" Eztli may have had some reaper in him, but he looked more like a dark skinned human than reaper. In fact he was about 95% human; one of his great great grandparents or possibly great great great grandparent being the reaper. The most obvious trait he retained, besides darker skin, was a faint luminescence in the eyes which was barely noticeable and Jacob had to look at them directly to even see it. He was also a weak empath. His face was less angular than most reapers. His jaw line was that smooth v shape that most Europeans have that most Asians want that gave him a more youthful appearance. His hair was short, spiked, and had highlights at the tips. It very well could have been his natural hair color given the diversity of the realm. Ma had known him for about 7 of the 8 years he had been mostly living in Limbo and has watched him grow from preadolescents to young adult. The vampire had started off drifting to learn from other schools within the realm, but decided to teach as well about the time he had met the lad.

"Pardon me. This is Jacob Merak. He is... a family friend." Ma paused there because he didn't know what to say Jacob was to him and settled on what he thought was the safest answer. "I just showed him Grelot Park and we were heading back. And this is Eztli," once again the amused look, "a very promising student. He helped paint and set up my place."

"Nice to meet you! Say you have the same name as that spook chaser! He chased some poltergeist out of my friend's place. Got egged pretty good before he got the thing out."

"Did he now?" Said Ma smiling and though he wasn't looking at Jacob, Jacob probably knew he was smiling at the thought of the ghostly terror bombing him with eggs.

"Uhhuh. My friend said he was in a "rotten" mood when he left." Ma tried not to feel embarrassed at his puns. If there was one minor thing he didn’t care for about Eztli, it would be his sense of humor.

Though he tried to be somewhat discrete about it, Jacob did give a bit of a off to the side look and attempted not to clear his throat. He remembered that incident though, it was the poltergeist he had "chased" off before he met Moor'teis and that horrible business with the illusionist demon. Interesting that he remembered Moor'teis first. That particular spirit, though powerful, was at least harmless to its "victims", just a touch on the mischievous side. The one before that though was particularly nasty, and he was lucky he was able to bind most of its power and that throwing eggs was one of the worse things in the way of collateral damage it had managed before things got bad. It did however try to mess with Jacob's emotions a fair amount and gave him past sensations that he had no fondness to recollect.

Jacob collected himself rather quickly, and realizing that if this current Eztli had any reaper in him, like it seemed possibly, that he might have detected his emotional state through empathy. He had become slightly flustered, and just for a very split second surprised and irrationally annoyed at the memory more than anything of that ghost. He then returned the greeting to Eztli who had indeed found his reaction to the mention of the poltergeist strange.

"Funny coincidence. Nice to meet you as well, Eztli." Jacob quietly reflected on how uncommon, but not necessarily excessively rare that name was in Limbo. Another example would be Galantros, though a tad bit more common than Eztli. "Well... I'd imagine having a spirit smash some eggs in your face would "spoil" your mood rather quickly.."

"Jacob? Jacob Merak? Grstk sh'fv..” The rest is almost considered a strange sort of high and low pitch variances of gibberish that would be difficult to put into text. It was an uncommon enough language also that it took the translation devices a moment to decipher them. What's translated is what other translation devices would see, as Ma's are of a cheaper, 1 language variety. “...to see again since last saw, Never thought Mr. necromancer!"

Jacob blinked and looked behind him. A strange, black shrouded demon floated there, somewhat reptilian with a multitude of horns, and spidery-like jointed legs on its lower half twitching. She, apparently as the voice though strange was female, held in thick muscular arms a miniature version of herself, a small child that was resting.

"Uhm.. Excuse me a second, sorry." Jacob responded in kind for a brief second in that similar language with his own tone of voice, which was kind of amusing and disturbing at the same time, until finally the devices figured out the language. A reaper's mind would've figured it out much quicker. "sh'vigrxxyn so catpaw hammer, question mark? My, De'shivak, you have a little one now. It certainly has been a while."

"Yes, my little Sithos. He's two. I'm sorry Jacob, I mostly wanted to see if that really was you since your face has changed a fair amount. I can't chat long. Do you still live where you did previously?"

Eztli said to Ma, "he is the spook chaser isn't he, Sifu?" Ma nodded with a sort of haughty amusement in his eyes.

"My friend said his body was messed up and he smelt of blood,” Eztli said and Ma sort of shrugged it off with a wave of his hand and indicated he would explain that later if asked. Well a very condensed version that he didn’t feel would reveal much beyond what someone could easily surmise.

Jacob nodded at what De'shivak had said. "Yes, you should come visit again, though some days I'm not always there... the others are though, and they probably miss you."

"Of course. I'll catch up with you all later, besides you seem occupied at the moment. I just wanted to say hello. Sorry for the intrusion! Take care Jacob... you seem more well, keep at it."

Jacob waved his fare ware to De'shivak, then turned his attention back to the others and gave an apologetic shrug. Eztli looked from his teacher to the necromancer. “How do you know him?”

Ma sighed and said, "it's a long story Eztli." Once again a small almost mischievous smile formed at the corner of his lips at saying the name. "I'll just say he knows Githar and his friends. Many of Githar's friends are friends of my family."

"...why do you look amused every time you say my name tonight?" He recognized that look on his Sifu’s face. It was the one he had when he thought something funny.

"I looked up your name to see if there was one similar to it on my home world and found out there is and it means blood..."

"Haha! How funny." Ma nodded once again and Jacob gave his apologetic shrug. "Hey spook chaser Mr. Merak, I am sorry if I insulted you with what I said earlier. My friend and their family were grateful."

“No offense taken, Eztli. You can just call me Jacob. I know they were grateful, I made sure I didn't take out my mood on them... it's just that the spirit infesting their home was a particularly nasty one. Poltergeists can be either very minor things, or very disturbed, cruel creatures.”

Meanwhile Ma was watching the vendors and said, "ah Eztli I had better go before they start charging me for your time. See you in two nights unless we run into each other again and before you mention it, no.” Eztli often tried to tempt Ma into being one of his patrons. “And to the other thing you'll likely ask me after that, maybe." (You know what I can’t remember what this was… it is either if he could stay that night or teach him how to resist his touch soon for the minor things when it flared up slightly without Ma being aware of it.) He picked out one of the blood bag goods probably as a way to make up for taking Eztli's time though there wasn't anyone in line for him at the moment, but this could have been due to them being there and talking to him. He paid for it, and started to leave with the free hand on the curve of his back. It was due to them being there. For once they were walking away another vampire went up to Eztli. Ma’s protective rage briefly piqued when he saw that Other one on Eztli. His outer appearance didn’t change though he inhaled and exhaled slowly. Once out of ear shot of his student, the vampire looked at Jacob with a serious face... "What are you to me?"

The question caught Jacob only partially off guard. “Well... That's a good question. I'd say...Hmm.” He thought a moment, wanting to try to be sincere and honest in what he said. “I suppose family friend sort of fits? I wanted to take this time in getting better acquainted with you. There's parts of me that still attempt to recluse myself, and I've really been making efforts to do away with a lot of that. I'd rather not come off as stand-offish or aloof anymore like I used to long in the past.” Jacob thought family friend sort of fit, but wasn't sure a closer idea of friendship or relationship would be fitting just yet because he didn't know what Ma thought exactly himself. That want to be accepted that almost all people have it would seem. For a moment, Ma could detect a slight hint of nervousness in Jacob: his heart pace increased a bit and his palms started to sweat a little.

"Your effort is admirable. Living a long time makes one more aloof because of everyone having a much shorter lifespan than you and dying or also in my case...because I'm a vampire." He pulled out the circular coin like object, crafted from some sort of animal bone with arcane symbols on it that Jacob gave him for Christmas. The item gave off faint calming energy that Jacob bestowed it with that the vampire could feel. It now had wire wove around the edges to hold it in place for either a chain or to become a shirt pen; depending on how the vampire felt. At the moment he had a black necklace string on it. "It is a good gift," he said and hid it in his clothes again.

Some of the tension left Jacob. He was relieved that this son of Veni’s seemed to accept him in some way, though he knew not how but at least knew he wasn’t rejected. But Jacob wasn't just what he answered with to the vampire. It was a nice thing to tell Others but the guy could boss him, the undead, around with mere words. Ma remained silent for a while as they walked along and didn't say anything else until they were approaching his place again. "What will you do if the original head of this family isn't dead?"

Jacob frowned a bit as he considered this. He recalled what he had been told of the head of the family from Veni, and a fair amount of it hadn't been pleasant... He thought about his answer for a second before he spoke. "I'll say it like this... I will do just about whatever it will take to protect those I care about, Ma."

The implications of that were fairly clear. In other words, if the original head of the family threatened his precious Veni or Rosemary in anyway, or any other he had come to know/or they knew and cared for, it would be a problem dealt with, and harshly. Jacob was more than likely well aware this wasn't without consequence as well, whatever course of action he took. He would make sure he could shoulder the responsibilities afterwards.

"I see..." said Ma with a blank face because Jacob had basically said he'd kill her if he could without damaging the rest of them from what he understood.

"I suppose it depends. If the original head threatens to do anything that would cause hurt and pain to any of you, I would take action. Worst case scenario I could hope for would be to.. incapacitate somehow, if things got that drastic. I'm cautious about any more severe action than that, that it could have consequences unintended to others. Otherwise if I knew for certain..." And as much as Jacob wouldn't like to admit it normally, he did have that advantage of the undead arts on his side, making him vastly dangerous to most dead or undead individuals. He would certain use that to the most of his potential in this case, pretty much no holding back.

The normally collected seeming individual bit into the creature he bought in part to help uplift and hide the sour feelings he had. It helped a little as blood usually did, but it was still disappointing in ways from the creature. The warmth, pulse, and taste were still marvelous but it lacked memories, feelings, experience, and other little spices that made a human more desirable in which he craved. Jacob saw the creature, that wasn’t supposed to feel pain, contract in the ways it could as if it were in pain. Usually the vampire seemed unaware of this, but the necromancer wondered if he did it on purpose this time.

Part 8: The Test
Starts on page 9

By the time they were back he had finished his little drink, unlocked and opened the door letting Jacob in first. He shut the door behind him when he entered. He sat the still living pulsing food creature down, walked to the area with the matted floor, and took off his shoes. "Will you let me test if magic works like qi?"

Jacob nodded... "Sure, I suppose."

He was a little bothered however by how Ma seemed to take what he said. He guessed that saying you would intend to kill one's former head of the family if they posed a threat, even if it was under the reason of them causing harm and pain to the ones you cared for, it would still cause feelings of discomfort and unease. Certainly it wasn't his intent to upset the vampire, but he had to be honest... he would protect those close to him with everything he had. He decided he had to ask what was on Ma's mind then. "...May I ask what you're thinking?"

"Afterwards, unless you order me to do it now or refuse this experiment if I don't speak my mind," said Ma retracting his claws a little, looking at them as if they were offensive when in truth he didn’t normally mind them. He could withdraw them nowhere near as much or as quickly as Veni could. In truth he was afraid Jacob wouldn’t allow him to test his theory if he said what he was thinking. Really he knew no one else he could ask.

Jacob responded with, "alright, afterwards then. I'm not forcing you, but I do want to know what it is you're thinking."

Ma nodded. "This shouldn't hurt much." He stepped in front of Jacob, spread his arms on either side and struck Jacob in both arms at the same time. His hands moved with precision and a speed whose movements were hard to see, pushing in various spots. "This is what I do to myself when I feel like I am...ah… having an off day with my own abilities. Can you still focus your magic through your arms? If not, cast it like you normally would when you cannot."

Jacob observed his arms after being struck, flexing his hands out a bit as he prepared a spell. It actually stung quite a bit. What Ma had probably meant was that this shouldn’t hurt as much as many of the other things he had suffered. He found it took a good amount of effort just to make an obviously harmless necrotic "flame" of energy appear in his hands, having to put a good amount of his focus and will into it, and idly wondered out loud how much more it would have taken if he wanted to do anything more advanced just using his arms and hands. Just for curiosity's sake, he tried doing the same "fire energy in hands" spell using word of mouth and more mental will power and found it a bit easier, but since he was trying to still focus it onto his hands and subconsciously through his arms, it was still a touch tricky. "That's interesting. If I were relying only on my arms and hands to cast spells, especially important ones, I would be having a very difficult and trying time. In fact, I think larger spells would be completely interrupted or halted. As it is, it was tough just doing the little energy "flame"."

"Now do what you'd normally do when you can't cast from your hands." Ma observed not just what Jacob did with a studying gaze, but also at how his energy flowed as he did that; sort of like watching blood flow in the veins. "Can we see if I can make it difficult for you to cast a spell?" he asked and when Jacob agreed he said to cast it again and the vampire watched Jacob's movements again and tried to sense the energy and started to strike him in an attempt to block his ability to release that energy from his body.

Thinking ahead, Jacob decided to do a much fancier but still harmless version of his showy necro flame, just in case something went haywire, since Ma wanted something a bit more complex than the simple flame trick itself. When Ma struck him in just the right way, Jacob grunted slightly, feeling the magic energies within him react in such a peculiar way that it "hiccuped"... sending colorful flares of necro energy throughout the room for a brief moment before he could get it fully under control. It certainly did stop whatever spell he was casting, but the excess energy had to go somewhere. "Well... that could be useful in stopping something in an emergency. But I probably would use it carefully. More dangerous magics, especially if chaotic, could certainly have disastrous results."

The effect actually wasn’t what Ma hoped for and a look of thoughtful disappointment was on his face. He was trying to redirect it to go back within, but the energy still escaped. The vampire’s own tended to retreat inward when he did things like that. Magical energy must be different in some ways. An interrupted holy spell could still do some damage. "I will knock them out instead of what I just did. I wanted to know if keeping the energy inside the body could be done. Maybe I have to do something different, but another night."

Ma put his hand on his head and slid it back across his hair. "As promised my thoughts.... I don't think everyone would agree to you killing Nafretiri Bixia if she is still alive... She is no doubt going to be furious to find that Veni is willing to be ruled over by someone else, a human of all creatures, and would likely lash out as any ruler who returned found their direct subordinate following someone else, willingly for that matter, other than them when they expected them to carry out as usual while they were gone. I know he was doing his role of protecting us the best way he thought possible, but she may not know or accept that. Yes she can cause us pain and harm, but well... look at me and others in our family. Many of us have powers focused on causing pain and harm and several of us aren't like me or Veni or Rosemary with their abilities. It can affect them mentally I think… Nafretiri Bixia's power is similar to Rosemary's with the main difference being that she focused on feeding that aura over blood while Rosemary focuses on blood over the aura. This means she kept many of us in check with fear and mentally and physically painful punishments. I think some of them need it or else they'd go rogue and terrorize anyone and everyone. Her qualities weren't completely bad. She was adamant about protecting us from outsiders. She had a general suspicion against all Other vampires and she kept them away and protected us up till the last time I saw her.”

The last time Ma had seen her she was fighting off strange creatures, various demons from Hell he later learned, that appeared from somewhere within. They had not come from the outside, but within one of the rooms of their own home. No, not one of the rooms, they came from Nefretiri’s room. She had urged him to get out and, since he had made it to Dan and Daisy’s room successfully rescuing them, ordered him to protect them the best he could. He had done just that and got them to the surface where vile wholesome sunshine greeted them and the few others that escaped. “What I think is this; if you are just a family friend of mine I don't think most of what the queen does is any of your concern (business) especially if she is trying to get her subjects back unless she is at the point of trying to kill us. Your laws are not our laws."

Jacob frowned slightly. Was he only just a family friend then? He had to admit it... he was more than that, despite his reluctance to "boss around" the others in concerns that he would come off as domineering or overly controlling. It was probably something he needed to overcome slightly. He knew in his heart he wouldn't boss around the vampires for the sake of power lust. He just needed to get himself to accept that fully. "Perhaps.. I am more than just a family friend then. I've been reluctant to admit it at times, due to not wanting to gain a large head or anything."

“You have to show it more often because even I am confused as to what you are to me. Father still tells us to do things sometimes, including me. He has to keep an eye on some more than others. Father will always be father no matter what happens, but you…”

Wasn't he more now than "just a friend" to most of his demon rescues that he had saved over the years? In time, he'd almost become like family, or a fatherly figure to some. Idly he wondered if any had tried to show any slight romantic interest, then possibly realized at the time he may have been blind to any advances at him due to his poor social skills. Little that mattered now, he was very happy with who he was with currently. "What I said earlier, I don't necessarily mean as a threat. I would in all honestly rather find a peaceable solution. Or if she is going to lash out, have it be lashing out at me rather than anyone else. I suppose I can see the need to keep some in line, though."

Ma sat on one of the side benches lining the wall where parents of students usually sat and tapped his fingernails/claws together as he thought. "An emperor can make friends, but they still have duties to be an emperor above all even if they are benevolent and may have to command even their friends at times.”

Jacob scratched his head a little in thought as something idly came to mind. “Hmm. I sort of wonder, if it's possible to be in a situation where there's a pair of masters that those under them are allowed to choose which one to have. If there were an agreement of some sort in place, that is. I wonder what the consequences of that would be."

“I haven't heard of what you wonder about happening before. It is dividing a family. Veni would not be happy if any of his children chose her. But there is one thing you forget, she is Veni's mother, the one who changed him to what he is and that cannot be taken away from her. Veni still has influence on Rosemary even though you are her master does he not? Why would it be any different for Nafretiri Bixia?"

“Yes, Veni still does have influence on Rosemary. That's true. It might not be any different for Nafretiri." Jacob "hmm'ed" quietly as his mind thought about things a little. Idly he thought back to when he basically took "control" back from the Niearcim on Rosemary, control that was bleeding into Veni and the other vampires through Jiluzix's disturbingly powerful and horrendous magics. Ironic that it was only through those similar magics that he was able to somewhat undo that, because of his immortality curse and of being a necrotic mage. He shared this little tidbit with Ma, who had been staring at him now, wondering idly if the story had ever been revealed to him by Rosemary or Veni in some way or another... He assumed it had been in at least some minor form, but perhaps he should volunteer that bit of information. Perhaps this could have some form of effect on the master relationship issue at hand. "I find it so fortunate and unusual that because of that curse, we were able to keep Jiluzix from getting a powerful foothold in you. I detest what that demon does and stands for..."

Jacob had matured a bit with his last statement thought Ma because normally he'd say some profanity and that he outright hated the demon creature itself. He stared at Jacob with a questioning look. "Keep Jiluzix from getting a powerful foothold in me…in us? Ah I must not have understood that it was going to affect more than Rosemary even though she was mostly disconnected..." More like it wasn't really explained to him well as neither of them enjoyed bringing up that subject. And maybe Veni was too upset and injured at the time to understand it fully or be able to explain it well.

"All I knew was that she still had bad blood in her when she got back that someone could still summon her with.” Ma could sense it with his touch skill, but she had not been aware of what was happening. Jacob and Veni had suspected something already thus the vampire saw no point in saying anything at the time. “When the Niearcim took Rosemary in that other place, my master tried to hold onto her. But she was still pulled away very fast and violently. As a result he was very injured from it though not physically," Ma patted his chest area to indicate where as his eyes shifted downwards. "His qi was disrupted or damaged in a key place. He would have been slightly better off if he let go. This left him vulnerable though he couldn't admit it to anyone, but I knew. He was also very angry at this. Master Veni wasn't strong enough to fix it so you had to help her. I thought father accepted your help to be close to her still, to better protect us from Others since he was vulnerable, and to recover much faster. That's how I understood it. I did not know he was being infected despite losing a major connection to her. You 'nipped it in the bud' as they say fast enough that it probably didn't have the chance to trickle down much yet. What would have happened if you had not interfered?"

What would have happened if you had not interfered? Jacob shuddered slightly. Aside from what he KNEW what would've happened, he also had some very strong hunches and theories about what else would have happened as well, and they disturbed him. He took a moment to collect his thoughts.

“They... would have been soul trapped. Bound to Jiluzix. Possibly merged and made hybrids with the demon's corruptive essence so that he could more naturally control them and integrate them, and if they were to die, their souls, essences, would have been pulled back to Jiluzix by some very twisted and dark magics. Whether to power whatever foul works he does in his realm, or to reincarnate them into a new form, I couldn't say. That particular magic is a powerful one, and isn't often used, but I feel he would have used it. And this corruptible influence would have grown and spread throughout the others, faster and faster with each person it overtook I'm sure. To be honest, even at the time, I'm not 100% sure I was aware of the full implications of what Jiluzix could do... of what he could still do had he succeeded. I hate thinking it, but given enough time, he might have possibly made some even as blind as Coatli had been. Jiluzix would want absolute control and loyalty, and he would abuse it to the fullest extent.”

"So... if I understood that correctly... If she wasn't brought home quickly, in a matter of days or even hours with them working to enhance what they started she wouldn't have wanted to come home? And a whole line of vampires, and possibly someone in a position like Black, would have found themselves following a demon with no adverse opinion on it and adoration for it, as I've heard some mages described, and even if we didn't live to see that demon we would still find ourselves with it and in the end I am fortunate you were able to fix it?"

Jacob nodded. Ma's body stiffened looking much like a deer frozen in headlights. Slightly fearfully, Jacob shuddered to think... what if that demon had thought to use the immortality curse in some altered or twisted way on them? Whether to punish, or rather on the otherside of the coin, give them immense power. How many times has his curse of immortality been a boon to him, despite bringing him horrible suffering and torment in the past? He didn't want to voice this thought at all initially, but Ma could tell something disturbed the necromancer for a moment deeply as he watched bumps appear on the Other's skin as the hairs raised and body twitched...and even after speaking the man got more fearful and started to sweat a little and shudder again.

The vampire wiped at his forehead with the back of his hand and it came back with red tinted sweat. He didn’t acknowledge the necromancer who took a seat next to him as he stared at the sweat. Though he had been fortunate enough to have never met a mage, the stories and his elders fearing them were enough. He perceived them to be worse than the radical blind Christians who caused death believing it to be the will of God. They maimed themselves, killed for pleasure in the name of a demon god and not for food or in self-defense, and they ruined whole worlds, not just the intelligent population but everything, to name a few atrocities he couldn’t even imagine himself or even someone like BlackMN doing. He hadn't understood before that that was the reason Jacob, the Other, was there. "I am grateful for what you did Master... What disturbed you more after stating that?"

Jacob ran a hand through his own hair as he calmed himself. "The thought that... Well, my immortality curse. It's actually had its uses for me here and there when I've tried to save people, without worrying about my own wellbeing for the most part. I'd rather not say how many times I've been maimed horribly in the past, only to keep going. But the thought that Jiluzix might figure out that he could somehow tweak and alter that curse into a more beneficial dark spell to use on his own powerful minions is.. deeply disturbing. I don't think he's figured it out yet or hopefully hasn't even thought of it, since beings like Coatli and other potent mages have since passed on and haven't been heard from for some time."

I thought Coatli's death was an act of god, thought Ma remembering something he was told from one of their mutual friends whose reasoning is likely that God gives the angel's their powers. However as the vampire didn't know much about this god, he was unable to touch or read from the books on him, and lacked confidence in any knowledge he had of it, he didn't mention that.

Jacob pinched the bridge of his nose and gave a slight breath. "I've said it before... I'd rather nobody have to suffer under Jiluzix's reign."

Trying to change the subject a little Ma said, "is your immortality such a curse lately instead of a blessing? You now come home to loving arms even if they are cold... to creatures who I'm sure could have so much fun experimenting with a human that can't die. You consider yourself human don't you?"

Jacob mentally shook himself out of unpleasant thoughts to focus on what Ma was asking him. He simply coughed and cleared his throat slightly at the experimenting line aimed at him, his face reddening just a little bit. The vampire gained a satisfied wicked smile at the necromancer’s reaction confirming that he enjoyed it. "The aches and pains are still pretty horrible at times, I will admit. Even overall they've been lessened; I still wouldn't wish them on anyone. As to whether it's a curse or a blessing... It's hard to say. It's a blessing in disguise in part because of certain reasons, aside from being able to easily 'sacrifice' myself to keep loved ones safe without any long term consequences. Well, any that I've not already grown accustomed to." The first few times of getting smeared or blown apart were at least somewhat unsettling for the necromancer when they happened. "At any rate, even if it were fully a blessing for me, I still feel it's a duty on my part to find the way to remove the curse for others that are just as afflicted, if not more so. Who knows, maybe there's even more than one way to remove it, aside from divine intervention."

I thought you believed you would immediately die afterwards, so what good does that do anyone else with your curse? Veni had actually said something like that to him in a recent conversation. Knowing Jacob thought that way had upset his father.

"As for considering myself human... Well. I'd have to say yes, I do. One with immortality, but still a human that's had many years to learn many things, and with an innate sense for the dead since I was a child. Other than those things, I still breathe, eat, and function all the same."

"And that has been the concern... You saved and deeply involved yourself with people whose natural prey is humans. Father can’t say everything on your behalf; you have to let us know what you expect. Even I don’t know what to think of you. Several have asked me this that are afraid to ask you or Veni…” Ma's face was cautious. On the inside he was a little nervous to bring this up. "I don't really know how to ask properly... as you know we haven't spent most of our lives with substitutes readily available so we have a taste for hunting. It is what many of the others are used to, but no one is sure how you'd react to it so this has in part stopped many from doing what is natural to them... however many have grown restless and want to know if they can. Finding enough murderers isn't always easy."

"To be honest... I would rather prefer all of you stick to having to use willing partners, or go after those that would harm innocents. However, that's not exactly always feasible, is it?" Ma shook his head. They liked to play with their food like mice sometimes, but he didn’t vocalize this. Jacob thought for a moment, uncertain of what answer to provide to this question and problem. He wouldn't rather have the vampires starve, or go crazy with blood hunger or anything. He also would not rather have innocent people be killed if that could be avoided. However, he felt that if it couldn't be avoided for whatever reason, or if it somehow accidentally happen, perhaps that shouldn't be an issue then so much. And what did it harm an innocent person in the long run really if they were fed off of, willingly, or... unfortunately as it had to be done sometimes, unwillingly... they would not remember the incident however if done correctly. Jacob stretched slightly, and looked back towards Ma from his brief pondering and met his eyes. He felt a slight pull from them and realized that he was being scanned for sincerity in his words.

"I think feeding would be fine, just as long as the killing isn't done intentionally on innocent people. Murderers I'll let you all handle as you see fit. I can't very well take sustenance away from people. Anyway, yes, feeding on people in general is fine.

“I do have a slight concern that since this has only been recently brought to my awareness, that some may have grown a bit more restless than others, perhaps? I'd maybe suggest that those who are a little more in need of human blood have someone they trust if possible go with them so an accident might be avoided (though Jacob knew that it could still happen), or if they can go after a murderer first to take care of any hunger or craving issues."

Part 9: Uncharted Waters
I am out of source material save for what is taken from the last post. Thus from here on is not edited, but original. We’ll assume the year is 2013 for this one.

“That is reasonable,” said Ma relaxing some now, pulling his gaze away. He thought Jacob to be more of a hero type that would have had problems with it by finding such needs evil. He was more practical it seemed. “I think you do want the best for us.” Jacob smiled realizing that this child of Veni’s was starting to approve of him. “You’re keen on knowing how well Father and Rosemary are, but you need practice in sensing it for the rest of us.”

“You have a point,” said Jacob fidgeting. He was still reluctant to impose and be forceful. Ma laughed through his teeth. The necromancer inhaled. His hand shot outwards and scraped the vampire’s cheek who jumped several feet away, to the ceiling to be precise, in surprise. After beholding the other’s determined face, the vampire returned and leaned back into it; fingers resting on his temple, fleshy part on his cheek. He had a fierce look in his eyes.

“You can’t worry about abusing your power all the time. Not everyone will like you, some will not respect you if you hesitate in what needs to be done, not all are as sensible as I and you will have to deal with the more wild ones.” It was a similar statement to what Veni and Rosemary said; that they wanted to be ordered sometimes. “How old am I?”

“Hmm…” He wasn’t picking up a clear age like he normally did. He sensed something that said 397, but he sensed that he had been a vampire for 373. Was he picking up a birth year? No, it was Veni’s blood. That was when Ma had gotten a large dose of it, but he didn’t die until later. That was a large leap in time, but he didn’t appear to be physically older than Jacob. The necromancer doubted Veni would try to turn a toddler without reason. “You’ve been dead 373 years?”

Ma smiled. “That’s how long I have been a goeng-si.”

What else did he get from this? He started to feel deeper. How was the vampire’s wellbeing? Well he had no injuries to start with. What about stress? Well it had increased so much in recent months, why was that… He found a surge in energy. Ma had alluded to having trouble controlling his powers since the fight with Dieamos. What had happened there? His was more exposure and experience based. The more he was exposed to things that stimulate it, the more potent it became. Dieamos had been one of those exposures that surged it so much in the way of increased energy output which allowed him to send it through an entire body much more rapidly with minimal contact than he could before; it taking several seconds originally whereas now it was about one. When he was exposed to people who received terrible injury or he received such injuries it increased the painful experiences that he could put a victim through. Jacob now sensed that Ma was learning from his own horrid experiences and had learned quite a bit when he held his hand mere hours earlier. Consequently he sensed the vampires desire to test it on something and practice with it more often, but not knowing an appropriate outlet for it or a way to do it that fit his sense of morals or honor. He could sense the frustration of it all. Ma hadn’t adjusted fully to his exposure to Dieamos and would probably need an outlet soon. It was also tied in with his frustrations about feeding; he had less control of himself then. The vampire couldn’t fully relax around people.

So deep was he in his examination with his magic eye that he did not notice what was going on around him. Unexpectedly he felt a pang on his wrist. His eyes came back into focus and he looked at it. Ma had slashed his wrist with the edge of his talon. He saw that at some point the vampire had put his hand over Jacob’s, had turned his nose towards the pulse on the wrist and his lips were slightly parted. “Ma, what are you doing?! Stop it!”

The corner of Ma’s mouth went up. “You’re too late. You wouldn’t have noticed being bitten by anyone else.”

“Were you… testing me?” He was only slightly irked at the whole thing. It surprised the necromancer more than anything; though the cut stung a bit. Veni wasn’t kidding about Ma being more open to various topics when confronted alone. But why did he feel the need to test him?

“Yes…Ah… more like teaching you a lesson. Though you can normally trust me to not try something like this, you can’t trust several of the others to not try to get away with something; especially Dan and Daisy. One of them would have gotten away with a little drink without your notice. I warn you, don’t get too comfortable with my other relatives. They take advantage of you.” He saw why Father had suggested him first. He would teach unsavory things for the human to be prepared for, but he wouldn’t take advantage later should he fail the first try. His lips moved closer to the healing wrist.

The necromancer tried to jerk his hand away, but the vampire held onto it. That’s when he realized Ma’s predator instincts were stronger than Veni’s and Rosemary’s though he wasn’t sure the one before him perceived this about himself. He hadn’t been known to act on them really which was in part why he lived here without incident. The human took a deep breath and calmly said, “Ma, release my hand.”

The Chinese vampire immediately let go. He was relieved to have been stopped for he had not desired to go through with the test. Jacob slowly moved his hand away, though he almost jerked it away but had thought better of it. “Good. You didn’t seem like prey. You must never panic and never seem afraid if one of us tries to scare you otherwise you will give the impression of being prey because you are human. Never allow any vampire or any creature that drinks blood for that matter but Veni and Rosemary have your blood without your permission first.”

Jacob looked at his wrist which was already almost healed. It wasn’t a deep cut so his curse quickly restored him to normal save for the escaped blood on his skin. He held it out. “You may clean it.” He had made a similar offering to Veni and Rosemary once, but they had been growing thirsty from all their injuries.

The vampire leaned towards it as if he was going to. His lips drew closer, he could taste its scent. He suddenly covered the blood with a few tissues and started to wipe it clean. “Best not to develop craving for your blood as well.”

“Since you crave to torture me?” Jacob said thinking about his demonstration earlier that evening and what he sensed moments ago realizing too late that his wording was very poor.

Ma froze for a moment before continuing his work with a neutral expression. “I deserve that.” Translation to what he meant; that was a bit cruel. It stung a little too. “You do not deserve torture from me.”

“I didn’t mean it like that. What would you have done if I had failed?” Jacob stared at the top of Ma’s head who kept busy despite that the arm was clean.

“I would have taken your blood without your permission,” he said simply.

“Then what would have happened?” Jacob pressed.

“I don’t know what you would have done.” Ma said trying to dodge the topic, looking up at Jacob in the eyes. He didn’t like where he thought this discussion was going. This kept happening tonight. At least it wasn’t about his feeding needs. He crumpled the tissues in his hands.

“I mean what would have happened if you took my blood without permission?” The necromancer wasn’t going to back off. He had to learn more about their etiquette and how they dealt with things. He didn’t want to try to remember to ask Veni or Rosemary these things later. Plus they’d ask where the topic even came from.

“You mean other than enjoy the taste? Depends on who learn about it.” He caved slightly.

“Wha…what do you mean?”

“If only Father found out nothing would likely come of it. If Rosemary knowing possibly nothing or a hit to my head that would fling me into the wall.” Jacob could picture Rosemary easily doing that too and the ironic thing is Ma is the one who probably taught her to hit well too. The vampire started to juggle the tissue ball between his hands. “If anyone else found out, he’d be forced to address it and punish me. You’re theirs, but more importantly his. He is the master. He can’t very well allow anyone to do that even if my intention is to teach you not to allow it to happen. He couldn’t show favoritism. You also can’t let it happen either if you’re the master’s master.”

“What would Veni do?” He knew Veni dealt with his vampires in various ways, though he hadn’t been a direct witness to it before. He was curious.

“Probably hit me or scratch me multiple times while hanging upside down using his shadow to hold me. I doubt he’d lock me in a coffin for any length of time,” said the vampire with a matter-of-fact tone.

Jacob was aghast that Veni was capable of such punishments towards someone he seemed to think so highly of and love. He was surprised that Ma could sound so unemotional about it. He understood the reasoning though and pictured that Veni didn’t enjoy doing such things. “You’re fine with it?”

“He’s usually good at making it up to me in private depending on the reason for its occurrence. Father never had a taste for true torment,” Ma said simply and to Jacob’s slight relief to hear what he thought to be true from someone else. Veni preferred to play with people more like a cat, which was cruel in some ways but Ma never saw it as overly bad. Or he would be more of a boogeyman.

“Do you?” Immediately he regretted blurting that out. He already knew the answer to be no. He was aware that Ma had been feeding on the bloodbags because he didn’t mentally like the idea of tormenting people. The vampire was afraid of developing an addiction like need of it. So much so he was near the point of becoming desperate to near madness from resisting the other need for going after a human in general. The vampire in question was giving him a look of contempt. “Sorry, that was tactless. I know you don’t.”

… Ma was silent for a period of time long enough to be awkward. He finally inhaled and sighed. He nodded, but said nothing. Jacob’s movements continued to indicate that he was very uncomfortable from this particular silence so the vampire said, “you are forgiven.” He watched the man relax. “I wanted to review the kick I once gave you and properly teach you the strike I mentioned upon arrival, but this last lesson is good enough and it is late.” He stood and walked to a trash can to toss the crumpled tissue in.

Part 10: Ending

“Ah…There is one question I wanted to ask you,” Ma said as he walked back to where he was once sitting and where Jacob currently sat. “It is rather personal, but it is related to your concern of earlier. Have you ever been under the impression that Father would make you a vampire if he could?”

Jacob opened his mouth to say no, but then closed it. He remembered what he felt from Veni when the vampire had nearly cried from his own thoughts and that he had felt a similar feeling when the blood drinker had fed off him soon afterwards. Only the second time it had more of a possessive feeling to it. “I believe so… when he was feeding recently.”

Ma moved a chair so he could sit more directly in front of the necromancer to look at him better for this discussion without standing over him. “Veni told me that he gave you a large quantity of blood for the spell that fixed your body. That it was a component didn’t surprise me as our blood can be used to heal injuries and help ailments, but did you know it was potentially enough blood to make you my brother if your curse or possibly the spell itself hadn’t prevented it?” The man was injured enough that it might have worked, Ma thought. His injuries that he used to possess were fatal, but the curse kept him alive.

“I hadn’t thought of that,” he admitted.

“If Father has indeed had inkling to make you his child, than you can be confident in that he loves you. Father nonsense speaking. When you’re under the swoon and he’s in bliss from your blood you can glance his true feelings if you gently pry. But I think I need to continue to risk their anger by overstepping my bounds for you and father both love each other. You need to know this now rather than be shocked by it later. I don’t want your relationship type to continue too long if you can’t handle a decision you may not realize you need to make. If you knowingly love a vampire and the vampire loves you in return there is a chance you’ll end up like me. It seems like you are close to the last parts of curing the curse; I got that impression when I touched you. What seems to be left is breaking the endless cycle of pain.” Which might be what makes you immortal, Ma thought. “And what might occur when that happens? Will you start to age and die? For all we know you may cure your curse in mere months or it may take hundreds of years, but if they are still around, you might find yourself joining us whether you gave them permission or not.”

Jacob grew visibly more uncomfortable where the vampire was going with the topic. He began to fidget a ball of his energy between his fingers. The vampire’s gaze was immediately on the hand both fascinated by the energy he felt attracted to and somewhat weary he’d attack him with it. Jacob remembered fragments he’d get of Rosemary’s memory and knew Veni had done so without her consent or real knowledge of what he was. Either one of them could do it he realized with Veni the most likely to force him. As a necromancer he had the power to keep that from happening unless he was extremely weakened. Would he be willing to stop either of them from trying? If he did, he knew it would create a rift between them especially if he had horror in his reaction at what they attempted and then there was the dejection and frustration they’d feel. He could accidentally kill them too if he struggled and the very thought horrified him like the thought of someone or something else doing them in. He thought on the sturdier, altered rib cage he gave and maintains on Veni and other things he’d do to keep them alive. His companion waited patiently for his response. Would it be so bad to be a vampire? He could still die in that form. The thought of hungering for human blood unsettled him for he knew how much they relished in taking his blood and how he enjoyed giving it to them; the pleasure in them taking it. If he didn’t focus on the horror of the idea, there was something else to be realized. He tossed the energy at Ma who looked fearful and held up his arm in defense, but it was opposite from what he expected as he gripped his chair and doubled over as he shivered in pleasure. “I would do anything I can think of with my power to keep them alive and to protect those they love. I have already done things to that end that Veni isn’t always comfortable with. They’d be doing the same thing I do, but in the way that they can though more permanent.”

Ma smiled and chuckled as he recovered from what was done to him, quite happy that Jacob seemed to understand. He straightened still breathing heavily from his exposure to the magic. “But do you really accept that?" He continued to push. Ma could forgive the man for hurting Veni if he ended their romantic relationship soon by deciding he couldn't handle this. However if this relationship continued to deepen and he renounced it for these reasons, really hurting Father, Jianshen, would not forgive. "You must be confident in such a decision if you’d accept such a possibility so you don’t hurt them if it does happen. Does the thought that you may potentially end up like me some day horrify you more than the unbearable thought of disconnecting yourself from probably your greatest companions?”

Jacob seemed to flinch slightly in Ma’s eyes but it was really a jolt of realization. “Ma, you knew Veni was a vampire too when you were human didn’t you?”

The raven haired man nodded once. “I met Father when I was still a child and knew he wasn’t human when I met him. I had realized he might do it years after knowing him, when I felt it while swooned once. For me the thought of pushing Veni away was more unbearable than the thought that he might someday make me a monster as well if I didn’t. I can’t say I fully understood what he was, like you do, or fully comprehended his nature at the time, but I had decided to enjoy his friendship rather than worry about such a thing. In the end, when he did what I expected him to do and I became what I am when I died, I have never really been horrified at what I am even in the early days. I would still choose this. Which one is it for you? Risk to be cursed again as some view it?”

The necromancer grimaced at his word choice. “I don’t think I could bear pushing them away either…but… Would you tell me what it was like for you? How you met him?”

The vampire hmmed as he considered the request. “If it will help you decide one way or the other or ease your nerves if you’ve already decided, I will for Father’s sake, but it is too late for that tonight.”

Jacob glanced at a clock, it was nearing the time he knew to be sunrise, and got up. The vampire stood as well. “You’re right. I better go so you can get ready for the morning and that I may see them before they sleep.”

As Ma led him to the door he said, “you have an advantage in your thoughts for the decision I never did. It might be easier for you as you’d have more food options than I did. We never had alternatives for food like tame or what I like to think of the domesticated ones have here so you may never need be exposed to having to hunt. It is like city folk who buy food and then the wilder man who hunt for food all their life in other areas. If you bring the hunter into the city they still want to hunt sometimes… Come back in two nights if you can and I’ll tell you how I met him and what I thought. If you can’t come, have Father give you my number please.”

He held the door open for him and as Jacob walked out he asked for his translator back which were the final words he’d say in his native tongue to him for the night. The necromancer handed it back and Ma slowly closed the door, looking out as he did. Before he finished shutting it Jacob suddenly asked, “do you have anyone you’d turn to keep them with you?”

The raven haired vampire responded with a pointed smile and red eyes from the other side of the door that sent a chill down the other’s spine from the sudden change in his expression from pleasant to predator. “But I am tame goeng-si …ah vampire (while) living here.”

Afterwards

Jacob’s part

I just hope I chose the right form of the Latin words.

Upon entering his house he first saw a sinister shadow that started to grin the moment it saw him. It was from the side view; that grin. It moved across objects towards him and grabbed him. More precisely it grabbed his shadow and lifted it, and consequently him, in an embrace. The sensation sent a chill down his spine, though he was not afraid. This shadow had become more powerful and it seemed willful ever since the owner started practicing with it more with a group of shadow manipulators in Limbo. The shadow then rushed with its cargo to the one who this darkness belonged to.

The owner of the shadow had some pajama bottoms on and his shirt unbuttoned as he was in the middle of getting dressed for bed. He paused in his undressing and held open his arms with a grin full of sharp teeth for the one coming towards him. Once he reached him however his teeth appeared normal with only the two sharp teeth of a vampire in his smile. The necromancer was dipped suddenly and Veni bent his head down to kiss him.

Jacob eagerly took it having known the other’s intentions from his body language as he approached. They may have lacked the free flowing telepathic connection that the necromancer shared with Rosemary, but he had started to learn that if he paid attention his powers and connection could tell him things. It was a different type of gut feeling than his more premonition type ones. He realized this went beyond Veni while with Ma who was slightly afraid of him and a little distrustful, however he knew the man liked him a little better after tonight despite their relationship still being shaky. Right now it was telling him that only he mattered at this moment to Veni; even through the growing weariness the vampire felt as the time ticked closer to his absolute need for sleep. This knowledge that the vampire wasn’t merely trying to make him feel wanted, but actually did want him filled him with a happiness he had never felt before he opened up to him. He let the vampire hold all his weight, which was simple for him, and relaxed so completely that if the other were to let go he would fall. He cupped his hand on the vampire’s face feeling the slight point on the other’s ears as his lips worked with his. He realized he could hardly imagine that for a brief time in his companion’s existence he didn’t have ears like that, or crimson eyes, or the sharp teeth of which he had to execute caution of if he didn’t want to bleed when he kissed him in certain ways. He moved his fingers down to those teeth and pulled away from the kisses so that he could feel of them.

He could sense the undead man’s curiosity at what he was doing, but unlike Rosemary he knew Veni wouldn’t question him too much about it. Veni almost always allowed him to do as he pleased with him even to the point of altering his body a little. He was so compliant that he even opened his mouth slightly allowing him to feel all around the tooth. He put his finger on the tip. The beauty held very still, supporting him with ease despite the slightly awkward position, half closed his eyes, and released the low rumble of his purr when this was done. If he moved much the skin would break . The vampire loved that the human could touch his teeth without cringing. The human loved this inhuman sound he could do that was uniquely his as Rosemary couldn’t do it.

Slowly he removed his hand from the mouth and slid it across his cheek, using some of his energies to make his touch tingle all the more, Veni purring even louder for it, and pulled on the back of his head to bring him down to kiss him again. The vampire was a bit more passionate than he was earlier in response. Jacob for his part forgot about the things that had preoccupied his mind, finding it harder and harder to think clearly as he kissed him.

Rosemary entered at that point and growled in mock annoyance. She was dressed in a long satin gown that had spaghetti straps up top. Though considered modest today, Rosemary still felt the need to have a light robe over it until she went to bed since it wasn’t decent in her time.

Veni’s head snapped up as he looked at her and straightened the two of them back into a normal standing position, but lifted Jacob and tossed him slightly towards Rosemary. He landed in her arms and against her body. The two stared at each other in surprise, blinking a few seconds, before looking at Veni. The blonde one slid his shirt off his shoulders, pulled a pajama shirt on, and quickly buttoned it. So fast were his movements that Jacob barely saw him do it. “Kiss her you idiot,” he teased.

Jacob turned back around and did just that. Rosemary was a bit more reserved than Veni when it came to intimacy and required more coaxing to get more passionate kisses. He also knew from her thoughts that she was more interested in knowing how his evening went. He kept the last conversation to himself for the time being and thought on other parts of the night like Ma’s greeting, his impression on how the vampire handled an unexpected guest, and parts of their outing particularly that he thought Ma’s familiar would eventually be some lizard or snake. Rosemary shared some of the more interesting points of teaching, Muerte, a boy at heart trapped in a man’s body by some horrid experiments to make him a great warrior.

Veni could tell they were having a silent conversation and felt slightly jealous. Effort had to be put into it for one with him. He envied their ability to do that so easily between the two sometimes. But at the same time he didn’t because he wouldn’t want his thoughts to be an open book to anyone at all times like it was between the two. To sum it up he felt a little left out on occasion. Out of nowhere he appeared at their side and the two jerked back from one another a little. He kissed each of theirs’ cheek saying, “aeternus meus” when he kissed Jacob’s and “amores. Valete,” when he kissed Rosemary’s. He gave his impish smile, only slightly showing off his teeth, at Rosemary’s bewildered look.

His choice to emphasize the word “eternal” over “loves” or “my” as he normally did confused Rosemary. It sounded like he potentially meant “Eternally mine, loves/darlings. Farewell.” His usual statement could normally be taken as “my eternal loves/darlings. Farewell” with him emphasizing them being his (meus) or that they’re his great loves/darlings (amores). While she pondered the proper word order of his statement, Jacob scooped him up like a bride to be carried over the threshold and walked with him over to the bed. “You’re stealing me away,” said Veni. He was referring to the symbolism of stealing the girl and carrying her away. Jacob smiled, but said nothing. The vampire looked and felt tired to him, but he still tried to have conversation. “Did Jianshen treat you well?”

“Yes. I plan to see him again in a couple nights.”

“I’m glad.” Veni relaxed more and cuddled into him. The necromancer could tell that his body was starting to slowly die for his daily rest. “You were gone longer than I expected.”

“We had several conversations and had an outing of sorts in a nearby park.” It was too late tonight for him to go into many details and he knew it. Veni was satisfied with the answer for now.

“You’re so warm… I feel…cold,” the vampire said moments before he was set on the bed.

He put his warm-blooded hand to the colder one’s cheek. Veni stared back at him fighting to stay awake much like a dying creature resisting death. “It’s alright, Vennil, my love,” Jacob said softly. “Go to sleep.”

“Etiam in morte, superset amor,” he said quoting some old literature. Rosemary’s thoughts gave Jacob the translation in death, love survives. He knew a few Latin phrases thanks to Veni and mostly the sweet ones like; meus amor (my love/my darling), te amo (I love you), or te amo, mi angele (I love you, my angel). The last one he’d more often say to Rosemary. It was to Jacob’s understanding that he started using this phrase recently when Rosemary was somehow chosen to be an angel. She would have been offended or distraught by being called angel before that. The details of the incident he was never clear on as the vampire had been partially delusional from injuries when it happened. He just knew that some being had been involved that looked familiar, yet she didn’t recognize or remember meeting before.

The necromancer felt him stop resisting and slowly shut down. He could feel it and not merely witness it. Rosemary found it unsettling to see Veni fall into the darkness of his daily rest. In the past she would be gone first and never witness this herself. She now slept somewhere between like a human and vampire, some nights more like one over the other. When it was more like a human she’d often have horrible dreams, vampire nothing at all, but still stir slightly. The vampire finally closed his eyes right before his last breath and fell into oblivion. Not even a thought could be detected. Jacob removed his hand and went into the bathroom to prepare for bed. When he came back Rosemary had taken off her robe and settled in the middle of the bed. He took his place next to her and lay on his back. She moved into him with her head on his chest and arm across it. He kissed the top of her head and stroked her back as they began to doze off.

As Jacob relaxed, his mind began to ponder what had happened that night. While he dozed he thought of one of the last things Ma had said, “you might find yourself joining us whether you gave them permission or not.” He was startled and jolted alert by Rosemary's sudden loud voice of which he couldn't tell if it was in his head or if she said it out loud as she exclaimed, "He said what to you?!" And found himself holding her tightly having to quickly calm her before her emotions affected him as well.

Ma’s part

As soon as he was sure Jacob was some distance away or gone from the realm, Ma picked up the creature he bought earlier and had taken a sip from. He did to it what he said he would do to Jacob should he feed off him; one whole curse cycle with the pain of complete regeneration. He had not gotten far, a couple seconds, when several of the blood vessels burst internally, one externally, and the creature’s heart stopped from the stress. The blood freely flowed onto Ma’s hand and he quickly put the wounded area to his mouth so it wouldn’t drip and make a mess. His eyes looked vexed at the whole result. He hadn’t expected anything more, but it was still a disappointment. He removed the thing from his residence and took it to the outside burnable trash. He then quickly went to a sink and washed the blood from his hand. He took a deep breath, stretched a little, and calmed down some as he walked to his office like area.
He settled at his desk and pulled out his favorite writing set. It wasn’t so much a set in that everything matched for it was completely mismatched but the symbolism of each piece was more meaningful to him than a writing set that had all the same design. The largest piece had a dragon and a phoenix on it along with other designs. Both are divine creatures in mythology one meaning auspicious and the other eternal life. Many key events in his human life happened in a dragon year; he was born in one, met his vampire father in one, almost died in one, and finally became a vampire in one. He removed the top of this to reveal a slightly slanted surface to have a small well at one end. He added a little water from a ceramic dropper to this as well into a small brush washing pot with a horse carving. A horse was the meaning of the symbol used for his family name. A horse is seen as a sign of strength, vitality, speed, and beauty. It also is seen as a faithful and an unyielding spirit. So much symbolism associated with him that meant health and vitality when he was alive, yet he was not. It had always bothered him then; now he thought it ironic.
He took what appeared to be a small black stick and dipped the tip into the water he added to the first piece and dragged it up along the surface. He then twisted it in a circular manner on the stone. This process was repeated until the water became fairly black and at a consistency he seemed to be satisfied with. Finally his brush rested on a brush holder in the shape of a flame with a bat inscribed on it. Bats meant good fortune and it was the form he saw Veni in when he would hide in the shadows to sleep in his room some days. He had been surprised to find that the dragon and bats were symbols of the devil in the west; quite the opposite from where he lived. He found them to be backwards thinkers sometimes. The brush was dipped into the blackened water that was now ink in the inkstone and he began to read and sign some papers. When signing his name or in most writing he still preferred a brush over a pen. He also took out a journal in which he wrote down some of his thoughts and events of the day.
After writing for a time he cleaned and put the top back on the inkwell, washed his brush, and rubbed his eyes feeling the overwhelming need to sleep that he has never been able to conquer start to come upon him. The day’s light in Limbo had just appeared and it was becoming bright out having passed the morning part of twilight. The sound of a click came from his front door and he was on his feet and in the next room in an instant recognizing who it was before he saw him. His expression was soft at first before it hardened. “You knowing it is too late.”

Eztli smiled sheepishly at him. “My apologies. I know you don’t like me to arrive when you’re about to go to sleep Sifu, but I wanted to stay here today.”

The vampire gave a slight sigh. He loved the boy but he disliked it when he arrived so close to the daily slumber. “I can’t stand being awake much longer. You almost not making it.”

“A weakness you cannot conquer, I know.”

Ma smiled and had amusement in his eyes as he nodded. Instead of arguing playfully that he had only allowed him to stay with him till he finished school and could properly care for himself like he could now, the vampire said, “lock up.”

The young man did so and was soon following behind the vampire who was unbraiding his hair as he walked. The crinkles came out very easily when he ran his hand through it. This fascinated Eztli; how strait it became very quickly. From previous encounters of it brushing against his skin, he knew it was very silky too. But he also knew a lot of the Sifu’s habits from living there after his parents had died. He had relatives, but they weren’t in the area so he would have had to go to school in another district and he had wanted to finish it here. Ma had offered to have him to stay if his relatives would allow it and if he wanted to. Eztli did for a few years and now he is done with public schooling and considered an adult, but still desired to stay with Sifu sometimes; especially as of late.

He sensed something had been off with him lately. It wasn’t an empathy observation, maybe only slightly, but it was mostly from visual observations. He had seen the vampire strike himself at certain points, though his vision couldn’t catch the exact details of the blow as he moved too fast, noticed that he had more dead blood bags in his waste bin than he used to, and that his eyes seemed slightly more red at times for no apparent reason than they used to. Eztli was starting to worry that something happened to Ma and he was having difficulty recovering. He worried that the vampire might have an accident and attack someone. He knew his Sifu worried about this too from his observations of him over the years and how people have treated him sometimes; sneering at him for being some violent creature and trying to ward others away from him through slander. His record had been good all these years, but one slipup and they’d be proven right. Eztli didn’t like the thought. He’d rather be the one the slipup happened to. If it wasn’t bad enough to put him in sever condition, no one need know. The boy was given tranquilizers that the realm had developed to use on vampires to subdue them. His family had insisted on such a precaution when he was younger.

The vampire walked down the stairs with straight and smooth seeming stride and easily shut the heavy door at the bottom. Eztli knew it was show and Ma was focusing on not stumbling or slumping off to bed. It always amazed him that even when he was like this the vampire could still close and lock the heavy door, which he couldn’t open himself because it was too heavy, to his basement rooms. Once down, Ma made a quiet sigh at the dirty dishes he forgot he had. “I’ll do these tomorrow,” he said and removed the tray from the table and put them near the sink. He then took the kang table off the platform bed and put it underneath.

He walked off out of sight and changed into a colorful robe like garment. Eztli meanwhile began to clean the dishes. The vampire returned a brush in hand, and fluffed the pillows. He situated himself all the way to the back of it with back rail of the bed behind him, so he could face Eztli, and began to run the brush through his hair.

“Is everything alright, Sifu?” Eztli asked as he carefully handled the teapot.

“I feeling ill.” Ma meant more by it than he normally did. He normally began to feel ill when he was still up at this time, but tonight’s encounter with other recent exposures hadn’t left him feeling entirely well.

“No, I mean with the necromancer.” The boy was afraid that Jacob’s visit meant something was amiss since he hadn’t been there for lessons. “I know you start to feel sick when you stay up too long.”

“Yes…?” Ma made it sound like a question. He thought the visit went well as far as their relationship was concerned, so he wasn’t entirely sure what the boy meant…

“That necromancer is famous. He’s mentioned in the history books you know. For him, someone who deals in the dead, to be visiting you; are you alright?”

“His life is eventful enough to be written about, it not surprising me. You find it odd I knowing someone famous when I not knowing this realm thing till the last 10 years?”

Eztli nodded. “Yeah.”

“When family attacked by Niearchim things, Jacob came. Remember my Father?”

“That amusing shadow dude?” Eztli remembered him. He often wore an impish smile when he saw him and looked physically younger than Ma, but he knew that’s how it worked with vampires sometimes.

Ma nodded. “He spends much time with Father and Rosemary now. He wanted to knowing me better. I appreciating your concern.” He set the brush aside. His eyes slowly closed as he spoke and the boy knew that was the end of their conversation; he couldn’t reasonably keep himself up unless his life depended on it. “Thank you for cleaning thing. Go to bed soon… please…” He always said something like that when he went to sleep if Eztli was still up. Actually Eztli knew the vampire preferred him to be in his room when he went to sleep. Ma was then gone from his vision having quickly moved to wherever it was he hid when he went into a dark and usually dreamless sleep.
