It was a nice forest. It really was. Not too out of her tastes, nor was it really anything to consider as... below them. For land anyway. But being that it wasn't their land, and they'd been... sidled to it. She wasn't as pleased with it as she might have been. The trees were great, the water was clear, and there weren't exactly hunters prowling to murder them(as far as she'd seen).

So all was well.

Minus the fact that it wasn't what she'd expected. "Go train abroad, they said! You'll end up stronger! Wiser! More worldly! They said all sorts of things." She lightly swung back, letting herself slide from the branch she was on and to the ground below. She landed with a light thud, somewhat softened as she'd opened her wings to slow the fall. "Leave home for a while and the entire thing goes haywire." She shook her head, rather agitated by the whole mess. She didn't even have all of the details.

Just that things happened, the isles weren't exactly home anymore, and she had a reserve to live in. Wonderful. There were even a bunch of kids not far off at some school. She had been told she was welcome to go to classes. But that suggested they wanted her to learn something. What, to let humans roll all over her? Last she'd checked the halloween folk seemed more than happy to avoid scratching humans in their endeavors. That wasn't bright.

She sighed, stalking a few paces forward, heading for the creek she'd been listening to. At least the place wasn't bad, but... why were any of them settling for this? This seemed a bit... beneath them. Their clans were so proud, ancient. Why would they take whatever kindness was handed to them?

What had happened to reduce them to this?

Nergui was in the creek. Clear water swirled around dark ankles as she followed the flow, silver and gold gaze searching the polished stones within for anything eye catching. There was already a small collection of pretty rocks gathered in her skirt, cream colored fabric darker from the water. She had the corners held up, bundled in one small hand. Silver hair was up, as it usually was, gathered at the back of her head with a soft frame of feathers. Her veil was tied, lacy fall draping down her back . She seldom wore it over her face anymore.

When she heard the sound of approaching foot steps she straightened up, attention drifting up from the colorful stones to the mare that was slipping between the trees. The arch of pale wings marked her as a member of War, but she didn't recognize her. The Lost Clans weren't that large, and she knew everyone in the reserve, if not by name then at least by face. This mare, whoever she was, was new.

She also appeared to be quite irritated with something, and Nergui stood quietly and waited to be noticed before offering to say anything. She did nod, the simplest of greetings, out of respect. Anything further would wait until she knew who she was dealing with.

As she reached the creek it wasn't the bubbling waters alone that greeted her, but the rather ornately dressed figure of a fellow horsewoman. Something of an oddity she hadn't expected to see really, which caused on brow to arch as she raised an arm and gave her hand in a quick jerk of a wave in greeting. After all, the nod offered suggested the death mare meant no ill. But it seemed true, the clans had all been placed closer together.

What Kiwi had mentioned wasn't false, not that she had reason to distrust. This merely hammered it in further. "Good afternoon." She offered, a smile gracing her lips, dropping her previous grimace for it, as she strode forward, no trace of any lack of confidence as she moved to the stream, not exactly one to be kept from her original task. She'd been intending a sip of water, but distractions were to be had at least briefly. "Are you well?" A brief look to the oddly clutched bundle. Stones? Perhaps some form of an artisan? She couldn't be sure, such things weren't a study of her's. She drew her attention back up to the face of the woman before speaking up again, this time to introduce herself.

As was only proper.

"I'm Asteria, and you might be?" She inquired, stooping after a moment to carefully take a moment to wash her hands in the creek. She might have been a touch wild, but she knew to get muck from the wilds off her hands before scooping up a drink at least. After that, perhaps if the fellow mare desired to speak, she'd gather a few answers. Particularly, why they were putting up with it all. Why nothing more was being done.

Asteria's smile was greeting with one in return, the Death mare's features lighting up in friendly warmth. "Good afternoon."

Once upon a time Nergui had been a cold, solitary scholar, adamant to avoid her other clansmen at almost all costs. She had considered herself above them, all of them. A priestess of Death, she had felt untouchable. And then the isles had fallen, and everything she had thought she knew came crumbling down around her. It had been a catalyst to change, one that had been accelerated by the the forging of friendships, of finding her beloved cousin alive and well, and of having allowed herself to develop very serious feelings for a certain guardian.

Shew as better for the changes, kinder, gentler. Elegant and graceful as she moved through the stream to join the other mare at the bank. She looked delicate. She was not.

"I am very well, thank you." Another smile, soft and open. "I'm Nergui."

Carefully she began transferring the gathered stones to the flat of a stump at the bank, then smoothed her damp skirt down around her thighs. "You're new to us, right? There aren't many, and I haven't seen you around before." Any addition to the clans was a blessing from the goddess.

She seemed pleasant enough, perhaps not the most talkative, but friendly? Asteria offered a nod at the greeting before waiting for the second response that came. While she wasn't one to rush others, waiting wasn't exactly in the book of things that came naturally for her clan. A trained thing that took a bit of effort, even if responses were to come.

It became obvious then, what the other woman had about her. Stones? Curious little things weighing her down as she came closer and replied, introducing herself as well. "Good to meet you then, Nergui." She replied, watching the other mare's actions a moment before her wings perked a bit at the comment. So as much was true, there weren't too many of them around. Was their destruction so complete that few remained..? She lacked the details, but each seemed pleased to see a newcomer, which was a pleasure. Let that not be forgotten. To be welcomed was wonderful. But it also spoke of something a bit dark in the background, something she'd gotten only an inkling of information about. "I've only recently flew in you could say." She replied, giving her wings a bit of a flourish for a moment with the joke, still trying to keep the topic light as she moved to examine the stones curious. "Is there a reason we are so few? It was my understanding all that return are sent here?"

After all. She'd been directed to this exact area upon returning from her practice and studies abroad. Wasn't it a given that there should have been many who returned? Why so few, why so rare? Had they been struck down so soundly? Her face was still smiling, trying to be happy about meeting someone new. Truly. But her senses told her, perhaps, that she should have felt a great sadness and loss behind the words she'd just heard. There aren't many. Those few words said so much, and they'd fallen easily. Which meant...

"Were the isles, as I've heard, not all that were struck so soundly?" She'd heard of the isles being in a bad state from Kiwi, vague as it was, but... not that so few remained. But this wasn't a large area, she'd flown high enough to see that. It wasn't large enough to sustain what once was. The isles, as she'd been told, were struck with insanity so they could not be there... which meant..?

Delicate features fell slightly at the other mare's question, and heterochromic eyes dipped, dropping down and away as she lift a hand to tuck a loose curl behind the point of one ear. "It's still unclear how many were lost, but nearly all who were not away from the islands at the time of their fall are now gone." Nergui's parents and sister, among so many others. She had seen what little remained with her own eyes. Fragmented memories that had lingered for love, for spite, or simply because they could not bare to move on. The restless many had risen up to form an echo of the creature that had destroyed their homes.

They had, as Asteria feared, been struck low, but they were still Horsemen. They still formed the root of fear for mankind. The bringers of death, or decay, of hopelessness. They had suffered, but they remained, and they were growing. Every new face that returned strengthened them.

"It was enough that the isles were taken from us. Only handfuls of kinsmen were off and away, and fewer still had managed to escape." She looked up then, and once again her palms smoothed along her thighs. Smoothing wrinkles that were not there. A mark of anxiety. The soft murmur of whispering voices flowing incomprehensibly though a fractured mind. Stronger then it had been, but still well and truly infected. The golden glow of her right eye marked her as other.

Directly after the fall of the isles those that had touched by Insanity had been plagued. Paranoia and doubt chased at their heels, and the voices had been loud enough to whisper pretty little lies so sweetly in their ears. it had taken time, and the acceptance and care of their clansmen, to rise above the taint.
