I had to skimp and go without groceries to buy this kid his treasured iPod for his birthday. That was all he wanted. And it put me seriously behind. And now, less than a month later, he sits in his room sobbing instead of sleeping because he ignored my directions and brought it to school. He has group therapy after school. Those kids are little shits. It's missing now. And I'm supposed to replace it? I think not.

I'm so frustrated with him. He comes home from the program late. THey don't get him home until bed time. They have homework time and can't seem to get the kid to focus long enough to get one assignment done.. It is now an hour past bedtime and he's finally finished, only to realize his freaking iPod is missing.

If it was an iPod Touch 4th gen or later I think you can track it via the "Find my iPhone" app. (if it was set up, that is).

Otherwise, report it stolen to the school. They likely won't do much, but it "might" mysteriously be found.

Sounds like it will be a good lesson in responsibility for him, even if it will result in tantrums for a while.

Contact the after school program, like Rev suggested, but don't, under any circumstances, resort to buying him a new one. It's his fault he lost it and now he's gotta learn to deal with the consequences for not listening to you. He's going to have to learn the hard way.

If he seriously wants a new one, make a deal: He has to get his homework done by a certain time each day (by the end of the after school program?) and do all of his chores. For each day he does those successfully, he gets a sticker on a chart. Each sticker is worth $2 or something like that. No sticker if he doesn't get one or the other done. When he's amassed enough stickers to buy a new one, he can get a new one. You can even offer extra bonus stickers for doing his siblings chores or helping out when you haven't asked.

I don't know how well that would work, but it's worth a shot. And it gives you a chance to squirrel away a tiny bit in your budget to eventually get it when he has amassed the stickers. It'll take him 75 days of getting both homework and chores done (without bonus stickers) to amass enough to get a nano. 125 days to get a classic.

If you don't mind used and older iPods, Gamestop has relatively decent prices on 3rd-5th gen iPod Nanos. the iPod Touch, however, tends to have stupid prices.

Some of the used stores up my way have decent prices, but I haven't looked in a bit.

I'm with Chino on this one. It really sucks that you had to sacrifice buying groceries to get him his present, but he didn't listen to you. He shouldn't be able to get a new one unless he earns it by saving up. That being said, I think I remember you saying that he has anger or ADD issues, and so I really hope he doesn't use you not buying him a new one against you. It's his fault, but I know kids have a hard time understanding that.

Oh, I'm NOT buying another one. My stress levels are too hight to play that game even if he tries to blame me for his unhappiness. I am already losing weight again. I've lost even more this week. I'm not adding the inability to feed myself on top of the inability to digest.
