Oliver had been assigned many tasks, many duties, moving up from simple cleaning shifts to working with data, to performing many of the procedures himself under the hunters he worked with. But this was the first time he had been assigned patrol duty. This was his first time going to the haunted house, and he was terrified.

Thankfully the intermediate who he had been assigned to was someone considerate, who could understand his hesitations.

"I-it's really foggy out there," Oliver said in a tremulous tone, turning away from the window to see what Finn was doing. His only hope of avoiding a complete panic was to follow by example. Sure he had been warned about the haunted house, it's misty gardens and shifting rooms, but the unsettled feeling just kept growing. "Are we just… uh… Just making sure things are quiet? W-we won't see anything dangerous, will we?"

Of all of the times Finn had been put on Haunted House duty, this had to be the worst. Most of the time, he was sent on his own, and that he could more than handle. There was no responsibility to anybody but himself, no guilt if he walked away, no reason to care. But no, instead, this time he was partnered up with somebody that he would be responsible for, that he couldn't just walk away from.

Or rather...shouldn't walk away from.

Sigh.

But he took it all in stride, giving the younger man a clap on the back before they were heading through the portal, before guiding him through the hallways of the house.

"Of course we might see something dangerous." He wasn't going to sugar coat it. Why should he? Just to lull the poor idiot into a false sense of security? What good would that even do?

"Do you know how many times Ripley has come out of this place just to be taken straight to the infirmary? Horsemen come here, and other creatures that don't appreciate humans very much." Strong creatures. Finn could attest to that.

He than glanced through the window himself. "I've never gone out there."

-----------------------

Somewhere outside of the Haunted House, a young zomboil named Alexander was stalking around, muttering something under his breath about this damned house again. He couldn't figure out why the structure so often felt the need to drag him into it's clutches, especially after he swore off coming here ever again, for good this time.

Yet here he was, wandering around in the fog, searching for the exit that had disappeared the moment he had entered through it, obscured by billows of fog and then simply...gone. He had to wonder if the House wanted him here again because he had spilled so much blood before. He had to wonder if that was the only way it was going to let him go again.

With a barely audible sound of disgust, he stopped at the front doors to the house, the only doors he had seen since arriving, and shambled up the steps to push them open.

He honestly didn't feel like he had much other choice.

Moments later, Alexander was shuffling along through the house, sniffing at the air, searching for the humans he could only assume were located somewhere inside.

Might as well give the house what it wanted so he could go home, right?

Some hunters might have disapproved of Finn's blunt attitude with such a delicate, skittish trainee. But rather than dislike the guy for it, Oliver found it reassuring in it's own way. Sure the possible outcomes were always worse than he had hoped, and that was terrifying, but at least he knew what he was getting into. Finn wouldn't leave him unprepared for that worst case scenario.

"D-do you often see dangerous things?" Oliver corrected, now thinking about his chance of avoiding said dangerous scenarios. "I-is it safer in the house?"

Just as he was speaking, his ears caught a faint sound. It could have been the house creaking. It was probably the house creaking. Or it was just his imagination, hearing things because he was terrified of hearing things. Or... it was something dangerous. He froze.

"Did you... hear that?" Oliver whispered, in a tiny nervous voice. He crept anxiously over to one of the large doors in the hallway and pressed his ear against it. No, he was probably just imagining it... Yet he couldn't bring himself to open it and make sure.

"I've only ever met up with anything in here twice." He admitted. "And the first one started out aggressive, but I managed to calm her down. She looked human. Actually, she was pretty damn hot." Finn smirked, still looking out the window at the swirls of fog but turning away from it now.

"The second time was some freak that looked like somebody had gotten it on with a seahorse and had a baby. He said he was a demon. I didn't really let him do much talking after that." No, instead Finn had beaten the creature into the ground, making a massacre of his back afterwards.

"But that just means I've gotten luck---" He stopped, head tilting to the side. Whatever Oliver had heard, Finn thought that he had heard it too.

"Wait here, Princess. I'll check it out." He didn't wait for any reply or protests, weapon summoned as he made his way down the hall and around a corner, towards where the sound was coming from.

----------------------

It took a while, but eventually, Alexander caught the familiar scent that he was searching for. His stomach clenched tightly at the delicious smell that invaded his nostrils, but he fought to control that craving. He didn't want to lose control here, not again. Losing control could be dangerous. Losing control could land him in more trouble than he was aware of, and the last thing he needed was to be taken down by a group of hunters where he thought there might only be one or two. He didn't want to end up an unwilling victim of their weaponization chamber.

He followed the scent, but carefully so, stopping at a corner when he heard voices drifting out from around it.

He listened in to the conversation, though it seemed rather one sided at the moment. Clearly there was more than one there. He waited, a look of disgust crossing his features at the hunters words. He waited, and when he heard footfalls wandering off, in the opposite direction of where Alexander stood, he peeked around the corner.

There was only one. The other was gone.

He moved out from where he had been hiding.

"Princess?" He asked, amused, flashing yellowed rotting teeth in a grin as dead eyes fell down upon the hunter he had found. "That's quite an insult. He must not like you very much."

He came into full view, all 6'5" of him, and reached up a hand, cracking the skeletal bones of his knuckles one by one with his thumb, a sharp crack cutting through the air with each.

Although the answer was a bit of a relief, the pause was not. Oliver had been hoping it was all in his mind. Wouldn't it be easier if Finn laughed him off, and told him to man up and stop acting like a scared rabbit?

"Ah, Finn? A-are you sure I shouldn't come with you?" He asked nervously, fidgeting with his hands. But he couldn't even fool himself into believing it would be better to have him nearby, he was definitely not good backup, and Finn would have an awful lot of paperwork to do if he died on the Moon hunter's mission... So he struggled against his own sense of insecurity and let Finn walk off.

His nerves were wound as tight as they could be when he heard that voice behind him, and as he whirled around the glowing axe was in his hand. Fearsome, except for the sheer terror in it's wielder's eyes. This had to be Oliver's worst nightmare, a zombie. A HUGE zombie. And if it was a zombie that could speak, it was probably a zombie that could run. Runners were the worst.

Oliver pointed his weapon in the zombie's direction, and took a shaky step backwards. "F-Finn? Finn!" he stammered nervously, trying to call the other hunter back.

Finn had waved Oliver silent before he disappeared around the corner, but the second he did he stopped.

The stretch of hallway in front of him looked exactly like the stretch that he had just left behind, only he seemed to be facing it from the opposite way and well....There was no Oliver in sight, which indicated that it must have been a different hallway, regardless of how it appeared (There were windows, on the opposite wall of the hallway he just left behind. Logically that should not have been possible). Whatever noise had been following had gone completely silent as well. In fact, everything had gone eerily silent! He couldn't hear his own breathing, his own foot steps as he tentatively took a few steps forward, his boot heels not making their usual clomping sound against the wooden floorboards. When he opened his mouth to call out, there was nothing but silence.

He turned around, and headed back the way he came, rounding the corner he had only just come from.

.........Another hallway. This one with no windows at all.

"Hello?" He called out.

Well....At least his voice had come back?

But s**t, how the ******** was he supposed to find Oliver? He pulled out his phone.

----------------------------

Alexander cocked his head at the shorter hunter curiously, a large smile spreading across his lips. He was still cracking each of his skeletal knuckles, one at a time, as the boil drew his weapon and pointed it at him.

"Finn?" He asked.

Crack.

"Is that the one that left you here, alone?"

Crack.

"The one that called you Princess?"

Crack

He let his hand drop, and he rolled his shoulders, while simultaneously rolling his head from side to side on his neck, the stitches that held it in place pulling taut. From the wound on his neck, slow, black, congealed looking blood began to trickle. It stank of rot.

"All right, hunter. Let's get this over with."

And then he lunged, swiping at the hunter with fingers curled into claws, his fingernails ragged, he was intent on grabbing a hold of any part of the boil that he could reach, and squeezing tight with his death grip.

Oliver heard the notification from his pocket, most likely Finn telling him to 'calm the ******** down' or something equally disparaging. Whatever it was, the kid had something more important to keep his eye on. It was horrifying, being face to face with a real live dead person, the way it's skeletal hand moved without tendons or flesh, and it's neck…

It was almost funny right then, how the zombie could speak, but Oliver's own throat was too tight to utter a sound. Save for the yelp of fright as the zombie lunged at him. He could not jerk back quickly enough to avoid the lunge entirely, the creature's nails scraped against his shield in the attempt to grab him.

"S-stay a-away!" Oliver squeaked, his first axe swing fuelled by panic.

Finn received no reply from Oliver and hissed a curse, unsure if the younger man just didn't see it or if he was in some kind of trouble. The moon intermediate thought that he'd better be in some kind of trouble, because if he wasn't Finn was going to raise hell with him.

Really not sure at all how he was going to get back to the life trainee, Finn just began to walk, in hopes that at some point the house would lead him back to where he had started.

---------------

Alex was off to a not so great start, his ragged nails slipping over the hunters Fear shield and not finding a grip like he had first intended, allowing the white coated human boil a chance to catch him with the blade of his axe, which sent him stumbling back a pace or two.

The zomboil gave the hunter an angry glare, and if the life trainee was paying close attention, he would see the soft, green fog that seemed to well up around the zomboil, rolling up his body from his feet and beginning to conglomerate and thicken around his hands. Instantly the air around the zomboil began to stink horribly of rotting flesh and decay, a strong and almost overpowering scent that was sure to make breathing suddenly quite difficult.

He lifted his hands, and the green fog rolled off of them and towards Oliver in a thick wave of disgusting stench, something meant to make him gag, to make his eyes water, to make him incapable of attacking for long enough to let Alex do some real damage.

When it seemed safe to do so, he approached, and swung his fists, one towards Oliver's mid section, the other a left hook directed at the side of the hunters face.

The fog itself only lasted long enough for those two attacks before it began to dissipate and fade, taking it's foul smell with it.

Oliver might have seen the green fog coming, but he was almost too paralyzed by fear to get himself out of the way. Almost. He stepped back at the first signs of the foul stench, and then suddenly he was surrounded with rotting air. Not the pleasant plant decay he had become familiar with living in northern Ontario, but the heavy, choking odour of a rotting animal. It was stronger than he had ever experienced before, as though he had been buried in rotting corpses, sickly and gangrenous and foul corpses.

The boy just barely kept his axe levelled at the zombie as he choked and raised one arm to cover his face. Throwing up would have been a relief, the taste of vomit in the back of his throat would be preferable if it could only mask the disgusting rot. When the zombie struck, it caught him unprepared as he struggled against the stench.

Hand to hand combat was not something Oliver had been trained for, the first blow had him bent over in pain, the second sent him reeling. Somehow he kept from falling, and when he turned back to the undead thing in front of him it was turned into extra momentum for the swing of his axe.

Oliver might not have been used to hand to hand combat, but Alexander was pretty much the opposite. Hunters weapons had always annoyed him (especially those of the gun like persuasion), their very existence like an unfair advantage against those who wielded no such thing for themselves. Maybe if he had an artifact, he would feel differently on the subject, but for now, all he had were fists and dirty nails and teeth up to go up against a gigantic ax. All he had were the moves that Yin had taught him, and what he had learned himself from experience.

Hopefully, it would be enough.

The swing was hard enough to send him stumbling to one side but Alex was nothing if not persistent and unrelenting. He was back on the young man (who was probably the same age as the zomboil, actually) within a heart beat, lunging with one hand to grab for his jackets sleeve, the other balled into a fist that he aimed straight for the hunters face, his stained teeth bared, opening just enough to click shut with an audible, and likely ominous, snap.

This zombie was terrifying. Oliver could barely bring anything to mind, the panicked fight for his life overwhelmed any attempts at rational thought and fighting strategy. He couldn't turn and run fast enough. He couldn't even back up fast enough.

The blow struck him hard once again, but all pain aside, it was mostly a game of momentum. The zombie was closer this time, and the axe swung harder. A coherent thought briefly crossed the boy's mind. It was too bad his opponent was too tall for that to have been a head-shot.

The next blow from the ax was more than a little staggering. It sent Alex stumbling back, his head snapping back and cracking against the nearest wall (hallways made for terrible battle locations at times). It was enough to daze him, so that when he staggered away and lunged again, this time with teeth bared and opened, ready to snap down on whatever part of the hunter he could reach, he missed entirely, lurching by and right into the other wall.

Woops.

Meanwhile, somewhere, Finn was still pretty much just wandering aimlessly through endless hallways.

Oliver had one second to blink stupidly at the success of his attack before the survival instincts kicked in once more. He levelled the weapon at the fearsome opponent and with a mechanical click and a hiss of steam, unleashed the chilling charge attack. Unfortunately Jökul's fierce blast of energy just barely nicked the staggering zombie. Even the house itself seemed mostly unharmed by the attack.

By the time he managed to turn around again, his ears caught the sound of hissing steam and he knew, he just knew that meant that something hot and possibly fire like was going to come blasting his way.

Fortunately, it was not fire, but it was close enough. Blind panic sent him rolling to the side against the wall, and he managed to avoid getting badly burned by whatever it was that the hunters weapon had sent towards him. Eyes wide, he pushed away from the wall, lunging towards the hunter in question, hands up to shove at his shoulders in an attempt to send him stumbling to the floor.

Oliver would never again be able to watch a movie with fast zombies. Not only could they run at you and chase you down... but they could dodge your attacks and not have their heads blown off by supernatural weapons.

The young trainee let out a loud shout as he was shoved, the attack had happened too quickly for him to bring his weapon up in between them, not until he was already on the floor. His swing felt constrained by the hallway's dimensions, but if he could only keep that axe between himself and the zombie...
