There's no note this time; you wake up in the middle of the night to find yourself standing at the entrance to an enormous maze. Towering hedges stretch on for what seem like forever, and you have no idea where at school you even are, but it seems like every time you try to step backwards, you can't. Your footsteps only carry you forwards, to the maze.

"Greetings," says a voice to your left, and when you turn you can see a pale haired man with sharp teeth smiling genially at you. "My name is Professor Zephron; I'm the Potions Professor here at school, and I'm here to guide you through your exam."

He gestures towards the maze. "It's simple, really - all you have to do is get through the maze. I'll be waiting on the other side with your certificate, so come find me, okay?"

And with a grin, he shifts into a monstrous emerald hellhound and darts away, deep into the maze.

Well. Guess you better get started!

THE EXAM
There are two parts to this exam! You must complete both in order to successfully complete it!

PART 1: COUNTING STEPS

You need to get to 30 steps in order to get to Part 2! At each milestone passed there will be a small status effect, so make sure you're reading them carefully!

  • Roll 1d12 with each post to see how many steps you go!
  • At 5 steps you realize the world has tipped and you are now walking upside down. It doesn't hurt, but it sure feels weird...
  • At 10 steps you're right side up again, but it's like you're walking through thick mud, though you see none. Your legs feel heavier than normal.
  • At 15 steps your legs feel okay, but now the maze keeps going in circles around you and it's starting to make you feel kind of sick...
  • At 20 steps (thankfully) the world has stopped spinning, but you realize that somehow you've shrunk. Or maybe the maze has just gotten bigger.
  • At 25 steps, you seem to be your normal size again, but it's so cold and so windy it's almost as though you're being pushed backwards.
  • At 30 steps, you seem to have finally made it through almost the entire maze. In fact, you think you can see the door up ahead, except...

    Except....

PART 2: THE FIGHT

As you near the end of the maze, something huge blocks your way - a dark shadow that has been lurking ever since you started walking. It looms in front of you and seems to want to deny you passageway - but you've already come this far, you're not going to let a little shadow get in your way!

Except as the shadow moves closer, it shifts form - and suddenly you're facing not a shadow, but yourself; except wispy tendrils of black are seen emanating from the fingers and toes, even the eyes upon occassion.

    How...weird.

  • Your shadow self has 50 HP.
  • Use standard attack dice to kill it (2d8 - 6)!
  • It does 2 autodamage for every successful attack. If you miss, you don't take autodamage!
  • You are allowed to use FEARS!

Upon dissipation of your shadow self, you finally reach the end of the maze and burst through. An emerald colored hellhound sits beneath a nearby tree, looking as pleased as pie. When you walk nearer, he shifts form and the Professor comes into view again, raking blonde hair out of his eyes. There is a stack of parchments beside him; Certificates of Exam Completion.

"Congrats," he says pleasantly, and bends to pick up one of the parchments. He hands it to you with a smile. "Welcome to Hob level."

Seiji didn't often dream. As a ghost he didn't often sleep unless he was curled up with Junko, soaking in her warmth. It wasn't something he needed, but something to be enjoyed. Apparently he'd slept over at the ghoul's apartment, or she'd stayed with him on campus, but he couldn't actually recall.

He stood at the edge of what looked like a maze, tall hedge walls and eerie darkness. It wasn't exactly inviting. Wariness had him wanting to step away from it, to put distance between it and himself, but every step he tried to make carried him forward instead, and he was forced to accept that the only way out of this was through. In his experience at Amity thus far, he felt he had good reason to be cautious.

Slowly, he started forward, into the maze, eyes and ears straining.

He didn't know when it happened--there hadn't been any obvious flip, no vertigo, nothing that he could remember--but at a certain point the boil blinked, startled, as he realized he was walking upside down. Though he could feel solidness beneath him, his feet didn't appear to be anchored to anything, and tipping his head back let him see nothing but a stretch of green grass between the edges of hedgerows.

It was utterly disconcerting, but he had already committed to moving forward, so upside down or not, he continued onward. This was probably just the tip. There would be more fun waiting for him farther on.

Things carried on like this for a little longer. Seiji upside down, feet attached to nothing, with hair and clothing hanging awkwardly around him.

He knew better than to let his guard down, though.

The ghost was aware when the world righted itself again, but only because he was watching for it. It was a flawless reversal, one he'd have missed again, because the only discernible difference was the normal settle of clothes and hair. It would have been a relief, if not for the next step feeling as if his legs were being sucked down towards the ground.

Every step was a challenge, like wading through mud that was knee deep, and even if he didn't get tired like most living beings, it was still hard. He struggled through it, almost wishing things would just flip again so he could walk unhindered.

Of course he had to be careful what he wished for. The maze did flip, but this time it appeared to be spinning around him with each move he made, and if being upside down hadn't been disorienting enough, this actually made his stomach flip uncomfortably.

When everything stilled again the ghost let out an unneeded sigh of relief, and a hand went out to rest against the dense side of the hedge, only to find it wasn't there as he almost toppled over. "The hell?" It was...quite a ways away, both sides were, and considerably taller than he remembered them being. It had the boil squinting up, eyes narrowing, as he realized what fresh bullshit he was faced with now.

Shrunk, it would take him a hell of a lot longer to reach the end of the maze, and he let out a heartfelt curse as he started forward again, lamenting, for the first time, his inability to fly.

Eventually it seemed as though the walls of the maze were shortening, growing closer, and Seiji might have been happy, if not for the icy wind that came with the return of normal size.

The cold didn't bother him, but the wind itself was strong, and even as big as he was, as dense, he had to fight against it.

There it was!

He could see the end, the door, just up ahead, and he fought against the wind trying to push him back. This dream was stupid, he was ready for it to end.

Then he saw it, the shadow. Just at the corner of his vision, it drifted closer as the wind died, hovering at the end of the path that lead to the exit. For a moment the ghost stood there, watching it, then, with an impatient growl, he marched forward.

But it didn't move. It didn't do anything. Not until he got closer. Then that dark shadow morphed, thinning out, growing taller, until he was looking at a replica of himself done all in black. "Great.

"I really don't have the patience for this right now." It came out in a growl.

Seiji darted in, arm drawn back, and hit the shadow double square in the chin with a wild upper cut. It knocked them back, made them stagger, but they didn't feel pain the way he did, and balance was regained all too quickly. A slash across his arm let him know the double had his claws as well.

Another swipe, and Seiji was cursing. Two could play the claw game. Dark fingers stretched, elongating and sharpening into blades. He slashed out at the shadow, catching them across the chest, but the cut was shallow.

It was going to take a long time to whittle the shadow away to nothing if it kept dodging like that...

It was a good thing Seiji was a ghost, or this would be really tiring.

Gathered up fear was only as good as it's wielder. Seiji tried not to think about that too much as his attack whistled past the shadow's shoulder. "Jack damnit."

Maybe a little noxious gas would prove effective? Seiji opened his mouth, wide, spreading expelling poisonous fog around the both of them.

There was every chance it wouldn't do a damnit hing to the shadow, since the ghost himself was immune...
