They were here for research, with no real intent to engage: Ever and two other techs, armed with supplies for gathering samples. They had a bundle of test tubes, scrapers, pluckers, a carefully-sealed bag. He had a notebook, charcoal, a camera that might-or-might-not work in times of crisis, because he was looking for writing.

Someone along the way had, certainly, failed to describe exactly how dangerous the dangers of the haunted house were. Even as the three of them stepped inside, the fog swirling around their ankles and dimming their surroundings, even with the sounds of something moving in the fog, somewhere around the third pointless room the three of them came to a halt for a quiet conversation.

It ended in the worst move.

They split up.

They could cover more ground that way.

And besides, if they ever encountered real trouble, three words would take them out again.

It had been a long time since the mare had ventured anywhere near the school, let alone the haunted house. They had a home now, somewhere that belonged to them, and the reserve was nothing more than a stepping stone in their path to greater things. A memory, dark, but not without it's silver lining.

The voices were gentler now, softer. A gentle murmur that seldom pushed past the blissful haze of a happy life, but on occasion the whispers rose up, sweet and beckoning, and the priestess could not help but listen.

Home. Come home. There is power here. We will share it.

It didn't matter that she had a home now, the Insanity fought against logic. She went willingly, eagerly into that fog.

Bare feet were soundless against the cracked and creaking floorboards. Delicate and dark, she was a living shadow. Ethereal, other. She prowled through the endless halls of the house with a serene smile on ducky lips, mismatched eyes half lidded. She could hear them, the falls of boot clad feet, the shuffle of fabric, the rush of air with each breath. Not a student, not another horseman.

"Human..."

The word was a whisper on the air and, in this place, it carried: filled Ever's ears for a moment and distracted him from his focus on carvings in the wall. Hard to tell if they were decorative or desperate, but he'd been trying. Now he was turning, trying to find the source.

She wasn't in sight, but he could feel her somewhere there, like a prickle down his spine, some old instinct that picked up his heartbeat --

"Hello?" And, after a pause, he raised his voice higher, clicking the pen in his hand. "...Ben?"

Not the tech, then, and in the back of his mind, he could feel Amory shaking his head.

The serenity in her smile seeped away as that voice rose up, calling out, and she followed it, fingertips trailing along the wall until she found the source. "Guess again."

The first thing she saw was the white hair, and delicate features contoured in rage, twisting into something feral and inhuman as heterchromic eyes narrowed up at him. "You." The word dripped in malice, fine and burning, as she glided into the room, seemingly unarmed, clothed in flouncing layers of soft ruffles. Elegant and simple, Lovely, were it not for the curl of lips that bared white teeth.

She remembered another white haired hunter, the unsure look in his eyes, and the piece of the arrow that had left a hole in her shoulder. He'd beaten her, bloodied her, left her for dead, and the mare of course had never forgotten. No no, she never forgot.

Oh, but wait...

This one was taller, thinner. The eyes were different, the nose, the bone in his face. Similar, but not the same. It pulled a growl from that delicate throat before the sound cut off abruptly and crazed features sobered, stony. "Not Ben," she finally crooned, stalking further into the room.

The white of Ever's coat whipped about him as he twisted in place again, eyes settling on Nergui -- and, instinctively, he went still. Big predators usually saw through movement, and that was the well-ingrained thought that stole his movement for long enough that the horseman was now in the room and blocking his path back out...

He swallowed, his mouth moving without thought as he struggled for something to say. The pen in his hand wasn't much of a weapon and, in the moment, it didn't occur to him to pull out something real. Perhaps that was wise. It would have provoked her into action.

"...do I know you?" He tried to make it sound civilized, calm, tried not to flick dark eyes toward the door in search of escape. Just a nice conversation between two folks.

The question had the mare chuckling, low and throaty. "Oh Goddess, no." It was comical really, the notion. Few humans lived through the encounter, and she remembered them all. This was not one of her lucky survivors, but a new play things.

"You look like one I've crossed paths with, though." A passing resemblance, easy to mistake on a glance, but not the archer.

Disappointingly.

Closer still, a dark hand extended to touch the tips of fingers to his chest, pressing, as if she meant to back him into the wall. "Do you know what I am?"

It worked, at least: made Ever ease back one step, struggling to avoid those outstretched fingers and, as a result, putting himself at a distinctive tactical disadvantage. He wasn't yet thinking enough to recognize it, though.

Horseman, thought Amory, and Ever made a sound. Cigarette case suddenly in one hand. Still non-threatening, maybe, but --

"I have...some experience." Beneath her touch, his heart was hammering, but on the surface he could still be insouciant.

Her smile might have been pretty if not for that cold light in half glowing eyes. She smiled up at him, lips pursed, as he backed away from her hand, and still she advanced, closing in until there were barely inches between his pale figure and her own.

"Do you?" Curiosity kept her threatening, but non violent. At least for now. If he'd encountered a horseman before, Nergui wanted to know about it. The tips of her fingers walked up his chest, barely the brush of a gentle touch. "Tell me."

She hadn't missed the curl of fingers around metal. Not a weapon, not yet, but she was aware.

"...you know, it's just...the normal." She advanced and he backed up, until wood settled behind his back -- and Ever jumped, flinched, like it had attacked him. Like it hadn't just been the wall, against his spine. His hand clenched around the cigarette case.

Calm, child. A deep breath. Don't let the tiger know you're afraid.

But Ever was fairly sure she already knew.

"Have you ever faced death?" The irony had her biting back a giggle.

Small fingers settled on his chest as she leaned in, drawing in a deep breath with closed eyes. Then she very nearly sagged, head down and knees weak, before looking up at him again through heavy lids and thick lashes. Intoxicated, almost, until lips drew back in a cruel smile. "You stink of Fear."

There were flashing runes to serve as warning, only the sudden press of a warm blade against the inside of his thigh.

"s**t -- " He didn't even think, this time; in an instant, Amory went from cigarette case to twin swords which Ever used to swipe her blade away -- and, as a result, catch her across the wrist. At least he moved as he did, tried to get himself un-pinned, so he could run, if he needed to.

"Bad touch, lady, you're not my type." It was joking, but he looked pale.

"Two against one," she hummed, gaze flicking down to the dainty nick on her wrist before snapping back up. "You think that's really fair?" As if she ever cared much about battles being fair. Chuckling, she adjusted her grip on her sabre, pivoting on one bare foot to follow his movements.

The tip of a finger ghosted along the dark edge of her blade, then she was drawing it up over her head, lunging forward, to bring it down in a wide arch across his torso.

It was always disappointing, in the beginning, when their shields were strong and they didn't bleed. Not like normal humans. You had to whittle away at the hunters, hacking and slashing until that precious shield crumbled and broke, and then, the look of terror in wide eyes before the final act. One last delicious instance of fear before they faded, dull, to so much useless meat.

Ever had no desire to fight a crazy horseman, and so his focus was elsewhere: Nergui a mild distraction at the edge of his senses as he struggled to find a way toward the door. When he brought his weapon up again it was defensive, but not focused.

He wouldn't thoroughly succeed in deflecting her blow. "I'm...just looking around."

"You thank that matters to me?" She laughed, moving swiftly to the side to cut off his retreat. "I don't care. Your kind is a blight that must be eradicated."

She slashed at him again, at him arm. A superficial little wound. Merely toying with him.

"Lady --" He focused on her this time, a frown on his face as he crossed sword and sheath in front of himself, trying to stop the blow from landing on him. Ever's expression was frustrated, now, eyes sharp as they met hers, and at last [perversely] some of the fear went out of him.

"I can just go home. Or we can do this for real."
