Rolling a 4: NO HEALING IS ALLOWED IN BATTLE. Someone is whispering to you about something, but you can't place out what, it is hard to focus. Everything distracts you, even the tiniest flash of light or flicker of movement.

There were occasions where Merry's explorations landed her in unknown places, but this was a little extreme. She recalled climbing up to the roof of the school, poking around air vents and pipes, then the cool brush of fog along her ankles. It hadn't seemed thick, at first, but a minute later she couldn't see a damn thing but the pale grey of the mist around her.

When it had cleared she'd found herself standing in the center of a broken down room she didn't recognize. Not a classroom, not any dorm she'd ever seen, but something different. New.

"Hmm." Possibly, she should have been on edge, given the abrupt change of scenery with no discernible cause, but the chimera took things in stride. Now she was curious, keen to explore, and she made her slow way around the room, wings neat against her back, looking at all the dust covered odds and ends that rested on the shelves drilled into the wall paper peeling walls.

Even for a full hunter, venturing unaccompanied into the Haunted House wasn't exactly wise. But Taym felt fairly confident in his ability to extricate himself from a bad situation, and had rationalized that besides that he'd be facing threats alone in the field more and more often now. Hiding in the infirmary was all well and good as far as it went, but that wasn't especially far.

And he was, besides, feeling reckless and restless, caged by his inability to step in and help his daughter and longing to lash out elsewhere. Any sort of valve. Any sort of relief.

He'd felt rather than saw her, that animal awareness of some nearby presence, the quiet disturbances too small for the conscious eye but enough to pile up, although he was finding it more and more difficult to focus on them. A voice in his ear suggested--he missed it, he wasn't sure.

He moved with his usual catlike stealth until she came into view, his thumb twisting Fionnghal around his finger. The parts of her that were human, redhaired and shapely, did not serve to make him less inclined to violence. They only fueled his hatred for her, for what she represented, for their tendency to ape his kind as if they were a costume.

Fiona's runes were a sudden light, and maybe ordinarily this would have been fine, but there was something tense and nervous in the air, and the light caught the dust and swirling motes and seemed altogether too bright, and he paused, confused and disoriented.

For as unconcerned as the ghoul was, she still had the keen senses of something wild. A sound, even faint, brought a twitch of pale ears, though it could have been anything in the crumbling old house. What was most assuredly out of place was the smell. Living, though not any being she'd ever crossed paths with, she straightened, scenting the air as he crept up behind her.

She was turning before the blaze of runes dazzled her eyes and inspired a startled his. Hands up, she pressed palms against closed lids, pressing until darkness ate at the white spots that had sprung up. A handful of of seconds, maybe, and after a rough rub she dropped her hands, blinking at the figure across from her as he came back into focus. "Jack damn, that s**t's murder on night sight."

Another rub, then a brush of bright bangs back behind an ear. "What are you, anyways?" Colorful lips fell into a thoughtful pout as she looked him over. "Reaper? Are you a boogeyman?" Clearly the ghoul had never encountered a human before, let alone a Hunter. Merry frowned, looking down at the weapon, before glancing up at that so serious face.

He didn't look very friendly.

he is gonna try don't expect it to stick lol

He didn't have the right kind of curiosity, and now that he was no longer in Death he also lacked the right kind of motivation. This one was ignorant. Rationally he had a duty to himself and to the organization not to simply use her as glorified target practice. She could be more useful otherwise. His fingers flexed with longing around the hilt of the knife.

No one would know. No one would ever know but him. But that was often the problem.

"What are you?" he shot back instead of answering. "And what are you doing here?" he added, thinking this might shift the power balance some, if she was already questioning whether he was a boogeyman.

Her head tilted at the question, plush ears flicking forward. "I'm a jungle chimera." That was the easy question to answer, and not at all unusual. Merry's kind rarely left the tribe, so her kind weren't as well known as most. As if to make it more clear the colorful wings at her back arched, stretching in a rainbow of bright feathers before folding up neatly against her back.

It was harder to give him an answer to his second question, mostly because she wasn't sure how she'd gotten there, or where here actually was. "Dunno. I was walking around the school, and this fog rolled up, and then suddenly I was here." She folded her arms, weight rolling onto one hip as her tail gave a lazy flick around her ankles. "What is this place?"

He hadn't answered her, it made her frown more pronounced.

He wet his lips, absently twirled the knife by the antlered handguard and resettled his fingers a little more intently.

"So you--"

He paused, head whipping around towards some noise that wasn't there, and when he returned his attention to her it was with a suspicious look.

"Walking around alone?" he demanded.

No one would know. No one would ever know but him. But that was often the problem. Fiona's presence in the back of his head was wary, tense, and too hungry to lecture.

The general ease with which Merry operated on was starting to fade. She didn't like how much he was handling that weapon, or how twitchy he seemed to be. And she certainly didn't like how very much it mattered to him if she'd been alone before arriving in the house.

So red eyes narrowed, slightly, as she looped one finger around another. Gaze flicking past his shoulder towards the door before snapping back. "Um." This just didn't feel right. Something seemed off. "Kinda. I was gunna meet my boilfriends." Another look over his shoulder. "I should probably get back, actually. Don't want to make them wait."

For a moment she'd thought maybe he was a professor, that just seemed unlikely. He didn't seem all that teachery.

Flashing a quick smile she made a move, as if she would slip around him, so she could head for the door.

He barked a little incredulous laugh, and there was nothing of his twitching unease in the predatory grace of the way he moved, all speed and instant reflex, blocking her way.

"Your boyfriends," he repeated mockingly. "Well, it's good to see that old chestnut's universal. And just as transparent here as it is out there."

And then, easily, immediately, in a swing as quick as the strike of a snake, the blade bit deep into FEAR and flesh, Fiona's satisfaction a blossoming relief but pale in comparison to his own. It was all the violent pleasure of the sparring grounds with none of the guilt. He wanted to let the knife go and sink his bare fist into her face. Instead he just laughed again.

She didn't understand his tone, but she didn't like it. It had her scowling at him, a low growl curling out past parting lips as he stepped in the way to block her exit. It cut off abruptly as he struck, slicing a deep cut across her chest that ran red and left her snarling as she jerked away from him.

Now instinct took over. She hissed at him, baring dainty little fangs, a continuous, angry growl filling the air as she stalked, pacing, from side to side.

He was a threat, and she reacted accordingly. A lunge, the swipe of claws, though all she hit was the hilt of his weapon. Missing, not out of inexperience, but the fear that came with facing the first real danger to cross your path.

"Don't go in there alone," said the stranger, in the taunting, sing-song voice one used for imitating other people. "It's dangerous! If only," he spat, going in for a vicious stab, as brutal as the first swipe and far less elegant, her hissing and claws spurring him towards something more animal.

"I didn-!" The words died abruptly as the Hunter dashed in, plunging that long blade into snowy flesh. Merry froze, eyes gone wide, as pale hands came up to press against her stomach, crimson flowing between them, over them, beneath them--dribbling down over her hip to soak into the top of her shorts. She coughed, cringing, and a low pain sound escaped before she bite it off and turned it into a growl, threatening and half desperate.

But there was blood on her lips, and her motions were slow, labored, as she attempted to retaliate, swiping claws falling short. Jack, it hurt! Why hadn't anyone warned her?

"What are you?"

The ease of it was ruining his pleasure somewhat, as was the blood--it was disturbing, even pouring out of something that wasn't human; the only time blood hadn't alarmed him had been when it was crawling desperately out of the stump of a neck that looked liked his and wasn't.

He nipped back, nimble as a cat, and twirled Fionnghal amiably around his fingers before holding the knife up demonstratively. "This used to be a thing like you, sort of. She decided she was on the wrong side."

Us vs. Them. The best thing: a cause to rally to, another to rail against. Let America say what she would, things like the creature in front of him were just a weaker version of Nest, of Lurks, as near as he could tell. The only ones worth saving had made the decision to turncoat, like Fiona had, and maybe it would have been nobler to present her with the option. Maybe it would have been truer to his duties as a Hunter to sweet-talk her, to get her back at the island like someone had with Aleria.

"We're not all bad," he assured her with a grin as yellow-toothed as a wolf's. "Some of my colleagues are pretty sympathetic, actually. You just got me on a bad day."

Taym spent a lot of energy aspiring to nobility. It was so nice, so pleasant, to just engage in the vicious joy of violence. And he wasn't sure when but he'd gotten so good at it. The attacks flowed like water, easy and uninterrupted.

Too easy. And too much blood. With a jovial, almost clowning motion he tossed Fionnghal over to his right hand so that he could reel back with a closed fist instead.

He was talking, answering her question(maybe), but she wasn't really processing what he was saying. There was a ringing in her ears that nearly drowned everything else out, and her stomach was bleeding, the pain sharp enough to hunch her shoulders, make her shake. She felt sick, but was afraid vomiting would bring up more than her lunch.

Dazed, she brought her hands up from the wound, looking at crimson stained fingers, before the man's voice pulled wide eyes back to him, and she watched uncomprehending as he cocked a fist back before slamming it into her jaw to send her reeling backwards.

Darkness ate at her vision in blotches, and if not for her back hitting a wall, she'd have dropped to the ground and possibly not gotten back up.

But instead she had something to brace against, and as he came closer she brought a leg up, driving it outward blindly, and was rewarded with the feel of
her hoof sinking into the man's body. "Get away!"

The sudden blow to his shield, finally, put him off his balance mid-punch and made the strike laughably easy to avoid. He laughed, but it was strained.

"Where was that a minute ago?" he demanded. Goaded.

He would enjoy this. He would. He would not let this one outlet be taken from him before he'd ever really had a chance to discover it.
