Today was one of the few days Jory would wake up in Zaire's bed alone. Usually they got up at the same time, the larger monster either joining Jory in class, or headed off to the maul for work, but every so often there came a day where the afanc didn't have any classes, but his boilfriend still had to suffer through however long a shift he had at work. He'd roused enough to be aware as Zaire crawled out of bed, drifting off again as the sound of the shower filled the bathroom. Then again as the mahamba had bent to lay a soft kiss on his temple, murmuring a goodbye before heading out.

Now, a few hours later, Jory was finally crawling out of the warmth and familiar comfort of Zaire's blankets with the intention to head off to the pool for long swim before meeting up with his boilfriend later. He sat up, sheets pooling in his lap, and long stretched long arms as heavy yawn almost sent him crashing over again. He could have just stayed in bed...Zaire wouldn't have blamed him, in fact it would certainly guarantee cuddles as soon as the mahamba had returned, but-

No, Jory just didn't have it in him to waste the day, no matter how comfortable the bed or how much the pillows smelled like dark blue hair. With a grunt he dragged himself up and over to the dresser drawer he'd been allowed to take over, grabbing a pair of swim trunks. The brown and green shorts would be paired with a white t-shirt, hiding the scar on his side.

Grabbing his towel, he slung it over his shoulders as he let himself out of the room and paused to lock the door behind him.

Just how long exactly would it take for things to go back to some semblance of how they were before the one whom you thought you were going to be with forever came into your life?

Day after day, Helki would ask himself that. From the moment he woke to drag himself to the classes that he had for the day till he laid his head down on the pillow to fall asleep at night. As the days passed and it became increasingly apparent that Zaire was content to be with Jory and wasn't coming back no matter what happened to him or what he did, the wolf boil found himself spiralling further into despair.

He kept to himself mostly, had no friends here at the academy nor did he care about getting out there and making new ones. He only left his room when it was absolutely necessary and jumped at every little sound he could pick up from Zaire's room that was next to his. Now that he thought about it, it had admittedly been a long while since the last time when he saw both the mahamba and the afanc together at the maul. If they were still together, they definitely would have progressed to more intimate acts than mere hugs, snugs, cuddles and kisses by now.

Even if they had, it wasn't his business. Not anymore.

Helki tried to remind himself repeatedly but to no avail. Perhaps some fresh air would do him some good. He didn't have class today so he figured that now was probably a good time as any to swing by the creepateria to pick up a snack since it was almost lunch. What he wasn't expecting however, was to see Jory right outside his door or rather outside Zaire's door the moment he pulled it open to let himself out. He stopped.

"Where's he? Doesn't he always like hover around you like he's your bodyguard or something?" He couldn't help but snap at the other boil unkindly even if it wasn't something the him of the past could see himself doing.

Jory very nearly dropped his key at the sound of that voice from beside him, and he whipped around, fingers closing around that little bit of metal tight enough for the ridges to dig into his palm. Helki was the last person the afanc wanted to see. He was always the last person Jory wanted to see, because he didn't know what to do with him, how to deal with him. It was very obvious how much the wolf boil still cared for the mahamba, and jory knew Zaire had cared deeply for him, and still held onto a little of that care now.

It made Jory hate him, just a little bit, and Jory didn't hate anyone.

Ears dipping he stared at the other boil for a moment before glancing at the door he'd just emerged from. Helki's tone was scolding, and it made him feel as if he should feel guilty for what he was doing, but that just wasn't fair.

He frowned as he looked down at the wolf again, but the tense set of his shoulders loosened just a bit. Jory had every right to be here, he'd been invited to stay whenever he wanted, how ever long he wanted.

"He's at work," he answered honestly, voice soft but firm. The other question went unanswered, because it wasn't entirely untrue. Zaire was protective, had always been so, and that propensity had increased after Jory's run in with the hunter in that awful Haunted House.

Zaire? Work?

Helki shut the door behind him, an unreadable expression crossing his face as he puzzled over Jory's answer. He was lying. He had to be for the mahamba boil he knew during the time when the both of them were together was both a sloth and a glut and hardly lifted a claw to do anything unless he was prodded to or left with no other options.

But that... was provided that he still was the boil whom Helki knew from back then. Creeple changed. Over time. Even if he refused to acknowledge and accept that Zaire had decided to move on to someone else like the afanc who stood before him. Who reeked of fear just like he had the first time they ran into each other at the maul.

Not at all caring if what he was about to do was rude, the wolf boil closed the distance between them and sniffed both at the air and Jory from the other boil's head to his torso before pulling back with a scowl. "His scent... it's all over you." The signs were all there. They were staying together in the same room, sharing the same bed. It was as he had suspected all along.

"You've mated." He muttered, a hint of bitterness underlying the tone of his voice as he glared at the afanc with obvious disdain and disapproval. How DARE he even after knowing that Zaire was already taken. Zaire had chosen Helki first. Still cared for him even till this very day. How could he do this. What on Halloween gave him the right to.

He growled, his hands balled up tightly into fists as he tried to keep a tight rein on his own emotions and remain civil. "You're flawed... in so many ways. I don't get what he sees in you." He challenged.

Jory didn't know quite how to respond to that odd expression, so he just sort of stood there, pale eyes turning away from the wolf and off down the hall over the other boil's shoulder. This was awkward, really awkward, and the afanc had never handled tense situations well. Though to his credit, this time around he wasn't quite so hunched. There was a degree of strength there that hadn't been when they'd run into Helki in the maul. That didn't eliminate the fear, but it was still an improvement.

He blinked back into focus as the wolf moved in suddenly, and the boil took a reflexive step back before catching himself and standing his ground, giving a perturbed frown as he was sniffled. It wasn't the first time, Zaire did it often, but that was Zaire. This was different, and as that observation was thrown like an accusation the boil could feel his lip curl, hands balling defensively. "Of course it is." They were boilfriends, they slept in the same bed, shared space, did so many things together.

The second comment, muttered, brought a flush to the afanc's cheeks. The color washed away, leaving him pale and wide eyed for a moment, but he rallied, squaring his shoulders to stare down at the other boil with cool eyes. "Yes. We had before the maul as well," he hissed back, embarrassed and angry. His personal life was personal, it wasn't any of Helki's business! That the wolf had first hand knowledge of the sorts of things he and the mahamba did was even worst.

That anger was temporary though, because as Helki continued it leaked away, and that same, self doubting monster peaked through all that hard earned nerve. He took a step back, brought his arms up to cross over his stomach, and long ears dipped. Jory didn't Helki's opinion, he already knew he was flawed, already didn't understand why Zaire had chosen him, loved him.

"I don't know either," he admitted, voice softening briefly. Then the color started to return to his cheeks and unhappy features sobered. "But he sees something I don't, and he loves me." Maybe Jory couldn't see his own worth, but someone did, and that was worth everything. It didn't matter what Helki thought, the wolf boil didn't mean anything to him.

That was it.

Losing his cool entirely, Helki growled again, the anger that he was feeling twisting his facial expression as he bristled and took a step towards Jory. "How could you? He's mine! I came all the way out here to look for him, to be with him..." His voice faltered for a moment, the memories of all that he had been through from the day that Zaire suddenly disappeared from his life leading to his arrival at Amityville and the surprise that he thought of springing on the mahamba backfiring completely on him surging from his mind then.

With a huff, he straightened his form, trying to look as threatening and imposing as he could be. He couldn't simply stop now and let all that he had worked so hard for come to naught. To realise that what he felt for Zaire would never be reciprocated in kind because the mahamba had had a change of heart and desired the pathetic excuse of a boil that Jory was more than him.

"How long have you been with him anyway? What all have you done for him? How can you even compare with me? You have no right to come between us! You saw it that day right? He still loves me. He's just with you right now because I wasn't around and you were... convenient." He hollered and flailed his arms wildly, looking visibly agitated and almost manic. He was past caring at this point the amount of attention that he was drawing to the both of them with the ruckus that he was creating with his raised voice.

If he could do something to drive Jory away and make the afanc leave Zaire, surely the mahamba would return to his side...

He should have expected the yelling, he really should have, but all the same the boil was startled when Helki rose his voice to him, shouting and taking a step closer. It had Jory backing right up against Zaire's door again, and his hand came back to grope for the knob, for escape. His eyes were wide, lips parted as he pulled in a breath past his teeth, and all at once that fragile calm shattered. An emotional roller coaster. Doubt and anxiety, melting into courage and budding pride, just to have it torn down again by cruel words and accusing eyes.

He found the doorknob, clutched at it tightly, but something kept him from turning it. Some shred of dignity that wouldn't allow him to simply run away from this. He hadn't run the first time, he wouldn't run this time again.

"He's not." His voice started out very unsteady, but the more he spoke the stronger it got. "He told you in the maul, you weren't together anymore." The fingers on the doorknob gave a last panicked squeeze before he forced them away, and he wrapped his arms around himself again, holding at his own elbows. Still shielding, still defensive, but better.

"It's none of your business how long we've been together. None of this is any of your business anymore." Jory could have left it at that, he had every right to it, but there was a part of him that needed to add to it, to validate himself, Zaire, them together. "He loves me. That's why he's with me." Baby blues hardened, glowering down at the smaller boil. Maybe Jory might not have known what Zaire saw in him, but that didn't change what they felt for each other. "If I'm only a convenience, why is he still with me, and not with you instead?"

A twitch of a glance to one side showed a pair of eyes peering at them through a cracked down, then another. Jory stiffened, panic starting to rise even further. He had to get away. Jaw clenched, he stepped away from the door, shouldering his way past Helki to hurry down the hall, heading for the exit.
