Welcome to the official Y1 > Y2 EXAM DUNGEON

An exam is necessary to pass from Y1 to Y2 but the exam can either be this self-run dungeon, or you may post for an NPC run exam here if you would prefer NPC interaction! Whichever you choose is up to you, but you must complete at least one in order to grow / post for growth art!

  • This exam can be taken either solo or with a friend or two!
  • This exam is taken entirely at your own pace! You can take a day, a month, a year, whatever you want!
  • Have fun with it! This is meant to be a good opportunity to delve a little into your character!
  • You can only do this exam if you have met the necessary RP requirements. This is not a take-anytime-and-use-later dungeon!
  • You do not need to pass this exam, you just need to complete it (and meet the 800 word count requirement) for it to count!
  • You must still post for your exam here; just note that you are doing the exam dungeon!
  • GMs will still check to make sure you've completed your reqs, so make sure you've got everything ready!

Again, an exam for passing onto the next year is mandatory, but now you have the option of doing a self-run dungeon or requesting an NPC run exam! Best of luck to you all!

THE EXAM: HOUSE OF HORRORS (Y1 > Y2)

Quote:

Each student ready to move from the first year to the second would find a nice, neatly printed letter taped to their door inviting them to participate in a "Non-Mandatory-But-Highly-Recommended-Anyway Test" (or NMBHRAT for short). A location was provided at the bottom of the note (a section of the grounds, just near the forest), and beneath that the words "Come at anytime."

Upon arrival, you would first notice that a peculiar house has been erected. It's not large enough to overshadow any of the dorms by any means; in fact, it seems rather tiny and shabby in comparison, with the door half stripped of its paint, the windows cracked and smeared with dust, and everything looks as though the merest touch will make it collapse.

At first you wonder if you're in the right place at all, but then you notice a little box sitting just outside of the house. Closer examination would reveal a note, written in a loopy handwriting perhaps familiar to some:

Welcome welcome to the House
Please be quiet as a mouse
The House will tell if you are good
The House will tell if you are bad

Think you're up to face the thing?
If you pass it, all will sing
Do your best, oh fair student
I hope your deaths you do circumvent

THE EXAM
THE HOUSE OF HORRORS

The smell is what gets your attention first; like smoke and old wood, it wafts across the air towards you, enticing you onward, pulling you forward, and you reach the little shabby house and the door half hanging off its hinges, practically begging you to come inside.

A sign posted outside reads "Welcome to the House."

At first, you're mildly concerned but upon knocking stepping inside, you realize that the house in question appears deserted.

Well, that's just creepy. But trying to go backwards only results in failure - the door has locked behind you. You're trapped inside, and now you must figure out how to get through the house in order to continue on your quest.

--------------------------------------------

TO GET THROUGH THE HOUSE:

There are THREE MAJOR ROOMS to the House of Horrors. In order to successfully pass through the House and receive your exam credit, you must navigate through all three rooms until you reach the exit, located after the very last room:

  • Cutthroat Kitchen

To get through the Cutthroat Kitchen, you need 10 steps. Roll 1d4 and add up the amount of steps you take (i.e. you roll a 3, that's 3 steps forward). You must get at least 10 steps. If you go over ten, that's fine, as long as it's at least 10.

Each number of steps rolled has it's own consequence:
1 - You open a door in the kitchen looking for the exit and promptly find yourself dunked by a bucket of icy water. Who left that there?
2 - You trip and fall into a vat of what looks like melted chocolate.
3 - You step in a pile of what looks like sticky glue on the floor and therefore get it stuck on the bottom of your foot/shoe for the rest of your trek through the House.
4 - For some reason, there is an entire bin of tiny bones that you somehow manage to knock over, which, of course, makes a terribly loud sound.

  • Lurking Library

In order to get through the Library, you'll have to find the right combination of books in order to find the combination. Roll 3d6, and follow the guidelines below:

      - 1,1 OR 2,2 as two of the numbers - Looks like you've found some sort of...oops better put that back quickly before a certain cranky Librarian sees you looking at por - (try again)
      - 3,3 OR 4,4 OR 5,5 OR 6,6 as two of the numbers - You pull out a book, and then another, and to your relief you see that the door beyond swings open for you to slip through! (success)
      - 1,2,3 (doesn't have to be in order) - Somehow you get entangled in what looks like a long rope made of paper and spend several moments trying to break your way free, when you notice that in the process you've actually fallen out the door into the next room. How convenient! (success)
      - 6,6,6 Is that a giant spi - quick run for it - (start back in the first room)
      - 1,1,1 You try climbing a bookshelf, rather than pull books trying to find the secret switch, and wind up tumbling over the side rather ungracefully. But hey, look, the...nope, just a shadow (try again)

  • Bloodcurdling Bedroom

The Bloodcurdling Bedroom requires only one thing - picking the lock successfully to get through the door on the other side. Roll 1d100. You must get above a 65 to have successfully picked the lock. If you roll below, then your attempts were unsuccessful and you have to keep on truckin'.

Upon their exit from the house, a certain mischievous Trick or Treater can be found lounging in a tree on the other side, looking as happy as a pig in mud. He smiles down at you, his grin terribly self-satisfied, and tosses you a rolled up piece of parchment. Opening it, you see a certificate of Exam Completion.

"Congratulations," he says brightly, and flashes you a wink. "You're now a Knob."

Carlos got a piece of paper attached to his door. Oh how exciting! It was written in poetry!

He read it aloud to himself and then squealed in excitement. He didn't know what it meant but it was clearly very special.

Good bad? Those were not things Carlos ever thought about, but singing was nice. It seemed to call him to a certain house. Carlos was excited. Yes, time to find the house. He was clearly invited.

Carlos took a trip outside wearing a hat to commemorate this odd occasion. would there be tea? Carlos hoped there would be tea. Even just the odd cracker would be fine.

When he got there the first thing he noticed was the smell. It was really strong. his nose scrunched up at the scent of smoke.

"Better days this place has seen." he commented to himself. But a sign clearly said this was the place. He paused in debate. should he go inside?

After that electrifying course, all Maddie wanted was a little break. Just a little one!
But of course, that wouldn't happen. She came back to her dorm only to see a letter taped on her door, and while she wanted to ignore it, something told her she should check it out.
She groaned out loud at the mention of a "test". She didn't study for no dang test! Nor did she want to take a test at this moment. But... what if it was important? What if they'd kick her out for not taking part in the test? While she had no real goal at being here, Maddie did rather like hanging around the school, and had no intention of being kicked out.

And so she complied, arriving at the weird-looking house near the forest. The heck was this? A shabby haunted house? If they thought they were going to scare her with this, they were sorely mistaken.
Her disappointment grew when she realized she wasn't alone, frowning at the familiar blue and black in front of her.
"Ugh, you again?"
She hoped he wouldn't try chewing her again. The NERVE.

"Uwah... that smells horrible!," Kari gasped, pulling up a fold of her scarf over her nose and mouth when she came close to see a roof in the distance. The reaper had come back to her dorm to find a slip of paper attached to her door requesting her presence for a test. Despite how nervous the idea of a test made her, it would be rude not to at least show up. She could always decide later whether she wanted to stay... right? The smell was giving her doubts, even if it was rude to ignore the message.

Coming up the hill, she saw... a tiny, run-down house? It looked as though it hadn't seen a bit of upkeep inn years. Was this the right place? Had someone just played a prank on her? Her doubt was successfully quelled once she found a small box containing a note. She paled at the last line. maybe this was a bad idea...

Before she could turn back, a noise caught her attention. It was coming from the front of the house. A boil and ghoul appeared to be talking. The ghoul, which she recognized as the quirky bear monster from the lecture-turned-scaresitting, didn't seem to be in a good mood. In fact, she looked downright irate.

"Urm... hello? Is... is this the place... for the test?" Kari hoped she hadn't walked in on anything particularly nasty. The strange village she'd just gotten away from had given the ghoul her fill of nasty to last for a good while.

Maddie received a hiss of discontentment. Carlos was usually a bit more polite to creeple, but he remembered the last time he saw her. And how she had Zeroed in on his treasure he now wore. The lightning opal bracelet got tucked deep into a pocket to save it from the stuffed bear.

"Meanie the teddy bear is here!" Carlos said very loudly. "She is quiet mad! Incredibly made, quintessentially mad."

Carlos floated/ran over to the nearest creeper and informed her of just what exactly his opinion was of Maddie was. Which to a certain extent was a compliment coming from the Cheshire cat. But Carlos being Carlos thought she was mad enough that other people needed to be warned.

"Time to go explore the house!" He knew that he probably had triggered Maddie's temper with his out burst. Or perhaps he didn't and merely was not getting distracted from his original task. Either way now that his warning of impending madness was done he floated through the door, bobbing in the air a bit and then landed.

What was that? Carlos picked up his foot. and shook it. What waaaas that? he sniffed at it and then tried to lick it off. It tasted like glue. Ewe glue.

"It's stuck on me!" he said loudly and shook his foot again and the proceeded to walk like a cat in booties.

Hearing another voice, Maddie turned to see a somewhat familiar-looking ghoul.
"I remember you..."
She wasn't sure where though. She didn't make a very good habit of remembering where exactly she had met everyone.

Aside from being grumpy at Carlos, Kari's remark had finally alerted Maddie to the smell. It was strange how she hadn't noticed it at first, but it was a smell she liked. Smoke, wood, despair. It gave off some eerie feeling not all too different from Miasma Village.

"Heh, who knows. Maybe it's all a trap, upupu~"
Not that she really cared. Spooky stuff? Bring it on!
And while she didn't like Carlos, she couldn't help but grin at his introduction.
"Quite mad indeed~"

Well, time was a-wasting just standing here.
She stalked after Carlos, undaunted by the fact that the door slammed shut behind her. She had no intention of running anyways.
However, she couldn't help but laugh when Carlos landed himself in some glue.
"Ha! Serves you right! You should have just-"

squelch
Maddie looked down to see she had stepped in it too. Ugh.

Kari blinked owlishly as the boil floated over to her, whining the whole way. Apparently he wasn't fond of her at all. "... There there," she replied, patting the boil's shoulder. Apparently this worked, considering he immediately floated away and into the house with claims of entering, she almost followed until the one bear ghoul's gave her reason to pause.

"Hmm... true. The note only said to come here for a test. We don't know what kind of test, so it could very well be a trap," the reaper pondered, her brow creasing in worry while walking alongside the monster. Without warning, a thundering boom preceded the door slamming shut behind the three. A quick pull and push on the door yielded no results. "Though it doesn't look like leaving is an option anymore," Kari groaned, feeling like she'd jinxed herself. Hearing the Carlos' cries, she ran for what looked to be the kitchen.

"Hey, are you alriaaAAAHHHHHHHHHH!"

A bucket of ice water had cascaded onto Kari from overhead upon stepping foot in the kitchen, prompting a loud shriek. She shuddered as the liquid soaked through her clothes, right down to the bone. "Cold! And! Wet!," she bellowed, biting off each word. Of all the things in the world, as a fire-aligned mage, she hated cold and wet the most. Pulling out her staff, she tried to generate a bit of heat in hopes of drying off. While it didn't work as much as she would have hoped, it at least took the edge off the freezing sensation so she wasn't shaking and shuddering so much.

Carlos paid little attention to the bear. he was busy trying to remove the sticky gunk from his paw. he did however hear the shriek. And turned his head to see a wet mage. This distraction drove Carlos head first into a vat of what looked like chocolate.

A lick later confirmed that it was indeed chocolate. "Mmmm hey this is good!" Carlos drifted further into the vat, hit tail and hind paws sticking out as he licked at the chocolate.

Cats really shouldn't have chocolate, but Carlos was a spirit, and a tea drinking cat. he could get away with a little bit of chocolate now and then. but not too much. Clearly this was too much but Carlos didn't seem to care. He was lost to the taste of chocolately goodness.

Maddie was busy trying to scrape the gunk on her shoes against the floor when she heard the ghoul scream, followed by the sound of clattering, and turned to see happened. Had she fallen through a trap door, or gotten squished by something?

Nope. Instead, it was something rather amusing.
Maddie couldn't help laughing when she saw Kari had dunked a bucket of ice water on herself. It seemed this spooky house still had some laughs.
And to prove it, the cat suddenly dunked himself in chocolate. What was even...
That silly cat. Chocolate was nice and all, but she had better things to do than drown in chocolate or take an ice cold bath.
Maddie was prepared to leave the two behind until she stepped on one of the ice cubes from Kari's bucket, and fell into the same vat as Carlos.

"Ablefoohe-"
Maddie spluttered against the chocolate, getting some in her mouth.
... damn, this was kinda good.

Wringing the excess water from her hair, Kari paused at the sound of laughter. She huffed at the cackling ghoul. True, in retrospect it probably was amusing to see a fire mage get soaked. It was so jacking cold, though! Kari didn't find it funny in the least! Well, at least the cheshire cat seemed to be having fun in his vat of chocolate...

"You know, laughing at someone else's expense is going to come back to bite you some day," the reaper ghoul chided as she stomped through the kitchen, her staff continuing to glow with a warm light. It was a warning that became fulfilled almost immediately. A piece of ice from the bucket got caught under the Maddie's foot, throwing her into the vat of chocolate alongside Carlos.

"Well, I didn't expect karma to come back around so soon," Kari gaped. As she turned back around to move on, she felt something against her foot just before a loud clattering noise echoed throughout the room. It was loud enough to force her hands to her ears, temporarily breaking her concentration on her staff's heat and light. Looking down, she noticed a pile of bones. Was that what made the noise? And better yet...

"... Do I want to know what those belong to?"

Carlos came up with a face full of chocolate. Along with his ears and shoulders. The cat looked almost absolutely covered in the stuff. "Delicious!" he laughed.

He raised a paw at Maddie and Kira. "Plenty to share!" he squeaked and then bounced out of the bucket, taking a step when he was suddenly sploshed with icy cold water. Carlos just looked up and used the water to take a short shower, the chocolate dripping down over the rest of him. "Bath time!" he sang and grinned at them and then shaking chocolate water everywhere and his fur puffing up as he air dried.

Carlos was not at all bothered by the cold.

It probably WAS wrong of her to laugh at Kari, but Maddie would never admit that. She was too busy trying to not drown in chocolate. Viscous chocolate and heavy sweaters were not a good match.
There was another clattering sound, and while Maddie couldn't see what Kari had knocked over, she had a feeling it was something that made her uncomfortable. What a clumsy ghoul, knocking things over. She hoped she had drenched herself with another bucket of ice.

"Yes."
She hoped she got soaked again.

Maddie grumbled when Carlos was able to pull himself out again, and she paddled herself over to the edge of the vat, using the chocolate's stickiness to help pull herself out of the vat.
Ugh, she just wanted to leave these two losers here. Where was the exit?

Maddie pushed on the first door she saw, and immediately got drenched.
Karma indeed.

Kari cringed as another icy bath claimed both Carlos and Maddie. The cat didn't seem to be bothered by it and took it in stride. It made Kari wonder how Maddie managed to garner such a bad opinion from him. The bear looked less amused, however. Jogging over to her, the reaper lit her staff up once more to generate some heat to dry the other ghoul's clothes. It would just be cruel to leave her soaking wet when something could be done about it.

That done, Kari continued of through the kitchen. Rounding the kitchen's island counter top, a small bin caught her eye moments before her foot made contact, sending another clamorous pile of bones to the floor.

"Seriously, who put these things here?," Kari yelled out over the noise, not realizing how loud she was being due to the hands covering her ears.

Carlos got to watch Maddie take the same treatment as himself. he let out another high pitch squeal of laughter. "Bath time for us all." He grinned at Maddie and then tripped back into the vat, falling backwards. This only induced more laughter as her turned and ate more chocolate.

It was about then that he heard the very loud sound that Kira made when the bones feel over. he peeked out of the vat, ears laid down flat. "Looooud." he complained. "A frickity frat, the bones fall out. A skeleton reaches but finally ceases as his bones crumble away."

Perhaps it was the fact that Carlos had tried to EAT her.
... not that he would have been able to do so, but she did not appreciate being chewed on and the like. Maddie was no chew toy!
It was surprising the ghoul was still willing to help, despite the way Maddie had treated her, and it made her wonder if maybe she should treat Kari just a little bit better.
"Thanks."
That simple word of gratitude was probably the only thanks she'd get until she knocked over a pile of bones, and from the ghoul's reaction, Maddie had reasoned the thing she had knocked over earlier was the same.

"Upupu, perhaps it's a sign~"
She frowned at Carlos, not appreciating the fact that she seemed to be following in his footsteps.
"No, no bath time. It's your fault I got dirty."
It was always Carlos' fault.

It was also Carlos' fault that she somehow ended up falling into the chocolate vat again.
