Gavin Selwyn NEWTs
✘ = opted out
✔ = taken test
✘ 1. Charms - O
______ With a natural inclination, years of hard work, and practice, Gavin was more than ready to tackle his NEWT. He performed above and beyond than expected in his spell casting.
✘ 2. Defense Against the Dark Arts - E
______ Perhaps not as naturally talented in this course as Charms, he still had plenty of blood, sweat, and tears from all the practice he's endured. His pronunciation was impeccable and while he performed each step well, it wasn't with the same over-the-top spell casting like he had achieved so easily in Charms.
✘ 3. Herbology - E
______ He studied long and hard, but not only that, was gifted with the ability to practice at home in his family's garden. It made it easier for him to recognize plants, list their properties and uses, but he fumbled on one or two plants that could have been found in the textbook, but not the castle greenhouse or his family gardens.
✘ 4. History of Magic - E
______ While all of the information was in his head, he often mixed up names and dates of political events and wars. He had to study extra hard for this test. And luckily, was able to use the process of elimination to find the right answer in most questions, but not all.
✘ 5. Potions - O
______ Gavin must have written hundreds of lines copying the ingredient list to all of the most common potions, over and over and over again, until the image of all those pages were burned inside his eyelids.
✘ 6. Transfiguration - A
______ His worst subject, by far, it was lucky he managed to scrap by with an Acceptable. His pronunciation and wand movements were his only saving grace, he lacked the willpower and strength of mind to master each demonstration. But he had enough to get by on the bare minimum.
✘ 7. Ghost and Ghoul Studies - A
______ While he enjoyed the class, he never took it very seriously. It was a break for him, something fun to take his mind off the rest of his studies. Because of that, he rarely studied the material outside of class time.
✘ 8. Muggle Studies - O
______ Easy to study for, since it was mostly all out of book, he spent plenty of hours at the library reading textbooks about muggles. He interviewed several muggleborns, discovering just how outdated some of the textbook material had been.
✘ 9. Wandless Magic Practice - A
______ Gavin practiced, hard and often. Especially so when he came of age, and no longer had the restriction of only being able to practice on school grounds. He took advantage of winter holidays to drill at the dueling range every day. But it simply wasn't enough. He lacked the hard discipline needed for a wandless duel. He was competent, but a far cry from well done.
✘ 10. Wizard Law - O
______ Gavin drilled for this exam, night and day. He studied up old law books and reread prolific court cases that shaped the legal system of the Wizarding World. It wasn't easy, and he had stress sweat stains afterwards, but used every ounce of knowledge read in order to pass.
