Territory
The Matai are situated along the coast, amid a cluster of caves, cliffs, and jungle. One cave, set apart from the rest, is reserved for inanimate treasures - That is, things animals can wear, versus living things that are kept as a treasure.
Surprising for most seaside prides, there is no river running through the lands. Drinking water is obtained from a series of pools up by the cliffs, where the tide doesn't reach, fed by rain water. Most often, though, the members of the pride get their liquids from fermented juices.
The southern reaches of the pride's territory is where most of the hunting is done - The trees thin out and grasses grow more plentiful, the consistent rainfall creating enough vegetation to feed a stable herd of prey, mostly made of residential antelopes and zebras.
History
Once upon a time, a lion found the beach and had an idea, about becoming a captain and leading his own crew of pirates - Pillaging and plundering was okay on its own, but it was dangerous to go alone, so why not take a whole crew? Many liked the idea and followed his lead, and the original Maestros del Mar was formed.
Of course, time does things to everybody, and a time came when the pride fell apart. Or had a plague driven it apart? It was hard to say, all that was known was that the Commodore vanished one day, and with him the pride's stability. Many vanished, many went missing, others simply left. But a few hung around, waiting, watching, hoping.
One of those lions was a young Crewman who went by the name Twelve Bells. While he saw many leave, he refused, determined to not abandon the only life he'd ever known. But even he had to admit defeat, eventually.
He set out, at first with the idea to live up to the old pirate ideals while finding a new home, but he ran into the problem of no pride clicking for him - And as a matter of pride, the Myrsky Syntynyt were completely out of the question, he'd have sooner died.
It was while he was out in the roguelands that he met a wild dog. Well, really, he met two wild dogs, but the blind one he met first, just after catching a bird. They had started to talk, when the blind dog's companion stole Bells' bird. At first he was angry, but then he realized how hungry the dogs both looked.
And much like that first lion, so long ago, he got an idea.
Taking the two dogs with him, he began to scour the savannas and jungles for assorted animals that wished to help repopulate the former Maestros lands, be they lions, hyenas, wild dogs, leopards, cheetahs, what have you.
Once home, they worked together and recreated the pride, with changes to what it had once been in hopes of making it better.

Gods
Like any pride, the pirates do have gods they worship! With a multitude of backgrounds, it's also hard to not believe, though it's still up to each individual how MUCH they want to believe. That said, these are the gods everybody worships!
Icarus - God of Indulgence Aharu'kai - Goddess of Thieves Yemaya - Goddess of Oceans Shinda - Goddess of Conquest Kabi'tan - Goddess of Treasure (Though they wouldn't know her name, or that she's a goddess, yet)
The Pirate Code
Even pirates have a code of conduct!
1. Do NOT steal from your crew - The others will vote on how to punish you, and you will be summarily punished for your deed 2. Every Crew member has a vote in all matters that concern the Crew - Crew-ranked individuals' votes are worth 1 vote each, Captain's is worth 3, and Quartermaster 4 3. During battle, the Captain's word is law, and any who disobey shall be punished for mutiny 4. Those who abandon the Crew in times of battle are subject to Death as punishment 5. From among the bounty, the Crew must vote on what will be given to the Pirate Lord as Tribute
Important Words and Terms
Crews: A crew is formed when a group of animals agree to form a new crew. They can be newly joined animals, recently-grown adults, or the excess members of another crew. They vote on who among them will be the Captain, and who will be the Quartermaster, and go before the Pirate Lords to mint their new crew and be assigned to a Pirate Lord. Remember: One person cannot own both the Captain and the Quartermaster of a crew, to keep things fair!
Treasure: Treasure can be anything, including a treasured lover, though most often it's a piece of jewelry or a pelt that's particularly coveted. When a crew gains treasure while out and about, the bounty is split evenly among the entire crew, with everybody agreeing on something to give to their Pirate Lord as tribute.
Tribute: Treasure that is given to the Pirate Lords by the assorted Crews. The Pirate King has the authority to, at any time, partake in claiming something from amid the Tribute if it so tickles their fancy.
Pirate name: A pirate name is basically a nickname - Often gained from being known for something, for doing something, or sometimes just because an individual likes to be known as something(Such as Gan Bo going by Twelve Bells). They are not, however, required, and are completely optional - So if your lion doesn't want a pirate name, they don't have to have one! Unlike the pride of old, anybody may have one, regardless of age or rank. Two SoA may share the same pirate name! They'll just be further distinguished, like Rooster the Hyena and Rooster the Leopard, or Rooster the Darker and Rooster the Lighter.
Matelot: Essentially, an individual's mate. And they can be anybody and anything. Pirates don't much care, so long as you're still doing your job. Often, matelots will share everything, even lovers, and when one dies, the other is compensated. So if a pair are part of the same Crew, the surviving part of the pair is entitled to their partner's share of any bounty. Division of the bounty share gets more complicated the more matelots one has, but each matelot is entitled to all or part of their mate's share of the bounty.
Important places
The Vault: This is where all the tribute is kept. Well, all the tribute that's not alive. Only the Pirate Lords and King may enter the Vault. Like the dens, it's situated up in the cliffs beyond the reach of the tide.
The Beach: This is the place most animals go at the end of the day, where they all relax and share stories. There is a spot dug into the sand where wood is piled to create a fire(Usually achieved by striking rocks together to make a spark), and it's not unusual to see some pride members passed out in the sand, either from being drunk or just because they thought it was a great spot to sleep.
The Dens: The dens are situated amid the cliffs, where the tide can't reach them. Most are communal to the crews, where they make berth, as it were, while others are more private.
Other Important Things of Note
Names: There is no naming convention in the pride!
Coat colors: There is no coloration theme or requirement!
Flings and Breeding: Breeding is always open, and flings are perfectly okay! No breeding pair is frowned upon(Outside shop rules), provided both parties consent! That's the only requirement for breeding!
Joining: Anybody may join! There's no longer a rule about impressing the Pirate King with something to join, you just have to swear fealty to your respective Pirate Lord and your Pirate King, if there's currently a King, and obey your Captain when times come(If you're on a crew). Of course, there's another, less willing way to join and that's being forced into the life, IE the Captain and/or Quartermaster saw something in you that they wanted on their crew and give you the choice of death or joining. Smart animals join....
Cubnapping: Not exactly an uncommon method of gaining new cubs in the pride, the particularly bold willingly resort to outright stealing cubs away to become pirates. But remember, all OOC parties involved, from cub owner to parent and pride owners, must consent to the plot! Drama is fun, until it spills into the OOC area!
Leaving: Leaving is a bit of a tricky one - If one retires from pirating and they do so to another pride, their wishes are respected and they are remembered for their deeds and celebrated, as they've reached an age they could retire at. If they simply leave while their crew is out and about near a pride and never return with the crew, they are considered deserters and, should they show their faces around the pride's lands again, will be summarily punished.

Ranks
Please note that, with the exception of familiars, because they can't actually get a rank on their cert, anybody may attain any rank within the pride! Be they lion, leopard, wild dog, male, female, or other! Familiars are considered Crew or Hunter/Huntress, unless they are Seers, then they may be referred to as Fortune Tellers.
Pirate King: The leader of the pride, the term King is sometimes a misnomer - The King could be literally anybody, regardless of how they identify. They have no actual heir, though, unlike other prides - The King is voted for by the Pirate Lords... And since everybody wants to be King, somebody only needs at least two votes in their favor since it's figured the Lords will use their vote for themself. As one can imagine, there isn't always a Pirate King.
Pirate Lord: Seven in total, the Pirate Lords are older Captains who have mostly retired but still wish to command others. Each Pirate Lord presides over at least three Captains, and will name an heir from amid the Captains they preside over. Like the Pirate King, the title is a bit of a misnomer in that anybody can become a Pirate Lord.
Captain: The ones in charge of crews. They have one crew to their name, and are in charge of running it properly, and are expected to do their duty to bring home periodic loot. This is only for when they are on their 'missions.' Once the missions are complete and they return to their homeland, the Captain is just one of the crew. The rank of Captain is often a voted rank, and also subject to change - If the Crew is unhappy with how the Captain is leading the group, they may vote to have them deposed of and place somebody new in the Captain's position.
Quartermaster: The Captain's right paw, the Quartermaster will act as Captain in the event the actual Captain of the crew is busy with something else. Like the Captain, the Quartermaster is a voted-on rank. It's not unheard of for the Quartermaster to become the new Captain, or for the Quartermaster to be deposed at the same time as the Captain and replaced by somebody else as well. When the crew votes on things, otherwise, the Quartermaster has the power to veto the Captain's vote.
Surgeon: In short, the healers of the pride. At least one goes with every crew on excursions, to make sure everybody makes it back alive.
Crew: This is the average rank, and the rank that is the most common among the pride. They do the dirty work, as in the plundering, stealing, killing, what have you, and they do it with pride.
Fortune Teller: Any seer who wishes to take the rank - Often these are the cubs of gods, since they're most easily verified as seers, but if a mortal animal can prove they're a seer in some manner(Like... Knowing a coconut is going to fall on somebody's head, as an example, before it does, or telling about something[With approval!] from somebody else's past that only those involved would know), they may take the rank
Hunters/Huntresses: A rank for those who wish to be in the pride, but don't necessarily want to go outside the lands. If they were human, these would be the farmers and the merchants of the port, the ones who keep the town going, so they have their own form of respect owed to them. That said, it's not unheard of for somebody to want to be a hunter or huntress but still want to go out with a crew.
Sea Dog: The members of the pride who have retired for one of many reasons, be it old age(And then they are considered VERY lucky), injury, or they've managed to strike it rich enough to just not go out anymore. Most often, though, it's from crippling injury.
Apprentice: All adolescents in the pride, whether they were born in or not, hold this rank
Cub/Pup: All cubs and pups born into the pride are this rank, depending on if they are a canine, feline, or hyena.
Lost Cub/Pup: This is the rank held by cubs or pups(Depending on what they are) who have been stolen into the life of the pirates, or found orphaned either at the border or in the roguelands. They do age out of it.
