[Forge Solo] Mushroom Soup (Malthir)

Solo for Malthir

The Forgemaster's favourite food is mushroom soup. However, he doesn't often have time to go out and collect the mushrooms to make it. Find him enough mushrooms to make the stew and he'll not only share a meal with you but he'll grant you a shiny gold piece (or two).

Goal: Collect 20 mushrooms.
Instructions: Roll 1d6 and match your rolls to the outcomes below!
1. This mushroom is a little slimy and you're not entirely sure if that's a good thing or not. The last thing you want to do is give the Forgemaster food poisoning so you test it yourself. That's the only thing you remember and you wake up sometime later in a haze. -3 mushrooms
2. In the remnants of a decaying log, you find the mother load. The largest mushrooms you've ever seen! And even more lucky, you remember these mushrooms and know they're good to eat! (+5 mushrooms)
3. You seem to have stumbled into a large thicket of brambles. It takes you some time to pull all the thorns out of your sides and it seems as though they tore a hole in your sack and you lost some mushrooms. (-2 mushrooms)
4. Some of the woodland creatures got curious at the soquili traipsing through their home. You seem to be making an awful lot of noise and they want you gone asap! They brought you some mushrooms to help speed the process along. (+3 mushrooms)
5. Nothing out of the ordinary with this find, you just happened to sniff them out. (+1 mushroom)
6. Seems like another group of woodland creatures doesn't like you stealing their mushrooms. They perform an elaborate trick of death defying skill while another pilfers your sack! (-1 mushroom)

After the disaster with the salve, Malthir thought that perhaps he'd make it up to the Forgemaster by foraging for some mushrooms for him. He was better with mushrooms that he had been with herbs, and so he hoped that this was going to go a bit more smoothly.

He found a rotten log that was loaded with them, and picked out the biggest and the best of them. They were familiar to him, and in perfect condition. It was a good start to his mission.

The young knight continued his search, his bag held carefully on his back. It was tempting to leave it in just one place, but he wasn't sure just how far he'd have to look to find all the mushrooms he needed. He wanted to take back a good amount, maybe enough that the forgemaster could make a large batch of soup, or even be able to dry the mushrooms for later use.

He found another mushroom at the bottom of a tree, and after sniffing it, determined it to be perfectly fine. He picked it carefully, and added it to the bag with the rest.

Behind the next tree, he stumbled into a large thicket of brambles. They caught him and the sack, and once he was able to get himself free, spent some time pulling the thorns out.

It was only a little painful, just minor flickers of irritation, but they were no fun. He needed to be more careful, and pay better attention.

It seemed that his struggles in the brambles disturb some of the local creatures, and he could see squirrels and deer watching him warily. He seemed to be making a bit too much noise, and one of the squirrels ran up to him.

It squeaked at him, and then offered him a handful of mushrooms.

"Thanks," Malthir said politely. "I'll try to hurry with my task so I don't disturb you for too much longer."

The squirrel squeaked back at him, and then disappeared into the bushes. That had been nice of them, and he made a mental note to bring some nuts and berries to repay them for their help.

He found another log, and when he turned it over, found another batch of mushrooms. These looked just like the first ones he had found, and he picked a few.

This wasn't going so bad. It was kind of nice out here, actually. He didn't usually spend a lot of time in forests, but they had a charm of their own. It was cool and shady, and had such a variety in plant life.

Part of him wondered if there were any useful herbs here, but after that whole mess, Malthir had decided that if he ever needed some sort of salve, he was going to barter for it.

He could smell some more mushrooms, but as he attempted to find them, found more brambles instead. They were still just irritating, not dangerous, but they took valuable time away from his mushroom hunting.

Good thing this was the only thing he had planned to do for the evening.

He carefully pulled all the thorns out of his sides and legs, and then set back out to look for more.

He found the mushroom that he had smelled, grabbing it right away. It was a nice color and a nice shape, nothing out of the ordinary. Just your average ordinary mushroom.

As he came to a small stream, Malthir paused, taking a moment for a break. He checked his bag, and finding several small holes, patched it up the best he could. He didn't need to lose any more mushrooms.

He took a good drink from the clean clear water, and then decided that it was time to get back to work.

The squirrel from before returned, the red stripe on it's back distinct. It offered him more mushrooms, and Malthir couldn't help but smile. This little squirrel was being so nice.

He was definitely going to have to do something nice back.

He startled a group of birds from one of the trees, and they reacted by swarming around him. It was almost as if he had set off some sort of signal, and he could only wait and watch as the birds flew circles around him.

They did loops and twirls, and if Malthir didn't know better, he almost thought as if they were putting on a sort of show for him.

He didn't notice the little robin sneaking into his bag and then flying off with one of his previous mushrooms.

Under a pile of leaves, Malthir found another mushroom. This one didn't look or smell quite as good as the others, and was a little slimy. He wasn't sure if that was a good thing, or if meant that the mushroom was bad.

He didn't want to give the Forgemaster bad mushooms, and so he decided to try it before putting it in his bag. It tasted alright, maybe a bit off, but not too bad.

He found himself staring at a pile of fallen leaves, the colors catching his eye. He stayed like that for a while, until he finally woke up, a bit bewildered. Maybe it wasn't a good mushroom after all.

And they were back again.

He paused in his foraging to look at the little squirrel, and then picked a handful of berries from the bushes nearest to him. He offered them to the squirrel in exchange for the mushrooms, and from the sound the little creature was making, it was very pleased by the exchange.
