With so many eager young faces gathered around, Dhremorath could not help but give a croon, the usually quiet and stern bronze moved by their excitement. This was a long anticipated moment for Zenobiath's clutch, and Z'von intended it to be a success. Although they had received much training at the hands of their Candidatemaster and Weyrlingmaster, Z'von still needed to make sure some of the stubborn among his students understood that there would absolutely be no paired flying today. The weyrlings just weren't ready yet.

"All right, listen up. Today's a big day for you. Today each and every one of you will be finding out whether or not you put enough work into exercising your dragonets. Because we're going to see how well they do on their first ever flight. There are some ground rules, however. You will not, and I repeat, will not, be joining them in this. What they need from you is support and encouragement. You've been working hard to deepen your bond, and this is where it's going to come in handy. It is your job to make sure that your dragon remains calm and nobody goes between today."

Obviously, that would lead to tragedies that could easily be avoided. "Although we will practice landing, one thing to keep in mind is that crashing is normal for a young dragon. They don't yet have the sort of grace that they'll grow into later. So let's help them stick the best landings that they can." As it was, he'd chosen the territory carefully for this first flight. There were no large trees that might catch their wings, though a few saplings might not survive the encounter if they did fly into them. Hopefully they'd manage a bit better than some of the previous clutches had.

You will be flying alone today, each of you. I expect that you will do your best to remain calm, and remember your lessons. For indeed, they had practiced and drilled in this from the ground. Each dragonet by rights should be prepared for it... but they would see. Do not take off all at once. It will be easier to maintain control if you are orderly. Do not go far. If he had to fish a weyrling out a tree or a pond, so he would. He preferred that they not land there to begin with, but only time would tell.

Roll a d20 to see how well your dragonet does! You may roll up to three times total. Each roll will be a separate flight attempt. Before rolling again, you must fill out a RP post, as this is supposed to be roleplayed. After your third roll, you can continue to roleplay as you wish, but note that no further flying attempts can be made.

1 - 5: You start off strong, but then a gust of wind throws you off your game. Roll a d4 to see whether you're able to correct your trajectory:

  1. You veer off of your intended path, angling for a small copse of trees. Try though you might, you can't maintain control and crash into the underbrush.
  2. You've been doing a lot of flaps to prepare for this, and you manage to overcome this temporary hurdle, but ouch, your muscles hurt.
  3. The wind blows you well off course, but you use your tail to turn around, heading back toward the group.
  4. Nothing seems to stop the wind, and you are now well on your way toward the lake. Splash!

6-10: It's difficult to get off of the ground to begin with. This requires a lot more muscle strength than you were prepared for, and by the time you're airborne, you are already pretty tired. Roll a d4 to see what happens next:

  1. You aren't able to stay aloft long before you find your tired wings don't want to budge. You crash and break a claw. Ouch!
  2. You may be tired, but your are mighty! Take that, sky! You muster up a hidden reserve to remain in the air, but now the trouble is how you land.
  3. Nope, this was a bad idea, and you skid gracelessly along the ground into a heap. Shards.
  4. You are a sky warrior, and though tired you are not defeated. At the last second you find a thermal and rise above it all. ... Way, way above it, and... halp!

11-15: Psh, this flying thing is smooth sailing! You don't know what all the fuss is about. Except, now that you're here it occurs to you that you don't know how to land. Roll a d4 to see how you do!

  1. Flying is easy peasy, but landing is not for the feint of heart. Thankfully, you're a pro already, and... shaffit, where did that sapling come from? That stung a bit, and totally messed up the cool vibe you had going.
  2. Remembering something the Weyrlingmaster said to your rider a few days before, you use your tail to help you turn, but it's not quite enough. You end up, yep, right in the lake. Drat.
  3. Who's laughing now? You've got this thing. Yeah, take that! And that! And... whoops, didn't stick the landing.
  4. Nobody said this was going to be easy, but somehow you didn't realize it would be this hard either. Try though you might, you can't quite pull of the smooth landing you've seen all the adults do. But at least you managed to land.

16-20: How many ways could this possibly go wrong? You've managed to throw yourself completely off course, and honestly, any solution right now seems like a good one. Roll a d4 to see what happens next:

  1. No matter how hard you try, you're flying further and further away from the class, and at this point you're actually closer to the Weyr than to where you started. You manage to land, but nowhere near anyone else.
  2. You know what? Maybe this isn't so bad. Due to the copious flaps you've done in the past you're able to stay in the air, and with a little maneuvering, you even make it look like you're here on purpose. Right up until the point where you land, because oof, that wasn't something you want everyone to remember.
  3. Is it your hatchday, because you are killing it. Possibly literally, when it comes to the plant life you just demolished on landing, but you know what? You stuck the landing.
  4. Don't look now, but there's an unaffiliated dragon right in your flight path. You weren't expecting them, and they are way too close for you to move aside. At the last second, they go between and you're left scrambling as you fly right toward a tree - shaff!

Flying had been the talk of many gatherings D'rok had been a part of in the past few weeks - siblings speculating on if they were ready or not, he and other candidates musing over the convenience of keeping their dragons clean once they were allowed to fly freely on their own. It had taken up a lot of time in the young man's brain.

So had it taken up a lot of time in Khazariath's, partially because the space was shared, but also because the young dragon had been so much a source of it.

The warning, while unneeded for Khazariath, did not fall upon deaf headknobs. Rather, Dhremorath's words of wisdom were held tightly. They came from experience that was meant to keep them all safe. He very much liked being safe when going into the unknown. No matter how prepared they all were, no matter how much flying was part of the bronze's very being, Khazariath would not lie about being nervous to finally touch the sky on his own wings. D'rok worked to make sure his lifemate didn't allow his cautious ways didn't paralyze him from trying.

It is okay to not be perfect right out the gate, Khazariath, D'rok soothed, running a hand along his dragon's side adoringly. The slightest lean of flesh back into his hand was outweighed by the mental grab Khazariath made for the calm he was maintaining. Of course. I..... he hesitated, picking over his words before continuing the thought, can do no better than my best. His nerves were clear to D'rok.

He wished he could have simply been more ready.

The young man continued to soothe his dragon silently as they waited for their turn - or rather, for Khazariath's turn. D'rok would only be there in mind and spirit. "Alright, Khazariath. You've got this," D'rok spoke firmly, no doubt. If Khazariath wasn't confident, D'rok would be enough for him. He would fill that shared space with confidence to help get him off the ground. Khazariath would keep his composure, never betraying his nerves as he finally made that first ascent into the sky.

An ascent that wasn't exactly an easy takeoff, even for a bronze of his size and build. But with D'rok's confidence in him, Khazariath could push his way through anything - though it was exhausting for what it was.

He'd really barely caught the air before he lost it again. But at least it wasn't a long way down, fumbling back down onto the ground before he was feet over head - and D'rok was already on his way over to make sure nothing more than his dragon's prize was hurt for the poor first go.

Othelloth stood confidently at La'hisen's side, listening to each and every word spoken. Of course, he had little doubt that he would succeed with flying--it was what he was made for. He'd been working hard, and he would turn heads! It was only natural. La'hisen had a hand resting on his blue's head, his attention focused only on Z'von and Dhremorath. Despite his stoic face, the young man was just as eager as his young dragon, hardly able to believe that Othelloth was already at the age that he was ready to fly.

I won't. Othelloth spoke to their teacher of sorts, his eyes whirling with his excitement. As tempting as it might be to ride the winds, he knew it would do little good if he got himself carried off and into trouble.

Striding away from his beloved rider, Othelloth began to beat his wings mightily, imagining himself springing from the ground and taking flight without any trouble. La'hisen was in the back of his mind, a wordless ball of endless support, confidence and encouragement.

Oh. Oh. Othelloth took to the air as easily as breathing, but perhaps his flapping was a little too strong. He was veering wildly, and, alarmed, was attempting to correct himself.

Yes... Yes! He had this! Things were working out just fine! The blue didn't bugle, but his triumph was an almost physical thing as it radiated from his very being. He was staying aloft, and balancing himself without any trouble!

Then came the landing.

Othelloth hit the ground much harder than he expected, tumbling snout over tail tips for several seconds until he skidded to a halt. How.... mortifying. Faranth, but he prayed no one was paying much attention, and snorted with ire as he felt his rider's amusement. How dare.

They had practiced. They had done the work, done the drills, and while this was very ... daunting, Cordeth felt like perhaps, maybe he could do this. He could fly. After all, it was what he was born for, right?

This is it, dear one.You are are goign to be just fine.T'ry sent waves of confidence and reassurance, knowing just how anxious His beloved blue was.

Take-off wasn't so bad, he made it into the air with no problem. Feeling the rush of the air beneath his wings, it was almost as easy as breathing. He could do this. As the teeny, tiny fear that he wasn't good enough, that he might somehow manage to mess things up, to fail, to make his look bad, melted away, he began to enjoy the feeling of flight. This.. this was amazing.

But then he remembered there was more to flying. He would have to come down, eventually. But... how was one supposed to land?

Argamath was beyond ready for this. He'd practiced plenty, certain to maintain his poise the entire time--now was the most critical time of all to keep himself in the proper form, and if he was going to keep his elegant figure in the skies, he knew he had to keep himself on his toes. Ka'ia had been with him every step of the way, of course, and with his rider's encouragement, the little Bronze had been able to step up to this flight lesson with full confidence.

Be careful, now. Ka'ia didn't mean to fret, but there was still a thrill of anxiety running through him as he watched his Bronze step up to the plate. You've got this, I know, but I worry.
Relax, Mine. Argamath's feelings through their bond felt like a warm blanket placed over his shoulders, and Ka'ia shifted in place to try and disperse some of the nervous energy that was so at odds with the comfort washing over him. I was born to fly, and I intend to do it well.
You will.
Try not to be to awestruck if the light hits me, hm? I know how you are. Argamath's gentle teasing drew a snort from his rider, and the dragonet briefly looked back over his shoulder to observe the reaction in full. Although--if the others are just as impressed, I'm sure you can make a good show of it as well.
Just go for it, you lump. I'll be dazzled either way.

Argamath took a deep breath, gently digging his claws into the earth beneath him as he steeled himself--he wasn't nervous, but the importance of getting this right was not lost on him, and he did not intend to fail so soon. Or at all, really, but overcoming this first hurdle would do a lot for that. He spread his wings, careful to get himself settled just so before he began to flap--it was just like all those practice rounds, as he told himself. Simply that and nothing more, save for the increased number of spectators.
Taking off was easy. Argamath could feel Ka'ia's pure joy from the first moment he was truly in the air, and his rider's presence only bolstered his confidence. He began to move forward, gaining altitude bit by bit--he was sure this looked positively effortless.

Well. Until the wind decided to intervene, of course.
His eyes whirling red with frustration, Argamath bared his teeth at the offending gust as he found himself buffered by it, pushed so far off course as to be shameful--just as soon as his temper began to rise, Ka'ia sent his own wave of comfort in an effort to calm his love's impending anger. The dragon in question, on the other hand, continued to grumble, but his growl died in his chest before it could advance. He'd have to thank him for that later--for now, his focus needed to stay on flying.
He twisted his body in the air, using his tail to try and steer himself back to where he needed to be--and fortunately enough, it worked. A surge of pride overtook the remnants of his rage, and Argamath collected himself for the rest of his flight back. He knew he could land well, but he had to keep hold of his poise for the best effect.

Oh! Oh, Fi'dalmine, look!

Fi'dal was looking with a slight grimace on his face. It was nice to see the other weyrlings were finally up in the air but each one was a little wobbling accident waiting to happen. He gave Arwainth a sidelong glance, observing how his little green dragon watched with wonder in her bright blue and green eyes, the colors swirling without a hint of worry or fear. He could feel how she longed to be up there with her siblings, soaring through the sky as dragons should. But she was still so small...

"Looks like it's your turn," he said as the little takeoff zone cleared. "Remember, be careful. This is your first time and-"

Yes, yes, careful, all right. Now watch me! Here I go! Arwainth got a bit of a galloping start as she headed for the clearing, her floral-marked wings beating hard with each step. Finally the little green lifted off and Fi'dal held his breath as he tilted his head up, watching her climb higher and higher.

Weeee! Fi'dalmine, this is so much fun! Oh, oh look, I'm turning! And indeed she was. Though flying even was a bit of a struggle for all the dragons, Arwainth seemed to be pretty confident in herself, confident enough to turn hard and pull up sharply as greens were wont to do. Fi'dal felt his heart skip a beat in time with Arwainth's, though his was skipping in anxiety while hers were skipping with delight.

Ha! That was amazing!

Yes, well, why don't you come back down and let someone else have a chance, hm? You might be able to go up again. Fi'dal was glad Arwainth seemed to be doing well, but he didn't want her to get too confident with her new abilities. Still, she seemed content to slowly turn back towards the landing area, descending at a rather alarming speed.

Arwainth, too fast! Slow down!

I'm fine, Fi'dal! Watch! Ready? Coming in for a- whoa!

As predicted by the former healer, Arwainth was coming in far too hot. She bounced on her first attempt to land, jarring her little body hard enough that she let out a little squeak in surprise. She forgot to continue holding out her wings and as they collapsed against her body she fell like a stone the short distance between her and the ground. Another bump, a skid, and a little cloud of dust welcomed Arwainth back to the ground and Fi'dal was at her side quickly.

"Are you all right?" he asked, his healer training taking over even though he'd never been taught how to work on a dragon. His own body felt a bit achy but there was no stabbing pain indicating a broken bone or ruptured organ anywhere. The little green body was trembling, but as Arwainth lifted her head from under her wing it was clear she was laughing, little wheezing honks leaving her.

Right as rain, Fi'dalmine! Oh, that was so much fun! I'll have to work on landings a bit more but being up there was so...so...right. Fi'dal's hammering heart began to settle as he got back to his feet, reaching down with a hand to rest it against Arwainth's large (for her body, anyway) head to guide her back to the waiting area. That had been terrifying but he had felt her joy and excitement right alongside his own nerves. She really did enjoy it up there which gave him hope for when she was large enough to carry him. Hopefully her confidence would spread.

At long last, it was time to take to the sky.

The young brown had been growing by leaps and bounds, and it was more and more evident by the day what a strapping fellow he was destined to grow into, which of course he was always happy to showcase. Flapping exercises, in addition to being necessary and useful, had been perfect for showing off - not that Maestoth really needed the extra push, as intent as he was that he was the very best of his clutch. So as he waited his turn, he stretched carefully and made himself ready, asking His to massage just so here and there, all so that he would be fully prepared for his debut.

When the time came, getting off the ground did prove to take a bit more...effort than he had assumed it would, but he took it in stride: it was of course due to no lack on his part, by his estimation. No! It was only because there was so much of him to get off the ground. But once he did, he was glorious, wide wings lifting him into the sky where he belonged...and also into a thermal, which pushed him higher still. He surged with pride, revelling in the feel of it, until he realized he wasn't quite certain how best to uh. Get down from so very high up.

I appear to have found a thermal, he admitted carefully to the Weyrlingmaster Assistant. What might be the best way to remedy this situation? There was no sense in panicking, and besides that, it would look terrible, and so he would remain calm and follow whatever instructions he was given to return to the ground. Hopefully with some amount of grace.

OK, so maybe this flying thing was a little bit more difficult than initially thought, but still...

Take it easy. Nice and slow, Beloved. You can do this. The soft, gentle voice of His offered him the confidence to try. To make his way back to where the weyrlings were waiting. Things looked to be going ok. The ground, and His were closer. Just a little more...

The sapling that brought him fully to the ground seemed to come from out of nowhere, but at least he was down now, and safe, with nothing more than slight bumps and bruises to show for the exercise. Sure, he might not have looked the coolest, but he succeeded. He'd survived. And things could only go up from here.

"Come on, Vardoth. You'll do great!" Ch'el thumped his blue's neck encouragingly, trying to get his blue dragon to stand. Vardoth oozed his usual cheerfulness and support, blue-green eyes watching as some of his clutchmates sprang right into action.

It wasn't that the blue dragon was lazy. He just needed a little extra encouragement sometimes, and was taking Dhremorath's advice not to start immediately to heart. He watched as his bronze, brown, and blue siblings began to take flight, crooning encouragement from where he laid. You're all looking marvelous from down here! He encouraged each of them, pride and affection in his words.

They were all gems.

But Ch'el knew that Vardoth also needed to at least attempt . He could feel his blue's interest--so what was he waiting for? "Come on now. Let's see you up there, eh? You'll be amazin'!" First Vardoth, and then, in another month or so, Vardoth and Che'll, together. And that was a day he couldn't wait for. He wanted so badly to be astride his own blue, to be up in the sky, to be... free. All his life he'd been nothing but a mine-kid--but now, he was a dragonrider! Or, at least, a weyrling. Regardless, he wore that title with pride, and wanted to show the world how far he'd come. He was a real someone now... and he was indebted to High Reaches forever. Whatever they asked of him, he'd give his all. They got him out of the Mines, and then he found Vardoth. He would never leave. This was home.

Sensing his riders pride and desire, the blue dragon finally gave a fond croon. Craning his neck, he nuzzled His, before pushing himself up to his feet. With a great stretch of his wings, the plump blue decided it was time to fly. Let's see how this goes? It does kind of look like fun.

Ch'el stifled a whoop and watched as his dragon shook out his wings, giving them a few test flaps.

Ch'el watched as Vardoth pushed himself high in the air and had to stifle a whoop. That's it! He encouraged, proud of the dragon who was now airborne. But the excitement was quick to change to alarm when it was very clear that Vardoth veered completely off course.

One minute the blue was going the right direction, the next had him picked up by a gust of wind and blown well off course. "Vardoth!"

Any sudden alarm and panic Ch'el might have felt was washed away by the blue dragon's complete and utter calm. Though things weren't going according to plan, the blue dragon wasn't going to get too upset. This was fine. He'd manage to get himself out of the mess one way or another.
