Danzik had known better than to leave any chore in the hands of just Papys. While he was an eager young man, he had a way of letting his eagerness get ahead of him and simply...fumbling his way through a task without someone else to pace him. She'd also had the mind to not just tell Rahimar about just that - she hadn't wanted to set him up to be frustrated with his choremate, rather than any malicious reason.

Papys, expectedly, had been eager to please when she'd called the two young men in.

"Last fall was a bit of a rough one, and the healers need some extra hands on making sure bandages are cleaned, wrapped, and ready to use. Too many wounded, not enough hands. Check in with the healers, Veena is usually good if you need to ask for someone. They'll show you what they expect. Any questions?" Danzik looked between the two.

"Nope! I'm good!" Papys said, a normal answer but...his head was a touch on the empty side, so Danzik looked instead to Rahimar to see if he had any. "If you don't, you can head over."

Rahimar had long since been accustomed to the routine of Candidacy. While he was not weyrbred, he had been a Candidate long enough to know how everything worked. Being assigned infirmary duty was commonplace enough--especially after a particularly rough Threadfall. Danzik's request to work with Papys to assist in whatever the Infirmary needed didn't bother him--nor did the prospect of working with a fellow Candidate.

"Consider it done." Whether it was bandage duty, running laundry, even cleaning bedpans -- whatever they needed, Rahimar wasn't going to flinch. He wasn't sure what else Danzik expected but had no intention of causing trouble. This wasn't his first time assisting in the Infirmary, and doubted it was Papys' first time, either. He had no intentions to slack.

At Danzik's acknowledgment, Rahimar stood and headed for the door. "You're not the queasy sort, right?" He asked once they'd left Danzik's office. They had a small walk to the Infirmary, and while Rahimar wasn't looking forward to seeing the newly injured, he wasn't afraid of what he might find. Growing up Holdless meant he'd seen his fair share of injuries--from tumbling and acrobatic accidents, burns, broken bones, stabbings, sickness, and more than a few deaths. While Threadscore was different, Rahimar wasn't concerned about getting the work done.

Papys, on the other hand--he didn't know him well, didn't know much about his story though he looked familiar enough. They'd been in lessons, but this was the first time they'd really had to work closely together.

You're not the queasy sort, right?

Something about the question made Papys run his fingers over his chest, where underneath his shirt were the scars from a clutch the previous Turn had marked him for the rest of his life - in more ways than one. He'd not paid the price of being left with only scars. But he'd not really allowed that weight to settle in even now. He played hot potato with it.

"I don't think so!" he answered brightly, despite the moment of hesitation, "I mean, my family worked some with animals so..." not that Papys had ever been allowed to do much more than be a pair of arms helping hold down a herdbeast while someone else did dirty work, or to maybe not hold the knife while his father butchered it. Really, they'd been comparatively easy tasks. "I'll be fine!"

In theory, he was certain he would be and he hopefully sounded confident enough about it to back it up. The walk to the infirmary wouldn't be nearly long enough for the thought to come back to him again with all the space it had to travel.

"What do you think they'll have us do? Do you think it looks real bad?"

If Rahimar noticed any hesitation, he gave no sign of it--or, more than likely, simply didn't care. He didn't know the other Candidate well despite his Turns at the Weyr. He was, for the most part, a bit too self-centered, and unless he found someone interesting, or memorable, he likely couldn't be bothered to remember a face. Papys looked familiar--and he could confirm having seen him in lessons, and other group assignments--but that was the extent of his knowledge.

"Ha, good." He gave a pleased smirk. He'd hate to have been paired up with someone liable to faint over a little blood or whatever-else might be found on the bandages. "If we're cleaning bandages, sounds like it'll be a bit of a messy thing. I've been tasked with this before during some of my chore rotations--ain't nothing to it really. Suspect we'll be soaked through by the end of it though." Of course, given this was post-Fall, he suspected there were going to be a lot more messier bandages than the last time he'd been tasked with helping. Already, from what he could see, the Infirmary looked to be busier than normal--and that was just from what he could see on the outside.

"What a mess," Rahimar grimaced a bit, already the scent of boiling numbweed hitting his nose. There were dragons with all sorts of injuries outside the immediate area--he could only imagine what they would find inside. Thankfully, assuming they were lucky enough to be sent to launder the bandages, they wouldn't have to be right in the middle of it. Even with a strong stomach, there were still some injuries that Rahimar didn't want to see.

"Hopefully more soaked than any of the bandages are," Papys said, hopeful but still all the well knowing that it was rather unlikely that with a fall as bad as the last one had been that there wasn't blood to go around. There was also likely pain, and Papys was rather grateful that they were getting to clean bandages the closer they got to the infirmary.

Agony had a way of being palpable.

He took a careful look around, trying to see if he recognized any of the dragons before stepping inside - and immediately doing his best to keep from being underfoot. It was at least one of the things Papys could do without fumbling his way through. "Hello!" he greeted to one of the more familiar faces - one of the masters - who paused in what looked like taking a breather to look over both of the young men.

Veena seemed to have a thousand thoughts going on behind her eyes, brushing them away. "You've come to help, then?" she asked, cutting through all the small talk - she knew Danzik had been asked, she knew they needed the help, and these two would not be the only candidates who would pass through that day. "Bandages are admittedly scattered," as if the healers weren't a bit up to their elbows in it, "so if you want to collect any that aren't in the cleaning baskets it would help - do you know how to launder or do I need to advise?"

She sounded tired, and perhaps a little hopeful she could have a moment to breathe instead.

The Infirmary was definitely busy, and any smile the Candidate wore had faded as soon as they stepped in. He wasn't so out-of-touch not to know there was a time and place--and after such a disastrous Threadfall, it was no wonder the place was hopping. Thankfully, Rahimar wasn't green when it came to chores, much less how to launder. Not only had he been assigned the chore enough times since his arrival at Western Weyr to know how to do it in his sleep, but cleaning their own clothes had been imperative while on the road. The fact that there were designated pools and tubs was a luxury Rahimar appreciated.

"I think we've got this handled. We'll get right to it, won't we?" He nudged Papys with his shoulder, like they were some sort of easy friends. Though he was more than happy to wait for Veena to dismiss them, she also had to have a million more important things to do than hand-hold some Candidates. "You start at that end, I'll start at the other, and we'll meet up at the tubs. Sound good?" He asked Papys. The sooner they had the bandages in hand, the sooner they could get to work cleaning them, and not be underfoot here.

See also, it's easier to get them to a place to talk by handwaving the gathering. LOL

Veena may not have seemed relieved to see Rahimar take charge, but she was grateful to be able to focus on her actual work. "Very well - I'll leave you to it."

While Papys wasn't a dunce when it came to laundering, if Rahimar hadn't simply doled out the order of things the young man would have easily allowed himself distraction and efforts to help in places he quite obviously was not capable of being helpful. "Sounds good!" he agreed readily, already heading off to the other end of the infirmary to start gathering up the unfortunately scattered bandages.

To his credit, when left unattended he only got distracted twice - the first time to offer help where it wasn't needed and the second to offer a few supportive words. So if his choremate was already at the tubs by the time Papys arrived with more bandages than felt right it wouldn't have been a surprise. The grim look on his face was a little different, though.

He dumped the bandages into the tub. "Definitely looks like it was more rough than I was expecting," Papys confessed.
