It was sufficient to say that nothing in his life was going right. He had been doing odd jobs here and there trying to keep himself occupied and his brain busy. If he didn’t then he would be thinking about how much he had royally screwed his life up with the choices he had made. He had already confided in his brother who told him not to worry, but how could he not? He had never been the one to want to settle down. Never had been the one to want to have children. He had never wanted to do anything else other then his jobs. He was turning into his father. He hated the idea of that even though he didn’t resent him. He never resented him, but he didn’t exactly look up to him either. Maybe that is where his problem was..He was trying so hard to not be his father he was slowly going down a similar road his father walked on.
Growling at his own thoughts in pure frustration, he dug his hoof into the muddy ground as he continued walking towards the place his brother liked to reside. It had just raided earlier in the morning, so the ground was still saturated from the beating it took. “Oh brother where are you~?” He called out for him in a sing-song voice as he walked through the open field feeling exhausted after finishing his last job. He just wanted to find his brother so that he could rant and continue his way. He stepped into the wooded area seeing the open grove right ahead and what looked like his brother passed out on the ground there. Maybe he wasn’t the worse child after all.
“Hey get up!” He shouted as he stuck a hoof right in his brother’s rib area. He didn’t seem to move which could only mean one thing. He had a wild night again. He didn’t really care what his brother did as long as he took care of himself. That is when it happened. Everything went dark. It was as if night took over when he knew damn well the sky was bright just a moment ago. He looked up at the sky seeing a ring. A ring of fire. He felt his eyes go wide and the hair stand up on his back.
Usually, he was calmer than this, but with everything happening in his life he was taking this moment as an omen. An omen of bad things to come. He had never been a superstitious one like the rest of his family. He had a more grounded head on him or at least he thought that before this happened. Luckily his brother was close by, but still not moving. So again, he nudged him harder this time seeing him stir finally.
Maybe this was the sign he needed. The sign to tell him to get on the right path. He didn’t know how long he stared up at it. Seconds felt like a lifetime, and he could feel his heart pounding within him. He never felt fear before. Not real fear like this. He could say he was afraid of certain things or afraid of becoming his father, but he had never felt so scared he could barely move. He then remembered a time when he was a young colt. When he was afraid of going into a dark cave his mother told him he needed to spend the night in so that he could overcome his fear of darkness. He made it through the night, but that fear he felt now was the same he felt then. He had forgotten all about that. That time of pure loneliness and fear of the unknown.
That is what this was. The unknown. He didn’t know what was going to happen. What did this mean?
“I….don’t want to die…please..” He mumbled as he looked down hoping his brother didn’t hear him.

He was having the best dreams. All about his last night. So wild, so untamed, so... perfect. His partner had been a lovely lithe little stallion who liked to play a little rough so when his brother dug a hoof into his rib it was just further fodder for the good dreams. He grumbled a bit, snorted, and then promptly fell further into his dreams. He wasn't about to wake up easily.
Curse knew that his lifestyle was starting to take a toll on him. He wasn't as young as he used to be. Not that he was old either! Heavens forbid he wasn't old, he was just feeling the abuse of fermented fruit to get wasted each time he plucked a target and took them from this world. He'd left that lithe little stallion in the woods behind where he was passed out with three claw marks across his neck, eyes fogged in death, and a pool of blood soaking the ground around him. He never consumed the flesh of those he killed despite having the stomach for it. There was something that felt too wrong about it to him. He was a professional assassin after all, not a serial killer. He didn't take lives willy nilly. Only those who deserved it. He took all possible contracts into great consideration, then vetted each carefully. When he found a target that deserved his particular style of justice he meted it out, but that didn't mean he didn't take pleasure where he could. For the easiest option to take someone out of this world was to take them for a tumble first.
He snorted again when his brother dug his hoof into his side again this time much harder. Smacking his lips and tasting the fermented fruit again twisted his lips into a grimace. He opened bleary eyes and looks up at his brother who had his gaze cast downward mumbling a phrase over and over. "Mmm... Plague? What's going on?" He said, voice a bit deeper from disuse after such a long sleep. He stood up and looked over his brother, noting in the back of his mind that it was rather dark outside for the time it should be, but that came second. He was worried for his brother who seemed unresponsive, just repeating his mumbled phrase over and over again. "Plague?!" Curse shouted.

Plague didn’t respond to his brother’s calls. He was so lost in his head he couldn’t focus on anything. He usually didn’t have guilt like this. This fear and guilt that really crippled him to the point where he was nearly catatonic. He was playing everything back in his head. Maybe there was something he did that caused this to happen. Maybe it was one of his odd jobs. Maybe it was something he had to steal or someone he had to kill. No that couldn’t be the reason for this. He did nothing wrong. At least in his eyes he didn’t. He always had a reason for doing what he did. While others might see it as horrible, he saw it as his duty and his way of life. There was no changing that unless he got bored of it, which could always happen in the long run.
It took him a minute or two before finally snapping his gaze to his brother, who looked panicked and worried. “I’m…I’m…fine..” He said in a low voice as he looked at him with sad eyes. Was this really happening because of him? Why would he be important enough to cause something to this magnitude? There was no way. As time went by the logical part of him began taking over and he became less tense and more stable. “Sorry..I..don’t know what is wrong with me. I think it’s whatever is happening..” He said to Curse before curling his tail around himself. He was starting to feel calmer than he was before. He wasn’t going to pester his brother about whatever he had going on the night before since all he had to do was take a guess. He knew his brother always had these wild nights and it was becoming more apparent that it was taking a toll on him. He could see it.
“What do you think is going on?” He asked his brother feeling as though time itself stood still at the moment. It was so strange and all he could do was look up at the sky.

Curse felt the air leave his lungs when his brother finally responded to him. Though fear still laced his voice he was talking, wondering about what this was and what was causing it. That line of questioning caused Curse to stop and debate himself. He looked up at the sky, the dark hole in the center of the sun with a ring of fire around it and felt the hair along his back raise with an instinctual warning that something was very very wrong. "Honestly? I haven't the slightest clue. Its never happened in our lifetime, nor to any of my targets cause you'd think in some of their lives if something like.... THIS happened they wouldn't be able to shut up about it." His tail mimicked his brothers and curled around his back leg in a comfort habit. He almost never did that, hadn't since they were children and their grandmother had given them a thorough dress down for not training as hard as they should have. "This feels like the end of the world..." He whispered hoping his brother hadn't caught the words. He looked around and everything seemed darker. The forest nearby appearing sinister, more so than usual. It was hair raising, literally. The hair on his back still standing on end giving him a weirdly feral appearance. He dug his claws into the dirt then into his own skin trying to test and see if it was just a dream. "Should we find mom and dad? See if they're okay? I mean I can't imagine why they wouldn't be... Dad is probably drunk as ******** and mom is always calm in situations like this..." His voice was shaking, a tremble deep in the tones. He didn't know what to do. Not at all. This was new. Terrifying... He had to concentrate on the ground and not look up at the ring of fire hanging in the sky with that dark hole in its center. It reminded him of a death clouded eye rotted away and he didn't like it. Not one bit.

Plague listened to his brother and usually he could easily talk sense into him, but he was also scared. He could hear it in the way he spoke. There was something about this that was even frightening to him. When he mentioned their mom and dad, he felt even worse because they didn’t even enter his mind at all. Maybe it was because he knew his mom would be like a rock and his dad would be passed out somewhere. He felt like they would handle this better than him and his brother. “Yes..let’s go find them. Maybe they have seen this before or..know what to do.” He said in a slightly panicked voice as he began walking with Curse.
Flicking his tail, he kept a steady pace with his brother wondering what exactly was happening and if this was something that could change their lives forever. Little did they know that this event wasn’t going to last much longer. As the pair disappeared into the trees, he felt a lot better knowing his brother was there by his side and that he wasn’t alone in feeling afraid.
