The annual celebration was upon them. It was a self-conceived celebration. One that Pen had started ever since they popped out from their basket. It was the day of the first snow thaw, when the muddied ground started to peer from the white that littered and dampened the ground. They were besotted with this time of the year. There was no other better time. Even traditions that were halyconic for others as they thought about the past did not hold a hoof to this time. There was no better time to sling mud at others.

Pen ruptured the wet and moist dirt in front of them with their claws, scooping a generous amount of the stuff before looking for their target. It didn't have to take long. There was quite an audience that surrounded them. There had to be, for such an event. With an odd yodel, Pen chucked the grit and grime at a black and blue soquili. If it didn't hit them, that was fine. The horse's familiar was quite close. They would do the trick as well.

This celebration was a time of chaos, not of merriment. Pen hated that pre-conceived notion of all traditions being filled with laughter and joy. How dull.

Coming to the familiar annual celebration Lia had not quite expected to be pelted with muck this soon. Indeed poor Orla took the brunt of the first hit. Sadly Lia did jot remain unscathed as the muck seemed to ricochet off the burly bears body onto their own pelt. Nose crinkling their gaze sharpened minutely as a few from the audience jeered and shouted some unkind cutting remarks. “Don’t listen dear heart..we’ll get them back easily enough.” Unperturbed Lia scooped up their own glob of grime and tossed it with a graceful flick at anyone that dared get too close. Whilst Orla took the chance at revenge and went after the most still soquili they could find. “Take that!” Shouting aloud the bear dodged a bit, quick to duck under Lia for added protection. Served them right for daring to go after the duo! Spying the brighter mares form ahead the bear grasped another paw full of muck..eager to dirty them up more. To contribute to the chaos.

Pen couldn't help the draconic smile that filled their lips as their mud splattered a bear's pearly white fur. Score! They jeered, their enthusiasm budding along with the crowd. Mud was flying, ricocheting off of soquili and familiar alike. Pen couldn't help but smile. Were they day-dreaming? They didn't expect this to be so much fun! By their interpretation, it looked like not even a frisky feline thought that the event was inane and a bane. Everyone was contributing to the whole foray.

It was so wild, that Pen forgot that they too, should be watching out for mud being slung their way. Pen, standing completely still gasped as mud was flung right at them, smattering their bright fur. "Hey!" They shouted, their voice cutting through the crowd. A smile enveloped their face. "An eye for an eye huh?" They walked over towards the bear familiar and their owner, looming over them. "I like it. Want to team up?"

The burly bear familiar growled when they were approached, ready to throw another glob of muck if needed. However the bright ponies words made both figures still eyes narrowed in mild distrust. Lia gave a small bow, smiling in greeting as the mud continued to fly all around them. “We would be most obliged to help such a lovely, fierce competitor as yourself.” With their alliance secure the much kore brown bear ambled forth, happily offering muddy piles of gunk to each pony in turn. Lia found themself daydreaming whilst this mysterious stranger moved with so much ferocious grace. How fascinating. Indeed they found their heart racing. Was this was it was like to become besotted with another? Surely not! Lia had not even learned their name..but maybe after this annual event had ended..that could be changed. “Behind you!” Shouting the blue soquili moved with their own grace, leaping across the divide to take a shot meant for the brighter. “You okay?” Grinning they watched as a further enraged Orla burst forward in a spray of dirt. The ricocheting muck splatted eagerly into the offending ponies face. “Serves them right! Well done Orla! Come fair one. We will work together to destroy the competition!” With a playful battle cry they were off again back into the fray.

Considering the bear was the first one that Pen hit, they were expecting some sort of scalding remark. A reprimand of sorts. And the bear did have their growl of warning but Lia appeared to pay it no mind. Pen's grin grew at the acceptance to team up. Fierce sent a nice zap down her spine. They were called mischevious, playful, and a villian. But the word fierce was new. They quite liked that.

Pen did not offer their thanks as they took the pile of goop into their meaty claws, but gave the familiar a nod of their head. Pen focused on the game, their cunning eye hitting each soquili with accuracy. Well, until their eye caught Lia's. They paused, considering the other horse. They were....well, attractive. They were so distracted that they didn't see the glob that was hurling their way until Lia pointed it out. Pen whipped around, ducking. "Thanks." It sounded weird out of their mouth. When the hell did they ever give thanks? It sounded nearly doggerel out of their mouths. Had they just taken a shot for them? Wild.

The mud was starting to slow down. Pen glanced towards their new found friend. "Wanna get out of here?"

The offer to leave had Lia laughing brightly, their body giving a light shake to rid itself of the majority of muck. “I’d love to. The name’s Lia and that grumbly thing there is Orla..pleasure to meet you.” Yes the other had been a strong contender, the annual event had went off without a hitch. Pleased as could be they jovially bumped shoulders with Pen, still smiling..eyes filled with twinkling mirth. “You’re a good sport too. Isn’t that right Orla?” From behind the familiar grumbled out an agreement, not one to mince words. What a marvelous end to the day!
