In the coming weeks the snow had shed its tears and the blooming green of spring welcomed them with open arms. The sun casting a warm glow upon the land in which they lived. For Palila, it was a time of renewal and growth, to which she took upon herself quite seriously, to which her desire to impart those values within others. And in this case, a handful little colt named Desiderius who was nowhere to be found….again. She sighed softly as she made her way through the trees to find him. He couldn’t have gone far. Hallows would have seen to that.
Speaking of the stallion, Hallows had been a fantastic friend and ally to her in the short time they’d known each other. Not only did he take her in during the darkest snowstorm of the season, but he ensured she always had fully belly and warm place to sleep, not to mention a good listening ear when she needed it. In doing so they forged a strong friendship, and she could visibly see his body stiffen less and less as the days went by. Although that might be due to the fact that she’d stepped up to help with the child rearing. Not that she could blame him. Parenthood was new to him, and as a first time parent it was all a learning process. One that Palila was happy to assist with.
“I take it that Desiderius has run off again?” speak of the devil.
“He has but that’s okay. We both know he doesn’t run off far. I’ll find him. You go do what you need to in order to continue securing your territory.”
With a short nod Hallows was off, and Palila watched him melt into the shadows until he couldn’t be seen anymore. The mare shook her shoulders and began walking once more, calling out to the young colt to encourage him to come out of hiding.
“Des! If you’re playing hide and seek you know I’ll find you.”
No response as was to be expected. This was the first time he'd done this to his father and her and it certainly wouldn't be the last.
With a soft chuckle Palila tried again, "Des, if you come out we'll have an awesome picnic with snacks down by the waterfalls."
Best way to encourage a small foal, especially a young colt that is growing up incredibly fast? Food. It was always food. It never let her down before with others and she was sure it wouldn't fail her now. And besides, it was almost lunchtime. Nobody could resist the call of decent food and good conversation. Palila was no exception to this rule either.
