The older stallion was a little winded as he made his way up the hill. He had selected the place for the lessons because of its view under an open sky and how open to the air it was, in case of fumes. It was a bit of an incline, however and the stallion was feeling his age in his bones as his knees creaked and protested on his way up. The younger horses will have no problem with this, he thought. He reached the top and carefully began laying out the supplies they'd need. He was teaching potions today and had many differently shaped bottles of varying opacity as well as a large basket full of different foods, plants, and liquids in labelled vials. The labels were old and a little smudged he noticed with a frown, squinting at them. He was pretty sure he could make them out. He continued setting out the different foods, herbs, and other ingredients they might need out on the blanket he had brought. Finished, he stood back and admired his work. Yes, this would serve nicely. He shook off the remnants of sleep and waited for his pupils to arrive.198 words

Lapin was excited to try something new. Potions! And maybe other things! He wasn't quite sure what all this entailed (haha tail), but he was going to try his best. He couldn't mess this up. He'd tried metal smithing and managed to not only burn some new holes in his coat, but part of the smithy. The Soquili that had been trying to instruct him had basically banished him forever. Lap wasn't allowed within 30 feet of what was left of the area, lest he accidentally set it ablaze. Again. Whistling, he trotted up the slope to where Old Man Sam had told him he'd be setting up. He noted it was a nice open area, less likely for Lap to set something on fire. Or someone. Although that was yet to be seen. "Hey, Samael!", he called to the older stallion so he didn't just sneak up on him. It looked like he'd finished setting up all the different stuff that they'd need for the lesson today. Old Man Sam had said his daughter would be coming too. Truthfully, Lapin was intruding on what was supposed to have been a private lesson and he knew it, so he was trying to be courteous. But when he saw Samael and asked him to teach Lap, he'd been kind enough to agree. Lapin was just hoping he didn't mess this up, too. WC: 231

Today was an exciting day for Glasya. It was to be a new lesson day with her father. Their last lesson had involved her learning about a plant and how to determine it’s uses. A lesson she had continued to study by applying the principles to the flora native to their home. This time they would be discussing potions. Eagerly she made her way quickly up the hill Samael had chosen for them. As she came close to cresting, she noticed the sound of another greeting her father. Ever polite to others, she slowed her pace as the two stallions and the equipment came into view.
“Good morn, father,” she greeted him before also bowing her head in greeting to the pawed flowery stranger.

The stoic stallion looked up impassively as Lapin arrived and nodded in greeting. “We’ll get started as soon as Glasya arrives, but feel free to get comfortable.” He gestured with his head towards the three stations he had set up with one facing the other two. Samael stood at this station and waited for Lapin to choose his own station and for Glasya to arrive. She obliged him shortly after, trotting up with her usual polite greetings. “Daughter,” he said in greeting, gesturing for her to take one of the stations before him.
His two pupils would find their stationed equipped with the various fruit, herbs, and oils they’d be working with. The oils were fragrant, overpowering the scent of the flowers and fruits and herbs, though Samael couldn’t shake the feeling he could smell something different on the air. Had the fruit juices fermented? He tried to take another whiff but the oils were potent. He decided to set the juice aside. He put it down on the ground between him and Lapin.
“If you’re ready your first step is to muddle the herbs.” There were mortars and pestles for them to grind down the herbs and release the oils. There were also knives and other instruments for cutting, trimming, clipping, and smashing the various ingredients he’d brought. The potions they were making were vitality ones, meant to help make someone feel better. They’d be able to taste them to test them at the end of the lesson. He carefully demonstrated how the herbs should be prepped and then motioned for his students to follow suit. He walked around them to observe them quietly.

Lapin bowed his head back to the young filly as she arrived, greeting her father. Lapin didn't want to ruin their polite greeting with his clumsy humor, so he turned and chose a station. Looking over his station, he noted all the fresh fruit and things, taking in all the different tools as Old Man Sam spoke. He realized that Samael had begun demonstrating, and tried to watch as closely as possible. He really didn't want to mess this up, but thankfully they weren't working with fire, at least yet.
Gently, he began working the herbs in the mortar, trying not to turn them into so much mush. The pestle slipped, and slid back out of the bowl, bounced off the table, and plopped into the grass. Lapin felt the heat rush to his cheeks, and quickly bent to pick it up. It had landed next to something Old Man Sam had set on the ground earlier as his daughter arrived, and the strong smell wafted over into his face as a gentle breeze picked up. He snorted to get the smell out of his nose, and lifted his head a little too quickly, smacking it on the bottom of the table. He let out an "Oof!", lifting his head back up properly, hoping Samael wasn't paying attention. Quickly, Lapin went back to what he was supposed to be doing.

Glasya took a quick glance at the space Samael had setup for them. She noted the three stations and many supplies they would be using. The scent of the oils tickled her nose as she moved to the last station. Once there, she carefully examined each of the herbs then fruits and finally oils. Mentally she noted their various uses before looking toward her father for his instructions.
With ease from her previous studies, she studiously worked the correct herbs into the mortar. Maneuvering the pestle was slightly awkward but she adapted shortly. Not long into the muddling, Glasya heard a thump followed by a sound of discomfort. She paused in her work to check on her fellow student. “Are you alright?” She intoned. Only now realizing that she had yet to fully introduce herself in her eagerness to learn the day’s lesson.

Samael continued readying the next steps of their lesson, barely paying attention to the adult student that had joined them or his daughter who was no stranger to lessons. He was surprised when Lapin ended up knocking his head in a blundering attempt to muddle the herbs. He turned his serious face towards the other stallion unblinkingly, staring at Lapin impassively, his dark eyes unreadable though the large stallion radiated gruff seriousness. It was clear he was not impressed. He glanced at his daughter, composed as always and already working the herbs well. The flit of a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth for the briefest of moments before he turned back to Lapin.
"Perhaps my daughter can help you with your herbs," he said dryly as he absently pulled the juice up from the ground between them, forgetting why it was on the floor to begin with. "We'll be mixing the herbs into a mixture of this juice and some other elements." He set the juice out and poured it into three equal portions in glass jars and passed one to each of his students and kept one for himself.
"Muddling the herbs releases their healing properties," he began, explaining in detail how and why working with the plants this way changed the effects they gave while mixing his own mixture before him. He went slow, watching for his students to be ready for the next step. Each added ingredient was explained in painful detail before it was added, with Samael explaining not only its properties but where to find it and collect it.
When his demonstration was done he explained it was time to taste the mixtures. "These should taste sweet with a bitter aftertaste," he said, drinking deeply of his, confident in his abilities.

Lapin felt the heat rise in his face as he flushed with embarrassment. When Samael's daughter asked if he was okay, he muttered a quick "oh yeah", but then felt even more embarrassed when Old Man Sam looked at him with those fathomless eyes of his. Lapin wasn't sure if his eyes were naturally just that dark, or if they were black holes that just absorbed all the light around them. Lapin was wishing the ground would open up and swallow him under that daunting gaze. "Uh, okay", was all he could think to say. He looked back over at Samael's young daughter and thought about how lucky she was to have a father that was so generous to teach her useful things at such a young age.
As Samael passed around the juice, Lapin stared at the glass. The scent coming from it was still strong, but he trusted that Old Man Sam knew what he was doing. I mean, obviously he's good enough to teach others, he thought. Maybe it was juice from a kind of fruit or veggie or something that Lapin had never seen before. He knew there were some wild ones out there that smelled awful, or tasted like a fancy dessert, so it made sense. Besides, he wasn't about to question anything Samael did or told him to do.
He followed Samael's instructions as closely as possible, looking over to his daughter when he wasn't sure if he was doing it right. After each painstakingly slow explaination, Lapin was sure he was finally starting to get the hang of this. When they had finished, and Old Man Sam had given them the go-ahead to taste them, Lapin almost downed his in one gulp. It was kind of sweet, but burned horribly on the way down, the heat blooming throughout his body as it settled in his stomach. Since he'd never done this before, he wasn't sure if it was supposed to feel like that or not. But it was also supposed to be a healing tonic, right? Something for vitaleminy? No....vitalititty? His thoughts were becoming kind of muddled, and his head began to swim. This was weird. Not entirely unpleasant, but weird.
Lapin staggered to the side, feeling like the ground was moving beneath him. He shook his head to try and get rid of the feeling, but it only made it worse and he ended up turning a circle trying to get his bearings. Lifting his head, Lapin tried to look over at Samael, but there were two of them now! What kind of potion was this?! "Uh...sir", he tried to say, but it was harder to form words now and they started to slur together. He blinked several times, and attempted to walk over to Samael, but his legs still weren't really working right. He teettered over one way, then almost knocked over his workstation as he tried to get closer to the older stallion. "Whoopsh", he giggled. It took him longer than it should have to reach the other male, but Lapin couldn't help as he kept leaning one way, then the other, trying his hardest to keep his feet under him. "Aaaaare you shhhhhhhure that was a vita...veeta...vege....a good poooo-" he burped loudly right in Samael's face, "shooooorry, poshun?"

She barely heard Lapin’s affirmation that he was alright with as quiet as it was. Her father she heard clearly though and her head tilted at his brash tone. Although used to it given how dedicated he was to his craft, she felt it was perhaps a little more gruff today than normal. Glasya did not bring it up, however, as it was not her place to question his methods of teaching. As the lesson continued she would respond here and there to the adults when the need arose. The filly even slowed her motions so that the pawed male could follow along easier. At least she hoped it was helpful to him. Once the juice was set in front of her, she could not help the crinkling of her nose at the strong odor. It reminded her more of one of Samael’s numbing tonics over the juice of a fruit. She made a note to query about its origins farther later.
Almost in the blink of an eye they had completed their respective potions. Glasya carefully examined hers while she saw her father and Lapin drink theirs. She was slow to imbibe having been taught previously to note how a potion or tonic behaved when correctly made. Once she felt certain it matched Samael’s description from the start of the lesson, she took a small sip of her brew. For the second time she found her face contorting as the potion hit her tongue. She wasted little time in swallowing it down feeling a warm tingle almost burning sensation as it did. This sensation caused her to sputter and gasp slightly. “Father…” she started to speak as her face warmed only to trail off in shock as she watched the other student bump into his work station.
Confusion marred her face as her eyes widened at his speech pattern. Sheltered as she was, she’d never seen someone behave in that manner before. For some reason it alarmed her more than it normally would have and tears began to fill her eyes. A sniffle even escaped her as her eyes looked back up to her father. Her smaller size made even the small sip affect her.

The moment the potion fell down his throat he realized his error. His eyes widened as he spit out what he could, though much of it had been swallowed. He looked to Glasya to warn her not to drink but it was too late as he saw her drink down the "potion". How had he messed this up so badly? Where had he put the bad juice? He glanced at the floor but knew his distraction had been their doom. He heard Lapin struggling and falling over and moved to try to help him, but Samael was also unstable on his feet as he stumbled towards Lapin, knocking into the other stallion instead. Samael growled angrily at himself. How had he been so careless? So stupid? His face flushed with embarrassment, or was that the potion? He curled his lip with disgust at himself. He had well and truly messed up, but he couldn't dwell on that now. He had to try to help them, especially Glasya who should never have to experience being drunk as a child. She must be scared. He moved towards her, trying desperately to will himself steady so as not to scare her further. "Daughter," he croaked out, his throat constricted with the effort to not slur his words. He stumbled nearer to her and then laid down beside her. "It... will... b e... ok.... just.... lay.... down...." he instructed with great effort. He looked to Lapin too. "You... too..." It was going to be a long couple of hours, but if they wait it out they would be ok. "Jussst sssshhtay herre" he said, the slurring finally catching up to him. The potion washed over his brain like a wave, making it harder to think. He sighed deeply. This was not how the lesson was supposed to go.

Having Samael knock into him made Lapin stagger to the side, unable to get his feet under him. He stumbled and lost his footing, going down like a rock. All of his breath wooshed out of him, and he groaned as he lay in the grass. He didn't really feel much of anything though. He tried to take stock of his body to see if he'd hurt himself, but his thoughts wandered as he lay there. He heard Old Man Sam tell his daughter to lay down, and decided it would probably be best if he stayed where he was. He'd managed to land in a nice, cool shaded part of their work area, so he wasn't really inclined to get up anyways. Since he wasn't facing them, Lapin decided to close his eyes to see if his head would stop swimming. It kind of helped, and he felt his body begin to relax more. After a couple of minutes, his breathing deepened and he began to snore heavily. It would be quite a while before he woke up with a terrible headache, but that was a problem for Future Lapin. For now, he dreamt of talking fruits and dancing glass vials pouring a rainbow of colored liquids between themselves.

Tears slowly streaked down her face as she continued to watch both male stagger. Glasya barely understood was her father was stuttering out while he laid on the ground next to her. Once she comprehended his words she curled herself into his side. A thud from nearby alerted her to the fact that Lapin had also managed to lay. The sound of the pawed male snoring soon filled the air. This made her realize that maybe she too should just sleep. She felt Samael sigh deeply and nuzzled her face more into him. This helped to calm her and dried some of her tears away.
As sleep slowly took her, Glaysa could not help but reminisce about their previous lesson. That lesson had ended with an adverse effect as well. Although it led to something helpful, the filly had to wonder if this was her fault. Unlikely as it was, these thoughts led her through a troubled sleep.

The stallion spared another glance at Lapin, seeing his rhythmic breathing and knowing he was asleep. Good. He nuzzled Glasya softly as she settled into him and then settled his own head upon the ground. He had had such plans for this lesson; this wasn't how it was supposed to end. His eyes drooped drowsily as he thought to himself at least the healing herbs will prevent a hangover...
