Roily's eyes fluttered open as a choked off groan escaped her throat. It had been a wonderful lazy day. Full of strong sun and soft winds. Perfect conditions for a nap under a large oak. Or so she thought.
The burning smoke slithered into her mouth as she jolted up, suddenly fully aware of the haze growing thicker around her. Her peaceful lazy day was ripped from her and replaced with panic inducing fire creeping over the hilltop towards her. Roily had no thoughts in her mind as she sprung her wings open and leaped into the air. She would regret later not stopping to check if anyone else was around and warn them. But in this moment her body took over completely and launched her into the air with all the force her young legs could give her.
Once in the air, her wings picked a random direction away from the fire that crept towards her. Her hair whipped her cheeks as the wind sped past her. It didn't take long for her lungs to start screaming at her. The fire and smoke were out of sight now but her eyes teared as if some of it had gotten trapped inside her lungs. Finally the dizziness overcame her and she glided down to solid Earth once more. She sent a silent prayer to the Heavens as her hooves skimmed the top of the stream her still burning eyes had noticed before her head started to spin.
It only took a few stumbling steps of a landing before her whole body gave out and she tumbled into the water on one of the banks. Even on the ground the Earth still spun, so she quickly dunked her head for a few seconds. Counting slowly as her heart raced, urging it to calm now that she knew she was safe. 'One' the fire is long past you now. 'Two' mama would have been proud to see how quickly you fled. 'Three' The water is safe, relax and let it flow over you.
Her head broke the surface and she gulped down clean fresh air. Her lungs only slightly burning now as she attempted to cough and blow the last dredges of smoke from her airways. The cool water flowing over her nostrils cooling the sensitive skin deep within her muzzle as water vapor started to soak in.
Finally, with her heart starting to believe her mind and starting to slow, she let her head fall down to the streams edge. The lapping of the water replacing the sound of thunder in her chest. She was safe.
She laid there for a few moments. Letting her calm thoughts wash over her as much as the slow flow of cool water washed over her hide. She furrowed her brows in thought. She hadn't given the flames time to catch her, right? As far as she knew only smoke had reached her before she took off in flight. And yet. Why were her legs starting to tingle? It wasn't the tingling shakeyness of weak muscles after a long sprint with the Herd. No, this was different. This was the shakeyness of foal legs all over again. She had to admit, she was still young, but surely she was far past the stage of foal legs. And yet...
Roily tried to take note of her other senses. She would remember each and every one so she could ask her mother when she was able to regain her strength and journey back to the Herd. Fire smoke couldn't possibly be permanent... could it? She tried to empty her mind to see if there had been any ill effects besides her weak limbs and burning lungs.
Her mind, she thought to herself. It was still dizzy and something else was off underneath the dizziness. Almost as if when she went to think of something, time would stop. And once she realized time had stopped, it snapped back and came to her again. She willed her eyes open now that the drops from her bangs had dried and no longer splashed her eyelids. It was oddly bright as well. She knew the sun had been strong when she had gone down for a nap under the tree, but would it have gotten brighter after noon?
She blinked a few times, trying to will her eyes to work. She still couldn't talk herself into moving her body, but maybe she could start with her eyes. After a few more blinks of her eyes she was finally able to withstand the brightness of the day. But now everything she tried to concentrate on had a slight waver to it. As if she was looking out at a vast lake and could see the waves of heat rippling above the water. Instead, now her eyes looked over the small clearing she was in and smiled as she saw a bushel of flowers dancing to a soundless melody.
She couldn't help but smile as she saw the swaying flowers. With everything that had gone wrong since she woke up this one thing calmed her more than she could ever imagine. Somewhere in this world, a fire was ravaging and burning the life around it. But it would also create new life after it was burnt out. And while that happened, she could stay here. Stay and watch the dancing flowers that moved their leaves to the soft humming sound that rippled out of her throat. The flowers even showing her that the burning sensation in her lungs was now gone. She lifted her head and smiled as she took a deep breath to enter a long held note.
She wasn't yet brave enough to raise to her hooves. The dizziness was still awash over her. But she was getting a little more used to it as she felt the rhythm in the softly swaying of her head that matched the flowers. She couldn't wait to get back home and tell her mother all about this. She wasn't sure she'd ever want to go through this experience again, but maybe she could keep the memory of the dancing flowers in her mind always.
