He snorted. Not awake. Asleep, it's hard to keep shapeshifting under control. You change constantly—usually different forms of what you were, unless you have a dream, then you're the form you are in the dream.

"Ooh." Semi said, interested. "It sounds fascinating...in a very weird way."

At first, when you get one, it happens randomly. Then, when you get it under control, you barely have to think about it—it happens. He nuzzled her again.

Semi laughed, petting Zach more. "I never thought that someday I'd be petting a wolf about my size. I wonder what Sensei would say." She sighed.

He licked her again. Good job?

Semi laughed as she was licked, then sighed sadly. "Probably..."

He whimpered and nudged her with his nose. Don't look so sad. I don't like it.

"Sorry." Semi rubbed Zach's muzzle. "It just makes me sad. I haven't seen him since this crap happened...I worry about him a lot."

He shifted into a human, looking about nineteen with long black hair and golden eyes, different from his usual form; however, his bright red wings flared out, then settled around Semi as he hugged her. "Don't worry," he murmured, "I'm sure he's fine."

Semi nodded, tightly hugging him back. "Sensei's always alright. He was half immortal, I swear it."

He smiled and gave her a gentle kiss on the cheek. "Half immortal doesn't seem likely; very lucky, perhaps, if luck were to be involved."

Blushing, Semi looked down. "Yeah...yeah, I guess." She shifted her feet before looking Zach in the eye. "Thanks. It's been a while since I've had a conversation with someone so nice for this long."

He smiled. "You're welcome. And thank you, because it's nice to talk to someone other than a scientist, or, really, anyone in the military that asks me anything. It's always whether I'm insane. Always. When they know I'm not." He sighed, hugging her closer.
