Gabrielle_AnimalLuver mmm, nitrites and nitrates still really high. Ammonia still zero. I'm so anxious to be done and so nervous on account of not knowing what fish to get. Maybe I should forget the mid level schoolers, I could just have one betta and a pleco.
You're probably not going to have a problem. Have you asked them their trade in/return policy just in case? On a related note, my brother just set up a tank and used the birthday money I sent him to buy fish for it. He has a betta, some neon tetras, a couple of platies and a balloon molly. So far everyone is gone, except he removed the betta last night because apparently the balloon molly gave birth 0.0

wait WHAT!? everyone died?
edit: No I haven't asked anyone their policy yet sad I'll do that next time I drop in. The two stores have pretty different options, if I go for hawaii platties I'll have to get them at the pet store, I saw an all yellow platty but can't remember the name at the aquarium store. Female betta's only at the aquarium store. Clown pleco only downtown, although the pet store doesn't label properly so I'll ask them if they have any. Sometimes it just says "pleco" mad

Vanilla eXee LOL! I meant to write that everyone is good!HAHA! way to throw me off! rofl So... if males can coexist with platties etc. Do I have an even better chance with a female or is it the same? I would THINK better cause the females don't seem to attack each other. They might pick on each other as the articles I read suggest but they don't seem to be flat out aggressive.

Females usually do better, they can be more aggressive than males, but if you get one from the community tank then I see no issues.

I agree with Nilla. If they are already be kept together, and every one is fine, then you should ok.
Dont worry too much, that'll just make it worse lol

YAY, I think I will go with a female then. Just it being my first community tank I think will put my mind at ease. I am going to stress guys its what I do lol.
I can't pick up fish till...Oh gawd, till Sunday morning earliest (next week) otherwise not for almost 2 weeks. So my tank SHOULD be cycled by then I hope. I might end up buying each fish at different stores lol. Clown pleco downtown, unless the local one has. Female betta at the aquarium store and then platies at the local store. Ugh, I'm getting iimmppaaattiieenntt

Start with the Platies first, if you can. Then the Pleco (because he has a higher bioload), and then the Betta.

Adding more ammonia won't help it go any faster, the bacteria have a set life cycle unfortunately. Just gotta be patient. I know it is difficult, but on the bright side, all of the fish you want are available so that's good!

bbuuttt, how long are the ammonia-nitrite bacteria gona survive without any ammonia?
I did think platies first would be a good move. Then Pleco Then Betta. How long do I wait between each? The only downside is I still haven't decided what kind of platies lol. There was ONE all yellow plattie at the aquarium store I liked, don't remember what he was called though and I can't compare back and forth easily cause they're all at different stores. I also don't want to drive all the way downtown just to LOOK, I'm only doing that when it's time to get the pleco. Which means if I see a mid schooler I like it will be too late.

You only have to wait however long it takes you tank to get back to normal levels of ammonia, nirtites and nitrates. How long that'll be, dunno. No longer than a couple weeks though, if you do your water changes. While adding new fish, I'd do around 25% every couple days.

Akari_32 Gabrielle_AnimalLuver OMG OMG OMG!!! Nitrites are a lil lower today ninja Still really high, but... it's a tiny bit lighter color today lol Yay! It's really exciting cause when I noticed the ammonia start to go down, like the next day it dropped to zero. BBUUTT, I can't get fish until next Thursday sad I'm away this weekend and then stores close before I finish work Mon-Wed and I can't really leave it in the station all day. The cops might get mad at me if they find a fish in their garage LOL
