Age: 34 (3541.01.23)
Sex: Female
Sexual Orientation: Demisexual
Weyr: High Reaches Weyr
Rider Rank: Wingrider
Previous Rank/Craft: None
Physical Description:
Lilah is relatively short, about 5'2", heavyset of build and soft around the edges, even with all the physical activity involved in being a dragonrider. She has blue eyes and medium-brown hair, and a round face that's quite pleasant if she isn't scowling about something.

Personality:
Lilah's one of those people who walks around with their own personal raincloud to keep them company, and not much else. She is a complete and total pessimist who spends most of her time brooding over what can go wrong where - and it will go wrong, of that she is absolutely sure. The worst is always a possiblity, and she's not going to ignore that; quite the opposite, she is hyper-aware of the potential for failure, especially her own. She goes into everything she does with the thought that she's not going to succeed, or at the very best scrape by. Over time, it's turned into a self-fulfilling prophecy: there's no point in trying hard if you're just going to fail anyway, so she doesn't, and consequently fails. She was, in fact, quite convinced that she would never Impress a dragon, and was probably more likely to get mauled and die. It does happen, after all, and it would have been just her luck to be the one it happened to. Still, if she hadn't Impressed Bayeth, she'd have been a Candidate until she aged out - what else could she do? She certainly couldn't take up a craft!

A peculiar result of her pessimism, Lilah is nearly unshakable. She's spent so much time thinking about how things can go wrong and believing they will that when they do, she's ready for it! She accepts bad situations quite calmly and without fear. She's also completely unconcerned with appearances or with what other people think of her...since they probably don't like her, and trying to change that is, of course, pointless. She might be a failure, but at least she's an independent one. On the rare occasion that someone does like her, Lilah is a loyal friend, not that it will spare them any of her pessimism. If anything, they might be subject to more of it, since she actively cares about what happens to them. Of course, one of these days they'll probably find someone else to be friends with and she'll get left behind, but until then, she's got their back.

Lilah doesn't do a lot of small talk, and when she does pipe up, it's often to share her bleak outlook on whatever the current situation or subject is. It's not a conscious effort to bring people down, she just feels that they should be informed. Then they won't be surprised when things go south, and if they are, she can pull out the 'I told you so.' Aside from being right, one of the few things that makes her happy is food. It's hard for eating to go wrong, after all, unless you're a complete idiot and you choke, or the food's bad and you get sick. Still, food is almost always a good thing!

When it comes to energy level, she's below average, mostly by choice. She could keep up with a faster pace if she really needed to, but otherwise, her 'why bother?' attitude keeps her slow and steady instead. She has endurance in spades, however, and can weather almost anything the world throws at her (not that she won't complain about it). In her view, she doesn't have low self-esteem - she is, in fact, perfectly content with herself the way she is. It takes all kinds, and she accepts that her particular 'kind' is the pessimist/realist; you won't ever find her wishing she was anyone different.

Positive Trait List realist, unflappable, content
Negative Trait List pessimist, defeatist, unmotivated

History:
Lilah grew up a perfectly ordinary weyrbrat at Southern Weyr; she has no idea who her parents are, and is perfectly fine with that. Her life so far has been perfectly ordinary as well, though largely devoid of friends. She's spent most of her life observing rather than participating, content to remind everyone of the not-so-bright side of life when they bother to listen, or if they get stuck with her for some task - especially then. If you can hurt yourself doing a particular task, Lilah probably has by now, and if she hasn't, it's only a matter of time. If you can mess it up, she definitely has in some way or another, and she'll probably tell you all about it. Hey, maybe you won't make the same mistake. But then again, maybe you will. Suffice to say, there's a good reason she doesn't have (m)any friends.

She entered Candidacy at 14, in spite of the looming possibility of being killed while Standing...which against all odds and much to her amazement, never actually happened. She does sport some claw scars on her right thigh from one incident, but the hatchling responsible quickly moved on to swipe at a few other girls rather than focus on any one of them, so all in all it wasn't too bad. Clutch after clutch passed, and Lilah became increasingly convinced she would never Impress, but then what the shaff was she going to do? Drudge stuff, probably. Whatever. Fine.

Then, at a Hatching when she was 23, a chunky little blue got himself about halfway out of his shell before giving up and calling for her to help him. Lilah and Bayeth made it through Weyrlinghood somehow, then transferred out to High Reaches in spite of their opinion on female blueriders (which she thinks is stupid, but also irrelevant, since she doesn't actively care what anyone thnks about her); as one to always assume the worst, Lilah agreed that Thread's return was inevitable, and wanted to be prepared in the event that it did. And it did happen, and they were prepared, so ha! Except now they're probably going to die fighting it.

Oh well.

Age: 11 (3564.02.14 Sarath x Lorcath)
Color: Blue
Size: 52'
Physical Description:
Just a stocky little blue who tends to carry some extra pudge, nothing exceptional to see here. Now missing his left hind leg.

Personality:
Bayeth would just like to take this opportunity to point out that he's no wonder dragon. He's just a little blue (a bit on the chubby side, now that you mention it) who knows his place and does his work. So really, you shouldn't stare at him like he's got hidden potential like some dragons, because really, he doesn't. Just so we're all on the same page here.

Some might call it low self-esteem, but to Bayeth he sees his choice of temperament as acceptance. He knows he's only average and that suits him just fine. There's not much that this little blue doesn't accept, tolerant of just about anything when it comes to his person. Children poking his headknobs, firelizards sunning on his back, other dragons resting various body parts on him; he is 100% fine with all of that. He likes company, and since he can't always get up the courage to say what he wants, he's quite happy to let other dragons (and humans) "walk all over him" in a sense just so that they'll hang around him. When he's old enough to live in his own weyr, his weyr-neighbour will find him to be a very hospitable blue, eager to share and make sure that his partner is well and comfortable. Children will find him to be exceeding gentle and patient, and he may in time make a good Search or teaching dragon.

While he's tolerant of the here and the now, Bayeth is a huge worry wart. He has a very bad habit of "worrying out loud" as it were, broadcasting his thoughts to the greater area whenever he thinks there's a problem. It's not always words from this blue; sometimes he just sits in the opening of his weyr (or when he's younger, on his Weyrling bed) and bays his woes to the Weyr. When something bad is coming, be it anything as small as a visiting gold he doesn't trust or a winter storm, Bayeth feels the need to tell everyone. For a dragon he has a surprisingly good weather sense, which may be the only thing that helps smooth over his baying habits.

The only other time he's vocal to this extent is during Flights. Though he may not always participate, Bayeth can rival a Rising Gold with his voice whenever a green manages to excite him.

Food will always be one of Bayeth's weak spots, and no matter what his rider does he'll always be a little on the tubby side. But that just makes him more comfortable to rest on, right?

Why Me?
Lilah, we'd like to introduce your raincloud to its companion.

Worry wart Bayeth can understand Lilah. Bad things happen and they happen a lot. Just because people try and make the best of them doesn't mean they don't exist, and he is happy to share his woes with his rider. And while he's never ready for it, Lilah's independence will help him be ready for it. Bayeth, in return, will offer his gentle, unshakeable companionship and together they can ride out the bad times whenever they come.

Bayeth's correctness when it comes to weather woes may help people take his rider more seriously whenever she points out the not-so-bright side of life. His graciousness and tolerance of people may also, in time, help her make a few more friends in the Weyr.

Inspiration:
The Basset Hound is a short-legged breed of dog of the hound family. They are scent hounds, bred to hunt rabbits by scent. Their sense of smell for tracking is second only to that of the Bloodhound. The name Basset is derived from the French word bas, meaning "low", with the attenuating suffix -et, together meaning "rather low". Basset hounds are commonly brown and black and most often spotted, but also exist in a variety of colors.

The Basset Hound is seen as an especially friendly breed. For this reason they are an excellent pet for children. Many Bassets "forget" the training when a reward is not present. Bassets should be on a leash when out on walks.

Bassets are known to be a vocal breed. Bassets might howl or bark when they want something or to suggest that they think something is wrong (like a storm is coming). They also use a low, murmuring whine to get attention, which sounds to many owners as though their Bassets are "talking." This whine is also used by the hound to beg (for food or treats) and varies in volume depending on the nature of the individual hound and length of time it has been begging.
