"Well it's a stupid superstition." he muttered back, waving his arm to show the sleeve flapping before rolling them both up to be a little more manageable. Surely that wouldn't violate their superstition.
"Which egg..? Hmm.." He looked around the ones gathered. The first thought to jump into his head was just not that one, looking at the Banshee egg, but his eyes finally settled on the Hellhound egg and he smiled. "I liked-"
But before he could finish his sentence, all hell broke loose on the sands. The bronze hatchling, whose progress he had been carefully watching, as if sensing that his attention was momentarily elsewhere, decided to take that moment to launch itself onto Dolmar, punctuated by several gasps, shouts, and screams from all around the sands and stands.
Instincts kicking in, he glanced at Cesare briefly before moving towards the attacked group. Grabbing both Shahera and Marinel by the arm, he pulled them both back, away from the rampaging hatchling. Dolmar... Well, there was nothing he could do for him. If it was Cesare maybe it would be a different story. But he wasn't getting himself killed (or kicked out of the hatching) over this. He was still a useful ally though. At least he could try to help his brother.
"Sorry." he muttered, letting go of Shahera's arm when he realized she had already started to move away. "Instinct."

Isilje She'd been so focused on the eggs. A bronze was not for her, and she knew it, so her focus had been there when tiny Siren popped forth. Such a beautiful little Green. Her eyes warmed, and she would have said something....at least until a sound got her eyes to turn. Blood. A hatchling, the Bronze, MAULING a boy. The petite girl could see every twist of claw and maw, see the way teeth tore in to flesh....Faranth help her, she was going to be sick. Pressing her hands to her mouth, the girl let out a weak sob, wishing dearly that she could keep the bile from coming up from where it threatened. She wanted to help, but....if she got in the way, the little one could easily go for her. Wasn't someone going to stop the Demon? She wasn't strong enough...
C'yx and Blue Iriseth
The voice, at least, was familiar enough not to startle him, and Zephyr's squeaked warning. The tiny green untangled herself from his mop of hair to peer at Danzik through it's curtain. She trumpeted a small tune, chittering to C'yx of how pretty this one was, to her eyes. Could she play? When the answer was a firm no, it got the Flit to settle as C'yx sighed, "Truth be told, I am only here because Iriseth wished to share this with Eosphoth. I am not one for festivities." Not any more....Though he couldn't lie. The sound of the dragons' humming would make a lovely song. Maybe he could play the like. That was when he felt the alarm from Iriseth, and could SMELL the blood. Faranth help him, one of the hatchlings was mauling someone, "Well....This clutch started taking blood early." It was so casual, like he didn't really care.
Iriseth crooned lovingly to her, singing his own song for her before joining in to sing for the Eggs. They all deserved the love and warmth, and should know that theirs were waiting. Demon's entertainment at mauling someone got only a heavy sigh, the blue raising his head and stopping his song as he watched. What on Pern had the human hatchling done to deserve such wrath, he wondered, Well....That one will be interesting.
Humming, a song that twisted up differently, more beautiful and horrible at the same time than any she'd heard from another dragon filled Amra's ears. Drawing her eyes from the bronze to the glistening rainbow shell of the only egg that hadn't even bothered to give her so much as a slighting dismissal like the zombie egg had, she wondered what the hatchling must think of it's sibling strutting around. When the shell was slit and the beautiful green dragonet that stepped out made her heart nearly stop.
But chaos was ensuing to her right as the Demon dolled out vicious attacks to one Candidate who's name she drug up in the bloody terrifying moment as Dolmar. Though she made no effort to back away from the bronze she did feel enough fear to force herself to stop. Clear thoughts, clear mind. No strong emotions if she could help it!
Turning back to the little green Siren once more she felt her heart beat faster. Greens were small but beautiful female dragons and she could respect this one's need to draw the eye in her direction. Maybe it was because it was the first hatchling she stood a chance to Impress, but she was truly lovely.
Eyes should be drawn towards your beauty. she thought towards the dragon and let a rare smile tug at her lips.

Ty'bar & Asilaeth
When the bronze hatchling had brushed against Vennodren he tried as hard as he could not to bite his lower lip in anxiousness. Crossing his fingers for the man he was lost in the horror that began to happen before his very eyes. The bronze tore into a boy with laughter like nothing he'd heard before!
That is most deliberate, did the boy anger him?

Well, s**t.
There were maulings and then there were maulings, and from where Dezerac stood that looked and sounded like it might not be one the Candidate in question - no one he knew, probably a Western kid - was going to survive. He set his jaw and watched, not out of any morbid amusement but for the sake of self-preservation, in case it lost interest in its toy and came looking for another. The bronze had never seemed confused, frightened, or angry, had given no outward signs since Hatching that it would be inclined to such violence. There was intent behind the attack.
The man curled his lip, ever more disappointed in the Demon. All that power, all that potential, and it did...this. If he could have afforded to, he'd have turned his gaze away from it, but to deny it his attention would be every bit as unwise as it would be satisfying. He wasn't going to take his eyes off the beast until it Impressed.

Mother, came the sweet voice of the as yet unImpressed Green Siren. Are you lost, mama? For this was the Siren's stage - although she would, of course, share it with mother dearest. The baby sent her mother a well of fondness, before turning from the carnage to seek a dance partner of her own. First she sniffed delicately at the boys, trying to decide if one of them would be her accompanist.
... And then she heard a voice. It was coming from... somewhere else.

Miach (HR)
Never before had Miach thought she would be in a position where she had to stand idly by while someone got hurt. That she couldn't step in and do something about it. However, if she did step in while the dragonet was digging his claws into the boy as if he was nothing more than a scratching post she would surely be reprimanded and may miss out on the chance to impress--if there was a dragonet here for her. Or worse, the fallout would happen to them as well. Miach gritted her teeth and clenched her fists which shook violently at her sides, her attention instead going to the Eggs that were starting to move and open. It looked as though the Frankenstein Monster's Egg and Siren were ready to make their apperance. In fact, not more than a moment later the Siren pulled herself from the egg.
What a beautiful little green! Although, it didn't seem put off by the actions her brother was dolling out against the boy. Miach turned her attention from the Siren and looked towards the other eggs. It proved to be disappointing. Miach turned her attention once more to the boy Dolmar, and noticed one of the other boy's coming to his aid. Miach's heart went out to the boy. Not taking a moment more to debate what she would do, she moved towards Dolmar and Ladellan. "H---H----Here. Le--t m-m-me help." Miach stuttered out as she helped try to pull the boy from the wrath the bronze was reaping upon him.

Kambri (W)
With the boys acknowledging one another out of the way, it wasn't long before a third joined them. While Kambri couldn't say he knew the third candidate, they did look familiar. Maybe from a class? Kambri didn't much pay attention to other students around him because he struggled with some of the lessons--those around dragons tended to be easier--but one's that involved numbers or more advanced writing/reading usually gave him trouble. In fact, he often stumbled over them. What most of his classmates didn't know was that Kambri would go back to his room and poor over the alphabet and other simple words. Reading and writing had not been something a thatcher had needed to know in Black Sands.
It took a moment for Kambri to equate what he was seeing unfold before his eyes. The bronze was attacking the boy without a care in the world. In fact, it seemed like the little dragonet had a vendetta against the boy with how viciously he was attacking him. "What is he doing?!" He said to his fellow candidates in horror, much louder than he realized. He had known that during the touching many candidates had caused the eggs to stir and in fact, the touching had seemed to be a giant disaster because of it. But whatever the boy had done, was it worth this? His honey colored eyes latched onto the green that had just emerged from her shell. He had remembered touching the egg and was surprised to see that she was just standing there. Maybe one of the dragonets would help the boy? The other candidates couldn't do anything but stand there and hope the same fate didn't await them. Learning about dragonets attacking the candidates was different from watching it happen before your very eyes.

Lennik "I...have seen a lot of dragons. Over 200 of them have passed me up since I started standing and they do all sorts of odd things. Humming isn't the strangest thing you'll se-" he broke off as the demon suddenly decided it was time for blood for the blood bronze, his dark face paling as much as it could at the sight as instinctively he placed his body between the sight and both Alya and Rio.
"That happens sometimes too..." he added grimly. "My advice is keep a hatchling at least the distance you think you'll need to duck and cover from an attack away unless it's clearly yours....for obvious reasons...."
Oh boy.

Shalaera Laena turned to absolute goo, sprawling out and stretching little legs in front of her as she trilled and leaned her head into the skritches offered to her. Shalaera sighed at the sight with a delighted contentment. If she could guarantee babies would be like her and not like the screeching mass of anger on her shoulder...well...she'd be a happy girl.
"Well I s-" she broke off as the pink egg shelled, brows raising. "Well now! Siren was next to shell and it is a green...." she looked back down to her sheet of bets to hurriedly take some notes before the sound of yelling - and some shock from the stands caused her to look up...and then down again. "Well, eventful already aren't we?"

Silviu (HR)
Ohhhhhhhhhhh dear.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh dear.
Ohhhhhhh…
The sound and sight of the mauling, and scent of blood made Silviu’s muscles collectively clench. This was so much worse than watching his father butcher a herdbeast. This was so much worse than gagging his way through butchering a herdbeast himself. This was a dragon butchering a human being. The cavern spun around him, and he lurched forward, grabbing the shoulder of the nearest candidate. Then he retched, creating an artistic representation of his feelings in the sand with his last meal.

Martirae
And here came that little pink shelled baby. Martirae gave it an appraising look, nodding and allowing it to keep her attention for a little longer. She could have a green. Unlike the bronze (which from the sounds of things, was causing a hell of a scene) at least. The sounds of shouting and the strange laughter did pull the dark woman's attention towards what ws happening with - oh, oh shards. That looked painful and while Marty wasn't heartless, she also knew better than to try and help.
She'd end up mauled, dead, or it would make Dolmar's situation worse. Still, it held her attention longer than she consciously wanted anything to be able to when it didn't involve her. It wasn't her first time witnessing a mauling, after all.
Reigning in self control, she forced herself to turn her attention back to The Siren.

She wasn’t prepared for the tug and whirled as she stumble, ready to fight whoever had in her mind attacked her. Migel. He had already let go too. She relaxed before the blow connected with the boy. “Don’t do that.” She hissed. She had been trying to distract herself so she would not go try and kill the baby dragon to rescue Dolly because that would not go over well. But that would be what she would have tried to do. She did notice Marinel also being dragged back. That at least was good. He would try something supremely stupid if given the chance. Shahera grabbed the other arm of Marinel’s with both hands and backed up with Migel. Her grip was firm and it would take a lot to break free.

L'ex
"Awww, aren't you a sweet,"L'ex cooed at the flit loaf and continued to give her gentle skritches. "She has such a sweet temperament," they replied and looked up.
"Well one down, 9 to go," L'ex mused, nodding considering their bet and gave a slight wince. "Very eventful. Hopefully the boy lives, it sort of sours the feast when you know someone dies." Maulings happened, they really did. Death, well, L'ex was still sensitive to people dying in front of them.
"So, Siren is a green, which girl do you think she would go to?" They questioned.

Henwas and Huarwar
Things seemed to be going slowly at the moment. The only hatchling on the sands was still the Demon. The Siren seemed to begin to shake and hatch though the twins attentions was torn from the Siren and the shaking Frankenstein Egg as a cry went out.
The Demon had latched onto a candidate and it did not seem like it had been for an impression. Without thinking Huarwar began to move forward and then felt an iron grip on his wrist. Turning he saw Henwas there, holding onto him, watching what was going on. "Don't try to be a hero you idiot." The words were hissed to Huarwar as his twin pulled him back towards him, further away from everything. They thought they could hear the laughter of the bronze dragon as he tore into the candidate but it was hard to say.
Huarwar was mesmerized by what was going on. There had been maulings before but never this early on. The fact it had been the Demon who had attacked, didn't surprise him. Underneath those honeyed words he had seen through the dragonnet during the hatching. His eyes moved to look at Henwas as he too just stared and watched, was there an almost gleeful look upon his features? Surely not. The Demon reminded him a little too much of Henwas and Huarwar hoped he was not meant for his brother.
"Oooh!" Alya squealed when the bronze seemed to find a boy he liked, his eyes whirling.... and then muffled a tiny shriek when he lunged and began mercilessly tearing into the Candidate. Hot blood spilled upon the sands, and she didn't hesitate to bury her face into Lennik's shoulder, gladly hiding from the sight. Her shoulders trembled as her thoughts whirled. She should run, maybe! This--this was too much! First Vimiath nearly eating that girl who'd hurt the egg, and now--
Shiver, shiver, shiver. She didn't even realize that the Siren Egg had hatched!
--
Iathe
"Your first?" Iathe repeated, her brows arching in surprise. "That's alright. Just do what you were told, and follow your instincts. I know you aren't stupid," She offered a tight smile to take the sting out of her words, "So you'll be fine."
The bronze seemed to know what he wanted, and she nodded with approval as he stepped forward--only to flinch as he fell upon the boy in question with vicious, slashing talons. "Shards and shells!" She swore, having never seen something like that before. Why, it seemed downright deliberate, rather than provoked!
"Easy." She muttered to the two girls beside her--but also herself. "Just be ready to move in case he decides he wants more." A murmur caught her attention, and she risked a glance see another shell split. A green out of such a large egg! And the egg that had pulsed with such anger... it was beginning to rock.
She nudged both Roana and Kiri, pointing at the rocking egg. "It's the one from before." Roana would know what she meant. She wasn't sure if Kiri had been caught up in the palpable rage.
If Iathe was lucky, she'd come out of this with only a few more scars than before.
--
Nikohal (stands)
"Oh ho!" The man roared with surprise at the sudden mauling, reaching over to companionably jostle whoever was nearby with an elbow. "A spitfire, that one! Hopefully he makes his point and moves on, eh?" Despite his cheer, his broad grin was strained with worry. No one wanted any of these lads or lasses to die, that was for sure!
As the green elegantly emerged, he was pleased to see that she was apparently in a much better temper than her brother! Though he'd seemed calm before...
Dragons. Just as tempestuous as the ocean, apparently!

Kieza (High Reaches)
Kieza felt herself pulled slightly sideways as a hand was gripped tightly onto her shoulder and another Candidate turned pale green before wretching. She swallowed heavily, before gripping the boy's arm assuredly. She patted Silviu's back, taking her attention off the going-ons around her to comfort a fellow Candidate. "Are you alright?" She said, trying to sound as comforting as possible as she kept a steady grip on the boy's arm to keep him from falling over in his dizziness. "Just breathe, alright?" She murmured. She was not nearly as phased by the bloodshed and gore, coming from a farm where such things happened often.
He couldn't quite hide the jealousy he felt for the Candidates who had caught the young bronze's attention. Attention he craved to receive. Then, the dragonet focused on a particular Candidate... one, by the way he stood, that Jagmund took an immediate dislike to. He frowned, expecting to see the whirl of rainbow in the bronze's eyes...
But instead was greeted by the sight of blood. Shards! That dragonet diliberately attacked Dolmar! He had never seen or heard of that happening in his life. Dragonets attacked if you got in their way or as they panicked, looking for theirs... not deliberately! Jagmund couldn't look away, frozen by the horror and strongly aware of his heart pounding in his chest. What had the man done...?
