Her older sister, Risa, suffered from a painful chronic illness, and her family was constantly requesting help from unicorns the next valley over for help with their daughter's condition, but it never seemed to work. It felt to Ullita like Risa always got all of the attention in their family, and that there was never enough attention for her. When her older sister finally left home as an adult, she breathed a sigh of relief, but by then it was too late; growing up with Risa had left a mark on her. She ended up leaving home looking for somewhere that didn't remind her so much of home. She found herself in a strange forest with a mysterious voice calling out to her to escape before a time limit ran out. Nothing happened to her when the time ran out, but she still feels cheated somehow. The next day, she met a pair of travelers who had just come from the forest, one of them bearing a glowing lantern. Growing up, Ullita was terrified of the dark, and she craved this glowing object. So she pretended to be the mysterious voice from before. Unfortunately, the strange stallion saw right through her disguise. He introduced himself as Long Jon Dark, and his companion, a ferret, as Long Black Addie. He invited her to return to his own home, a local forest called the Gloomwood. She agreed, and has lived there ever since, learning the strange ways of the herd that once lived there, and slowly falling in love with Jon.
It's true, the Gloomwood can be a dark and forbidding place, the exact kind of grimness that Ullita hates, but in springtime and summer, the forest can be bright and welcoming in many places, and there are wildflowers here she's never seen before. Most important, though, she likes the people who live there, and she feels hope for the future that she might be able to help bring new life to these woods.Personality: Like her sister, Ullita takes a long time to trust someone, and even after she trusts them, she may read sinister motivation where there is none to be found. But once she gets to know and care for someone, she will never betray them or their trust. Despite (or perhaps because of) her own dishonest nature, Ullita hates liars and cheats; if you lie to her, you'd better have a damn good reason for it. Even if someone lied to her, though, she wouldn't physically hurt them, though she might say some very hurtful things to them. She doesn't believe in physical violence; in part because she doesn't like the idea of physically hurting someone, and in part because the sight of blood or broken bones gives her the creeps. Where Ullita's distrust comes from, not even she can say; it might be from growing up with Risa (a notorious trickster and liar) or it might come from the environment she grew up in. She and her sister grew to believe that the unicorns that were trying to heal Risa weren't actually trying, and were instead fleecing the Petallea cerynei. Certainly, their herd paid for it in land ceded to the unicorn herd, and they watched their territory grow smaller and smaller every time the unicorns failed to heal Risa of her illness.
Ullita has an active imagination, which might account for her dishonesty as well as her fear of the dark. The Petallea cerynei were storytellers, with a rich tradition of performance. Telling a story was not merely reciting it from memory, but acting out all of the parts, with full voice acting and sound effects. It has helped Ullita manipulate people to get what she wants. If she were to be confronted with her dishonesty, she would point out that she only lies to strangers, and never to friends. This would imply that she is only offended by a friend's lies, and while it's true that she takes it harder when it's a friend, it's not true that she's never offended when a stranger lies. (She is a little hypocritical on this account.)
Ullita is steadfast, slow to change her beliefs or opinions, but this comes with a certain amount of stubbornness. Once she makes up her mind, she does not change it easily. This is part of what makes her such a loyal friend, as well as an untrusting stranger.
