Never mind then. That rock felt as heavy as it looked.
Setting it down with a little groan, Denbe stretched and limbered himself up, staring at his third stone. If he could lift this one, he would continue on, and that would be that. If he couldn't... well, he had to lift this one up. He was running out of days, and as well as he had done so far with this athletics competition he thought he might have an actual chance to progress to the iaijutsu competition! To place amongst the final eight, from a minor clan, it could do great things for the Hare.
Setting his jaw, the Hare put a knee to the ground and found himself a good grip on the rock, taking a deep breath in, and then moving to stand and raise the stone high.

This time Denbe stood quickly again, but his balance went no sooner than the rock went above his head, and the Hare could only fight to keep it lifted for a moment before it fell. Was this it then? Had he tired himself out already?
With a stern expression, he reminded himself he had not expected to win this particular competition, and took a grip of the stone again. One more try, for his clan.
And yet, the best he managed was just shy of his first attempt at it. Dropping the stone by his feet the Hare panted, and moved himself out of the way. He'd failed, but he still had a good chance, he thought, of being the one to remain.

@ Athletics Competition:
Denbe's Turn:
Ujina Denbe would be one of the next ones to go, viewing the rocks with great scrutiny. Would he allow them to get the better of him? Perhaps, but not without a fight first! He decided to go in with bows blazing, hefting the rock above his head so fiercely, it nearly was thrown straight upwards!
The second stone was his next challenger. Ever the pessimist, there was no way he could topple this one. But, with a surprising show of force, he managed to heft up that one as well, barely able to hold it up before gravity took its toll!
The third stone, heavier than the prior two, would be next. Denbe would manage to lift it skyward, despite his doubts! However, three seconds in, it overwhelmed him and he was forced to release it, before it dropped on his skull. He would give it another try, but his muscles were already screaming, turning traitor against his body. His third attempt almost succeeded through sheer force of will, but he was not able to hold the stone long enough before releasing it, exhausted.
FEATS OF STRENGTH SCOREBOARD Yoritomo Susumu 4th stone, 23 on 5th Horiuchi Sayoko 4th stone, 22 on 5th Bayushi Kojiro 3rd stone, 11 on 4th Ujina Denbe 2nd stone, 14 on 3rd Kakita Zanzen 2nd stone, 5 on 3rd

@ Athletics Competition:
Sosuke's Turn:
Isawa Sosuke, who was looking rather aghast at his chances, would bite the arrow and step up. "I am but a simple yojimbo. Earth Kami, I implore you to be merciful," he would address the rocks, bowing deeply to them. Then, he would give the first stone his best attempt. {14 vs TN 5!}
The little one would be raised and lowered with care. Sosuke would then move to the next stone, and whisper something to himself. He would give it his best attempt to lift, but his footing was all wrong and couldn't get it appropriately elevated. {7 vs TN 10!}
He would inhale deeply before exhaling slowly, then he would give it another shot. Slowly, shakily, he would raise it, bringing it over his head. He would breath rapidly as he did his best to focus on holding it there, then he would slowly return it to the earth, like the last. {17 vs TN 10!}
Next, the third rock, which had given so many others trouble before him. If he could just overcome it, he could advance further. Adjusting his fingers around the base, he would dig them under and give it his best shot. His muscles would tighten and quake as he lifted... higher... higher... and to Zanzen's chagrin, would hold it over his head, suspending it there for the full duration! {17 vs TN 15!}
He would too lower this one, struggling to not drop it and upset the kami. Once he would get to the fourth stone, he would take in several long breaths to recenter himself. Then, he would give this one a good attempt... despite not even lifting it from the ground. {9 vs TN 20!}
"It is alright. I understand. I'd expect the earth to be unyielding," he told the fourth stone, as he would then attempt to lift it again. Once more, he failed to even get it off the ground. {7 vs TN 20!}
One last chance to use his sheer willpower, and struggled with all his might! But like the last two attempts, he couldn't even budge it at all. {8 vs TN 20!}
FEATS OF STRENGTH SCOREBOARD Yoritomo Susumu 4th stone, 23 on 5th Horiuchi Sayoko 4th stone, 22 on 5th Bayushi Kojiro 3rd stone, 11 on 4th Isawa Sosuke 3rd stone, 9 on 4th Ujina Denbe 2nd stone, 14 on 3rd Kakita Zanzen 2nd stone, 5 on 3rd
"That is enough, Sosuke. You have done admirably," Raicho would say, stepping in. She would view all the samurai, some were more tired out than others. "Skill with a blade can be respected. But skill alone sometimes might not be enough. A lesson Kakita Zanzen has learned this day."
She would give a nod to the Crane, excusing him. And a lot less harshly than she had some of the other competitors, at that.
KAKITA ZANZEN HAS BEEN ELIMINATED!
She would then gesture with a finger towards Susumu. "You have finally proven your worth, Yoritomo Susumu. Come, choose your event."

@ Athletics Competition:
After a very brief conversation, a very pleased Susumu would follow Raicho back. "It seems for this event, we're going to have to go for a little stroll. Come with me." Raicho would turn around and begin to walk to the eastern gate of the Training Grounds. Were you going for another run?
The magistrate would continue leading the group of 5 samurai further and further away from the compound, though with no clear destination. Susumu would be grinning the whole way, however. Sayoko didn't seem to have a reaction, though she didn't seem oblivious either. Denbe probably knew where this was going as well.
Soon, you all would be standing upon a cliff, overlooking the ocean, its waves crashing against the rocky shore about 100 feet below. There was a beach not very far away at all, if the group decided to go downhill and around the cliff instead.
"As many of you have suspected, I am friends with the other two magistrates running this competition. One of then, Seppun Benjiro, really enjoys fish. As such, I have promised him that I would bring him a fish. I didn't specify the kind of fish, since I'm not an expert on the matter. But, I would still prefer it to be a nice fish."
Raicho would gesture towards the ocean below. "Yoritomo Susumu has chosen the Swimming Competition next. Success will be measured by the quality of the fish you all bring back. I will be determining this by the size and weight of the fish you bring back. I'll meet you on the beach down below. Be sure not to kill yourselves on the fall!" Raicho would give a polite wave, before heading back down the cliff.
Quote: Swimming. There will be five TNs: 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25. Rolls will be made in this order: Diving from the cliff safely (Agility/Athletics [Swimming]); Swimming out a suitable distance to find a good fish (Stamina/Athletics [Swimming]); locating a suitable fish to be caught (Perception/Athletics [Swimming]); managing to capture said suitable fish (Reflexes/Athletics [Swimming]); and swimming back to shore with the fish in tow (Strength/Athletics [Swimming]). You may assign any of the TNs you want to these rolls, but only once each. Raising on a roll will grant a free raise to the ensuing roll, on a 1-for-1 basis. But if you fail the ensuing roll, you lose the free raises you just earned. Raises and Free Raises can also be spent to increase the quality of fish caught (except for the final roll). There will also be penalties for any failed rolls: Diving = Take wounds equal to the difference between your TN and the result of your roll (possibly applying wound penalties for the rest of the event). Swimming Out = You don't swim out quite so far, and the quality of the fish goes down by one rank for every 5 you fail the TN by. Fishing Spotting = Failure means the quality of the fish you can find goes down by one rank for every 5 you fail the TN by, OR you can attempt a reroll at TN+5 (this can be chosen multiple times). When a fish is captured, the TN resets. Fish Wrangling = Failure means the fish got away. Go back to Fish Spotting, and choose the reroll option. Fish Capturing = The fish manages to get away from you! You must Swim Out once again, at TN+5 and start the process over. This lasts until you come back with a fish. Choose your TNs on your first post.
