Name: A’zota Age: 33 Turns Nameday: 3542:11:08 Sex: Male Sexual Orientation: Struggling in a long-distance relationship with sleep. Weyr: High Reaches Rider Rank: Assistant Weyrlingmaster Previous Rank/Craft: N/A Physical Description: A’zota is most recognizable by his absolutely exhausted appearance. Standing at 6 feet, he is lean and wiry with muscle. He has pale skin and notable bags around his eyes, giving him a permanently tired expression. His dark hair falls past his shoulders, and when paired with the rough stubble around his face, well. A’zota looks permanently unkempt and like he just rolled out of bed.
Personality: Upon first meeting A’zota, one will get the feeling that he really doesn’t care about them. This also happens to be true. He is an apathetic man at his core, moved by logic rather than emotion. He sees no reason to filter himself for the sake of others, and will say what’s on his mind, regardless of so-called status in the Weyr. He is a dragonrider, and any that seek to dismiss him because her hide is green will be eyed with contempt. Color does not matter to him, nor does one’s social upbringing. He will treat everyone the same, though naturally those who have proved themselves may earn more of his respect.
Intelligent and focused, A’zota saw it only natural to offer his assistance training the new blood of the Weyr. High Reaches was the only Weyr that thought to continuously prepare against an enemy long vanquished, and though he may find the rigidity of its structure to be outdated, their methods are tried and true. A’zota’s manner of teaching is strict, and he does not hide the fact that his students likely will not all survive. He will do his damnedest to ensure they get through training, but he is always there to remind them that they are soldiers, and learning to fly and go Between should not be underestimated. They must be dedicated, and they must be focused. It’s his job to ensure that they realize this. Despite his cold demeanor, A’zota does care for his students. In fact, they are likely the only few that will be able to rouse some dry humor out of him. If he is harsh with them, it is due to the fact that he knows life will be just as unkind--it’s best to prepare them now, while they still have some semblance of a safety net.
A’zota is equally harsh with himself. He knows his limits, and he often pushes past them. He doesn’t ever go past the point where he would endanger himself or another, and has found how to straddle that line. He’s naturally an insomniac, and occasionally runs on very little sleep. The need to eat will also occasionally be pushed aside so that he can focus on the tasks at hand. Everyone is expendable, and A’zota has no grand thoughts that he is somehow above that. He knows how much he can handle, therefore, he tends to put important tasks above his own needs and wants.
His natural loner tendencies paired with his tendency to overwork himself means that A’zota has little social life. He knows people but has few, if any friends. This doesn’t bother him. He has his dragon, who is the only creature in his life who he truly loves.
Positive Trait List Even-handed, intelligent, focused. Negative Trait List Harsh, realist, puts himself last. History: No one exactly knows where A’zota came from, and he refuses to talk about it. As a young boy in his teens, he managed to make his way to High Reaches Weyr, and after speaking quietly with the Candidatemaster, it was decided that he would be permitted to participate as a Candidate. The boy worked diligently, but kept to himself. He could work with others as needed, but if he had an option, he was usually off on his own. Due to insomnia and other unspoken night terrors, he never slept well, and would often find a way to keep himself preoccupied in the barracks during long, sleepless nights.
A few Turns passed until the fateful day that his lifemate spilled from her shell. The dark green shook herself fastidiously before turning her eyes onto the gathered boys and girls. She did not rush, but she certainly didn’t dawdle either. She knew who was for her, ignoring all but the pale, exhausted boy hiding somewhere in the back. A’zota. You are tired and hungry. Your Eriath is here to fix that now.
His whole life changed from that moment onwards. He had found his truest friend--and a mother of sorts--and he was utterly smitten with her. Some might have been disappointed to realize they would only ever be a greenrider, but that never bothered A’zota. He did as he was told and worked hard, training against an enemy that others whispered had been wiped out completely.
When he was about 30 Turns, A’zota requested to assist training new Weyrlings. It irritated him that so many of them grew up only to leave the Weyr, that having a dragon was little more than a status symbol now. One Turn later, Thread returned. Though better prepared than anyone else, High Reaches still suffered casualties--a fact that A’zota is grimly unsurprised by. Perhaps now people will take them seriously… and maybe, he can save more Weyrlings in the future by drilling them harder than ever before.
