Saimwen was horrified by what he had just observed. He was just thinking about what a nice time he'd had speaking with the Demon's egg, how they seemed to have gotten along well, when suddenly a Candidate was on the ground and the dragonet was ripping at his body. But worst of all - that Candidate was Marinel's brother. Marinel was right next to him. Saimwen screamed shrilly, "Marinel!" He sprinted as fast as he could across the Sands, pushing through the unsuspecting crowd. When he got there, someone else had already pulled Marinel away, but it didn't stop Saimwen from grabbing an arm of his, looking into his eyes to make sure he was okay. Was he okay?

        Thaliawen

        ---

Laelia was glad to see Haizea, and she couldn't help but grin, face a little flushed, when her new friend bumped against her hip. "So far, it's going great, I think," she said, even though nobody had Impressed yet, but then again, nobody had been mauled yet. But Laelia had spoken too soon - the words had barely left her mouth when the Demon attacked the other Candidate - causing Laelia to gasp and shrink away. It wasn't the first time she'd seen a mauling - it wasn't her first Hatching, after all. But it never made it less horrifying.

She made her eyes turn elsewhere, away from the bloodshed. She grabbed Haizea's wrist, for comfort more than anything, and fixated on the green that was now sniffing at boys, looking for hers to Impress. Hopefully this one would be a calmer Dragonet. The less bloodshed, the better.

        ---

Dharzol was glad for Rasthell's hand, something he might have regretted otherwise, only a second later, when the mauling began. His heart rate sped up, and he instinctively stepped a bit in front of Rasthell, drawing them closer. He would not lose another one to the blind violence of a Hatchling, not another he loved. Stay away, stay away, he thought, fixating on the Bronze, turning his head back to Rasthell and giving him a feeble smile. "It never ceases to shake you up," he said, and he realized his voice was shaking as well. Thankfully, they were far away enough from the action to be safe. For now, at least.

Danzik and Green Eosphoth
Danzik herself had no interest in owning a Firelizard, so while C’yx’s received a vaguely interested look, it ended about there. She didn't even comment on what it was doing to his hair. “There are things that come out of coming out to such things. I hope you find something worth it.” her tone was genuine, but she cut off briefly as a surge of concern rose from the green behind her.

A mauling? Danzik’s attention turned back to the sands immediately, seeking out the form of her son - who thank Faranth was okay and had also the initiative to protect his fellow candidates. She'd have to thank her father again for doing right by her son.

Eosphoth creeled anxiously against Iriseth at the sight. If only he knew there was no need! Yet somehow she knew he did.

Shalaera

Laena continued to croon with delight as she received her desired pets, beginning to knead her feet into L’ex’s skirt.

“I have a bet on a candidate named Rinis but they bet they'd impress a green so that would void our bet if that happens.”

Vimiath

No, daughter, I am not lost, Vimiath replied. Just a little… uncertain. But do not worry about me. This is your moment, my darling. She embraced the Siren with all the warm and loving thoughts she could muster, then pensively watched her go off toward her future.

Farinalgo (HR)

Welp, this was not the way he’d hoped his first hatch would go. Farin watched with a dropped jaw as the bronze hatchling lit into a young man, shredding with clear intent to harm. Not enjoyable for anyone at all – at least, he hoped no one was enjoying this gruesome show! He would be certain to keep his distance from all of the hatchlings, now, no matter how harmless they appeared to be.

Joshala (W)

And there was the first mauling. She’d seen several in the few turns she’d Stood, but Joshie still had to look away. She hated violence, hated seeing others hurt. Even if they seemed to deserve it. What little of Dolmar she knew didn’t indicate that he was any worse than anyone else. It was just the luck of it, unfortunately.

She focused on the green, keeping her thoughts warm and calm in case the second infant should notice her. No sense in upsetting another hatchling.

Nebbi

Thank you! Nebbi thought back, straightening up a little. Dragons could hear peoples thoughts back, right? She grinned to herself. Your rider's a sweetie, even if he doesn't show it. she added with a giggle. Would you tell him thank you for last time?

Okay.. Things were going okay. When the bronze went off to inspect several candidates, Nebbi turned her attention to the rocking Siren egg, smiling. That one wasn't so bad. She'd liked it in the touching okay. The bronze already on the sands was a shock, but as she watched the little green shake and shudder her way out of her egg, her uncertain expression began to fade as she remembered how awesome and cool watching a hatching was (even if this time it was from this side of the sands). Soon, a big grin replaced her previous expression. These were baby dragons! Being born! Right now.

Then, everything came (literally) screaming to a halt.

A shudder ran through her. It was everything she'd been having nightmares about since the touching and more. Without meaning to, she grabbed onto the arm of the nearest adult person. Who happened to be A'ral. Not her candidate master, though she'd gotten to know him a little over the last few days staying here at Western. Right now though, he was just a convenient person who didn't happen to be one of her peers (cause that would be way too embarrassing). She was suddenly hoping that her dad hadn't arrived yet from High Reaches. She didn't want him to have to watch her die.

Ryala

~Kiana_Nala~

The Demon continued its laughter as it ripped and tore into the boy. He chomped down as hard as he could before shifting his head to try a different angle. Maybe somewhere softer. Perhaps the neck or the shoulder? His eyes were still whirling a bright blue when Ladellan and Miach suddenly jumped into the fray, and he ripped his head up from where he'd been tearing into Dolmar in offense. His claws dug all the deeper, as his joy turned into irritation.

How DARE they! Well. If this was what they wanted...

Bellowing, he bunched up atop Dolmar with all his weight, as if he were preparing to pounce... and when he did, he made sure his claws left the boy blody beneath him. Instead of attacking either Miach or Ladellan, he instead turned to one nearby, standing dumbstruck and stupid. Gavryl. Wings outspread, he went to tackle the other, to shake, to maul, to brutalize just as he had Dolmar. He latched on with his wings foreclaw, and bit down hard, shaking, and ripping like the boy was but a herd beast.

Now what would the heroes try to do?

Waiver
Have fun! This bronze isn't holding back.

Jagmund

By Faranth's egg, what are you doing, bronze? Jagmund thought, taking a step back despite himself. For a dragonet who seemed so intelligent and knowing, this was brutal and unthinking!

He kept his distance, not willing to play hero... yet. Wouldn't the dragonet Impress soon and stop this behaviour? If not, Jagmund would jump in and start dragging the... victims... off to the side so that no healers wouldn't have even the smallest chance of getting too close. It was the least he could do, right? He swallowed hard and clenched his hands into fists. He had to be ready to move.

Bright Faranth, the chaos unfolding on the sands. Migel had left to attempt a rescue, but it was clear from Cesare's vantage point that nothing short of a miracle would save any in the Demon's path. Unless of course they happened to be fortunate enough to be saddled to this... beast. But who would want such a ravening monster? When he'd touched the egg, he'd gotten the impression of a clever mind. Something a little more substantial that this... berserk fury. If the hatchling was angry, anyway. It seemed more as though it were playing. In a truly dark moment, he could not help but think better them than me.

Except that Migel had gone right into the midst of that. And he wasn't keen on finding him in pieces. Dolmar had played the part of chew toy. Gavryl seemed to be next. Where was it heading, and how could he best avoid it? He was by no means a coward, but he had plans, and places to be. None of his plans included dying beneath a hatchling's claws.

--

A'ral was none too sure about Vimiath suddenly appearing nearby. He knew that Akaris was not ready to see her, not so close at hand. What was the dragon about? Caught between pity and a perhaps misguided anger, the Candidatemaster simply clutched the hands of the girls who hid behind him, staring balefully out across the sands. Was he going to be watching one of his children die tonight? Faranth. Nebbi wasn't one of his, but she was frightened, and small, and that made him just that much more protective. "You're safe. Promise. Just stay calm."

Farensil's glassy eyes held on the bronze, until finally, her mental faculties began to reboot, and she shook her head. "Give the dragonet space. Back away and don't get involved unless you want to join the bloodbath!" she warned them, having shook her shutdown off. ~Calm, little bronze. Callm. You are hurting them. Do you want to hurt them? We only wish to love and adore you.~ She thought softly, knowing that this wasn't really something that could be helped. Maulings happened... they weren't often intentional, but they happened, and Farensil was deciding the standard rules of engagement applied to this one, as well.

Candidate Gavryl
The choice to stay put did not, unfortunately, pay off as the bronze ball of fury leaped at him and the first needle-like teeth and claws tore bore him to the ground, Gavryl's eyes went wide as a lurching yell flew from his throat.

The first instinct was to struggle, fight back, but as adrenaline peaked and his emotions fled, Gavryl's mind raced for a heartbeat or two, one arm raised to protect his throat, one knee as he rolled, before he seemed to go utterly, completely limp. His eyes closed, his breath stilled, and event he grimace on his face from the pain went slack.

Holding his breath, pain lancing through him, Gavryl approximated death pretty well. He didn't know why the dragonet was trying to kill him, but he would be less interesting if he seemed dead – and, for most, it looked as if he were. He'd only managed to fall so his belly wouldn't be torn out but, for better or worse, he was completely at the dragonet's mercy.

The one thing he could not do was quiet his mind. Tactics, runs of logic... they coursed through the odd stillness that was shock as he tried to understand why. Had their exchange at the Touching been so offensive? Was mauling like this necessary? If the purpose was to kill... a torn throat, a chewed artery... there were a number of quicker, no less showy, ways to achieve that. This was something more than just murder.

Then it donned on him... he was being murdered.

His mind went blank with the shock of that thought.

The Angel egg rattled. It wanted to act, and act now! Matters were swiftly spiraling out of claw, and its hated brother was up to no good! The egg shook, but did not hatch.

Jarah

The teen had gotten distracted bickering with his sister, but he eventually shook her off and made his way over to Marinel and Dolmar. Unfortunately, so had the bronze dragonet that beat the candidates onto the sands. The baby dragon attacked Dolmar, but before Jarah could reach his boyfriend others had pulled him from the scene. "Mari!" He laid his hand on Mari's shoulder instead, squeezing comfortingly. He could only hope that the dragonet stopped before he killed Mari's twin.

Thaliawen
Mari has lots of friends x3

Xibora

Xibby grumbled as her brother walked away, but she pushed he way toward the front of the sands though she was headed in the opposite direction of all the noise. She hadn't looked, didn't know there was a candidate's blood on the heated sands. She would hear about it later and regret not being there to help. Instead, she was focused on the other dragonet on the sands, a green. "So pretty," she murmured. Xibora would like a green, like her mother's Anath, but if she were not the pretty green's rider she would simply be happy if the dragonet were Impressed.

Cheora

Cheora gasped as the first dragonet hatched mauled a Candidate. She'd seen it before but always hoped that it wouldn't happen again. She sniffled, unable to look away, as her flits tried to comfort her. "He'll be okay, right?" she asked the pair, but their crooning response didn't make her feel better at all.

Making up her mind, Che shook her flits off and ordered them to stay out of the way. She might be a dragonhealer, but she could at least assist the main healers and hopefully save the lives of these kids who were getting mauled. She strode across the stands until she was above the healing area and waved to the nearest healer. "Hey! Can I help? I'm a journeyman healer!"

Ladellan

Oh, just great. Now the beast seemed intent on going after an innocent... just to spite Miach and himself, if he wasn't mistaken!

There was only one thing he could do.

"Stay with Dolmar!" Del shouted to the High Reaches girl, as he moved away from all of the other candidates.

Deliberately heading towards the other eggs, Ladellan kept his eyes on the bronze. "Hey, come on!" He shouted. "No one else needs to be hurt here. I made you mad? Then come get me!" He knew it was a risk, that the bronze would almost certainly end his existence... but was that not the same risk that dragons and riders faced in every Threadfall? How could he not make an effort to do all he could to help, even if it cost him everything?

Masterharper
Please let him live...

Aislin

Barely started, and the hatching was already a wreck. After the Touching, she really shouldn't be surprised. Aisling was smart enough not to interfere with the candidate when he was attacked by the young bronze. And rightly so, it seemed.. As though who did soon invited his wrath as well. But that did at least give a window now to get to the first victim. She was no hero, but she was a healer, and she'd never let anything stand between her and a patient before.

She dropped onto the hot sands next to Dolmar. "If you're conscious, say something." she said, pressing the corner of her robe against one of the more profusely bleeding cuts. With the amount of blood he was losing, she had to make sure he wasn't going into hypovolemic shock. Hopefully another healer would arrive soon.

Dolmar

At some point or other the pain of so many bites and claws had not so much faded as mingled into an all-encompassing agony. He’d gone as limp as he could, riding the cresting waves of ripping until hopefully the Demon left off. The feel of someone trying to drag him away revived him somewhat—just in time for those jaws to come crunching back in, and he effectively found himself bellowing down the dragon’s throat as he felt his skull squeeze and flex against the hatchling’s teeth. He’d been called hard-headed before, but never was he so glad of that when his cranium somehow did not give way. Not that anyone watching would be able to tell—his head was entirely red, laced with torn streaks and jagged rips.

He did feel something crack inside when the hatchling bunched itself and leapt. A few more scratches were nothing, but the combined weight of the creature atop his chest and then the force of it launching away—left collarbone and at least one rib had paid the price, the blinding pain launching past even that of his previous injuries, leaving Dolmar insensate and gasping as he was finally granted a reprieve from the monster he had dared to lust after. At least he’d seen past the snapping jaws that Migel had pulled Marinel away. That was good.

He really didn’t want his twin to have his brother die a second time, and especially not right in front of him.

Though really he’d thought dying would hurt less. And a moment later he realized he wasn’t dying. Just bleeding, and trying to remember how to breath, as the pain left him limp on the sands, mired in crusty red mess. Someone bent over him and he nodded. “...Is Marinel...alright?” He wheezed. He could hear more violence...please, just not Marinel.

The dragon had moved off Dolly and Shahera wanted to go get him out of there. But she was a. tiny, b. going to be killed by Dolly if she let go of Marinel and something happened to the boy, and c. pretty sure she would be in the way now.

Her hands tightened a little on Marinel’s arm. “People are helping. Don’t worry. He will live. Stay put. Dolly would never forgive himself if something happened to you.” She couldn’t say that he would be fine yet. That remained to be seen.
