Haelwen & Sthenoth

-Traits-
Distraction/Intensity: 4 (this girl is a master at focusing on her goals, look where it got her!)
Exhaustion/Alertness: 2 (a little restless sleep from stressing about these lessons but she's alright)
Memorization/Visualization: 5 (all those years studying currents and star charts has paid off!)
Anxiety/Confidence: 4 (she is aware of the risks and cautious, but she knows she has the skills necessary to be successful)
Slacker/Studious: 5 (when she decides she likes something she puts all her effort into it, she's probably been studying at every available moment since before she even Impressed)

Grid 2 - Moderate Difficulty Level

2. Radharc Hold (Minor Hold in Tillek)
3. Keogh Hold (Minor Hold in Nabol)
4. Balen Hold (Minor Hold in High Reaches)
5. High Reaches Weyr

The leap Between was taking too long. It was cold and dark and Haelwen fought to stay calm, unwilling to cause distress to Sthenoth that might cause them to go off course and become lost forever. She focused on her breathing, and the beating hearts of her bonded and she focused also on their destination. Perhaps she'd been too confident, too sure of herself, especially since they hadn't visited this particular Hold more than a handful of times. Just as she was beginning to think that they might be stuck Between it was suddenly bright, blinding after so long in the darkness, and she clutched Sthenoth's neck fighting tears. "You beautiful, magnificent, wonderful, amazing dragon! We made it!" she cried as she took in the surroundings.

Sthenoth's eyes whirled blue and yellow, she too had been afraid they wouldn't make it back out but as she touched down for a landing she craned her neck to nuzzle her rider and huffed out gently, ruffling her hair. We made it. Because we are together. We are a team. We will always make it as long as we remember that.

Both the young woman and her dragon stayed grounded for a little bit, recovering from their scare. Haelwen chatted with the assistant about what she could have done differently in an effort to ensure it would never happen again and Sthenoth sent calming waves of reassurance to her rider. The young dragon was quite confident that hers would never steer them wrong, that's why she'd chosen her, after all.

I don't know Sthenoth I just... something... I think something is off... Haelwen fretted as her dragon readied for another jump. The woman was reluctant to provide any info for her partner to go off of despite the urging the dragon was doing. Let's get on with it Haelwenmine. We've been to Balen before. Let's just go and then we can go home for a bit before the next round.

Even though Sthenoth was quite willful Haelwen put a stop to her insistence. "No... I don't feel good about this... we're getting the info checked." she stated as she dismounted and approached the assistant on hand. She relayed the info she would have been providing to Sthenoth only to find out her coordinates were, in fact, transposed. She heaved a sigh of relief as she returned to Sthenoth with the proper coordinates in mind. "See? Even if they dock us some points at least we aren't going to become another pair lost Between." She mounted up again, and provided the information Sthenoth needed to make the jump. After a brief time spent chilled Between the pair arrived, no worse for wear, above Balen Hold.

Haelwen is quite sure she's got the rest of this lesson under control. How hard could it be to get home? She provides the information to Sthenoth for the jump and they are Between and back again before she can even feel the cold prickling her skin.

She is immediately hit with a wave of anxiety as Sthenoth's eyes whirl yellow and white and the normally composed dragon bugles in alarm. This is wrong. Wrong. We must go home. Now. Try again Haelwenmine. Again. Quickly. The young dragon demands through their bond and the woman does her best to fulfill the request, again picturing the spindles of High Reaches Weyr and the pair snaps Between once again before emerging, this time they see V'res and Tagtarth waiting below and Sthenoth is quick to land beside the older dragon while both she and her rider seek comfort and reassurance from the more experienced pair. Maybe a bit more practice wouldn't be such a bad idea after all.

Zamistia and Brown Nanuth

Zamistia was feeling a bit tired today, because she had been studying their charts that night. As they got to where their class was gathered, she listened with everyone else as they were told that they would be doing their jumps between all by themselves today. Her stomach was in knots, oh she did not like this one bit. As much as Nanuth had helped her confidence, she knew this was dangerous. It was one thing when they had help, doing it alone was a whole other matter.

My light, you made sure to check all the locations last night. Plus, you paid attention to every jump we have done, you have got this. We can handle it,Nanuth thought to his rider as she climbed up into her spot.

If you say so, Nanuth, the red headed girl thought to her dragon gently. She had Nanuth send a good luck to all of their friends, before receiving their first place they needed to go. Alright, Weavercraft Hall was first, so she pictured the place in her mind. She made sure to give exact coordinates to Nanuth, made it into the air and blinked into the cold of between. When the familiar look of the Hold met her gaze, a soft sigh of relief came from under her gear.

See, we can do this,Nanuth pointed out, flying over the place.

Grid 2 - Moderate Difficulty Level

2. Radharc Hold (Minor Hold in Tillek)

3. 2-4: Success & Failure! If this is your first roll and you have a 1 in any of the levels, you fail. Whatever the reason, you find yourself in a world of trouble, as the black void of Between embraces its newest victim... But maybe you felt a need to get those coordinates checked before you took the leap. Thankfully, no ones

If this is your second or third roll, if your Exhaustion Level of 3 or higher is going to be reduced by one for the rest of your rolls. i.e. If you had them down as a 5, they are now feeling like a 4. All future rolls will be based on this number until you finish the game. If you had them as a 4, they are now down to a 3, and if you had them as a 3 they are now down to a 2. You are feeling mentally exhausted!

If this is your fourth or fifth roll, and you happen to have a Distraction/Intensity level of 5, your certainty of the coordinates winds up being your downfall. You didn't account for the placement of the sun and you wind up lost Between. If you have an exhaustion level of 1 or 2, you botch your coordinates due to the drain. If your Memorization/Visualization skills are 3 or less, you botch remembering the exact placement and wind up lost--unless you check your coordinates.

Zamistia and Brown Nanuth

Zamistia got the next place in her mind, Radharc Hold, picturing its pentagon shape and rolling farmlands. She gave the coordinates to Nanuth, who made sure to blink between without an issue. After a count of three, they appeared in their destination. It looked right, but something seemed off about it to her.

Mine, I think we need to get back to the Weyr immediately. We are clearly not exactly when we should be,Nanuth thought to his rider, not wanting to freak her out, but knew something had gone wrong. Once she had given him the coordinates for home, he jumped back into between. Thankfully, they make it back to the right place and time, but he can feel Zamistia's anxiety grow more than it had been.

I...I am sorry, Nanuth. I..thought I had everything right, she thought to him, holding tightly to him.

It is alright, Mine, we got back here safely. We will just try to be more careful with this next jump,he assured, wrapping her up in love and confidence.

Maybe you memorized the wrong pages, or maybe you had too much detail and wind up lost in the wrong time. Either way, where you showed up is right, but the WHEN is all wrong! In fact, your dragon starts to panic when they realize that the time and place is... not right!

Too quickly, before you are able to see much of anything worth noting, your dragon begs to return to High Reaches Weyr. You visualize the coordinates, and pop successfully back to the right time and place--thoroughly shaken. Your Anxiety level automatically plummets to a 1 from here on out. Alternatively, you can fail your return and die on the way back to the right time. Your choice! (totally going back lol)

Zamistia and Brown Nanuth

Zamistia was trying her best to keep from letting herself panic, telling herself she could do this. Keogh Hold was their next destination, she knew that was up in the mountains. So taking a calming breath, she pictured the coordinates for her brown once more and felt them pop into between once more. When they came out, she could see it was Radharc, but an edge of worry from Nanuth made her know something was wrong.

You are right, we are not quite right, so we need to head back to the Weyr as quickly as possible,Nanuth thought, his mental voice carrying a note of urgency. He got the coordinates from his red headed rider and headed back to the Weyr once more. And just like before, they got back to the right place and time. He felt his rider clinging to him, knowing this was not helping her anxiety one bit.

Before he could send soothing words to her again, he sensed the death of one of the other Weyrling pairs. It was one of his fellow brown brothers, in fact. It was not a pair either of them knew except in passing, but he was still his brother. However, knowing how badly Misty was feeling, he decided to shield her from this knowledge for now.

Relax, Mine, you are putting too much pressure on yourself. Take a moment to collect yourself, then we will try again,he told her, trying to keep his mental voice steady. He knew she could sense something was wrong, but knew he would tell her when the time was right.

Zamistia and Brown Nanuth

Zamistia had taken her beloved dragon's advice and allowed herself to calm down. They had been doing this long enough, she should be able to manage this. Once she felt ready, she started to think of the thick forests of Balen Hold, their next destination. She sent the coordinates to Nanuth clearly, who popped between, the coldness surrounding them. When they came back out, she saw what she knew was Balen below her. And since Nanuth was not feeling uneasy about it, it must be totally right this time.

See, I told you that you could do it. You just needed a moment to collect your thoughts. Now we just have to get back home,Nanuth thought to his rider warmly. Then he felt as another pair was lost to Between and this time..it was one that he and his rider would know more than just in passing. His eyes greyed and he wanted so much to keen for both losses. However, he new his red headed light needed to concentrate and knew this would break her. While she would be saddened by K'ell and Eskharath, Cavera and Aviforth would be too much for her.

Nanuth, is something wrong?came Misty's voice lightly in his head. The two had always been completely open with each other, unless it was to protect the other. She could feel him keeping something from her, had she missed something.

I will let you know when we get back home, just focus for now, okay?the brown assured, keeping himself strong for her sake. The deaths of two of his clutch and their riders weighed heavy, but he was determined he and his rider would not make three.

Zamistia and Brown Nanuth

Despite knowing something was up, Zamistia didn't press the matter right now. She knew they still had to make the jump back home safely, so she focused on the mental picture of High Reaches Weyr in her mind. She felt them pop into the cold of Between and after a count of three, found themselves looking at the familiar form of the seven spindles. Maybe it helped having to return twice to get themselves back on track before, but it was so good to get back in one piece. As they touched down on the ground, she let out a sigh of relief.

See, we got back here safely, I knew we could. Though...unfortunately, not everyone did...Nanuth began gently.

Who was lost, Nanuth? Was that why you were upset earlier..did we lose two pairs? R'iz...Shar...Nyara...she started, her mental voice shaking slightly. She had started with the ones closest to them, but they were close to some others..thanks to her efforts.

Those three are fine, least to the best of my knowledge. No, the ones lost..were K'ell and my brother Eskharath. And also...Cavera and cousin Aviforth,Nanuth told his soulmate sorrowfully.

"No, no..it..it can't be! They..they had so much left to live,"came Misty's wail. She slid out of her straps and down off her brown, tears nearly blinding her. She curled up near Nanuth, who finally let out the keens for his lost family that he had been holding. She felt his right wing come up to block her from view, as she sobbed into his side as he laid beside her. Her heart was broken, knowing they had not all made it home safely. Cavera and Aviforth had been such bright lights..and now they were gone. And though she didn't know K'ell or Eskharath well, she had known her fellow brown rider had been through enough and now this.

We will continue to fight for them, just like we do for my green sister who was lost during our hatching,Nanuth assured his light. He could feel her pain mixing with his own. He would keep her safe from people bothering her right now, though, making sure she was tucked safely against him, under his wing.

They had been practicing this for almost two months now. It had terrified him even when they had a senior rider leading them. Now they were doing it for real. On their own. Between. That inconceivable place where nothing existed.

He’d been studying hard and putting everything into memorizing locations. M’ton nervously fiddled with his straps as he listened to V’res. This was it. There was no going back from here. He felt the butterflies flickering in his belly.

A comforting voice wrapped itself around him, do not worry so much M’tonmine. We will be the very best and show everyone. I know you’ve studied harder than anyone here. Zygmuth’s voice beamed with pride for her rider as she hummed encouragingly.

Yes, but if we screw this up, that’s it. It’s over. M’ton tried to impress the seriousness of the moment upon his dragon. He wasn’t sure it reached home as always. Zgymuth offered him her leg for him to mount; he swung up and tightened the straps.

He smiled as he was given their assignment. He knew this route pretty well. It was the one they practiced most often. M'ton breathed a little easier. They should be alright. Right? I told you not to worry! Zygmuth thrummed as she took off to gain the proper altitude for going between.

He patted her shoulder with a smile. Trust his lucky little green. They were going to Fishcraft Hall. He knew it was located near Tillek proper, but along the coast. They'd get the scent of the ocean wafting over them, and sun glinting off a Dolphineer Bell. Zygmuth lifted her head as she hovered. I see it! We go! The now semi-familiar darkness surrounded them. One..... Two..... Three..................

The bright sun and fresh ocean air greeted them. Zygmuth let out a high bugle in triumph. You did it perfectly M'tonmine! He grinned at her enthusiasm. Next was High Reaches Hold.

M'ton pictured High Reaches Hold. Zygmuth hovered as her rider got his bearings. It was further from the coast, but still visible from the air. Most prominent was the Hold's stony face. He fixed that image firmly in his mind. Ready? Always! Came the cheerful reply. With her backing him, how he could fail? Once more cold and black surrounded the pair. They appeared over High Reaches Hold as predicted, and Zygmuth let out another bugle. Are you really doing to do that each time? M'ton asked amused. Yes, was her simple reply.

Next was Nabol Hold. M'ton felt the hold didn't have much going for it honestly. Maybe they saw the beauty of the metal-rich mountains, but he didn't. Most of the hold was inside a mountain. He mostly remembered the peaks that surrounded it. Alright let's go. They arrived as expected, but Zygmuth didn't give off her victory bugle. Instead she came in keening. The sound that meant the loss of a dragon, and probably a rider.

M'ton felt his throat close up. Who? My brother Aviforth. The green replied sadly. Zgymuth circled the hold slowly as M'ton took a moment to compose himself. He didn't want to risk a jump if he wasn't ready. Several long moments passed before he was ready. Where were they going next?

Tillek Hold, Zygmuth supplied helpfully. Right, thanks. M'ton focused hard. Despite this Hold being much further inland, it prominently sported a giant metal anchor upon the top of the Hold. It should be easy enough, but he didn't want to get too over confident. M'ton took an extra moment to double check himself before giving his eager green the go ahead.

They appeared as planned and Zygmuth started her victory bugle. Only it was cut short by another keen. Another? Another had succumbed to the black abyss. Eskharath and His didn't make it back. A couple tears trickled down his cheeks to be dried by the wind of their passage. This was what being a dragonrider was all about.

Let's go home.

Home.

High Reaches Weyr. The looming seven spindles came easily to his mind. How many times had he looked up from the bowl and see them? Or more recently from the back of his beautiful green. He felt confident about this jump. Zygmuth took them between and they soon appeared above the spindles.

M'ton tightened his grip on the straps as he steeled himself against another keen. However, the green let her out victory bugle without mishap. M'ton smiled and patted her shoulder. Well done. Still. They'd lost two and not everyone had finished yet. He directed her down to get their performance rating.
