Post 3/3 for Ninshuu: Observance I
Post 4/4 for Ninshuu: Observance II

The library was getting close to being in good shape, but there was still plenty to do. For the time being, Bast would continue sweeping the floors and picking up debris from the attack. She shuffled around through the corners of the ground floor with her broom, then decided to head upstairs.

The damage on the second floor was slightly greater than the ground floor, but still mostly superficial. A breeze came through the skylight above, stirring pages of fallen books. As she swept up the sand and dust on the floor, she also picked up the tomes she found and put them on a table. By the time she had finished sweeping the floor, she had made a pile of books that was almost as tall as she was. As she ferried the various tomes back to their homes, she remembered the large pile of books and scrolls she had left in the academy. She radioed over to Mononoke to fetch them, waited a few minutes, and then filed them back where they belonged when the golem arrived.

"Hello? Anyone up here? It's me, Community-Minded Woman! I'm here to help!"

Bast strolled around the upper floor as she picked up books. Mononoke followed closely behind her, sweeping up dust, sand, and debris. The woman's voice elicited no response. She called out one or two more times before the floor was finished, then went down to the basement with Mononoke. There, she found a teacher from the academy passed out drunk.

"Get up, you drunk! We've been attacked!"

After shaking the teacher awake, she sent him to the hospital to get sobered up and left him with instructions to help look after the younger children. With little amiss in the basement, the woman would then leave, stopping briefly to use Gunsei on all the piles that had been swept up and Mononoke, repairing the latter with the former.

Bast threw open the doors to the library and strolled in, followed closely by Mononoke and the Princess. The latter of these two carried a large, sturdy wooden coffin of simple design. The coffin was held level, with as much care as possible being taken to ensure its smooth conveyance. Eventually, though, the Princess had to hand off the coffin to Bast and Mononoke. There were no guarantees the building could handle the Princess' weight, so it was dismissed to the household. In the meantime, the coffin was carried into the basement.

Before unsealing the coffin, the humidity needed to go. Bast formed a hand seal and activated the High Air Pressure Technique. After sustaining it for almost a minute, she released it, letting the pressure settle. The humidity in the room had dramatically dropped as a result, giving her some confidence that it was safe to open the coffin. As she started undoing her seals, she had Mononoke go grab every bit of literature pertaining to Ninshuu in the library. There had to be something of use.

The first item on the list was the mysterious box and its contents. Judging by the scratch marks and wear on the wood, it was probably at least a few hundred years old. This was taking into account the relatively well-preserved state of the tomb, but it also served as a probable lower bound. The design was one common for royalty of a few centuries back as well, as confirmed by one of the books Mononoke had found. On the inside of the lid was what appeared to be a name etched into the wood, but it was not composed of characters the woman recognized. In fact, thanks to the wearing of time, she was hardly sure she would have been able to make out what it said even if she knew the characters.

The fan was a curiosity. Of all the tomes that Mononoke had found on the subject matter, there were very few that did not reference fans. There was one in particular that matched the description perfectly, in fact, but it could not possibly be correct. The item in question was one of Rikudou Sennin's Sacred Treasures, the Bashousen. The fan that Bast held in her hand, however, held no traces of power, which had seemingly leaked out to form the orichalcum vein. The genuine article would undoubtedly not be so fragile, and to test this theory, the woman picked up the fan gingerly and swung it. Not so much as a puff of any element manifested, so she wrapped it again in its silk coverings and returned it to the box.

Next to come was the body itself. Just to be certain of its preservation, Bast dimmed the lights and used the High Air Pressure Technique to drive out the moisture again. Following this, she placed a barrier around the room that would prevent any influx of air while she worked. She then donned her breath mask and undid the last seal. This was where things would get a bit dicey: if she was too rough, it was possible the body would suffer damage. To avoid this, she Assimilated the steel of her headband--a nice, nonreactive substance--and turned a few layers of skin on her hand into dust.

The dust worked its way into the coffin without opening it, then coated the body, probing it for irregularities. The fabric of the saint's Haori was exquisite, but incredibly brittle. The corpse definitely belonged to a woman, that was certain, but its identity remained a mystery. Then, underneath the ancient fabrics, she found something much harder than anything else present. It felt like a necklace of magatama, so she asked her assistant about the presence of magatama in the literature. Once again, there were almost too many instances to count, but there was only one set belonging to a sage: a cluster of nine that showcased various magical properties. As quickly and gently as possible, Bast used her dust to remove the necklace from the corpse, raised the coffin lid just enough to let the beads pass, and then shut it again.

The magatama necklace was beautiful, Bast thought. The stones had faded from age, but still bore their brilliant hues proudly. As in the literature, there were nine of them, arranged in symmetrical pairs of dark blue, emerald, amber, and ruby, all about a deep black-green center stone. While the literature had no notes on the significance of the colors themselves, they lined up perfectly with the descriptions of the sage's magatama cluster. There was something strangely familiar about them, though, Bast noted as soon as she started observing them more closely. There was something about their insides that looked just like the core of a variable marble.

"Find me a name," the woman ordered her golem. After nearly an hour of searching through tomes of all sizes, shapes, and ages, the two of them came across a few conflicting pieces of data. There was no conclusive name for the saint in the sarcophagus. Then, an idea struck Bast. She opened the lid of the box and compared the scratchings to the various names present in the literature. One name was ruled out immediately for being about twice as long as there were characters etched into the lid, and of the two remaining, one of them had a character in it that looked nothing like anything present in the etchings. That left her with one name.

"Mitamashiro," she said after a few minutes of silence.

Things had slowed down considerably since the initial whirlwind of discovery. After confirming the identity of the corpse as that of the saint Mitamashiro, there had been little else to discover about the body while maintaining a fair degree of respect. There were just some things that should not be done with religious artifacts, which included dietary analysis. Instead, Bast was now reading through some of the books while Mononoke wrote down their findings. There was very little of interest, unfortunately, at least as far as the saint's work went. She would likely need to consult someone better versed in the religion for those details.

With a sigh, Bast leaned back in her chair. There was really very little she could do from here with regard to the saint. Absentmindedly, she turned to the necklace. Each of the magatama resembled a variable marble, but there was no rhyme or reason to them if they were, and there was no way they could have been made with modern methods. She sighed, then kneaded a small ball of Chakra into her fingertip and discharged it into the center stone. The light faded almost immediately, seemingly confirming her suspicions that this was just a normal--albeit very pretty--stone.

Things got odd, though, when she tried this on another stone. That one held the charge for quite a while, albeit with no visible effect. Then she tried charging another and another, and they held the charge too. She let the Chakra dissipate for a while, then systematically prodded the magatama, starting at one end and moving to the other. The first one poured out water. That did a pretty solid job of confirming that it was a variable marble. The second rejected her Chakra entirely, similar to one of the many medical marbles she had interacted with over the course of her life. After comparing it to a catalog of ones she had seen, she placed it as a Diagnosis marble. While she did not have the ability to confirm without a doubt, she was fairly certain that was the case. The next one had no noticeable effect to her, but it caused the table to creak. The next one did the same, while the next one lessened the burden, placing that one as a reduction marble. The next one she tried made the table creak, the one after that made them bow, and the final one formed a thick mist in the air. Based on this and a few other experiments she performed--primarily consisting of activating some of the less certain ones in conjunction with some of the more obvious marbles--she managed to pin down the properties with a high degree of certainty, except for the one that did not showcase any effects. Notably, the effects were much greater than normal, and could be measured on the scale of Shinobi Ninjutsu. She marked this down, sealed the necklace with the corpse in a few layers of barriers, and then posted Mononoke to keep watch and clean up the water. From there, she left and headed to the Kazekage's Office, carrying with her a package that had come with Masahiro's note.

The Bast clone approached the library with the Princess, informed Mononoke of the situation, and left the former outside while heading down to the basement with the latter. After breaking through the various seals in place around the basement, she placed a barrier around the body and carried it upstairs with Mononoke. Once outside, she had the Princess take over carrying it and had Mononoke transport the magatama necklace back to her house, to hide it in the warehouse until repairs were complete and a proper display case could be made for it. As soon as the golems were on their way, the clone dispersed.

«I»t didn't take long for Saqr to make his way through the city and to the third largest building in the village. It easily towered above the many sand colored domiciles and shops around, only really being put to shame by the Kazekage's Office in the center. Inside, knoweldge beyond measure and today, that's exactly what he was looking for. He pushed past a civilian standing in the way, not apologizing in the slightest as the man turned and shouted. Saqr only made his way inside, before he stopped on his way up the first flight of stairs. He found a guard who was leaning casually against the railing, looking like he was on break.

"Where are historical records located." Saqr's voice was a low rumble with a slight accent to it. Brusk and without any hint of companionship, he brought the full weight of his stare onto the guard that he stopped in front of. Bringing his right hand up, he rested it on the shoulder of the man in front of him. He wanted to convey the significance of his question and preferred not to have to answer any of his own. Saqr was hoping to take advantage of the situation and put himself in a dominant position, forcing an easy answer out of the man.

"Uh..." The guard began, scratching his head for a moment. He was just here to protect the damn place, not be a host. "Third floor, yeah. That's right." He nodded in a reassuring manner, still leaning against the balcony. "Why, what are you-" The man began but by the time he was halfway through his sentence, Saqr had already walked away.

Leaving the man in the dust, blabbering to himself like a child, Saqr climbed the rest of the first floor staircase and made his way towards the second landing. All the while, he cursed himself for almost getting dragged into a conversation. That was the last thing he wanted while hunting a single tome of knowledge in a library the size of a temple.

«S»aqr, quickly reaching the second landing, continued up the stairs to the third floor. As he did so, both the humidity and the heat increased. By the time he reached the landing to the third floor, it was near the upper eighties and you could cut the air with a kunai it was so thick. He could hear fans shopping at the air above him and felt the air currents dancing across his eyes, the only open skin on his body. He looked through the ambient mix of colors the stained glass ceiling cast upon the room and found it the most obnoxious thing in the world. How was one to read with this light?

He sulked into the room and immediately began browsing the shelves for what he needed. He had heard rumors recently about a style of combat that involved the one thing he knew how to use effectively as a salt farmer, gloves. He knew he wouldn't be able to learn it straight from a scroll, or at least, he didn't think so. Instead, he was searching for historical records of shinobi over the ages who had born the title of Nagirikobushi no Shintou Apprentice. If he was lucky, he'd find someone in the village that he would hunt down and question thoroughly.

"So many damn books," he whispered to himself idly. His hands pulled scroll after scroll from the shelf and his eyes scanned the many titles. Towering Halls: A History of Sand, This isn't is: Keep On Reading On, Sand: The color of Blood, and more passed through his hands. He finished searching the first shelf and came up with nothing. He scanned the room and saw at least a hundred shelves.

"No way I'm doing this." he said out loud. His hands came together and a few seals flashed before him. When they resolved, he felt the pull of chakra from his body and the strange sizzling separation that came with creating clones.

"Bushin no Jutsu." The words were dry and died in the air the moment they left his mouth. Still, three clones appeared beside him, perfect in appearance. They were only images, but they could read the titles of the shelves just as well as he could. They didn't need his words to know what to do next, they were him. The three of them set off in opposite directions to the corners of the room while Saqr himself stayed in his corner and moved to the next shelf. It still would take longer than he hoped, but it was now a much more manageable task. They continued their search.

«F»our shelves over and across the room, one of the clones waved the others towards him. They gathered in a tight circle as Saqr approached and grabbed the scroll the clone was pointing towards. He brought it off the shelf and at the same time, spoke a hand sing out loud, releasing the clones with a simple Kai.

He opened the scroll and began reading it over. It was a list compiled by a local writer studying the different styles of Taijutsu that were taking root in Sunagakure. Although it was pretty aggressive towards outside styles, it did speak on a few major people who bore styles not adhering to Suna's Pai Qua Quan. It was a very interesting scroll but it held no information at all about what he needed. He didn't think another search would yield much more. He replaced the scroll and sat down at one of the tables near the center of the floor, below a fan whipping the air around and cooling him slightly.

"What next," he pondered, steepling his fingers and staring straight ahead at nothing.

«I»t didn't take long for Saqr to realize what his next action must be. He pushed back his chair and stood up, turning and heading down the stairs. If he needed to learn information, he'd go to the most knowledgeable shinobi in the village. In the meantime, he could grab his headband as well. He descended the three flights, cooling down as he dropped each level, and entered into the harsh desert conditions of the town.

«I»t didn't take long for Saqr to reach this library with his mission in mind. Shaking the dust from his clothes before entering the building, he remained on the first floor this time around. Instead of checking historical records, he might as well check if there were any scrolls covering the basics of the technique. After a finite amount of searching, he found exactly what he was looking for. Pocketing the scroll that would help unlock the secrets of the Clenched first, he left for the huge dome that served as a training grounds for the village.

«A»fter arriving off the street, Saqr shook himself out thoroughly to ensure the wild sand wouldn't reach the many volumes in the library. He felt the change in heat immediately and inhaled deeply, closing his eyes. Taking a few seconds to himself, he reached into his pocket and removed the recent scroll. He opened his eyes and walked back to the shelf he originally removed it from, having successfully recovered the location from his memory.

In a nearby section, he discovered the continued techniques of the cesturn-based bukijutsu style he was favoring. He removed that scroll, a couple of basic scrolls that covered soft and hard physical combat, and a scroll that had the basics that most Suna shinobi acquired at some times: Pai Qua Quan.

He shoved the four scrolls into his pocket and turned the leave from the first floor of the building. His pockets bulged from the scrolls shoved within and, before leaving through the doors, he checked all his clothes to make sure he was fully covered. As always, only his eyes stared mockingly from a slit in the blue cloth. He pushed open the door when he finished his inspection and moved out into the windy, sand-swept streets.

«E»merging through the doors of the library in a swirl of dust, Saqr quickly made his way back to the shelves where he'd collected the original scrolls. He already had them in his hand and replaced them as he went along. It didn't take long, since he only had four scrolls. Once they were returned, he made his way to the staircase and up to the second floor. He wasn't finished training just yet and, if he was lucky, could still get in a few more techniques before he tired himself out.

Making his way down the shelves, he finally came upon the two scrolls he was looking for. Intermediate techniques for both the Pai Qua Quan style and the Nigirikobushi no Shintou style. He slipped them into his pocket and made his way back down the stairs. As always, the heat of the lower floors made his shudder. He proceeded quickly from the base of the staircase on the ground floor to the entrance of the library, then out into the cool sands beyond.

«E»merging from the streets and into the heat from the library was a shock. A shock that Saqr was getting more used to, but a shock all the same. This time, he made his way easily to the two shelves on the second level of the library to return the scrolls he had used. He decided he didn't need any replacement scrolls for the time being and walked back down to the first floor.

He really did want to know about whether or not he would be in a group, but thought that could come a little later. Finding a secluded reading table in the far corner on the first floor, he made himself comfortable and lowered his head down onto his arms, crossed on the desk. He'd take a small nap and then find out what to do afterward. A yawn escaped his lips, muffled by the hood. Presently, he was asleep.

As Bast entered the multi-story building that was the library, her golems broke out and stood on either side of the entrance like statuesque sentinels. The woman didn't acknowledge the change as she made her way over to the staircases and down into the basement, where she shooed out any bystanders and claimed a table for the incoming negotiations. As the last of the bystanders made their way out of the room, she grabbed a pad of paper and summoned a pen with which to take notes.

"So, Lady Petrel," the woman began as she took a seat, "I believe this will go quicker if you outline what kind of information you have and what you're looking to get out of this exchange before we start. What do Gimangakure and your 'Lucius' stand to gain from this?"
