Reya was groggy. She had been awake late last night going over the details of as many locations as she could until at last her weyrmate told her to shut up. At that point, Reya had elected to relocate to the bowl to continue her rehearsal. In hindsight, that decision might not have been a great one. The multiple mugs of klah she had consumed earlier that morning in an attempt to combat her drowsiness had yet to kick in, except for a bit of tightness around the bladder. Or maybe that was nerves. Either way, she was anxious and sleepy.

Do you want to check the coordinates? Raqisath asked. She was nice about it, not pushy, but her concern was evident. She did not want to get lost between any more than Reya did, but there was precious little she could do except to remind her rider that they could always have someone double check them.

No, Reya replied stubbornly. I can do this. We can do this.

She felt the mental equivalent of a shrug and Raqi leapt from her ledge at their instructor's signal, blinking into the chilly darkness of between for eight agonizing heartbeats before emerging in the air above Runnercraft Hall.

Reya released her breath and sagged in her seat, just a little. One down, four to go.

1. You failed. You had been so certain of your coordinates, or at least confident enough to give your dragon the signal to Between. But as you count your breaths, as you find yourself lost in that darkness, you begin to feel a surge of panic as the eternal blackness continues to envelop you. Your dragon begins to panic, scrambling to try to find him or herself; you also start to gasp, to try valiantly to breathe. You can't feel your dragon, save for that last, panicked and mental connection. As you thrash around in the darkness, you know there is no escape. At least you and Yours are together in the end.

Dead.

=alternatively= you may opt out of this tragic fate by having your weyrling double check their coordinates with an assistant. Don't let pride get in the way of living!

"Okay, next," Reya sighed, placing in her thoughts an image of Dark Woods Hold.

Reya, is that where we're going? Raqi asked. Shouldn't there be...woods?

Reya blanched as she realized that the green was correct. There definitely ought to be trees in her mental image of a place called Dark Woods Hold. Chagrined, she signaled to one of the assistants that she could use some assistance, because the more she strove to conjure up a mental image of the place, the more certain she was that she was truly conjuring it, instead of recalling it. Trying to go to an imaginary place would almost certainly kill her and Raqi, so she didn't want to do that.

Once they'd received their correction and a sharp look, Reya once again fixed the image in her mind and indicated to Raqi to go. After another, even more agonizing period, they appeared in the correct place. In the back of her head, Reya was fuming at her failure. She was better than this.

In the back of her mind Reya could not help marveling that dragons looked for anything in their human companions beyond a capacious memory for places. It was extremely abnormal, in her opinion, to be expected to exactly remember what every place she might ever want to go in the entire world looked like. And yet that was what she and any other dragonrider was expected to do. It came as a genuine surprise to her that her brother had been able to do this.

But he had done it, obviously, and he'd been doing it for about fifteen years, which gave fairly good evidence for two things: first, he couldn't be as much of a dimwit as she'd assumed he was growing up, and second, she ought to be able to do this, too.

"Seawater River Cothold," she murmured. It sounded like a difficult place to exist, with a nonpotable river. Maybe they had a marsh that produced lots of edible things. For their sake, she hoped so.

Ready? Raqi asked. She trusted Reya, and she hoped that her rider was confident in the location she showed her, because that was where she was taking them.

Fortunately, they arrived in good shape.

Perhaps it was the thought that her brother could do this which spurred her on, but the next location, Bloodstone Cothold, came much more easily to Reya's mind, and her confidence in picturing it made it easier for Raqisath to bring them there. It was sort of like a positive feedback loop. It should not have come to a surprise to her that confidence would prove important in traveling between, but it was not until this exercise that she realized its role.

In other practice jaunts over shorter distances to familiar places, with accompaniment and support, it had been easy to feel confident that things would work out all right. At least moderately so. It was her worry for being entirely self-reliant which had shaken her confidence so as she prepared for today's exercises. That being so, it had almost certainly been a mistake to stay awake so late rehearsing. She couldn't undo that, but she would try to remember in the future that she did neither herself nor Raqi favors by exhausting and doubting herself.

Let's do this, she said to Raqi. Her tone was still grim, because her revelation had not made her any less tired, nor actually alleviated much of her stress, but at least it had some confidence behind it, like she was only tired, rather than tired and terrified she would accidentally kill herself and her dragon.

Reya yawned before she reached for home with her mind, but all she could come up with was her parents' home in Rivercrest. Her exhaustion vanished with a sharp, sick stab to her gut as she tried again, only to see her office in the back of the brothel. With a growing feeling of panic, she pushed that mental image aside and grasped for another, only to come up with the small quarters where she had lived with Joha, and largely without Joha. She had loved that place, until he had made it so she no longer felt safe there. she would never forgive him for that.

Reya? Raqisath ventured. We only have one more jump. Home.

Reya closed her eyes, hoping it would help if she wasn't looking at the mining cothold which was so little like the Weyr, but she continued to draw a blank for their coordinates. High Reaches simply didn't feel like home to her, and trying to come up with the coordinates for it while thinking "home" was next to impossible.

"I can't get it," she whispered, somewhere between frustration and horror. This was not supposed to be how it went. She knew this. She had one of the most disciplined minds she had ever met, poor taste in men notwithstanding, and she had yet to encounter an obstacle she couldn't navigate.

Reya... Raqi's concern echoed Reya's and reminded her that this was absolutely not the time to brazen things out, no matter how self-reliant Reya tried to be in most of her doings.

Ask them to confirm our coordinates, Reya said, her tone absolutely acerbic at her defeat. Even as she said it, though, there was a wash of relief knowing that with this support they would almost certainly make it home, and her exhaustion returned so that she was yawning when confirmation came.

It didn't matter. Just like that she was reminded of the stupidly simple task of picturing the place from which they had departed, and had the energy to hold it in her mind well enough for Raqi to fix on it and bring them back to the Weyr. She could feel Raqi's relief as she circled in for a landing, though the green was, as always, conscious of how she would be perceived and made every effort to appear as though there had been no struggles on either of their behalves and everything was shiny.

By the time they landed, Reya was wondering how she could manage to practice more with a dragon, but without getting into trouble. It seemed unlikely R'bin would go for something like that, even if he didn't have duties of his own to attend to. Still, there had to be something she could do.

1. Weavercraft Hall (Southern Boll Hold)

R'lyr gave one last check to the gear with Andelath fussing in his head, the brown helpfully pointing out bits. He slid up, giving Andelath neck a soothing pat and took a deep breath, remembering the coordinates and passed them along and one two three.

They were in the air and then pip and then plop that was Southern Boll below and they had safety came through. Good. "Alright then. On to the next one."

Redharc was next and... wait.. wait. Ugh. R'lyr sighed and rested his head on Andelath reaching out. 'Ande, luv, can you have these checked?' He questioned softly, giving the dragon a set of coordinates and waited for the return back. He was not going to end up dead because he forgot a number.

Okay, they had needed a bit of help with Radharc, but that was Keogh hold down there and they had came out okay. R'lyr nodded, unwavering in his confidence. He knew they would manage. Even if a bit of memorization mix up with Radharc.
