Before she knew it, the signal was given and the whites, blues, and greens from First Wave disappeared --- only for Second Wave to appear and take their place. Though Venandith rumbled greeting, ichor still dripping from his face, they didn't have much time to think. The wind pushed Thread back into their airspace, and it was up to them to flame.

Not every patch was picked up by Ven, and Zyamel found herself frustrated. It was hard to make a call, especially when Ven sometimes had ideas all his own. Sometimes she felt they needed to focus on one patch, but Ven would instead go for another. Were other weyrlings struggling with this or was she just lucky?

Unfortunately, as she blinked Between, she found herself straying too far from her wingspace. Though they caught the patch, they almost caught a fellow weyrling in the process. For Faranth's sake... She'd have to apologize later.

Things start off slow, but you manage to catch a few strands of Thread. For the most part, you realize that things seem to be a mix of quiet followed by moments of stress. You catch a solid tangle, but another few strands fall through. You find it's tricky when there are entire groups falling overhead together, and you find yourself struggling to make the right choice on what to catch. In one instance, you almost singe a wingmate by forgetting your airspace. Rookie mistake! [If you roll this 3 times, you actually find yourself burning a wingmate. Quote a weyrling and have them take -5 HP from burn damage! The counter then resets.]

T'rin and Blue Ingonth

Ingonth's calm felt eerie and cold, even to the young man who was largely looking forward to graduation because it would afford him more freedom to hunt down (and possibly maim) the people who had taken his brother. The blue was focused from the moment they awoke that morning, all of his sass temporarily silenced by his churning thoughts.

When A'zota gave them the signal to begin, the pair flew high, secure in their perfection.

5-6. Your adrenaline is pumping and you feel fit to fight! Whatever fears or worries you have, you’re absolutely ready to take the world by storm. Your dragon wheels and dives, and you wind up successfully flaming some strands. Of course, you also find yourself suddenly dangling in some mighty precarious positions as your dragon avoids getting smacked by a tangle of Thread. The straps you so valiantly worked on are the only thing keeping you from plummeting to your death. Let’s hope Thread doesn’t latch onto those thick leathers… and if they do, that your backup security straps work! Thankfully, as the fight continues, you focus on what’s important--flaming down Thread. If white, green, or blue, you wind up saving one of your wingmates thanks to your impressive quick wingwork! Damage Save Quote a wingmate and save them from the damage they would take.

< Damned wind, > Alquemieth growled as they fought against it. It was the likely culprit as to why he had been seeing so many mistakes in others, though that was no excuse. But he could see that a sheet of Thread was now making its way at a new angle thanks to that wind into the dragonrider pair ahead of them, and he shouted sharply to Zezollath, < Jump Between! > There was no way he would reach it in time to flame it down himself.

7. If you’re a brown whose adult size is 34’ or larger or a bronze, you’ll fight against the wind but your strength and stamina allow you to pull through. You're able to play a bit of heroics and even manage to flame some Thread from one of your struggling fellows. Save Quote a wingmate and save them from damage!

They wheeled and flew magnificently, though not for show. Alquemieth was a knife of a bronze, and he had to take advantage of it while he still could; exhaustion began to creep upon him, even as he tried to outfly it. His stamina was his bane, and he spat its name as he twisted away from Thread, flaming it down with vicious pleasure. That he had to help someone by taking the brunt of more 'Fall barely registered to him as heroism and more akin to a calculated maneuver--he could obviously take more damage than the ******** this, Ar'din thought at some point, to nothing and no-one in particular, in the same way some might curse after a particularly hard workout.

If brown or bronze, you play a bit of hero. Knowing your dragon should be able to take a hit, you can Self-Sacrifice. Quote a wingmate and take their damage instead. While it may hurt you, it also means you were able to save the day.

T'rin and Blue Ingonth

Just as T'rin was contemplating forcing his dragon to slow down, the Thread around them lessened a bit. Ingonth spat one last burst of flame as they flapped back to where they were supposed to be, growling as a flash of brown hurried out of the way.

    Ingonth...

What? Are we not doing well?

You know we are. You also know that we're pushing too hard. I refuse to let you get hurt.

More Thread poured out like pus from the sky, and he was not so lucky this time at avoiding it. Ar'din clenched his jaw and braced himself as Alquemieth attempted and failed to pull the same maneuver that had saved them before. The wind was too much this time, even for him. His flame seemed to be pushed back against them even as a smattering of fresh Thread joined. They jumped Between at Ar'din's order and returned a little more scathed, though the bronze would have continued flying if it weren't against instruction.

11. Ouch, ouch, ouch, and more ouch. When it rains it pours, or so the saying goes, and while some of your wingmates might be in relatively quiet airspace, the wind keeps kicking Thread into yours! While you and your dragon flame and charr the ancient enemy, it unfortunately doesn’t leave you unscathed.

Your dragon winds up with some thread wrapped around their tail, but avoid being thrown into a larger patch by sheer luck. Damage -3 HP

T'rin and Blue Ingonth

    I won't.

T'rin sighed, ducking low against Ingonth's back as the dragon continued to fight. As confident as he was, he also knew that pride came before a fall. He hoped they wouldn't fall too hard.

18. You're doing great and feeling good! Though you wind up with a few small ashburns, and you're still feeling a little anxious, nothing has gone horribly wrong. When Thread gets close, you make your move and flame it away. When you're tapped to deliver firestone, you do so with no trouble. This isn't so bad... Not at all! You're feeling good, and that's what matters. You and your dragon surely are naturals, baby! Good job! You're certain the Weyrlingmaster's have noticed your natural skill.

T'rin and Blue Ingonth

Just because old human grandmothers have sayings, doesn't mean we have to— Ingonth shook his wing as a clump of ash brushed past it.

    See? It hurts.

    Barely.

    Just... be more careful.

    Hmph.

The blue darted higher, completely forgetting about the sting of his injury when he noticed the massive clump of Thread drifting toward his cousin.

Cythereath, move! he barked, the mental shout accompanied by an audible honk. He was too far away to make it to her before it would, but he dove in the green's direction anyway.

15. As you're wheeling and diving and cutting through the thread, you make some impressive moves. Your dragon takes some ash damage but it's light, and a reminder to try to avoid flying directly into the burning flames. Damage -2 HP

Thankfully, throughout, you do manage to see some thread coming right at a fellow weyrling. You call out to them and save the day! My oh my, how impressive you are! Save Quote a wingmate and nullify any damage they're to take!

T'rin and Blue Ingonth

It took a minute or two longer than it should have for T'rin to persuade Ingonth that it was time to stop flaming Thread and do what they were meant to.

I'm not in the mood to play catch. I want to fight until I'm too tired to fly.

Do you also want to be held back for ignoring orders until some bronze tells you you're good enough to fight again?

There was a pause, and then a series of twittering honks. Fine. Let's play catch.

12-14. Firestone run! A weyrlings primary purpose, after all. Roll 5 D100s. Evens are successful tosses that make their mark. Odds are botched tosses that result in a second or third throw needed. (No you don’t have to roll it, it is just assumed to have happened.)

T'rin and Blue Ingonth

They hadn't done all that well with the whole firestone thing, but overall this first fall had gone decently. All they had to do now was keep their guard up for a few more minutes, and then they would be on the ground again. It only took a moment for their defenses to drop, a shared breath of distraction during which they both worried over how the other weyrlings had fared.

In that moment, an insidioius clump of Thread landed across the length of Ingonth's tail.

His pained scream was for his rider alone, his eyes whirling a sickly pale yellow as they blinked back to High Reaches.

Once again, the struggle was real. Though they continued to wheel and dive Zyamel once again got them turned around and well outside their airspace. Once more, Ven's flame almost singed one of their peers, much to her embarrassment.

i just need to focus... Maybe it was the stress, maybe it was exhaustion, maybe it was Ven's pain but all the pride she had at the beginning was now turning more into anger and frustration.

Airspace. She needed to remember her airspace. Venandith needed to remember, too.

Thankfully, the close-calls and issues with airspace seemed to be a temporary state. With a surge of love and confidence from Venandith, Zyamel did her best to refocus. Fight through the pain, cut through the distractions. She was the daughter of Zheria and V'mel. She was a dragonrider of Pern, and she would not let either of them down. She refused to let her fellow weyrlings down, or the good people of Pern.

We can do this. Venandith assured cooly, helping to numb her worries.

We will persevere. Together. She agreed, sending as strong a wave of love and pride back at her brown.

This is what Venandith had been hatched to do, and what she had been born to do.

Their next firestone run went smooth, and Venandith had no trouble chasing down and charring Thread. The blue dragon did allow his eyes to whirl a bright blue when Anakumath reached out to offer him some praise. They are each of them precious and all worth saving, if but I could...Your words are like a balm and shall bolster me through the rest of this Fall. Never mind if he already knew he'd been hatched to be a hero--it was nice to be recognized for it all the same.

True to his word, the brown bellowed his pride, and dove after the next tangle of Thread. He couldn't save all his clutchmates, but he would certainly try.
