For all the times she had visited Western Hold, Sorsha had no idea about Sand's End at all. She had the coordinates, though, so she steeled herself and sent them to Leoth before jumping Between...

...and appearing nearly on target, just a few dragon lengths from being directly overhead of the minor Hold. Sorsha gave a relieved smile and thumped Leoth on the neck. "That's my girl," she murmured.

You're the one who gave me the visualization, Mine. I could not have done it without you.

If you have a a 3 or lower in Anxiety/Confidence levels, perhaps you needed more fear of Between because something goes wrong and you fail to return and are lost forever... unless you get your coordinates checked.

..."but first, I want to check the coordinates. Just to be safe."

It was a good idea she did, because she had misremembered a couple of important details that could have gotten them lost Between. Once more shaken, she sent Leoth the correct coordinates and counted to 3 in the black nothing of Between before emerging over the Bowl of Western Weyr.

Drained but successful (barely), Sorsha unfastened her riding straps and slid down Leoth's golden shoulder. "I'm ready for a nap..."

Astriana was looking over her straps on Moratath, to make sure everything was the way it should be. She looked up to give Liat her attention as the Weyrlingmaster explained what they would be doing for today's lesson. She quietly nodded her head, they would be put to the test in the coming month with their coordinates, as she knew they would. That was why she had spent time pouring over the maps and charts they had been studying. She climbed into her straps and got Moratath up in the air, so they could make their first jump.

We can definitely handle this, you have been studying these every chance you have gotten. You are amazing, let's show everyone,Moratath thought to her, the love he showed Astri pouring into the blonde.

Let's hope the others will stay safe too, I don't want anyone lost to the cold of between,Astri thought back to him. She had learned to care more about her fellow Weyrlings and was trying to socialize more with them. She even had Moratath admit to her he cared as well, least in private, but she had him working on his own social skills as well.

As long as they don't get full of themselves, they will be fine. And so we will,Moratath replied, allowing a small hint of caring that only his rider would pick up on. He got to the right height, before feeling Astriana pass him the first set of coordinates they would need. Then he hopped into the cold of between. They felt it, before popping out above Western Hold.

Well done, Moratath. Alright, let's keep going,Astri spoke, as they circled the hold.

3. Black Sand Hold
4. White Cliff Weyrhold
5. Western Weyr

Astriana knew Solace Hold was next, so she pictured the coordinates in her mind. She felt Moratath give his acknowledgement, as both of them braced themselves and hoped between once more. The coldness surrounded them in those few breaths, before they reappeared over Solace Hold.

A second one down, doing well so far,Moratath told her simply. She nodded her head, however, they were not done with this circuit yet.

Right, let's hope it stays that way. Let's take a moment, then on to the next location,Astri agreed. She watched as they flew over Solace Hold, to let them prepare for their next jump.

Quote:
5) 3-6: Mostly success! Some potential failure!

If this is your first roll for this circuit, and you have an anxiety level of 1 or 2, you find yourself in dire straits and panicking during your first jump. If you have a 2, you make it out, though it certainly took a lot longer and you're now feeling extra-stressed about this entire affair. If you had a 1, you get lost forever... unless you get your coordinates double-checked.

If this is your fourth or fifth roll for this circuit, and you have a confidence level of 4 or 5, a distraction level of 1 or 2, a Visualization of 1 you find yourself struggling and in need of assistance! If you don't take it or get it, you'll fail your trip Between and wind up lost forever. Whoops!

Alternatively, any of those deaths can be avoided by getting coordinates checked =or= taking a Scare. While it takes way longer to get to your destination, you manage, albeit are shaken. Your Visualization Levels drop one point though, because clearly, you're not doing so hot at this and now are beginning to doubt yourself.
(second roll of this circuit, so success)

Astriana wanted to make sure they did everything right, since Liat said they should take their time. Once they had had a moment, she gave her beloved blue the next set of coordinates he would need. She let him know when she was ready, then she felt the cold of between as they jumped. A few breaths later, they were appearing above Black Sand Hold. She was so glad to see it below them, another successful jump.

Definitely good to see the Black Sand Hold, means another jump done correctly. Alright, ready whenever you are, AstrianaMine,Moratath told her calmly.

Yes, it is very good to see each location we get to. Okay, give it a moment, we are not in a rush. I would rather make sure we do this calmly, not make mistakes, if we can help it,Astri replied back. She let them fly over their current location for a moment, to prepare once more.

Astriana pictured their next coordinates firmly in her mind, making sure Moratath received them. She took a breath, before giving the signal for him to make the jump between. Bracing herself for the familiar sensation of cold as they disappeared into it. Three breaths and they popped over White Cliff Weyrhold.

Another location completed. Where to next?Moratath asked her, knowing she would give him the coordinates when ready.

Home, for a brief rest, before we do some more work on the places we know very well, she answered. She was looking forward to getting back to the Weyr.

Astriana made sure they were both ready for the jump back to their home. Once she felt ready, she gave the coordinates that were quite familiar to them, making sure to picture everything. When Moratath gave the affirmative, she readied herself and then they leapt between. The cold surrounded them during those few breaths, before they appeared over the welcoming sight of Western Weyr. They headed back down to where the others would be, to give themselves a quick break, before they would do it all over again.

We will know those locations so very well before the sevenday is over,Moratath spoke, knowing it was true. They had done well for this first time, hopefully it would become second nature even more as they practiced.

With the second week going well, Jacquol was once again ready to launch into the third week with nary a care nor a worry. Mentally she rattled off the coordinates so fast even Jubath paused, attempting to untangle the jumble of them—and the green cringed as she recognized her rider's recurring fault of impatience and careless overconfidence. It took more than one nudge to get the woman to ask for a double check on the coordinates... but when they reappeared after a pop between, safe and sound over Waters Edge, Jubath felt assured that it had been the right choice.

Sorsha's third sevenday at the solo Between lessons began with a decision to go through the second circuit one more time. She just didn't feel confident enough, after the near-disaster of the second sevenday, to move on to the more difficult circuit. It was a decision she'd made after consulting with Weyrlingmaster Liat and expressing her concerns; better to repeat the circuit than wind up lost Between...

Settling herself in on Leoth's shoulders, the red-haired girl patted the golden hide beneath her. "Here we go again," she smiled.

Until we master it. And we shall! Leoth responded with waves of confidence and love.

Quote:

"...But first," Sorsha hesitated, "let's double check the coordinates with Orioth."

Leoth gave a snort, but did as she was asked -- and a good thing as well, because they were off. Sorsha sighed; why was she having such a hard time with this? Urging the young gold dragon Between, they emerged over the Courtesan Hall yet again. "Good girl," Sorsha patted Leoth's neck. "We did it."

Sorsha was beginning to have serious confidence issues after having her coordinates corrected time and time again. She had studied so very hard, and memorized everything -- or so she thought! Maybe she just wasn't adequately visualizing their target destinations as well as she should be. She was just going to have to try harder.

"Okay, my love, off to Redoubt Hold again..."

Quote:
8-12: Success! You manage to make the leap without any trouble! Good job! Breathe easy!

Really concentrating on visualizing the Hold on the edge of the desert, Sorsha urged Leoth Between... and in a matter of heartbeats appeared over Redoubt. "Yes!" she crowed, pumping a fist. That was it -- the visualization part was where she must be having all the problems!

That's my girl, Leoth crooned proudly. Keep it up -- I know you can do it!

3. Stoney Tower Hold (Minor Hold beholden to Redoubt Hold)
4. Green Plains Cothold (Cothold beholden to White Cliff Weyrhold)
5. Western Weyr

It was getting continuously harder - and Aryale was feeling tugs of distractions as the month went along. It was hard to not know it for what it was, and what would come of it.

But she'd deal with that problem when it threw itself in the air. What problem? Yaguareth asked, as though she could pull it apart now and have it done with. Aryale throttled the thought away. Not now. I need to focus on the jumps. There was no real secret, however. Yaguareth knew - she just needed Aryale to admit it had her nervous.

The faint glow of hide, not the jumping.

Quote:
2: Success and Failure!

If this is your First or Second roll and you have a 1 or 2 in any of your stats, you are going to botch pretty dang hard and fail to make the leap. This ain't no child's play, after all. You need to be alert, you need to know your s**t, and you need to know how the heck to do this!

If this is your third roll, you manage to succeed! Woot!

If this is your fourth or fifth roll, and you have a 5 in any of experience levels, you wind up mucking up and fail make the leap. Oops! Perhaps you were over confident or you felt too self-assured.

Everyone else? You're good to go!

Water's Edge Cothold was a place Aryale had learned of on a map. On paper. It made for a fine testing ground for more daring leaps, and she pictured it well enough that Yaguareth was content to think about other things - like the jumping and checking to see which of her siblings had also made it there.

Aryale was glad for it.

Next stop was Paradise Falls Hold. That should be pretty straightforward to visualize, Sorsha thought. Concentrating as hard as she could, she pictured the namesake waterfalls in her mind and ordered Leoth Between...

Quote:

5. Western Weyr

The cold air was a good way to clear her head, and Aryale was finding the jumps to be easier to handle the farther along their training with Between got. She would never find it cozy, however, and her thoughts never lingered on it.

Only on faces at home. She pushed them away to focus on another place that had existed on paper until they'd been taken the rounds and given coordinates.

Quote:
You failed. You had been so certain of your coordinates, or at least confident enough to give your dragon the signal to Between. But as you count your breaths, as you find yourself lost in that darkness, you begin to feel a surge of panic as the eternal blackness continues to envelop you. Your dragon begins to panic, scrambling to try to find him or herself; you also start to gasp, to try valiantly to breathe. You can't feel your dragon, save for that last, panicked and mental connection. As you thrash around in the darkness, you know there is no escape. At least you and Yours are together in the end.

Dead.

=Alternatively= you may opt out of this tragic fate by having your weyrling double check their coordinates with an assistant. Don't let pride get in the way of living! Otherwise, they may opt to take a Scare, and though the jump takes longer than it usually should, somehow, miraculously, you wind up in the general location.

Your confidence score automatically drops down one point.

Additionally, if you roll this 3 times total, you will be enlisted in remedial lessons =and= an NPC has died. Please let Uta know so they can suffer the fate that should have been yours.

It was a long jump, and Aryale's heart tightened in her chest. 3 turned to 4. Had she done it wrong? It had been going so well - was it because she let the lure of home and things to come distract her for just that moment?

She'd never been so thankful to feel warm air on her face before the panic really set in, and Yaguareth would circle above the minor hold a few more times while Aryale gathered herself. That had been too close.

And more than the fear of her own demise, she feared for Yaguareth. And those who would have to come to terms to it if she'd failed so.
