Things were going all right one moment, both rider and dragon flying high off adrenaline and determination, when things took a turn. What had been a quiet moment turned hairy when they found themselves in the midst of a sheet of Thread. The brown rolled to the side, belching forth his hot flame, and Zyamel clung to the straps she had built. Though they bit into her leg, she kept herself as low to Ven as she could.

Where was their coverage?

The current formation should have had some of the smaller colors staggered above them, but they were no where to be found. Her frustration peaked when Venandith hissed in pain. Some thread had found his large wings and already had made tears and holes upon the precious sails.

Between! She encouraged, trying to focus on a proper visual.

The brown was only too happy to oblige.

Quote:
It’s all the little stuff that is causing you problems! One minute your airspace is clear, another minute you find it full of Thread. Where is your cover!? If you’re a bronze or brown rider, you can’t help but feel that the smaller colors aren’t doing their jobs in trying to keep your dragon safe. If you’re a white, green, or blue rider, you almost start to suspect the larger color you’re covering is just using you as some meat shield and not bothering to flame like they should. Whether it’s actually true, or paranoia from all the stress, you can feel your irritation levels rise. Aren’t you supposed to be on a team and work together? Ugh! Damage -3 HP.

[If this is your 3rd time rolling this prompt throughout the game, Quote a Wingmate to take Strife. For the rest of the game, you are feeling salty. You cannot save the quoted dragon from damage of any type and if they save you from damage, it will only half what you take (rounded down). Huff. The counter resets after you take Strife. You may carry this agitation with you post-game to work out (or duke out?!) in the Barracks.]

They were in the last hour. Zyamel could tell she was getting sloppy, especially with her Between coordinates.

Focus, Mine. We're almost out of this. Not long to go at all. Venandith gently reminded His, sending a wave of love. Even as he dove out of one clump, Zyamel saw that they needed to get out of the way of another. Her last jumps had been hastily imagined and took them out of their airspace or too far from Thread. This time, she attempted to correct.

This would surely be where they needed to be.

One, two, three...

They reappeared, but unfortunately, Thread was literally everywhere.

Venandith roared in rage to hide the pain, even as Zyamel shrieked in alarm. The pain was immense. Venandith found himself covered even as Zyamel saw the white threads tangle upon her riding gear. It would burn through quickly, eat her, devour her...

No. Between. BETWEEN.

She imagined a spot, and Venandith dragged her there quickly. Another three breaths, almost four, and they were out but looking worse for wear. Ven? You all right? Back to the Weyr? She asked, her concern immediate. She could feel him struggle, could feel his pain... but she could also feel his pride.

It looks worse than it is. You did brilliant! He assured, doing his best to shore up the last of his strength. It's almost done. We can do this. We will do this. The dragon was determined, and though Zyamel knew they should return to the Weyr....

Pride gripped her, just as it gripped Ven. To return to the Weyr so close to the end, with trailing edge so close... No. She'd take the risk, only because Venandith wished to do so.

It wasn't the right decision. Part of Zyamel knew it, or would come to know it, but in the heat of battle she wasn't going to give up. She wouldn't give in. Her shoulder ached, but besides ruining the arm of her jacket, she felt relatively safe.

We've come this far...

Let's finish this.

Everything seemed to be going great. You manage to flame down quite a few clumps, and are even able to show off some impressive aeriel displays. Look at how amazing you are! Unfortunately, as a new Threadfighter, you’re finding it a lot more dizzying. Your jumps Between are sloppier than they usually are at drills.

If you are a more confident rider, your sudden confusion winds up costing you. In your attempts to correct your earlier trouble, you overcompensate for your earlier mistakes and this time wind up jumping Between right into a clump of Thread. Damage Take -5 damage.

The end of Threadfall was near and Venandith continued to sear down Thread. Unfortunately, where the young woman hoped the end would be relatively quiet, instead, Thread seemed to be raining down in their airspace harder than ever. Had something gone wrong in the higher altitudes or was this normal?

Unfortunately, though Venandith did his best to flame and avoid getting scored, it wasn't easy. He was tired, he was sore, and his focus was fogged up by pain. He was too proud to admit defeat though, and refused to listen to Zyamel's encouragement to return. V'mel hadn't ordered them back, but the girl knew that it was up to riders (usually) to care for their mounts. Had she pushed him too hard? Had he pushed himself?

We're almost there. I can-- The brown's insistance was cut off as Skerath's cry cut in.

Thankfully, the tangle that neither had saw coming down their way was easily avoided thanks to their wingmates close eye. Zyamel was both relieved and irritated... While she'd thank Iathe later, right now, the fact she needed to be rescued at all was upsetting. Still, the girl doubted Ven could handle more scoring--even if the brown seemed to think he could.

Saving Moirath had put him worse off than he cared to admit... but that would be their little secret.

Venandith sent Skerath a wave of genuine gratitude. And here I didn't think you cared.

Zamistia was working on calming herself down, telling herself she could do this. She reached into her bag of firestone and tossed a piece to Nanuth. Unfortunately, pain began to radiate in her mouth and her arm, causing her to rub at the arm. Ooo, the arm pain was her's, but she knew the mouth pain was not. She mentally winced, realizing Nanuth must have bit into his tongue when she had tossed him the firestone.

Sorry, Nanuth. I think I need to work on tosses a little more,Zamistia apologized.

Yeah, might be a good idea. And I need to be more careful, was too eager to get going with flaming,Nanuth replied. Speaking of thread, he noticed a strand and managed to turn it into dust. However, the distraction caused the pair to miss a formation change.

Nanuth, watch out!Misty warned, catching one of their fellow Weyrlings out of the corner of her eye. She held on as Nanuth made a quick turn, to get out of the way. Then quickly got into formation, that was way too close.

Hour 1, Roll 1- 5.
5-6. Your adrenaline is pumping and you feel fit to fight! Whatever fears or worries you have, you’re absolutely ready to take the world by storm. Your dragon wheels and dives, and you wind up successfully flaming some strands. Of course, you also find yourself suddenly dangling in some mighty precarious positions as your dragon avoids getting smacked by a tangle of Thread. The straps you so valiantly worked on are the only thing keeping you from plummeting to your death. Let’s hope Thread doesn’t latch onto those thick leathers… and if they do, that your backup security straps work! Thankfully, as the fight continues, you focus on what’s important--flaming down Thread. If white, green, or blue, you wind up saving one of your wingmates thanks to your impressive quick wingwork! Damage Save Quote a wingmate and save them from the damage they would take. If brown or bronze, you play a bit of hero. Knowing your dragon should be able to take a hit, you can Self-Sacrifice. Quote a wingmate and take their damage instead. While it may hurt you, it also means you were able to save the day.

Hour 1, Roll 2- 8. 8. If your rider is naturally more nervous or anxious, you will find yourself jumping way outside of formation and wind up in a wingmates airspace. Damage: Quote a wingmate and have them take -5 damage from averting running into you and flying right into a strand of Threadfall

If you are a more confident rider, your sudden confusion winds up costing you. In your attempts to correct your earlier trouble, you overcompensate for your earlier mistakes and this time wind up jumping Between right into a clump of Thread. Damage Take -5 damage.

Hour 1, Roll 3- 2. 2-3. Things got heavy, fast! Thread seems to be everywhere, or at least, slipping through more than you thought it would. Is it just your location? Every time you roll this prompt, the damage goes up +1 as you and your dragon begin to exhaust themselves. Saves can nullify some or all of the damage, but the counter will continue to go up; Encouragement will reset the counter back to -1.

Hour 2, Roll 1- 19. 19-20. It's a bit of a mixed bag here. To start, your dragon bit his or her tongue while you were feeding them stone and now there's just a constant residual ache in both your mouths. While you've managed to spit flame at the Enemy and char it into dust, you clearly need to work on your firestone toss because you wrenched an arm muscle during your last throw. Ow. To make matters worse, you wound up missing a formation change, and almost had a mid-air collision with a fellow weyrling. Zamistia heard the call for firestone from the wings fighting above, it was time to do their main duty. They headed up to give the riders the firestone they needed, but things did not go very well at all. She didn't know if it was because of her arm from giving her own dragon a piece of firestone, but she had to throw a couple of times for all but one of the riders. She had even been yelled at by one very ticked off wingrider.

Well, it could have been worse, could have been to someone in a leadership position. We will do better next time,Nanuth assured as they rejoined their wing.

Zamistia figured they would be doing more thread fighting, but more calls for firestone came from above. So she headed to the Weyr to pick up more sacks, before she came back up to where the bags were needed. Even though it wasn't perfect, she got most of them on the first toss. Only two took a second throw, so that was definitely progress.

See, told you we would do better, didn't I?Nanuth pointed out to his rider as they returned to formation in with their fellow Weyrlings. He could feel some relief wash over her at that, feeling some pride in his words come from his red headed light.

This was their first ‘real’ test and Shar and Yulaniath were ready. This was traditionally a bit of a bloodbath but neither of them were afraid of scars and wounds. As they ascended for the second half of the fight, they were greeted with their first scoring. It seemed this wasn’t going to be a calm day fighting Thread! But Shar and Yulan welcomed it as blood and ichor fell from them both, the desire to fight pounding in their hearts.

The pain was an afterthought as the duo flew, dipping and diving, flaming and dodging. It was clear Yulan and Shar were a seamless team, hearts and minds working together as one. They even managed to flame some Thread that was threatening a fellow dragon rider pair.

On they flew, this time unable to dodge a bit of Thread. It stung but they pod it no mind, working through the sting to continue flying. This was their first time actually fighting Thread, after all. They were going to stick it out!

Again they flew with confidence and grace, silent to anyone nearby but constantly speaking to one another, constantly in touch. There’s Thread there, an errant flame here, jump Between, flawless.

Again a stray bit of Thread managed to find Shar and Yulan. They were so close to finishing their shift that they powered through. Perhaps if they had gotten this tired earlier on they’d go back to the Weyr to rest, but not this time.

The rest of the flight went smoothly. Better than smoothly in fact. Shar and Yulan pulled off some fairly impressive flying, not focused at all on showing off but managing to do so all the same.

Hour 3: 18. Feeling Good!

Hour 4:

Ce'rian had felt sick since the moment he awoke. Today was the day. Everything they'd been learning and studying now came together to (hopefully) keep one another alive. The reality and weight of what he'd gotten himself into by accepting Search and Impression sat upon his shoulders, and the thought of what became of K'ell still haunted him. He missed his friend... His only real friend since he'd arrived. Ce'rian had known that the brown rider had struggled but... He never thought they wouldn't be there to see one another get through the ranks.

The same with Cavera and Avirforth. While he hadn't known them as well, Cythereath had spoken about the complimentary blue with humor and fondness. More faces they would never see again.

So, as the time drew nearer, he watched the skies in the Bowl, holding close to Cythereat's head as time passed. Dragons came and went--some to resupply, others to tend to injuries. The moments seemed to drag on and he wondered if his family knew what to day was; wondered if C'rian knew, or even cared. So far from home, the young man wondered if his fathers knew what he'd be facing, and that he might well never see them again. Looking around, Ce'rian couldn't help but feel quite suddenly alone. What few friends he had at Western had surely forgotten about him... They were riders themselves, and had their own lives. And here...

I can tell you all about the boys and girls here, Mine. When we get back and things settle, I can guarantee you needn't feel so alone. The green's eyes whirled a bright purple-blue, though there were faint flecks of white and yellow near their edges. She would never admit to being afraid... but she was, deep in her hearts.

Thankfully, when it was time to change-over, Ce'rian and Cythereath were ready. The small, dainty green didn't miss a beat, coming out of Between and into the fight ever prepared. Any reservation and fear was forgotten as they dove into the thick of it. The strands that dared to threaten them were quickly charred, and the little creature was easily able to avoid taking any strikes. Almost immediately, a cry for stone went up, and they were asked to deliver--which Ce'rian (much to his surprise) managed without issue.

See, Mine? We are magnificent! Cythereath trumpted in delight, thrilling at the fight as she was able to use her speed and agility to their advantage. Strangely enough, Ce'rian couldn't help but be pleased.

Maybe...Maybe this wouldn't be as terrible as he feared. Just stay safe. He thought fiercely, leaning low, and doing his best to focus. It was early yet--they still had two hours to go.

You're doing great and feeling good! Though you wind up with a few small ashburns, and you're still feeling a little anxious, nothing has gone horribly wrong. When Thread gets close, you make your move and flame it away. When you're tapped to deliver firestone, you do so with no trouble. This isn't so bad... Not at all! You're feeling good, and that's what matters. You and your dragon surely are naturals, baby! Good job! You're certain the Weyrlingmaster's have noticed your natural skill.
